Trump Accepts Deal for Two Week Ceasefire, Saying Sides Are Very Close to a Permanent Deal

Sorry I had to get out and do the sanding and varnishing before I lost the light.

I think this is Trump looking for an easy exit but it's possible he's just biding time.

The price of oil moves partly on information but mostly on speculation. Traders bid up the price of oil in anticipation of a shortage later, at which point they can sell for a big profit.

Trump has been playing games with oil traders letting them know: Do not get too far over your skis selling and buying oil for too high a price or I will claim that we are very close a deal or otherwise inject news into the headlines that will cause the price of oil to fall and you to lose money.

So... did he do this to send a shock to oil traders?

I don't know but Clay Travis says oil prices are plunging.

Iran began launching drones and missiles at both UAE and Israel.

One can hope for the best, but this certainly looks like a win for the islamic republic.

Remember that we started this particular campaign. They were content at the time to quietly build their missiles and advance their nuclear research. Because we started the fight their primary goal was to survive, which they have. The particular people are now younger, and have been promoted early, but the regime itself is the same.

Second, their particular approach to the war, attack civilian infrastructure in any country they can reach, and traffic in Hormuz, until pressure was put on Trump to call of the fighting, clearly succeeded. So they accomplished both their general and specific goals for the campaign.

We on the other hand are apparently getting a player to be named later. in #twoweeks. But we should celebrate because the TV tells us the fighting is over, or something.

One can hope for the best, but this certainly looks like a win for the islamic republic.

Remember that we started this particular campaign. They were content at the time to quietly build their missiles and advance their nuclear research. Because we started the fight their primary goal was to survive, which they have. The particular people are now younger, and have been promoted early, but the regime itself is the same.

Second, their particular approach to the war, attack civilian infrastructure in any country they can reach, and traffic in Hormuz, until pressure was put on Trump to call of the fighting, clearly succeeded. So they accomplished both their general and specific goals for the campaign.

The regular army was one of the most important factors that lost Iran for the Shah in 1978/79. I don't think his loyal units were anything like the IRGC, but they still held things together until regular military units started firing on them.

This plus a whole lot more. We need beaucoup drones. I don't know if the pentagon failed to send military observers to the Russia-Ukraine war but we used to do that kind of thing to learn about technology, strategy and tactics in foreign wars. Iran taught Russia about drones and supplied the technology. Russia combined it with EW which they have traditionally been strong in.

Israel needs to be resupplied with missile interceptors. So do the Gulf allies. So do we. We way underestimated Iranian capabilities with drones and missiles.

Pakistan says Iran claims to still have 15,000 missiles and 45,000 drones. An exaggeration, surely, but they still have a lot. We simply don't have the MOPs to take out all 27 underground "missile cities" each has multiple entrances.

And a coalition to effect regime change. Deride GHW Bush all you want, he knew how to build a coalition. Bush jr was not bad either.

What this does do is lower the temperature and let the US refresh its forces. Our guys have been working hard. ISR will map out what Iran is doing, so we can learn about new targeting opportunities.

And of course Iran can break the ceasefire. It's expected, and then all the "illegal war of aggression" people will have to come up with another excuse.

The bidding is anticipatory(though some of it relates to physical delivery on contracts and expiration dates) and causes production and consumption to expand or contract faster than an environment where stockpiles deplete to zero first.

In practice it's smoothing and brings price adjustments forward as well as spreading them making things less extreme.

See, it's possible for asymmetrical victory conditions. We just wan Iran neutered for a few years. Maybe President Vance can deliver the final blow. Or President Rubio, but the important part is to wreck Iran for the next few years.

And that has been achieved. So, by definition, a win.

If you define victory by your enemy's conditions, they can keep changing them, and then you always lose. We don't do that anymore.

It's what Trump has been demanding including his Tweet Heard Round Social Media. Open the Strait.

He's already said our military objectives have been met. Taking out their power plants and bridges was the threat to open the Strait. If the Strait is open at the time the deal states then the deal is off.

I'm not an expert. I may know exactly 1 of the reported 10 points of the ceasefire. I don't know if the ceasefire is supposed to start at a specific time or based on a specific set of conditions. I haven't seen anyone reporting any of those things but lots of people are telling us...

- that the ceasefire has been broken (although we don't know if it ever actually started)
- it happened because Trump wanted to do x, or y, or z.
- it's the stupidest thing ever and we've totally betrayed the Iranian people.

Yes, two opposing sides in a conflict don't necessarily have directly opposing goals. Which is what I was trying to explain to other posters upthread.

The problem with the approach you're suggesting is it's what Israel has been doing with the terrorist groups aimed at it, at least until very recently, which results in always having to come back and kick over the anthill again in a few years' time. It doesn't actually solve the problem, and gives people an excuse to think of it as a long term 'cycle of violence.'

I'd rather solve the problem once and for all and then move on to other problems.

I am not surprised. This war has been poorly covered and the weaknesses of social media along with the slop from main stream media means no one is really certain about anything.

Easier to just follow what Trump and Rubio say and not worry about the small stuff right now. It will keep until we find out. Worrying about it simply won't matter one way or another.

Just glad that our guys in the field are able to take a rest as they have done an incredible op tempo over the last month +. Easy enough to resume after a break if necessary (and judging by the Iranian track record, very possible on that).

FWIW, The Bush Sr decision was in part because he had a disparate international coalition opposed to toppling Saddam and the Saudis nor Kuwaitis did not want a Shia majority to rule in Iraq for obvious reason.

Trump has much less of a coalition problem by simply not inviting them to the dance.

So far, runoff turnout is 109k and counting. The primary for the special election was 115,800. Final vote total will likely exceed the special election primary but not by much.

258k in 2022 for the midterm. 378k for 2024 when MTG ran against the same dem.

There doesn't seem to be any will for this - among the Army or the general population.

I know. I know. They're unarmed and disorganized. Blah blah. If there were any widespread desire for a rising, we'd have seen *something* by now, even if it were feeble.

My suspicion is this: there are a lot of Iranians who'd like to see the regime gone, they are educated people, and the ones we see online all the time... but it's a far, far smaller proportion than the diaspora Iranians believe, or at least would have us believe, and they know if they make a move, their own countrymen will help the regime destroy them.

Just my suspicion. But I think we've been very misled about popular sentiment there. And I think that "we" includes Trump and Hegseth.

China gets a huge percentage of their oil from Iran, by far Iran's biggest customer. China also used to be Venezuela's biggest customer.

China probably isn't too happy about Iran being at war with us and getting the shit kicked out of them. Their economy is already taking it in the neck, largely thanks to sanctions.

Trump spent a good part of his press conference yesterday punking on the media for saying he didn't have a plan. He has one.
