When ya gotta go...

Built-In Car Toilet: The Future of Comfort on The Road?

Screenshot-2026-04-20-163936-rr.jpg

Long road trips can be uncomfortable, especially when there’s no easy place to stop for a bathroom break. To solve this problem, Chinese engineers are developing a car toilet that can be built directly into electric vehicles.

Seres, a company focused on high-end electric cars and smart technology, has received a patent for an in-vehicle toilet system. This car toilet is designed to slide out from under a passenger seat, making it easy to use during long drives, camping trips, or when staying inside the vehicle for extended periods.

The system is designed for convenience. Drivers or passengers can activate the car toilet either by pressing a button or using voice commands. When not in use, it stays hidden under the seat, saving space and keeping the interior neat.

To manage odor, the toilet includes a ventilation system with a fan and exhaust pipe that pushes smells outside the vehicle. Waste is stored in a tank that needs to be emptied manually. There is also a heating element that helps evaporate liquid waste and dry solid waste, improving cleanliness and reducing odor.

You know who might not like this idea?

Welcome to the rock? Not now!

All tours to San Francisco's Alcatraz Island suddenly canceled

ratio3x2_960-rr.jpg

A day after San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island closed to visitors for a week of repairs at its ferry dock, National Park Service spokesperson Joshua Winchell provided more details regarding what led up to the shutdown — and why another closure is on the horizon.

The island was briefly closed on Jan. 14 so staff could inspect the pilings that secure the dock on the island. “Results from this inspection confirmed the need for repair,” he said in an email. “Additional improvements to the dock and pilings are anticipated later this year, which will necessitate another temporary closure of the island.”

Alcatraz City Cruises makes more than 3,200 ferry trips to the island annually, according to Winchell, transporting 1.5 million visitors per year.

There was a discussion on a daytime thread last week about new music. Several Hordelings were of the opinion that there is no new rock music being made. I disagree with that. There is plenty of new rock (and other genres, too), we just don't get exposed to new music the way we used to.

Here's an interesting article on the subject. It is from an Australian perspective, but its points apply globally, I would say.

Streaming platforms give us access to new music, so why are fewer people listening to it?

In 2017, music streaming platforms, led by Spotify, became the dominant form of recorded music distribution in Australia. The shift from a purchase-based (CDs, vinyl and downloads) to an access-based (streaming) economy represented a fundamental change in the music business.

Streaming platforms, with close to unlimited repertoire, enable and encourage passive listening via playlists and algorithmic recommendation. The result is that catalogue music has become the mainstay of the recorded music industry.

The algorithmic recommendations mentioned above are where users have the power / choice as to what to be fed. If you allow the algorithm to feed you tracks related or similar to those on your playlist, you have a better chance of hearing something new (or at least new to you).

What are your thoughts, fellow music lovers?

-----

Speaking of music. This is another interesting topic, I think.

Comparison of $4,000 boutique audio cable to $7 Amazon Basics cable shows audiophiles waste a lot of money — scientific audio equipment analysis with analyzer shows no difference in quality

Should you splash out on those upgraded audio cables to take your music listening pleasure up a notch? Probably not - affordable Amazon Basics RCA cables are more than good enough - confirms audio TechTuber Amir from Audio Science Review. This won’t be a surprise to regular readers. However, it is interesting to see Amir’s $7 vs $4,000 cable analysis using scientific audio equipment – as well as drawing from his personal music listening experience.

Check out the whole thing. Very thorough analysis and comparisons.

Couldn't agree with this more! The influencer culture is asshoe.

Salina is a small city, and I like city amenities without too many people and cars. Plus Salty and NotSoThoreau have been talking the state up for a while and urging me to visit.

Why not? I hate Da Swamp and the humidity-drenched regions around it. When I got to Pine Bluff, AR, on Friday evening, I was exhausted, damp, and wrung out. When I arrived at Fort Scott, KS, on Saturday, I was tired but not wasted. And the same on Sunday at Salina -- though that was the short leg of the trip.

Well, there was one cute girl who got off the elevator in my hotel this morning . . . but she was guarded by a Doberman.

Oh, you mean houses? Yes, one, a blue-and-white bungalow with a white picket fence (really!) and a two-car garage, plus a partially finished basement that almost doubles the usable space. The floors are hardwood or have been resurfaced with laminate, the garage has a door opener, and there is even a little windowed pantry space off the kitchen that I know the cats would love. Main bedroom and bath downstairs, two smaller bedrooms or offices upstairs. It faces east on a N-S street, too.

