Monday Overnight Open Thread - April 13, 2026 [scampydog]

Drake Observatory.jpg

Drake Observatory. Link goes to Wikipedia.

The main dome of the observatory houses an 8.25 inch refracting telescope, on a German equatorial mount. The ashes of the astronomer Daniel Walter Morehouse, and those of his wife Myrtle, are interred within the wall of the observatory rotunda.

Observatory sits in the middle of Waveland Golf Course, Des Moines, IA. Got a few good pictures of it over the weekend (and one golf ball a bit closer than I'd have liked).

Happy Monday. Hope you all tried to behave over the weekend. Misanthropic Humanitarian took the evening off, and I've been thawed out from my cryogenic ONT retirement freeze. Please adjust your expectations accordingly.

Not about Pope Leo and his stance on immigration, climate change, etc. It's about a guy and a cool craft.

Butter-sculptor-1.jpg

Photo credit: Dianne Towalski, The Central Minnesota Catholic

In the world of art and talent, some choose butter.

“I get some pretty random commission requests, but when the National Catholic Educational Association contacted me about doing a live butter sculpture during their conference this year, I was interested,” Kulzer said. “After working out the logistics of keeping the butter cool, they decided they wanted a bust of Pope Leo and another butter block carved into their logo.”

Scampywife knows Gerry Kulzer, the sculptor. He is kind enough to share some butter with us on occasion - which is damned good. Here is some additional reading - light history of his journey and work.

What’s it like sculpting something that you know will somehow be used and eventually destroyed?

All pottery is meant to be used. So use it. Drink out of it. Eat off the plate. Use that pottery. It’s the same with the butter here, I think. It’s butter. Let’s use it. Take that and use it for what it’s meant for.

It is April 13. For those who have not yet completed their taxes: Are you in a committed relationship with TurboTax? May you have the best of luck with your internet connection, the missing forms that were ‘right there,’ and your race against time.

Remember, a good accountant can find humor in depreciation.

Looks like people are running behind this year. And/or less tax filers. 2026 returns filed (so far). Link goes to irs.gov. Total returns e-filed through 4/8/2010 were 78.4M, with $61.4B in direct deposit refunds. As of 4/3/2026 98M returns have been e-filed, with $242.8B in direct deposit refunds.

Each year the IRS provides weekly cumulative statistics for returns filed, returns processed and refunds issued during the filing season and then at certain points after the filing season. The statistics compare totals as of Friday compared with the corresponding Friday in the prior year.

Forbes crunched some numbers. Seems the public has, "Where is my money at" on their brains.

While filing activity has been slower, taxpayer engagement has surged. IRS.gov has recorded 435,926,000 visits so far this season, a sharp 58% increase over the same period last year. Taxpayers appear to be checking their refund status more frequently or seeking clarity on tax law changes thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).

It's all about the arms. Nanotyrannus: The Tyrannosaur Dwarf Tyrant.

Perhaps the most anatomically decisive feature is the forelimb. Nanotyrannus possesses arms and hands that are absolutely longer than those of T. rex, not just longer in proportion to body size. This distinction is critical: as animals grow, limb bones lengthen—they do not shorten.

The hands appear more functional than the famously reduced arms of T. rex, suggesting a greater role in prey handling or stabilization. While still small relative to body size, the forelimbs of Nanotyrannus fit a predator that retained more versatility in its front limbs.

A full-size replica would fit nicely in a yard next to the full size T-Rex.

Unexpected / stood out. Was in the Charlotte airport on Easter Sunday, dodging Bloody Marys and Screwdrivers while housing a glazed cinnamon donut, when over the intercom came an announcement for a 10:30 a.m. Catholic Mass in the airport. Looked around for reactions and either everyone was deaf or the easily offended were not around. They repeated the announcement two more times before I boarded my flight - and for a moment, Gate A39 felt almost like holy ground.

In that spirit, let’s take a look at some interesting churches and chapels.

