Much time was wasted trying to imitate birds - flapping wings - for human flight to ultimately succeed. The concept of an airfoil, lift and such was poorly understood.
Europe ultimately succeeded in surpassing the U.S.A. for quite a time in aviation during the early 20th century. One reason is the Wright brothers were very litigious and tried to sue everybody over patent infringements. They were really dickheads about it, actually. This is a wonderful painting and not just because of the naked babes. (Although that doesn't hurt.) It's the poses of the figures that make it so powerful. The crumpled wings to go with his broken body and the curious but not alarmed expressions of the nymphs are so telling, so emotional. The realism of the the details makes it feel like the viewer is in the scene. The realism of the wings is especially effective. There is nothing abstract about the wings. They were an honest effort to exceed what a man can do and are magnificent even in failure.
It's worth the time to look at Draper's many paintings if only for the way he glorifies the naked female body. Actually, they would serve as a teaching tool on technique, subject, color choices, and arranging. I hadn't heard of Draper before. Glad to learn about his work. The metajets will eventually be lithographically created in huge numbers over large surfaces, so larger objects can be propelled by light. Although current devices are only tens of microns in size, smaller than the width of human hair, the underlying physics suggests the approach could extend to much larger systems if sufficient optical power is available. Oh, I’m not disputing the Wright brothers genius nor their dogged determination. That isn’t the point.
They retarded the forward progress of American aviation for years due to their insistence they had a basic patent on flight. It’s interesting to see the progress from open air cockpits and biplanes, guys shooting revolvers at each other - to just a few decades later near supersonic flight and bombs and missiles. Progress! We can destroy cities and kill civilians with impunity. Posted by: Common Tater at April 24, 2026 10:25 AM (THAHD) 222

The Lament for Icarus, 1898
Herbert Draper Can understand how it won a gold mental at the 1900 Paris Exposition with the dramatic of the wings, 'lighting,' and young bodies, but it's too pretty for a tragic aftermath of the Greek myth. (The wings, for one, look intact.) His father, Daedalus, had fashioned wings from feathers and beeswax warning Icarus to escape Crete by flying in the middle path. Flying too low would soak the feathers in seawater, while flying too high would melt the wax with the sun's heat. Of course, Icarus ignored the warning, the beeswax melted, the feathers detached, and he drowned. Cause & effect: Hubris and a fatal fall. --- Would pass hanging today's art selection but it's still a good lesson. Thanks. == I think what happens in control breaks down and you have a lot of inertia. The people at the top can't quit because they know they are dead and are only fighting for time. The regular people would like it to end before they are invaded and half the woman in the Country get raped by the russians, but can't make it happen. The regular people have no leadership and no way to communicate, organize or coerce a peace settlement. So, unless someone in the military assumes the responsibility to negotiate a settlement it won't happen, and that someone has to have the juice to make it stick. Those people might all be dead, and even if they weren't they probably weren't going to make any settlement deals either. The world can adjust to the strait of hormuz being closed potentially forever. Alternatives exist or can be created although it will cost money and time. Since there is motivation to do it, it will get done. Posted by: Icky - not woods at April 24, 2026 10:55 AM (anL5R) 284
