The Most Neurotic Generation In History, Gen Z, Now Won't Leave Home Without Their "Anxiety Bags," Bags Filled with Self-Soothing Gizmos

"Experts call it genius," the NY Post claims.

Hannah Fowles was spiraling.

It had been a grueling day at work, and by the time the 22-year-old from Provo, Utah, got home, panic was bubbling in her chest as her thoughts raced and her cheeks flushed red.

"I was starting to get super overheated and I couldn't calm myself down," Fowles told The Post. "Nothing that I normally do, like breathing exercises or lying down in a dark room, was working."

Then she saw the bag.

Just weeks earlier, Fowles and her therapist had put together a small, grab-and-go kit filled with items to help calm her mind when anxiety strikes -- an idea she'd first come across while scrolling on TikTok.

She now reached for it, swallowing her anxiety medication and pressing a cold pack to the back of her neck. She flicked on a small portable fan, letting the cool air wash over her face, while in her other hand, she gripped a spiky fidget toy, feeling its prongs dig into her palm as the panic began to ebb.

"Within 10 minutes, I was able to calm down and go to sleep. It normally doesn't happen that quickly," Fowles said. "I never would have thought to have these things until I made the bag. It's been a game-changer -- I use it all the time."

Others her age are finding relief in the same way.

Call them anxiety bags, panic pouches, calm-down kits -- whatever the name, these DIY creations are rapidly gaining popularity online, especially among Gen Z women.

Oh young women are adopting this viral trend? I didn't see that coming.

It's easy to see why. In a survey of nearly 1,000 Americans aged 18 to 26, 61% reported having a diagnosed anxiety condition, and 43% said they experience a panic attack at least once a month.

And while many turn to talk therapy and medication to cope, those tools don't always work in the heat of the moment.

"Stuff like mindfulness and body scans are great, but you have to remember to do them," said Dr. Kyra Bobinet, a physician and behavioral neuroscientist. "When you're in an environment like ours, this storm of hyper-stimulating triggers, you won't necessarily have the ability to remember to do those things anymore."

That's where anxiety bags come in. Keeping self-regulation tools within reach during moments of high stress and sensory overload is, in Bobinet's words, "genius."

"It's a way of distracting and soothing," she explained. "It creates other sensations to focus on so that you don't feel completely taken over by the rapid firing of your anxious or depressed mind."

The "body scan" thing that's mentioned works for reducing stress and falling asleep. There's a "guided meditation" here. The basic gist is that you focus on one part of your body at a time (I just do parts of my head) and imagine the nerves and muscles switching off and going slack. I think it's the same principle as counting sheep -- it's not what you're thinking, it's all the stuff you're not thinking about by focusing on this boring, repetitive, non-stressful thing. By making your brain focus on this one boring thing, you keep your brain from buzzing or catastrophizing.

I only tried it because someone said they tell special ops guys to do this. They have limited time to sleep in, and are usually very keyed-up, and this protocol helps them fall asleep in the few hours they're allowed to sleep.* That sounded bad-ass and Not Gay to me, so I tried it, and it does work.

I don't bother to do this any more. Now I just put on episodes of Always Sunny I've seen 50 times before. Same idea again: Your brain is trained on this boring thing (every show is boring after 50 watches) and that's just enough to keep you from thinking about more exciting things.

* I also knew a spec op medic who said he's very loose with ketamine and other tranquilizers to make sure people can sleep even after coming off 10 hours of combat. So I guess there's that, too.

Also worth noting that my sister's last job was at a pharmacy, which...is slightly alarming.

And I suspect it may be as widespread as most "trends" announced by the news, which is wrong and/or dishonest about virtually everything else. I could not deal with these nervous people without slapping them. Think Scarlett slapping Prissy in Gone With the Wind...when Prissy suddenly did not know about birthin' babies. Melanie is in labor and Atlanta is burning down. I feel sure the pressure would build and I would smack someone.

My presence alone would give them anxiety on top of their other anxiety.

125 Every generation of human since Cain brained his brother for not sharing breakfast has had to deal with social anxiety.

These people aren't unique in that regard. They're unique because they literally have nothing to live for. You used to have to live to survive. Either you had your shit together on purpose and life was good, or you didn't and you had to scramble and hustle just to keep from starving or getting killed somehow.

