Evening and morning, fellow sojourners. Is it really Woden's Day again? Hmf. Ha. So it is.
Linda is slowly coming to accept that I am traveling to Kansas starting Friday. She's not happy, and her reaction to any house I show her on Realtor is a limp "That's nice," but I didn't expect much more. Oh, well. Today I need to air up the spare tire in the Buick -- it needs 60 psi instead of 33-35 like the other four -- and begin some pre-packing. So, whatz you up to? Why do they use the passive construction, Se habla espanol ("Spanish is spoken [here]"), instead of the active Hablamos espanol ("We speak Spanish [here]")? Probably because the first merchant to do so chose that, and now it's a tradition. But why did he choose that?
Funny thing to wonder about at 4:45 am, but Pixy's No hablo . . ., which is active, made me think of it. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 15, 2026 05:48 AM (wzUl9) 27

Wolfus I think the difference between "Spanish is spoken" and "We speak Spanish" is purely idiomatic. The first form is generally for written postings the second form for speech. Both are correct. Some people say "ninos" for children. Some people say "cabritos" which means kids (little goats.) Do not call a Spaniard's child cabrito. Posted by: San Franpsycho at April 15, 2026 *** Probably so. Spanish still has the formal "usted" and familiar "tu" constructions for "you," as English used to have "you" and "thou." So there are no doubt many fine idiomatic distinctions that I never picked up in all my Spanish classes. Some think that "thou" and "thee" are more formal forms of English. The reverse is true. "Thou" was the intimate, the familiar, that one would use in talking to close family or friends, or to God (you can't get more intimate than that, I'd guess). When Hemingway has Robert Jordan and Maria first become lovers, he transcribes their "you" into "thou," which tells us a lot about their relationship. >>This makes them worse value in almost every respect than Apple.
Even if they were half the price, they would still be a worse value than Apple. And with the Neo, Apple is going to eat every surface and Chromebook for lunch. Posted by: Thomas Bender at April 15, 2026 07:24 AM (XV/Pl) 99
Biden sees some black guy and says he looks like Obama. From the picture it looks to me like the guy did have a couple of the same attributes.

Taxes in the hands of my accountant. This was a complicated year. My late wife normally had an exceptional filing system.
Took a major effort to organize this year. Learned some hard lessons, with the loss of thousands of dollars of charitable deductions receipts. Life moves on. I wish my efforts were not rewarded with massive fraud. Posted by: NaCly Dog at April 15, 2026 07:26 AM (u82oZ) 102
Hey! Those mainstream African-Americans who are articulate and bright and clean and nice-looking all look the same to me.

My idea for reforming SNAP/EBT is just eggs, milk, bread, rice, and beans.
No junk food. No meat. You want meat? Work for it. Posted by: no one of any consequence at April 15, 2026 07:28 AM (qFwJc) 104
"Apparently she fudged by saying she received therapy which she never had.
Posted by: FenelonSpoke" She and her cohorts are corrupt and stupid and she is still the County Election Supervisor. Posted by: fd at April 15, 2026 07:29 AM (vFG9F) 105
Just looked outside and realized it's raining so I won't be riding the scooter. I guess I'll have to drive to the airport with a cup of coffee and maybe stop by the donut shop. Damn the bad luck.

The local grocery's remainder shelf had a loaf of Texas toast for sale, so that's what I am having with my cup of tea. It reminds me that I should bake a loaf today.

There is a book "Pillars of the Earth," by Ken Follet. In it a young Prior gets elected Abbot. A lot of the monks are lazy. So he institutes a policy of "if you want meat and wine, you must work for it."
I like that. Posted by: no one of any consequence at April 15, 2026 07:31 AM (qFwJc) 109
I bet J.J will have this is the MR, but I wanted to post it because the headline from the "NY Post" made me laugh:

Saying a prayer for Fenson's success. Lunch for the new hires sounds like a generous act on the part of the company

Speaking of tea and toast, when I was a child I wondered why that was all Grandmother Poppins wanted for her breakfast. Now that I'm old, I realize I don't have the appetite for a big breakfast with all the trimmings myself.
It's a variant of the old Mark Twain comment (paraphrased): "When I was seventeen, I thought my father was one of the stupidest men alive. When I turned twenty-one, it was amazing how much the old man had learned in four years."
