prostitutes provide an in demand service for pay and they should not be lumped in with politicians. Actors provide entertainment, but in todays world the few that achieve celebrity status think they should be 'thought leaders'. Politics seems to be full of vile grifters, and DC seems to twist many of the ones with good intentions into grifters all too quickly.
Maybe we should have a draft for congressional service. If your number is called you have to spend two years in DC. I doubt draftees could do any worse than what we have now. Posted by: PaleRider at April 23, 2026 11:12 AM (CFj4+) 12

One thing Trump could do that would be helpful to the US would be to encourage agriculture in Hawaii.
Hawaii is not a diverse economy. Government spending is the number one component. (Not sustainable). It is also hugely reliant on tourism, which is understandable, but not a sector that is useful for building a stable culture as it tends to create the third world dynamic of massive amounts of lower class, a few upper class and no middle. It's agriculture basically died when the tariffs on sugar and pineapple disappeared in the 1970s-1980s. The packing plants associated also disappeared, removing opportunity for many middle class. There are vast open fields in Hawaii (yes, seriously) that have basically gone fallow since. Trump could make revitalizing agriculture in Hawaii, leading to supporting industries for export one of his side projects. This could move the less stupid citizens there to see MAGA as beneficial to them as well. (Not suggesting it has to be a return sugar or pineapples, but it's a tropical island, and many places are already growing chocolate and coffee.) In First World countries, farming is highly mechanized.
True, but nonetheless, it requires lots of labor. If HI returns to its agricultural roots, they would still need a lot of workers, just as we do here in the mainland. There are approximately 2.5 to 3 million agricultural workers in the U.S., with roughly 15% identifying as migratory and 85% as settled. Immigrant workers make up a significant portion of this workforce, with studies indicating that about 40–50% of crop farmworkers are unauthorized, while many others hold H-2A seasonal visas Posted by: Archimedes at April 23, 2026 11:22 AM (Riz8t) 41

it's not a great bill.
1. Supply chain distortion and innovation loss. Processors will make sourcing decisions based on tax optimization rather than quality, price, or product fit. A California wine producer who uses specific French yeast cultures or a Wisconsin cheese maker who imports specialty rennet will face a tax penalty for doing what makes their product distinctive. Over time, you lose product diversity and innovation in exchange for a simpler, more "domestic" supply chain. 2. Entrenchment and repeal difficulty. Once $10 billion in annual credits is flowing to a constituency, it never goes away. Every food processor with a domestic-sourcing strategy will lobby to defend this credit. Even if a future administration wants to repeal it for fiscal reasons, the coalition to keep it will be formidable. That's a permanent ratchet in the tax code, funded by every American taxpayer, benefiting a concentrated industry. 3. The regulatory arbitrage game. "Further processing" is the threshold for eligibility — products must be "sold for human consumption without further processing." That definition will be litigated endlessly. Is a bagged salad "further processed"? A frozen pizza? Posted by: Jeff Carter at April 23, 2026 11:24 AM (ZiwLX) 43
The honest summary
On paper, this looks like an $7-15B/year tax credit to promote American agriculture. In practice, it's: A concentrated subsidy to large food processors (not farmers) Funded by all taxpayers through lost revenue Paid for again by consumers through higher grocery prices With significant trade, administrative, and distortionary costs on top The combined direct and opportunity cost package is likely in the range of $15-25 billion per year once you add revenue loss, consumer price effects, trade retaliation, and compliance costs. Over 10 years that's $150-250 billion — real money for a bill that's gotten almost no attention because it was introduced in February and has been sitting in Ways and Means ever since. Who benefits: Large food processors and cooperatives with the scale to hit the $100M cap, plus the domestic commodity producers whose prices get supported. Who pays: Federal taxpayers, grocery shoppers (especially low-income households), U.S. agricultural exporters facing retaliation, and anyone who values product diversity and trade relationships. First world agriculture would be using large equipment and higher salaries for the higher skilled workers required to use them.
No subsidy required. But if its highly mechanized, there won't be many jobs created. If no subsidy is required, why are you invoking Trump? Why does the government need to be involved at all? Why wouldn't private industry invest in it? 66 Investing in a product or company because you have faith in their capacity to succeed is not the same as picking winners and losers and submarining the industry thru regulation for your benefit. That's criminal. Correct. See above. There are far to many who say "could we?" and not enough who say "should we?". That is why our government is now Leviathan. HI's main crops were pineapple and sugar. Hawaii's main crops historically included sugar and pineapple, which once dominated the islands' economy. Today,, diversified agriculture thrives with key crops like taro (kalo), coffee, macadamia nuts, papaya, bananas, and seed crops. Traditional staple crops brought by Polynesians (canoe crops) included taro, sweet potato, breadfruit, and yams. I really think the nation could struggle along without either one. As to sugar, it has been highly subsidized for a century, but was initially subsidized in 1789. That's long enough. The U.S. first implemented direct federal subsidies for sugar with the Sugar Act of 1934 (Jones-Costigan Act) during the Great Depression. 1789: Congress passed the first sugar tariffs to protect the industry, a form of indirect support that persisted for centuries. Protection laws tend not to work well for anyone, this would drive food prices up even more, and honestly Big Ag hardly needs more regulation and government funding.

I read an interesting argument for ethanol in gasoline recently. The argument is that it helps to keep the grain producers in business, so that if we ever have a regional crop failure in grains, we will have the excess capacity spread about to make up the difference in our use of grain in food production.

At a NoVa MoMe a few years ago, my wife and I were talking to some guy from Hawaii (I forget his name, but he said that he mostly comments on the Gun Thread), and he was bemoaning the decline of agriculture in Hawaii. He said that the abandonment of sugar cultivation led to the Maui wildfires, because the sugar planters would have controlled burns after each harvest to clear the cane fields. Once they went away and stopped doing that, you had all of this tinder build up, and then boom! when a spark hit it.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 23, 2026 11:58 AM (0Easg) Yes and no. Agriculture in total is not a national interest. Agriculture in specific is. We don't need to subsidize crap or crap food. We need to subsidize that which would keep America healthy and fed. That's the national interest. Kudos to the New York Post for being the only major outlet to get this right. The SPLC were paying the leaders. By definition, leaders cannot be informants. They run the operation.