A little high on the price scale for me, but my realtor lady thinks I could offer $10K under and see what happens.

63 No surprise that audiophiles spend silly money on cables. I know guitar players that swear they can hear the difference depending on what end of a guitar cord they plug into the guitar verses the end they plug into the amp, as if its directional. I heard some theories why it could be the case, and some cord makers actually do mark each end as if they test them. Could be a troll move, who knows.

83 No surprise that audiophiles spend silly money on cables. I know guitar players that swear they can hear the difference depending on what end of a guitar cord they plug into the guitar verses the end they plug into the amp, as if its directional. I heard some theories why it could be the case, and some cord makers actually do mark each end as if they test them. Could be a troll move, who knows.
Posted by: Berserker

About the only way that would work is if there was a ground shield that only attached at one end. Then putting it on the amp end might help in a really electrically noisy environment?

Cuter than that. It's medium blue with white trim, it has a little astroturfed front yard with two garden patches trimmed with bricks, and while there are no porches, there is space out back to make a kind of patio.

The odd thing: The big refrigerator is in the dining room just outside the kitchen. There's an alcove for a fridge in the kitchen proper -- but this big thing just won't go through the archway. Realtor lady said I could have it moved to the garage, buy a new smaller one, and sell the old for more money than the new one.

90 There was a project on Hackaday where some guy made audio cables out of poly tubes filled with Mercury.

Apparently there was no real difference found with that either, though that might have been due to the fittings.

Nobody could tell the difference there, either.

Posted by: mikeski at April 21, 2026 10:21 PM (VHUov)

I get good cables for the guitar and amp speaker cabinets because they take a beating. The better cables are thicker, have better ends on them, and they last way longer compared to cheaper stuff. I don't do it for sound though. At home I'll use the cheap shit because they don't get hammered, but I have all good ones in the road cases for when it counts.

Twice. Once as a kid, once as an adult. First time they had a tour guide who actually told us interesting facts about the place and some of the more famous (or infamous, if you prefer) inmates and answered questions. Second time you could rent a headset.

One the first tour the guide told us a story about when they would let you "feel" how it was to be an inmate by letting people go into the cells and closing the cell doors. Then the mechanism had a failure and a group got stuck in the cells for a few hours. They don't do that any more.

I lived in San Francisco for several years and went to Alcatraz quite a few times. It's best to go around May when the flowers are in bloom and the baby seagulls have hatched. They’re adorable. The audioguide of the prison is a must. It's very well done and there are sound clips of former prisoners that are quite haunting. Plus, the ferry ride over offers exquisite views of the city. I highly recommend it!

He will only be allowed out of the cell for 30 minutes a day.
There will no talking, only passing letters allowed.

It does have a wide variety of temps, a full four seasons, wonderful fall, but July Aug can get to 119-120 deg, well in the southern parts, maybe not Salina. And it has plenty of humidity.

One important factor is you have a constant strong breeze with all of that. So the temp and humidity won’t seem anywhere as bad as some places. But there will be a few weeks of oppressive heat.

151 I will say one thing about KS climate wise for you to be aware of, understand it can get extremely hot in the summer.

Posted by: banana Dream at April 21, 2026

Which is why I want a house that will be easy to air-condition. And a "few weeks" of oppressive heat sounds like a dream after a climate with *ten months* of oppressive heat, and warm humid days possible in the other two.

The 82 F. today felt so dry by comparison to Da Swamp that it was more like 72. My hands were dry and not feeling dipped in glue. People have said it was one of those perfect days they get every year -- but then they don't know what I'm fleeing.

Man, I'm really getting in astro-space geek mode. I just watched, with some excitement, NASA's presser today on the new Nancy Grace Roman space telescope. Isaacman was there, and he was happy to tout it came under under budget and ahead of schedule. Let's hope he gets that ethic burned in some hides in NASA.

The thing is fully racked, stacked, and packed ready to be mounted on the launch rocket (Falcon 9 Heavy) to launch it to L2 sometime in Sept.

This thing is going to blow away all the previous ones, as impressive as they've been. It will survey and map in one year what would take 2000 years with Hubble, for instance. It will produce over 1TB of data every day, and will have amassed 20 PB of data after 5 years.

