Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Wild Rose)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2) Be kind. Be nice. The ban-hammer is omnipresent .
3) Running with sharp objects is not looked upon with approval. You have been notified.
4) Have a great weekend!

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

2/14 – L gave an update on her brother Ron. He has been in declining health for the last 6+ months, and has been transferred to a nice facility for hospice. They had been discussing this possibility for months. He would make improvements, then relapse, each time ending up more disabled. The best part is that he is at peace with the decision. He is aware enough to assist with the final plans and is enjoying parceling out his remaining possessions to family and friends. L’s daughter’s cardiac recovery continues. L says she cannot thank all sufficiently for the many prayers.
3/21 Update – Ron’s struggle is over. He died on 3/9. His 65th birthday would have been 3/22. His funeral was well attended and many people described him as their “best friend”. Despite never being married of having children, he leaves a legacy to be proud of. L’s daughter has finally recovered enough to start cardiac rehab. They expect great progress. L and her husband are rebuilding their relationship after putting it on the back burner for far too long, and working to get healthier. Thanks to everyone who prayed. It has meant a lot.

3/5 – IrishEi has learned that she needs major surgery on 3/16, and she would really appreciate prayers.
4/4 Update – Irish Ei posted her health update. She quit smoking 8-10 years ago, after reading Alan Carr’s “Easy Way to Quit Smoking”, on Ace’s recommendation. Since then, she has gone for the annual low-dose CT scan of her lungs that is offered to smokers/former smokers. They were always negative, until this year. She had one very small spot, which was confirmed as Stage I CA. The spot was removed, and no chemo or radiation is needed. She has been home for a week and is feeling better and stronger every day. She did want to encourage everyone to take whatever screenings are offered. She had no symptoms at all, and her doctor had suggested that she could stop with the annual CT scans. But early detection is crucial.

3/10 – Update on Susan, who we have been praying for as she battles cancer. She is hospitalized again with an infection in her colon that quickly turned bad. The doctor says the signs are sepsis but they are running tests to make sure. The good news is that the pancreatic cancer was and is responding to the chemo and her cancer numbers are going down. God bless and thank you!
3/23 Update – Susan finally was able to come home. She is doing better than expected. Thanks to everyone for your prayers.

3/14 – Retired Buckeye Cop asks for prayers for Mrs. Cop’s cousin, “A.B”. He has been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. He is a retired police officer who was hit by a car years ago. He attempted to deal with the pain by self-medicating with too much Tylenol, which ended up poisoning his liver. His only alternative is a liver transplant, but he is uncertain if he wants to have surgery.
3/21 Update – A.B.’s situation isn’t quite as dire as originally thought. It’s still bad, but his readings are better than originally thought.

3/18 – TecumsehTea requests prayers, as her husband was fired from a job he enjoyed very much on 3/17. Prayers are needed for peace, direction, and clarity. They trust God will provide the right job at the right time, and that He would give them peace in the waiting. TecumsehTea is still dealing with the effects of her heart attack last July. Prayers for healing, as her BP continues to be unstable. Chronic Lyme disease and autoimmune disease complicates everything. She trusts that God is faithful and good and He will take care of their needs.
4/8 Update – TecumsehTea reports that God heard lots of prayers on their behalf, and has blessed MrTea with a new job. He starts 4/20. It has a shorter commute and a pay raise. Praise God for His provision. She is also seeing some improvement in her blood pressure. It seems to be leveling out, which she is very thankful for. Many thanks to all who prayed for them.

3/21 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her son, who is still looking for work. He has a horticulture major, and would ideally like something related to research, but he is certainly willing to labor outdoors.

3/21 – Count de Monet gave prayers of thanks for a son who has been accepted into the IBEW Apprenticeship program. He will earn while he learns for 4 years on his way to becoming a Journeyman Electrician.

3/21 – pookysgirl asked for prayers as they start IVF again.

3/22 – Retired Buckeye Cop has a happy prayer request. His 16 year old grandson said he is feeling a call to the priesthood within the Catholic Church. He is a devout young man who has particular compassion for the poor. (He thinks he might want to be a Franciscan friar.) Please pray for L. H. as he pursues the vocation of religious life.

