Top Story

China's leading flash memory producer, YTMC, is constructing two new factories in addition to the one already in progress. (Tom's Hardware)

Each factory will produce 100,000 wafers per month - equal to 50% of the company's current production - once it reaches full capacity, but that will take a while. The first of the new facilities will come online this year but will take another year to reach 50% of planned capacity.

In an interesting twist, half the capacity of the first of these factories will be assigned to DRAM rather than NAND, which is what YTMC normally produces.

It won't be enough to fill the current shortage but every bit helps.

The only shortcoming is that the Pi Pico just controls the, well, the controls. It's powered by a full Raspberry Pi - model 4 or 5 - which costs as much as the PocketTerm itself.
Meanwhile the Pilet, another Pi-powered handheld, is switching to using the Pi Compute Module rather than the regular Pi. (Liliputing)

The Compute Model is designed to be integrated into devices like this. There's just one problem: Lots of people already have the Pi, and hardly anyone has the Compute Module, because it gets integrating into devices.

26 Why do they use the passive construction, Se habla espanol ("Spanish is spoken [here]"), instead of the active Hablamos espanol ("We speak Spanish [here]")? Probably because the first merchant to do so chose that, and now it's a tradition. But why did he choose that?

Wolfus I think the difference between "Spanish is spoken" and "We speak Spanish" is purely idiomatic. The first form is generally for written postings the second form for speech. Both are correct. I am sure there are regional differences too of which I am unaware.

Some people say "ninos" for children. Some people say "cabritos" which means kids (little goats.) Do not call a Spaniard's child cabrito.

Glad to hear it. Also glad that you're not offended when I use the term "livestock." My mother (who grew up on a farm in FL) used to call the cats that, and I still do. But I had a neighbor in an apartment complex in CO, and when I referred pleasantly to her golden Lab as "your livestock," she was somewhat offended until I explained.

Probably so. Spanish still has the formal "usted" and familiar "tu" constructions for "you," as English used to have "you" and "thou." So there are no doubt many fine idiomatic distinctions that I never picked up in all my Spanish classes.

Some think that "thou" and "thee" are more formal forms of English. The reverse is true. "Thou" was the intimate, the familiar, that one would use in talking to close family or friends, or to God (you can't get more intimate than that, I'd guess). When Hemingway has Robert Jordan and Maria first become lovers, he transcribes their "you" into "thou," which tells us a lot about their relationship.

My first Spanish teacher was from Spain. We were told to use "usted" with people we weren't familiar with. I still find myself doing that. And to ask "¿Puedo tuterlo?" (Can I speak to you informally?

I'm doing the quarterly thing too, Hadrian. At the moment I choose not to have SS do withholding on me, since you can't pick an amount but have to settle for their percentages -- which begin at 7%.

After I have my house and have settled all my finances, I may rethink that.

Yes, I do the nap thing too -- only 1.5 to 2 hours, so I won't be unable to sleep at night. Six hours or so overnight and close to two in the daytime, and I'm fine.

During my road trip this weekend, no doubt I won't have much chance for a nap. Maybe if I get to the hotel right at check-in time, I can crash for an hour before dinner.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that. I love to watch it, but I would be very, very leery of using them.

I did it yesterday and did it certified mail because it's not when you mail it, it's when the USPS postmarks it. So it's not whether you dropped it off on time, if they toss it in a pile and don't get to it until tomorrow, it's your fault.