Skull Chapel.jpg

Skull Chapel - Kaplica Czaszek - Poland That is a lot of empty eye sockets looking your direction.

Within the modest-looking St. Batholomew's Church (also called the Kaplica Czaszek) are the skulls and bones of over 3,000 people, decorating the ceiling and walls, and arranged in various patterns—mostly in a repeating crossed bones Jolly Roger-style—with another 21,000 skeletons stuffed in the church crypt below. Collected by Czech priest Vaclav Tomasek and J. Langer, the local gravedigger, it took the pair some 18 years, from 1776 to 1794, to collect, clean, and arrange as many as 24,000 human skeletons that pack the church. While the majority of the skeletons are stacked in a 16-foot-deep crypt beneath the church, the rest are beautifully displayed in what Tomasek saw as a "sanctuary of silence."

Now we are talking! Church in Belgrade with chandeliers made out of bullet casings, swords, rifles, and cannon parts.

Some interesting churches in North America.

Moderately amusing news

Sheep invade German grocery store. There's a political affiliation joke in here somewhere. Video at the link.

He said he wasn’t entirely sure how they broke from the rest of the flock, but he speculated the group was distracted by acorns on the ground and eventually wandered in the vicinity of the store before spotting someone carrying a tote that resembled one of their feed bags and following them inside.

Golfed with a guy over the weekend that took a Waymo taxi while in Phoenix. Not this one, however.

A Phoenix business owner captured a scary scene involving a Waymo driving on a light rail track with a passenger inside.

Fake Maple Syrup. Scandal. Canada, of course.

Enquête purchased five cans of Bourdeau's syrup at random from different stores and from different batches and took them to the provincial laboratory responsible for testing and assuring quality control for maple syrup in Quebec, le centre ACER, for analysis.

The results were unequivocal.

All five cans, each labelled pure maple syrup, contained at least 50 per cent cane sugar.

55 I filled in my tax forms for the feds a month ago, and got the thankfully modest sum e-payment in last week. But I must remember to get the forms in the mail tomorrow. I suppose I should schlep to a post-office to make sure it gets dated Apr 14th instead of just using the mailbox.

I intended to do it today, but my horse bucked me off yesterday so I'm taking it easy. Maybe I'll just walk to the mailbox tomorrow and hope for the best. They were paid in good time so the postal stamp on the forms shouldn't matter too much anyway. It annoys me to have to fill out the forms. I'm pretty sure the IRS already has all the information since I'm a standard deduction filer. They should have an option on the w-4 for "standard deduction, just send me the bill or refund"

81 Howdy, all,

I've been away from the blog since morning and see I've missed some interesting things, like the business with Gen Z and their anxiety packs. To be fair, Boomers had theirs: We called them "six-packs" or "fifths," or "bottles of Valium or Miltowns." An ice pack and a fan are a lot healthier -- and I guess cheaper than a fifth of even cheap bourbon nowadays.

Anyway! I told Miss Linda about my plan to travel to Kansas this week. She was not feeling well, but I couldn't wait any longer. The silence was deafening and the enthusiasm was about the same as if I'd told her I was returning Stirling to his shelter . . . in fact, she'd have been downright vocal about *that*. Showing her pics of houses in Kansas and the travel brochure with the bison herd? Nothing.

Well. There's nothing I can do about any of that. It is what it is.

Howz ever'body tonight?

First I had heard of it. Maple syrup is not on my usual shopping list, but it is far superior to synthetic syrups made from cane sugar or worse sugars. If you are going to sell an expensive artisanal food product, it damn well better be pure and authentic. IIRC, the State of Kentucky is pretty diligent about preserving the purity of bourbon, too.

There should be no withholding.
All taxes must be paid in cash or check in full.
The date of payment shall be the Thursday prior to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

(The first Tuesday after the first Monday in November is Election Day.)

It puts all of those taxes on you as a single burden - not hidden in your paycheck - and it doesn't work as a forced savings account (expecting to get something back out of what you gave to the gov't). And right before you go into the voting booth in a few days and decide who should be deciding how much you should pay.