3/24 – GMAC posted that he has received his death sentence. His prostate cancer has metastasized into his bones. Medication will slow it down, but there is no stopping it. He doesn’t know how much time he has, but plans to do some travelling while he can. He sends his compliments to “the wittiest group of morons” he has ever had the pleasure of reading. He will still be lurking.

3/28 – Cosda posted the happy news that a new grandson should be arriving on 3/28.

3/28 – Defenestratus asked for prayers for grief at the loss of a dear friend and boss of 20 years, who passed away unexpectedly on St. Patrick’s Day.

3/28 – San Franpsycho posted that Pnina bat Surel is not improving, sadly. She has had a third hospitalization, and this has taken a toll on her. She is not bouncing back like she has before.

3/28 – From about The Time posted that prayers would be appreciated after the last chemo treatment for Lymphoma. It went reasonably well - thanks for the prayers.

3/28 – Hrothgar asked for prayers for a dear and long time close friend and former neighbor, Daniel, who is scheduled for open heart surgery in mid-April. Prayers for his wife would be appreciated as well, as she will be carrying a heavy load for the next few months.

3/28 – NR Pax posted an update on his father, who we had prayed for in January after his stroke. Dad is going through PT and OT every day at home. Mom got some cooperative people at the VA and a note was put in his record that he was not to have any appointments more than fifteen miles from his house. Things are still rough as Mom is handling things like taxes, investment accounts, and the banking. And Dad’s condition is stable, but it will change sooner or later. But they are living in a great retirement community and he’ll be taken care of.

3/28 – Jordan61 posted that Mr. Jordan61 is back in the hospital. His sepsis has returned and gotten into where his compression fracture is, and he has vertebral osteomyelitis. The doctor is supposed to come in today and let them know the plan.

4/3 – Teresa in Fort Worth posted an update. Her chemo seems to be holding things steady for now. Unfortunately, as she is receiving a steroid, she has gained about 25 pounds. Her blood sugar has also jumped up about 40 points (which only happens when she is on steroids).

4/4 – Reforger posted that his wife’s father passed away on 4/3. After a 50 year battle with Hep C, he fell and broke his neck. He lasted about a month, in and out of induced comas, and now the pain is over. Reforger lost his father on Holy Saturday (years ago) and now his wife lost her father on Good Friday.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

I got Mom out for a walk Thursday, on a nice path near the house by a golf course. She was feeling pretty good, and opted not to sit and rest on the bench on our first pass by it. We rested on the way back, but probably not long enough. On the way back to the car, she was struggling up the slope, but didn’t want to stop and sit on the walker seat. We made it to the car, and that’s where it all went south.

As I was trying to get her turned to get in the car, she lost her strength and the walker smashed up against the open edge of the door. She couldn’t move her feet or legs, and started sinking to the ground. I was trying to lift her back up, but she didn’t have anything left to push up with. Now she was tangled inside the walker, knees on the ground, and I know it was hurting her.

13 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 47 brisk degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with a high in the mid 50s predicted.

I finished the chapter I was working on yesterday, though I'm not happy with it. However, there are still rewrites to be done, so it will be enough for now. I've got a scene to sketch out today, but once that's done, I'm not planning to do anything but sit and read.

She was starting to cry, and said, “where is a helper when you need one?”
AT THAT MOMENT, a truck pulled up beside us, and a young man hopped out and ran over to us. Friends, I am here to tell you, Jesus sent us a weightlifter! “Can I just pick her up and put her in the car?” he asked? “Oh, gosh, you can do that? Yes! Yes!”
He scooped her up like she was a child, and set her in the seat. We were so grateful! We thanked him, and he made sure we were ok, and got his dog and trotted off on down the path. GOD. IS. GOOD.

15 I wake up at 6:15 (although I would have liked to have slept longer) because the cat was yowling to go outside.
We let him be an indoor/outdoor cat because a) he likes it and b) that way we don’t have to deal with a stinky litter box in the house. And lack of litter box is why I get up and let him out when he yowls.

We had one cat who was highly intelligent, she knew we didn’t like to be woken up and if she just had to pee, she’d jump into the bathtub and pee directly down the drain. Caught her doing it a couple of times, was amazed she figured that out. Lived to be 17 or 18, one of our favorite pets ever.