These people have the luxury of not having to fight for survival, but without having had any exposure even to the concept of fighting for survival. There's no work ethic. There's no hustle. There's no reason they should. They're basically pets.

Embracing neurosis gives them the internal struggle they need to give their existence some kind of pathetic meaning.

Surprisingly, JG considers himself a Joo.

ake Gyllenhaal is of mixed Ashkenazi Jewish (mother) and Swedish, English, and German (father) descent. Born to a Jewish mother and a father with Swedish noble roots, Gyllenhaal has stated he considers himself Jewish. He was raised with a blend of faiths but identifies with his mother's Jewish heritage

192 I need an anti anxiety bag. Mom fell and broke her hip last night. Went into surgery this morning. Now back in her room. Been spending the waiting time dealing with ensuring rehab at the correct places post surgery release. She had vascular dementia and poor if any short term memory and the anesthetic is likely to make it worse. So we will see where the caseworker sends her of the faculties I listed and called to ensure vacancies.

In between, I had to fix a printer driver problem for a 2018 Color Laser printer on our network. The driver did not like the change from cable modem and router ISP to new cheaper fiber optic ISP provider gateway. Had to reinstall the printer using old bash script and archaic driver along with the latest version of CUPS. Got it working.

To me, the biggest barrier to Linux acceptance are the driver situation as mfgs simply do not update their drivers and they can break on linux with new patches and upgrades.

Getting to be an issue for Windows too. I have an All in One Canon in the basement which will be Windows 10 4ever after I managed to find a windows driver from Canon India support page for Win 8.1. Original driver was XP SP3 vintage.

Going to speak up for the Millennials, just a bit, as a tail-end Boomer. Ten Millennial nieces & nephews, nine married, no bastards, no divorces. No Jacobins, no Thanksgiving hectoring. So much depends on their parents - who are mostly late Boomer/early Gen X.

How much does this crap cost in the litle bag? Is there a douche bag as well? Seems like there should be a Summer's Eve in there. Or a Fleet's Enema. Either/or/both while having a minty life saver. That would distract them.

I don't know what I'd do if I had a daughter like this. Probably give her xanax that I would be popping in depression that I birthed a dimwit.

My oldest grandgirl is 5yrs old and would scare them (she scares us at times). My husband saw her knocked down flat playing by a larger boy and she got up unfazed and continued on with her life. Just get out of her way. Unstoppable is our girl.

But I hate she is on anxiety meds, it cannot be good for developing brains.

Meanwhile, my children are all pains in the tails, but not on meds and making it in life - even the autistic one. Perhaps being the no rules mama, as J calls me, is working out in the end. Experience is a heck of a teacher!

Got her to the right one about 2 am my time and surgery started about 11 am after a flurry of calls granting permission over the phone. 251 That girl holding the bag has the same expression of a brief college roommate of mine who ran away without paying rent/utilties after 2mo living with me.

I'd put up one of those tear the phone number deals for a roommate and she showed up. Initially seemed fairly normal. A respiratory therapist student. Having an affair with a married medical resident of the university med school (I found this out later). Shy. Never came out of her room to meet my friends, and I had a lot. Male friends coming over to have a beer and discuss their girlfriends. Parties. I couldn't figure her out.

Two male friends plus my bf/husband told me they thought she was very weird. Yep. Jealous and complained about "all of my friends." Ok. Once came to the kitchen at 0530 and screamed at me for ironing my nursing school uniform. I ignored her but should have ironed her face.

I came home from work one night to see that she'd stolen my coffee table (?) and some of my clothes. One a denim shirt my mother embroidered, which was a bummer.

I debated small claims court for the missed rent/utilities/theft but my gang said, nah, she's nuts. In other words, be glad she did not slit your throat in your sleep.

my cat destroyed my color laser and I replaced with a less snazzy brother b/w laser and he's working hard at killing that too.

just easier to send stuff out to print and pick it up and get it delivered by staples or wherever

printers have been a nightmare my entire working career

There used to be brands better than others but pretty much all printer driver software (really most hardware driver software) has been made into trash or neglected until the latest OS update breaks the drivers.

PITA it is. Scanners can be even worse which is why I have some vintage computers that are more or less offline from Windows XP SP3 to Win 7 for certain hardware/software. Refuse to keep buying and paying new prices for hardware/software to get the same functionality as working old tech.

