My 2008 Suburban is back in the land of the living. Turned out the belt and tensioner I ordered was for the A/C. Oh, well. Might as well replace it anyway, because it's behind the main belt. The bearing on the old tensioner is noisy, so changing it was prudent anyway. I was able to replace the destroyed main belt tensioner pulley with a spare from my road box; a used one with good bearing in it. And I happened to have a brand new belt that seems to be the right size on a hook in the shop. Regardless, I ordered a new main belt and idlers from the 'zon.

There's a big global restructuring of power going on.
Yahbut If Putin can hold on for another three years, the words "Fulda Gap" may regain meaning. Yes, Russia has lost a lot of manpower in the Ukraine war, but they've also built a wartime economy, and all the old, obsolete armaments have been used up, and, importantly, they've constructed a manufacturing and logistic base to support rebuilding bigger and better, and they're doing it. Right now, Poland seems to be the only country without its head up.its ass. Europe, or at least eastern Europe may be saved from the Islamists by being taken over by the Bear. Suicide comes from opening the rear door as you are traveling. Try to open the front door one has to push hard. Open the back door it's gone and maybe you to.

Not sure where the "suicide" part comes from.
Front doors hinged at the front, rear hinged at the rear. Posted by: Miklos If your doors open forwards, and you're halfway out of your parallel-parked car, and some yahoo drives by and hits your door, he just tears the door off and scares the shit out of you. If they open rearwards, you get crushed as the door swings back closed on you. Rear-opening doors also blow open if you accidentally pop the latch at 65 mph, rather than blowing closed. So, suicide doors. Easier to die when using them. Posted by: mikeski and/or Ralph Nader at April 18, 2026 01:17 AM (VHUov) 280

We called it: Carbon Day! Outdoor grilling, rain or shine. Small engine tune-ups and much noise. Car/truck tune-ups too, if friends wanted to do theirs... The vagaries of launch windows gets quite complicated. Something I heard them say during the Artemis II run-up, was the number of "cut outs" in the roughly 2hr launch window they had each day for 5 or 6 days per month. There were over 100 of these, a few seconds to a minute or two, compared to maybe 80 or so for Artemis I. That's due to the greatly increased number of stuff in orbit and the space junk in general. We hung out with the grands tonight so their parents could go out. Most of the time they are here, but were not going to return til late. We are brain damaged but thankful to see them often.
Our 7yr old grandson is probably going to tell my mother in 6wks that she's probably going to die soon (my husband told him her age: 95yrs). He was trying to let him know she's not walking as well due to her age. 5 yr old insane girl has been conversing like an adult since 18mo old. She embellishes stores vs flat out lying, so we never know. Knows her princesses & who Rapunzel was & her story as I rebraided her hair (she's gorgeous). We discussed a prince looking for his bride as I read The Princess and the Pea. She wonders if she has to kiss on the mouth & at first I said by then (after college) she may want to. She said no & I said that's ok. Told her I might not be around for this but watching from heaven & she almost cried so I had to change this course of the timeline, &told her that her parents would help her find the correct prince. Can you tell I never had another girl in my life til her? 7mo baby girl is perfection and easy. I realize this is boring. Don't care. G'nite. I had a great "The customer states" episode today. A bike gets towed in. Owner says he changed the battery, but it don't start. Starts ranting that he had a new starter done at some shop and it must be a pos. I hit the ignition, push the start button. I get 1 click. Ok, solenoid is fine, starter isn't turning. I pull the seat, look at the battery, find the starter cable unhooked and crushed behind the battery. Not only did he never connect it, but instead of being in front of the battery where it belongs he just crushed it under and behind the battery. The bike was sitting for 2 years he says. I look in the oil tank and its full. I said yeah I saw this movie before, bike sits, oil slowly drains into the engine, owner checks oil and says gee its low on oil, and fills the tank. now when you go to start it and the engine starts pumping a few quarts of oil back to the tank where there's no room, and the dip stick goes sub orbital. I start the bike and the oil starts to rise. Fucking knew it. I pumped 2 quarts out before the level settled.