Had a couple of disturbing incidents during Lent. Occasionally, circumstances dictate I fulfill my Sunday Obligation at my local Novus Ordo parish. There are no Communion rails and the Eucharist is distributed by Extraordinary Ministers. So be it, but I won't, for good and proper reasons, take Communion in the hand.

A few weeks ago, I went up to receive. I'm rather tall and the Extraordinary Minister was rather short. I don't know what happened, but she didn't place it properly and the Host fell to the floor (no Communion plate). Needless to say, I was mortified. Catholics believe (or are supposed to believe) in the Real Presence.

I was willing to pass it off later as a one-off occasion, but I had to attend the Easter Vigil Mass there. Different Extraordinary Minister, but very nearly the same catastrophe.

In the absence of a rail or kneeler, my balance won't let me kneel to receive. So the only real option is not to receive at all. This is annoying.

Yes, thank you! That church parking lot where we park is always empty--I've never seen another soul there. I was going to have to call a squad to help me get her up, but I couldn't even get her onto her side, because she was tangled up in and under the walker. She would have been in agony while waited.

27 Dash what a great story

I am sure he was very gentle but just a note of caution that elders who have fallen depending on circumstances could be injured if not lifted properly. Doing so safely requires some training. A good rule is if the person is clearly injured or cannot assist in any way in getting up, to call 911 and ask for a "lift assist"

30 Yesterday's "God incident" in which I am blessed by seeing the love, grace, kindness, etc of God. There were handmade signs- possibly made by kids- at a local church. They ( 2 of them) said -on bright, yellow paper "Thank you, Jesus!" I thought it was a sweet way to give thanks for the resurrection and it gave me a smile.

If you were pulling CQ duty or cramming for an exam, Folger’s was the Stuff. Make a strong pot, and you’d be bouncing off the walls. Forget studying, but at least you were awake.

It's a problem with poor training of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (not a fan of that ministry, myself). Someone should be in charge of their training. We had the same problem, and I was able to get their trainer to let them practice distributing the Host upon the tongue by using unconsecrated hosts.

38 I sent an update to Annie's Stew but I guess it was too late to make the prayer thread this week. Mr. Jordan61 was released from the hospital on 4/1, and I'm administering IV antibiotics every 8 hours for six weeks. He's bed-bound and was in a LOT of pain, nothing they gave him would even touch it. Not oxy, fentanyl, dilaudid, nothing. Fortunately the last couple of days have shown improvement, the pain has lessened, and he's been able to sit up a bit and even stand for a few seconds with the assistance of a walker.

40 !!! I knew that, thanks. Fred Haise. Possibly one of the coolest guys alive, ever.

He does a lot of live podcasts and “interacts” as the kids say, with viewers. Really cool, I told him I wish he would do that once a week.

I always thought Alan Shepard was an asshole, bumping all those guys in line. He hadn’t flown for about ten years, and since he was in charge of the astronaut office scheduled himself to be on the next mission. Apollo 13. They decided he needed to train more, however, and swapped crews to 14.

Anyway, that’s basically why Haise lost his chance

44 "If you were pulling CQ duty [...]"

As an SDO, I'd do one of my rounds around 4am local time; if you're going to find someone working a non-constant night shift, that's when they'll nod off. I'd fuck with the sleeping CQs that I found by writing an entry in their logs that I found them asleep and then ask their company 1SGT the next day if there was something odd in the company CQ log.

Yeah, I could have lit up the sleeping CQ and put that in MY log, but I thought that letting the company 1SGT know that HIS CQ was fucking up without battalion knowing about it would end up with better results.

If you are really tall, it's always going to be a problem for anyone to give communion on the tongue if they are short (having been in a Church with a priest giving communion from a wheelchair, this is not gonna be limited to lay ministers). Have you thought about buying and donating a single portable heavy duty kneeler with rails for the Church, that could be used either at the beginning or end of the Communion process for anyone who wants to receive on the tongue? It wouldn't be an expensive purchase.

47 Thanks for the prayers for Mrs. Cop's cousin, "A.B." He was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver due to taking too much Tylenol to self-medicate chronic pain (he's been hit by a car years ago - back when he was a police officer). He was told he would need a liver transplant.

He got a 2nd opinion and testing determined his "liver score" was 15 (21+ means transplant time). Bad but not at critical as initially thought.