Would it suck for all the taxpayers? Yes, that's the point.

They're going to try to land on the rim of Shackleton Crater at a near permanent sun-lit peak, and then the hopper is going to jump off into one of the permanent shadowed regions in the crater and look for water in the dirt. The hopper has a little drill on it.

237 I think I have an idea to help student debt issues.

The maximum loan amount for a student is based on the 10 year earning potential of everyone who pursued that major. If the average over the 10 year period, including dropouts, is $500k, the loans are limited to $25k. If it's $1m, the max is $50k. If graduates start at less than 25% over minimum wage, the limit is zero.

The school, college, or university issues the loans. Not guarantees, issues. If the student defaults, the school loses.

247 Its going to be an interesting balancing act pointing out that "Pope" Leo is a poofter, while simultaneously reminding the earnest and theologically correct members of the Catholic Church that we respect their strict adherence to Biblical truth (mostly, and not worth quibbling about at this point).

I'm Lutheran, not Catholic. But the Catholic Church is the only real reason that Baptist churches don't have lesbian "pastors" wearing roller skates conducting regular Sunday services. The overwhelming entirety of the "Christian" denominations are largely sellouts to "trends" rather than *truth*.

WASHINGTON, DC, Eric Swalwell announced he is resigning from Congress following multiple sexual misconduct and sexual assault allegations, in a statement that landed with the exact grace of a vending machine falling down a flight of stairs.

His press release aimed to strike that classic political balance between “these allegations are false” and “I have made mistakes,” giving readers the rare luxury of watching a PR team perform a three-legged sack race directly into a river.

Witnesses described the rollout as deeply serious, highly emotional, and somehow still written in the tone of a man asking if there’s any way to make this all go away by close of business.

Senior Democrats praised the move as responsible, courageous, and long overdue, since yesterday, which in Washington is usually what you say right before pretending he doesn’t have compromising pictures of you.

At press time, aides were reportedly clearing out Swalwell’s office, including a ring light, one monogrammed coffee mug, and a folder marked “if this leaks, act shocked

253 My taxes are not complicated anymore. When I owned a small retail business, I spent the money on an enrolled agent tax preparer, who kept me from both bankruptcy and jail.
Now (retired. - no W2s) I have SS, a bunch of 1099-int from bank accounts and some old insurance policies, 1099-R from IRAs, AND 1099-div. The div income is the only complicated part, but I use Vanguard and Fidelity brokerages, and their end of year documentation spells out qualified and non-qualified. The only part of my taxes that requires any real effort on my part has to do with capital gains.
That said, I've used Free Tax USA for the last three years with no problems. With the forms I get electronically, the program extracts the data, making it even simpler.
It's free for the federal forms and less than $20 for the state.
(Formal declaration - nobody paid me to say this, and I gave them my own money for the AZ return.)

Yeah I'm still trying to find out if the guys are actually up to that ride. Some are, but others I'm not sure. One dude rides nothing but old shovelheads. All in nice shape, but not something you want to scream along on a highway for hours, so they'll be looking to do back roads. Half of them seem to ride from bar to bar. We took an 80 mile ride up to stokes state forest where we rented a cabin for a few days to do some nice roads up there, It's maybe a 2 hour ride from here doing it on back roads, and it took us 5 hours because of all the stops. I think laconia is 335 miles from here. God only knows how long it would take with them.

289 Good evening! On Tuesday the 13th, Aaron Lewis turned 54. As a singer-songwriter and musician, he is mostly known as lead singer and rhythm guitarist of post-grunge/alt-metal band Staind; but he has also had a solo career in country music since 2010, which I didn't know until just now.