And it will discover tens of thousands of new exoplanets. As of now, there are about 6000 confirmed exoplanets. They expect this thing will raise that to 100,000 when it's done all it can.

201 Alcatraz is a must-do in SF. Views, history, place. Cold, always cold (to the extent there are still tourists in SF, do large numbers still show up in shorts and t-shirts, and instantly become customers to the sweatshirt guys who used to infest Union Square?).

Friend who's a world-class ocean swimmer used to have business trips up there, with one client they would *go for a swim in the Bay* instead of lunch. !!!! He also used to do the swim where they start (I think) from the Marina, swim out and around Alcatraz, and back. There's a current on the back (north) side that's like 2-3 knots or something, so it takes a while just to swim that portion.

He also won, or placed, in the swim where they drop the contestants out beyond the south pier of the Golden Gate - the finish line is the Bay Bridge. !!!!!! He laughingly described how the "newbies" would seek the warmer water - which was actually the outbound current. Vets knew to find the coldest water on the swim in - in-bound current. Tenders kept ships from killing these guys. This guy's not really human, something different with him.

The technology here with this thing is amazing. It has a fancy coronograph instrument that, bottom line, will allow *direct imaging* of exoplanets close enough.

You've probably seen the LASCO corona graphs and similar. They block out the light of the sun, allowing the corona to be imaged.

Well Nancy Grace will do that with the little points of starlight, and get images of even tinier little dust specks, which are the exoplanets, buzzing in the glare of those points of starlight.

In theory one could gerrymander out the minority party so they hold no majority vote in any district. Even 51% vs 49%.

The only reason why there is even one R district is because they could not find a D with enough intelligence to draw the boundaries. So the best the 51% could do was eliminate 80% of the 49% minority leaving them a net 10% of the population.

There are no moderate Dems officeholders. The party won't allow that anymore and the actual people that fall into that group like RFK or Tulsi are now Rs (sort of).

The exoplanet detection method will be gravitational microlensing. This is the tiny, *tiny* bending of light by the planet sized bodies it's looking for. That's just amazing of itself, and show the orders of magnitude this tech is progressing.

That will allow it to detect exomoons, provided they are far enough away from the parent planet. The mass limit there is about Ganymede mass, our own Moon would be a bit below the threshold. They're setting the expectations low, but they say they expect to confirm at least one exomoon orbiting a big Jupiter or bigger sized exoplanet.

Searching for things, different sessions of the same song by the same singer or group, will not come up in selection. I think they do it to avoid ASCAP or BMI fees. They also edit movies and other, such as the History channel, showings.

If they do it to those things they will do it to new music.

245 Farmer I think the degradation has occurred over a long period, and don't tie it to just particular administrations - and I didn't even mention that the system's most important player, Congress, has been a key enabler throughout, primarily through inaction. Law school education (another bow wave that probably will be slamming into what's left in the next decades), the Legal Cult (the passive or vociferously active belief/expectation that courts are actually in charge, their made-up laws and "doctrines" etc. trump the plain language of the constitution, etc.) Lots of wheels turning.

Too big a topic for a comments section. The ludicrous disenfranchisement in VA just brought the whole thing to mind.

Technically, as 18-1 wisely pointed out, the ridiculous VA districts create a risk of a Dem wipeout, given plausible political conditions on election day (that's DAY, bitches, talk to Alito if you don't follow). If you draw a map such that about 45% of the voters (all things being equal/typical) can only win 10% of the seats, by necessity you've created some weird and volatile districts.

250 Flu shot efficacy is I think pretty dicey in any case. And for most of the demographic of the military, a marginal consideration anyway.

I think both the UK and the Netherlands did studies of the enormous data collected over decades on flu shot benefits. IIRC impact on mortality was statistical noise. Don't think they looked at anything else but collecting "data" on things severity of an influenza-like illness is probably doomed to be squishy subjective and useless.

USAID-funded NGO employee: $272,000(!)
USAID advisor at the DOD: $195,000
USAID contractor: $200,000

There were 16,000 employees at USAID, and the New York Times was only able to interview one making less than $175k. Worldwide, there were an estimated 280,000 contractors.

ALL of these people were getting paid from our tax dollars. Many were making 2-4x the wage of the average American taxpayer ($65-70k per year).