He went to the Cleveland Clinic for a 3rd opinion, and testing found that his score had dropped to 9 and a liver transplant was not even something to consider. The doctor suspected a reaction to Ozempic, told him to stop taking it and see him in 6 months.

This all has been within a couple of months.

It's a problem with poor training of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (not a fan of that ministry, myself).

It's all part and parcel of the same insidious operation. Something is changed for extraordinary reasons. The emergency becomes normal. Then the normal becomes mandatory.

Thus we've moved from receiving on the tongue to receiving in the hand. And from kneeling reverently to receive the Lord to standing. And if you don't do these things, you'll look performative and/or get chastised.

We are LCMS Lutheran, and our host is also consecrated, but we do receive in the hand. Used to be on the tongue, way back. I'm just curious. If it's too personal, disregard the question.

59 My God moment came about because the guy that had been cutting my hair for years decided he wanted to try his hand at being a car salesman. So he recommended a replacement.

She's a nice young woman, and her husband is police officer with experience in traffic crash reconstruction (my old skill-set). We got to talking about family and I discovered that she and her husband have been considering converting to the Catholic Church. I explained some of the teachings about the Eucharist, and recommended a couple of good introductory books.

She had obviously been doing her research and asked some very informed questions. I told her that I was a lay brother in the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) and one of our charisms is Study, so this was right in my wheelhouse.

60 Hadrian the Seventh,

The priest is the ordinary minister of Holy Communion.

Extraordinary ministers should only be used when there are not enough ordinary ministers.

I know that you already know that.

I never get in the line of an extraordinary minister. They don't have consecrated hands and neither them or me should be touching the Eucharist.

I can't speak for Hadrian, but I suspect his reasoning is the same as mine. The consecrated Host IS the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, not a symbol. I prefer to not to touch Him with my possibly dirty hands.

Hadrian, why do you prefer not to have the Host in your hand?

Catholics believe in the Real Presence. That is, that the Host, even the tiniest particle thereof, contains the whole of the Body and Blood of the Lord. It should, properly, be held only by the consecrated hands of a priest or ordained deacon. But let's leave that.

In the Traditional Latin Mass, during the Offertory the priest performs ablutions, cleaning his hands to make them worthy to hold the consecrated Host. After the Elevation, he keeps the right thumb and forefinger together thereafter. After Communion, he performs ablutions again, consuming the water, to return his hands to secular service. But the congregation cannot perform the proper ablutions to return their hands to normal usage. And this lack of care for the Sacred Species is why receiving in the hand is wrong.

Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at April 11, 2026 08:25 AM (ksbjf)

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at April 11, 2026 08:37 AM (tgvbd)

Very true. However, I'm optimistic that receiving in the hand and standing is being abandoned, and the centuries-old practice of kneeling and receiving on the tongue will be restored throughout the Church. Currently, there is no consistency: it all depends upon the bishop.

The reaction to Bp. Martin's edict that ONLY standing has been one of rejection. When communicants approach him to receive Communion, those able, will kneel to receive the Host upon the tongue.

The older "hippy" clergy within the hierarchy is rapidly dying-out

I entered the Church 20 years ago and Novus Ordo was what I learned, and what seems familiar to me, so standing on the hand was what I did.

Right after I retired from the Guard at the end of 2022 (kicked out for not taking the clot shot), I became an Extraordinary Minister and during our training we used unconsecrated hosts and water in the chalice to practice serving one another. It was very helpful, and our group rotated to we could see how height mattered.

When we got a new worship director, he began asking people to receive it on the tongue, and some kneelers were set up at the front as well, and they are seeing increasing use. I decided to move gradually, so I still stand but receive the Host on the tongue and perhaps tomorrow I will start kneeling. It is confusing and our liberal Old Guard does not like seeing the old ways come back.

My wife resisted it at first, and then flipped to full Trad Cath: kneeling on the tongue, dressed in black, wearing a veil.

A lot of people were formed that way. "Come as you are" and all that. I'm pleased to see so many of the young people are dressing up and approaching Communion with reverence and it is the young women who cover their hair now, which is lovely to see, all though the 29 year old set is also coming 'round. When my wife started covering her hair she felt very nervous at first, but then an older woman shyly approached her and asked her about it, where to get the veil and the next week she was doing it.

