San Francisco bay as seen from Sausalito

Pink elephants after the parade.

Goose wearing beer goggles.

Nightmare.

Back off, bruv.

El Capitan in Yosemite. (NOT Yellowstone. Whoopsie.)

Some pig.

Friendly pig.

Goose-stepping chicken.

Re-post: Golden retriever wants to pack for the trip, too.

Two paws have twice the scratching power.

"The guilty dog test." It works every time.

Caught red-pawed.

Baby tiger tries to calm down his stressy mom.

We should bring back the "That's amore" joke.

49 Fairfax and the lefty demons who inhabit there will sink the NO by a mile; it won't even be close even with the huge rural and men turnout tonight .. when women go 80-20% yes and they are 54% of the voting age population ...

Posted by: VA is for Haters at April 21, 2026 07:53 PM (mFDo7)

50 Fairfax, who has 0 votes in, cast a little under 175K early votes...probably will end up with 350K votes total...if the votes break 80-20 (and why wouldn't it, when they can get 5 of the 11 congressional seats for themselves vs the other areas of VA)...that's a lead of 210K votes to be safe.

Fairfax doesn't always go that blue, but tends to when Trump is on the ballot...or here, when they can get almost all the power...

NYT opinion:

"It is not ageist to ask whether older people should be required to give more to younger Americans and national priorities - it is critical to the future of our democracy and society. America needs to confront gerontocracy before the system collapses under the weight of its inequality and injustice.

Older Americans deserve a say over the future even when they might not live to see it. But they do not deserve the stranglehold over it they currently enjoy through overrepresentation in elections, which produces too many regressive policies and too many seniors in the highest offices.

Older Americans are owed the care that everyone else funds. Indeed, they should get more of it than they get now - including funding for long-term care at home or in nursing homes. But they also need incentives to give up accumulated housing, jobs and wealth.

In little more than a century, the extension of life has transformed American and global politics. It turned older Americans, who had been one of the most underprivileged groups in the country, into some of the most overprivileged."

120 Evening, all,

Went to see three more houses today. One was okay, one was lower than meh as it had no garage (but space to build one at least). The third was a charmer. Unfortunately, as I was leaving to meet Salty for an early dinner (and he is, as I always suspected, a gentleman as well as a scholar), my car flashed a message at me: "Right low beam failure."

I had the left done a couple of years ago, and I know it's not as simple to change the HID bulb as it was to swap a bulb in 1970s-1990s cars. But my regular mechanic told me he had to take the bumper off to reach the headlight housing! YooToob videos make no mention of that, but admit various bits have to be removed or moved. I've had a tire and service place here in Salina recommended to me and will try them tomorrow. I don't want to drive at night or in rain with only one headlight!

The whole thing is against the VA Consitutition.

Normally, you can't make an amendment unless a vote has passed between - aka, you need 2 sitting legislatures both passing it. Ds passed the amendment after early voting started in the last state legislature, so that does not meet the "a vote passing" in between standard.

It was a great dinner -- excellent Italian food, and we had a great time talking.

The tire and service place I've had recommended opens at 7:30. If it's like tire places in Da Swamp, they don't take appointments and are first come-first served. The part won't be terribly cheap, but labor to do something like remove and replace a bumper is rough. On the other hand, the driver's side, which required that bumper removal, may be more crowded with gear like the fuse box than is the passenger side. We'll see.

If they kept the districts the same and turnout was the same from 2025, Ds would have been 9-2 after 2026. Now, they've spent a ton of money, used up a lot of political goodwill, will be putting up new candidates in the gerrymandered spots, and are hoping for 1 extra seat. Possibly one of the auto parts chains, like Autovalue, or O'Reilly's, or Pep Boys would be able to supply a bulb and change it for you. Wouldn't hurt to ask. If they cannot do it, go in and ask a gray-headed counter person if they can recommend an independent shop that will treat you fairly. NAPA, too.

Funding education off property tax is evil. Fund school buildings? Sure. Because nice school buildings (and grounds) can have other community uses, and a nice modern school building can be a magnet to draw new residents to the community, spreading out the tax burden a little. But teacher salaries, textbooks, and operating expenses should come from general revenue.

200 Leftists are running people in the Republican primary in my area for all local races. Very few people bother voting in primaries. But it’s a very Republican area so the R wins these things 65-35. The gop primary is the defacto general election.

And democrats figure they’ll never win as democrats so why not try to win as “Republicans”. This woman I know from Nextdoor is running for state rep. She is a rabid Trump hater and is always posting shit about lgbtq++++++ rights and how teachers are the mostest bestest people on the planet . But she’s running as a super duper conservative.

She just might win too. Nobody pays attention at the local level they vote on name recognition. She has bombarded the area with signs. Who is paying for it? Doubt it’s her. Soros money probably.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 21, 2026 09:09 PM (utfVc)

Lots of the schools up here do get funded by general revenue, because most of the village do not have a tax base worth shit. But, in the populous areas, like Anchorage, Fairbanks, MatSu, and the Kenai, they soak property owners for it. Sucks when you realize the schools are awful (except for some reason, in MatSu). We do not pay state income tax, and the only sales taxes are local to municipalities, which then pays for services. We do soak tourists for things like fishing and hunting licenses, bed taxes, and other premiums. But most of the income is from oil and gas development.

Don't get me started on the PFD.

257 120 Evening, all,

Trump should just give up now. There's no way to counter such a formidable force.

If anyone is interested, the peak of the April Lyrid shower occurs early this morning. The radiant is just rising here, and it will transit pretty high in the sky around 5AM or so local time. Best time to start looking is around 10PM local time or so.

I've never had much look seeing meteors when I'm actively looking for them, but your mileage may vary.

Toast 'em for ten minutes at 350 F. I did that with the knockoff woven wheat crackers, which seemed a little stale out of the box. Some cheese, mustard, and ham on them made for good snacks. Same for Triscuits -- except they cost $4 for a regular box, while the knockoffs were $2.50. None of the stores in Da Swamp has them any more, not even Aldi or Walmart.

Another loss would be ViceRoy/Rubio choosing to save himself, Cuba, and indeed the world rather than be the best President since Eisenhower -- one he could and should be. If there is anyone that has earned that much of a choice, it is him.

275 If you turn on your headlights at 186,000 miles per second what happens?
Posted by: r hennigantx

You see the light go in front of you at 186,000 miles per second. Your time and distance measurements are changed enough that light keeps its velocity. People who aren't traveling at that speed see something very different; the light appears stuck with you. If they watch long enough they see it slowly pull away from your vehicle.

Since the SPLC indictment dropped the focus has been on how corrupt they are. But think how the people they funded changed the public focus.

The called us Nazis and a threat to democracy. They ginned up a lot of anger and violence but it's pretty wild to see a DOJ heavyweight make that statement.

287 Heard a pundit say this afternoon that this redistricting is a waste of money and time as once this redistricting occurs the Virginia Supreme Court is going to throw it out. I looked at the map of VA tonight and almost all the yes counties are Northern Va,at DC Richmond and Norfolk. The rest of the state voted no.
