  • The memory shortage could last for years. (The Verge)

16GB is the new 128GB, and you might as well get used to it:
Nikkei says that production would need to increase by 12 percent a year in 2026 and 2027 to meet demand. But according to Counterpoint Research, an increase of only 7.5 percent is planned.
That's bad enough - projected growth will only fall further behind demand. But it gets worse:
The new facilities will primarily focus on producing high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is used in AI data centers. With the companies already prioritizing HBM over general-purpose DRAM used in computers and phones, it's not clear how much these new fabs will help alleviate the price crunch facing consumer electronics.
But it gets worser: HBM memory is stacked vertically just like AMD's 3D-Vcache. And exactly like AMD's 3D-Vcache it uses TSVs - though-silicon vias - to transfer the signals between the layers.

And those TSVs take up about half the space on HBM chips, meaning the factories need to churn out twice as many wafers for the same amount of memory, when they already can't produce enough.

27 I am happy with my cheap new Sabrent external drive enclosure, a USB 3.0 2.5" SATA III HDD/SSD toolless enclosure with a USB-A jack (cable included) and a power switch.

I have a cheap old laptop, over ten years old now, where first the screen went out (after spilling a drink on it) and then eventually the external HDMI video out too. Windows 10 support recently expired too, as you know. Although it ended up in heavy use, it was a bottom-of-the-line "student" model to begin with, that I originally got for a utility purpose (supplemental to my work laptop), so it wasn't designed for easy user access to the innards.

Although I tried to be careful, I also didn't really care if I busted the brittle old plastic a bit getting at the hard drive; and I wouldn't even know how to reconnect the keyboard data cable, since I didn't see how I disconnected it pulling things apart. But I got it done.

The old HDD is now safely nestled in the enclosure and humming merrily along. And I'm transferring the data I care to keep onto a barely used terabyte USB hard drive that I got for the same project, since for all I know the old laptop drive itself could be about to crash too.

Progress. Relief.

28 Missed the ONT due to travel. Spent part of Sunday at Keukenof Gardens in Holland. Beautiful place and had the opportunity to share it with 48,098 other individuals. What the heck is it with Asians who need to pose with flowers, yes a set pose and then have someone take a picture of them. Good grief how annoying. Look at the tulips, don’t have a relationship with them.

How to recognize and tame your cognitive distortions (2022)

Cognitive distortions are internal mental filters or biases that increase our misery, fuel our anxiety, and make us feel bad about ourselves.

Our brains are continually processing lots of information. To deal with this, our brains seek shortcuts to cut down our mental burden.

Sometimes these shortcuts are helpful, yet in other circumstances — such as with these unhelpful cognitive filters — they can cause more harm than good.

NYCGMC is a world-class, world-renowned New York institution and a pioneering voice for the LGBTQ+ community.

Also a good place for picking up young, tight ass.

100 I'd like AI and CGI to turn out witty, funny movies without explosions, gunfire, spacecraft, superheroes, upper-middle-class angst or dinner-table arguments.

I'll add to that list.

Make scenes lighter so you aren't wondering if things are being shot with the lens cap on.

Adjust the audio levels so that conversations don't require subtitles and action scenes don't require earplugs.

Let white people be the protagonist.

Stop making white males the idiot with the long-suffering minority wife.

More to be added as I think of things.