I think the liberal Catholics have really tried to make people think it is being a Pharisee rather than just being reverent.

Reminds me of when Sally Quinn (aka. the 2nd Mrs. Ben Bradlee) went to Tim Russert's funeral and wrote in the WaPo about it, including that she took communion because it made her "feel closer" to him. Tim was Catholic, while Sally identifies as Episcopalian and has never been Catholic. Imagine her surprise when even the liberal Catholics and non-Christians who read the Post told her she was wrong for doing so.

Same here. We have great priests at my parish. But, I can definitely see a difference in the youngest ones: much more orthodox about the Sacred Traditions.

That's why I'm optimistic. The laity is increasingly wanting those Sacred Traditions restored, and the old "hippies" (both lay-persons and clergy) are rapidly dying-out. The "off-Broadway theatrics" - to steal a phrase from Ralph McInerny (author of the Father Dowling mysteries) - are being rejected.

That's why you see petulant behavior from some of the hierarchy. They know that their "re-invention" of the Catholic Church will disappear shortly after they are all dead. The younger clergy wants to revert to the old forms.

132 We had some fun over Easter here at Chateau Lloyd. My father arrived earlier than expected, around 1 p.m., only a half hour after we got home from Mass. I had cooked the Welsh Lamb Stew before we left, and all it needed was to be reheated, but my wife thought we would eat at 3, and so had only gotten started. We improvised some ham & potatoes, whipped up a salad and finally sat down. While I was refreshing my father's coffee, he decided to eat, and the grandkids followed, only to be rebuked by their mother for noting waiting for the prayer. My father sullenly stopped and sat back.

Gave him his coffee, and had barely sad down when he said: "So can we say grace already?" So I did, using the Mark I mod 0 Catholic prayer, and as everyone but him crossed himself, he had this look of bewilderment on his face, and I almost laughed because I could tell he was thinking: "Who are these people? How did this happen to me?"

My father is very irreligious.

Yes. And unless they go out of their way to torment their flock, most parishioners have little idea who their bishop is or what he is doing. He's mentioned in the prayers, but it's the local priests that do the work. Our outgoing bishop (Earl Boyea) has been surprisingly visible over the last few years. Hardly saw him, but after Covid, I think he was radicalized (in a good way) and started doing public processions, even held a Mass at the Breslin Center. Very much about doing "shows of force" to raise the visibility of the Church, especially on campus.

It's working. Surging seminarians, vocations, massive numbers of conversions this year, the most in 20 years.

154 If people want to dig deeper, I have a blog post up on my site (link in nic), but it looks like 100,000 American adults entered the Church last week, a 38% increase from a year ago. This is big news, but as usual, we have folks who are compelled do to the "Um AKSHUALLY" and try to downplay what is going on.

Yes, it is true that total numbers of adults entering the Church remain historically low, but the trend has reversed a decades-long decline which bottomed out in 2020.

What is also significant is the reason for conversion. The vast majority of adults becoming Catholic have historically been people do so for family/marriage reasons, i.e. keeping a promise to Grandma or finding it more convenient to be able to take Communion with the rest of the family. The decline of Cultural Catholicism was largely driving the decline.

In recent years, the motives have been deeply personal, an individual desire rather than social conformity. I think that explains the surge in vocations vs overall numbers.

166 (cont) This also rebuts the claim that more people are leaving the Church than entering it. A big reason is that they are leaving the visible part: dying. Love 'em or hate 'em, the leading edge of Boomers is getting up there. This is just the way things are, so the absolute numbers will fall.

The Church is also losing a lot of liberal Catholics, who are seeing icons go back up on the plain white walls and beige paint being stripped from the pews. The tan carpets are being torn out and the beautiful tiled floors repaired. They don't like Latin creeping into the Novus Ordo Mass, but the young people love it.

It's a cliche to say the young are out future, but swarms of college kids finding faith is more important than keeping seasoned citizens happy, and yes, our parish is seeing donations drop even as Mass attendance soars.

Those grandchildren produced six children, three of which are mine. At last report, perhaps one of the five kids is still Catholic. Five of their six great-grandkids and both of their great-great-grandkids are Catholic. Evelyn Waugh smiles.