This is interesting. The Space Force, through what they call the Range Command, is the ultimate authority, the big Kahuna, on launches. Nothing launches unless they give the okay. And flight termination, aka self-destruct, falls entirely on them. They set that up so they are independent, using their own telemetry and tracking systems, independent of NASA. Suppose a manned flight went out of control, and they lost all communication and didn't know if the launch escape worked. It would be the Space Force range command officer would make the call to self-destruct. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 18, 2026 02:18 AM (w6EFb) 352

>> Massive Cosmic Test Shows Newton And Einstein Still Explain Gravity Accurately
I'll be interested in how this further constrains things. General Relativity remains the greatest, most successful physical theory yet. And it remains classical, deterministic, and continuous, refusing any attempts at quantization. And yet it is the most accurate theory to date. They set things up with various parameters that constrain how much the real gravity can deviate from GR predictions, and those constraints get smaller and smaller. The will tighten it even more. For example, back in the 2000s, lunar laser ranging showed that the position of the Moon's center of mass was within 2 cm of where Einstein gravity said it should be. They have no whittled that down to a mm or so. The earth-moon system is within a mm of where Mr. Einstein said it should be. While it doesn't seem like much, Mr. Newton alone would off by. GR adds periodic terms with amplitudes of 6m to that position vs time. Very tiny amount, but now about 3 orders of magnitude greater than the state of the art precision. It's crude. Vulgar. No *decent* man would utter something like that in the presence of his wife/gf. It's trashy frat-boy talk. Meh. Every relationship has it's own vibes. Yes, it's crude and vulgar. Crude and vulgar can be funny, depends on the people involved. I have friends whom I wouldn't dream of saying something like that to, and other friends to whom I'd say something worse. Notice her response was to imply that that encounter with me was the reason old friend now cosplays as a boy. We've got a quarter century together, what went before that is immaterial. She did what she did, I did what I did, but it made us into the two people who mesh so well. I asked her before I posted it, and she said "Why not, it's funny." That's tidal locking. I could try to ramble on for a few paragraphs trying to condense this down, but the best thing is to look it up and see the diagrams. Any small body orbiting close enough to a larger body will tend to do that and quickly. The tidal gradient (variation in gravity across the extend of the body) produces a torque to slow down. The mechanism is still going on, slowing down the earth's rotation and throwing the Moon into a higher orbit at about 1.5" per year. >> Mars' moons are tidally locked, are they not?
Yes indeed. But with Phobos, there's a twist. Rather than slowing down Mars and spiraling out, Phobos is trying to speed Mars rotation up, and thus spiraling *in*. The reason is Phobos is so close to Mars, the orbital period is less than the rotation period. Phobos rises in the West and sets in the east. The tidal interaction there causes an inspiral. Deimos is just outside that, and so it is on the out-spiral side. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 18, 2026 02:52 AM (w6EFb) 389

These tidal interactions and the torques and spin-orbit interaction they cause get quite complex. Take Mercury. Early on, everyone just assumed it would be tidally locked to the Sun. They couldn't see it well enough to note enough surface features to time the rotation. In 1965, they managed to measure it using Arecibo as a big interplanetary radar. Turned out it was rotating faster. It's in a 3:2 tidal "lock", but some prefer resonance, reserving "lock" for 1:1. Eccentricity adds a twist. Mercury is eccentric enough that the 3:2 state becomes a local minimum in the total energy, and it fell into that rather than 1:1. I said you need tires, these are old enough to vote. He asks why? I said because the are old, and got more cracks in them than pelosi's face, they are really bad. He says but they got a lot of tread on them. I said it don't matter, they are cracked in the sidewalls and in between the treads. The tubes are ancient, you're not going to make it out of the state, you don't want to risk it. They are hard as a rock, you won't have any grip, and they could come apart at highway speed. Oh but it was my friend's and I wanted to leave it as is in his memory. I said ok, we'll just park it on YOUR casket in your memory when you die with these fucking tires, and you can join him. He finally relented.