Came in from actual productive activities and was reviewing the earlier posts, and on one someone mentioned competitors in the earlier days of McDonalds. 270 Reddit is FULL of posts about these, and they're all gold lol.

I’ve made an emergency bag to have at work for when I have meltdowns. So, 99% of my meltdowns (emotional dysregulation crisis) happen at work. (Long whine about mental issues, all the crap in the bag) Still missing: a cheap bruxism plaque because I bite my teeth hard from stress, and a note telling others how they can assist: don't keep too many people around, ask before you touch me, keep me where I am, I'll be fine, etc. Any other ideas?

I keep something for grounding each of my senses. Taste (candy, mints, gum), smell (tin of scented wax), etc. I also keep a protein bar and juice box for afterwards because that's when I go into shutdown and need help recovering energy. I also keep a mini notebook and pen so I can write everything out to help me process. And an instant ice pack to engage the mammalian dive reflex.

I keep a kit in my house, car, and office. I have multiple, so one's always accessible.

I wish I could do that at my job! I work in overnights in healthcare , so when someone presses their call button i can't have noise-cancelling headphones on or anything like that.

Maybe something similar is going on with anxiety. We don't have barbarian hordes galloping in from over the horizon to loot, rape, and burn. We don't have leopards puncturing Cousin Bob's skull and dragging his corpse up a tree for later consumption.

We're tuned to be on guard against threats, and the fact that we can't SEE a threat doesn't help. In fact, it makes it worse.

Increasingly MSFT is making their software junk too. I keep ONE computer with their combination spyware/OS/Office completely updated. I don't used it as a daily driver due to the chance that MSFT OS update borks the system so I am always about one week behind on installing any updates. Don't turn it on to update it if the current Win 11 update is borked and wait until the update is patched.

I think, however, it is rooted in the fact that we are not made to concentrate on one thing over all others for extended periods.

We cast a pretty wide sensory net, as animals, and modern life is awash with things that essentially put perception into blinders. It fucks with our brains, which need a lot more static.

Major issue with Linux is old hardware works but sometimes gets borked when you transition things like routers--my home network is pretty sophisticated because I have wired the whole house with cat 8 cable with drops, use the 2.4 for wireless security and camera systems, and the 5 ghz for phones and laptop.

319 You can thank the panic pushing on socials.

I have a DEI Gen z boss and it's like having a nervous group of puppies around you all the time. She is extremely hyperactive. Oh and she doesn't know anything about our job.

She says a lot of stupid babbly bullshit like I just feel like etc. It's nauseating

322 To me, the biggest barrier to Linux acceptance are the driver situation as mfgs simply do not update their drivers and they can break on linux with new patches and upgrades.

Getting to be an issue for Windows too. I have an All in One Canon in the basement which will be Windows 10 4ever after I managed to find a windows driver from Canon India support page for Win 8.1. Original driver was XP SP3 vintage.

Printers are a PITA, generally. Paper handling is a bitch. What I would like to see: some company should bring out a cheap clone of the old HP Paintjet tractor-feed printer, with cartridges made to be user-refilled. And along with that, a service called PrintDash; you e-mail them your copy, and they set it up and print X numbers of copies to your specifications, and courier them to you. If it's something confidential, they will send an Uber to pick you up, along with your copy on a thumb drive, and take you to their shop, so you can print it yourself on an off-line printer. For a price.

324 Unless you're a hardcore coder that needs it for your job, or if you're a nerdcore hobbyist and run a home lab for whatever (NTTAWWT), Linux is just not worth it on a thousand different levels as a day-to-day home OS.

Could not disagree more. Using it right now. The printer driver I needed was native to the build. I rarely have to get under the hood of the thing.

Well, they are Liberals. It's baked into the cake. Now there are allegations coming out that Justin Trudeau was viewing kiddie pr0n on his devices.

328 "43% said they experience a panic attack at least once a month."

Bullshit. I've had panic attacks. Three. In my entire life.
They're debilitating. No way are that many people having them.

They may THINK it's a panic attack, but it isn't.

330 We need to draft all AWFL's into a woman's boot camp where they get their heads shaved, 6 weeks of physical training, Stripes or Spies Like Us every night. No Time for Sergeants on Saturday. On Sunday, The Best Years of Our Lives.
Then, we send them home, tell them chicks aren't required to serve, just wanted them to know what men do to preserve our civilization.
Could cure a few Karens. And we get 6 quiet weeks.