One of the many things I like about AI-powered search is the ability to ask for a deep cut that showcases a particular musician's ability, when I'm only familiar with their radio hits myself, and it really came through here! This sweet and slow 2008 song kind of previews his future genre transition, in a fusion that I really like:

A few decades back in an engineering drafting class we got to watch a sort of "how it' made" for lost wax featuring Thompson gun manufacturer. The widget was the brass hammer and some other brass castings.
The original model was used to make a reusable mold from which hundreds of wax castings were made, assembled into a tree, dipped in a slurry, then the wax melted out before the tree was used put on a centrifuge and filled with molten brass...

Studebaker's union problem was that they never took a big strike; always bargained and settled instead, so wound up saddled with some of the highest labor rates in the industry. Swalwell's punishment is to be eaten by Katie Porter? I guess it's one way to consolidate the Democrats running for CA governor.

316 Wrong. It was Hank Snow, who was from Canada.

321 Back up there aways, Anna Puma commented, "Alan Moore is a complete nutter but he did give us Rorschach."

Moore's work with Rick Veitch on Swamp Thing was pretty trippy.

To be fair, Rorshach's persona was Moore's reinterpretation of Steve Ditko's The Question, and echoed (if darkly) Ditko's hard righteous attitude.

(For any unclear on the history, after DC acquired the Charlton comics superdupers, Moore was tapped by DC to write them into the DC universe, but Moore's ideas were so awful, they had him keep the concept but change the whole thing to all-new characters in the standalone Watchmen. Which worked marvelously, so to speak.)

323 Phil Garner died Saturday. He was 76. He was a baseball player and coach. I remember him on the Pittsburgh Pirates 1979 team. Nickname, Scrap Iron. An infielder and solid player all around. Well regarded and liked. As a coach, won a NL Pennant with Houston. 90s sometime. Lost the WS against NYY. Not a HoF'r but a fine ball player.

RIP.

324 Yes, there were right to work states but industries are loath to move. Look how long it took Remington to understand that the state of New York wanted to kill them.

Studebaker was hot, looked hot, performed hot but didn't hang together like Ford or Chevy. There was no customer service back then so it had to be hang time, parts availability (Chevy beat them all), and ease of repair.

326 Berserker-
Does anyone have a 2500-3500 pickup?
For about $400-500/week, you could rent a 28-30 ft flatbed trailer that you could get 5 or 6 bikes onto. 330 miles is a leisurely 7 hrs.
When I moved, I hauled an ST1100 and a dirt bike along with a jeep on a 26' flatbed.

Posted by: buddhaha at April 14, 2026 12:53 AM (CRvdY)

Well we got a few trucks and a few bike trailers between us, so thats not a problem. I think its more of a what kind of sad sack flaccid dick mofos who are seasoned riders can't handle a 335 mile ride. These guys have multiple bikes each, and they have ones that can easily do that ride. They're talking about doing sturgis one year, and as someone who did that 10 years in a row I have definite doubts they could handle it. 2-300 mile days out there is not uncommon. I look at Laconia as a test, it will weed out the crowd.

Yes, as I said, twangy. That was 1961 Hank Thompson. I think a somewhat more true Oklahoma accent was Woody's cousin Jack Guthrie, 1945.

331 You'd think this thread would go on into the morning considering how early it is on the west coast relative to the east coast.
West coast must go to bed early and rise early in order to heft the heavy tax burden they live with.
Why else would they leave the welcoming arms of AoSHQ?

337 LOL, Braenyard.

It's about 10:30pm here-- some of us "29 year olds" check out by then!

Insomnia keeps me here, even when I've nothing to add to the convo. (More entertaining than anything on tv, for sure.)

It all comes to a screeching halt anyway, at 4am Eastern.

Some years back, there was an Irish group who came here for the local music & arts fest, and driving up from Tulsa they remarked how the low, rolling green hills reminded them of the Emerald Isle. This time of year, when we've had some nice rains and Spring has burst out all over, it's especially so. Under the blistering August sun with some drought, it can be not quite as much so.

341 All the fields around here are lovely varying shades of green now, too. Some are turning bright yellow with canola flowers... the patchwork is very pretty.

Come summer, it all turns to depressing, desolate browns and golds. Dried to a crisp in the heat after harvest.
