One thing you notice right away is that the camera lingers on the players in the titles a lot longer than it would today. They stand there making uncomfortable looking faces of fake delight, which actually just creates a vague sense of unease.

The other thing you notice is that Sally Field is always bent at the waist when she's "flying" - almost as if she's suspended from a wire. Almost.

68 The usual wonderful Millais painting with the fine detail, appropriate use of color, effective light to establish a mood, and an emotional aspect. The subject is a bit different from the literary and mythological topics like Ophelia or Mariana. There's even a hint of irony in the scene and the title. The vale of rest, so calm, so serene versus the labor needed needed to create it.

I enjoy most of Millais' works but the paper book volumes are usually expensive. Fortunately Delphi has a collection of his paintings for Kindle for three dollars. I view it on a 10 inch tablet and the resolution is damn good.

91 Mom!

My late Mother was a nun for 14 years. Polish-American family. They 'drafted' them young. She was miserable there. Of her entire group, only a few stayed.

Fifty years later, they were still 'counseling' each other. I took care of Mom, 14 years, and I'd hear the conversations. Man-made institution full of people with clashing personalities with the same types of crap that goes on in any workplace.

She said they never picked up a Bible. They were always cleaning. She later taught. As was the deal, the convent took everything. It wasn't until she was in her 30's teaching in Canada that she learned how cheques worked.

Oh, convent > left > met Dad > married > Stateless 10 months later. Nothing scandalous. You mix any of that up...

Thanks CBD.

123 It was weirdo movie weekend:

1) "Operation Taco Gary's" - streaming on Prime
Fun, low budget comedy about a guy starting a new join Ottawa who gets hijacking by his loony conspiracy obsessed brother.I laughed several times and smiled throughout. Recommended for those with a loopy sense of humor.

2) "Dust Bunny" - I wanted to like it but didn't. Not sure who this movie is for. It's like a Very European, kid's horror movie fairy tale about a kid who hires a hit man to kill the monster beneath her bed. Sounds fun buuuut it's an incoherent mess. The most interesting thing is Sigourney Weaver's new almost unrecognizable face post-plastic surgery.

3) "The Mummy" - No mummy per se, more like an Egyptian-flavored version of The Exorcist with blobs of "Evil Dead" scattered about. Not great but it's okay. Kind of a bore until the third act. The Evil Dead info;uence detracts rather than enhances.

4) "The Running Man" -I prefer the Ahnold version. This is an angry antifa-flavored version filled with Democrat talking points. It's fine if you wish to be educated rather than entertained.

That's because people are living longer.

According to evolutionary theory, practically everyone has the genes for cancer, but-
those who died from it early didn't get to reproduce.

In folks, who reproduced then got cancer welp, their "delayed" cancer genes entered the gene pool

And overall, cancer got pushed back mostly to the ages past menopause and reproduction in general.

Other things could be at work, of course.

But, that theory always made sense to me.

172 The Vale of Rest
Sir John Everett Millais

Interesting, nicely done. And, there's a lesson there.

Not the Tate: Victorian Web org: Millais’s Vale of Rest and the Victorian Crisis of Faith

In part, "The composition makes for an arresting scene: two young nuns appear confined within the walls of a graveyard as one strenuously digs a grave while the other fixes a haunting gaze upon the viewer. Millais composed the scene so that the viewer stands, precariously, at the edge of a gaping grave as a majestic sunset while fills the sky. The Vale of Rest forms a group with Autumn Leaves (1856) and Spring (1859). These three paintings are may be read in terms of the transient nature of life: Time passes, seasons change, the sun will set, the day will end and death will come to all. To read The Vale of Rest as a simple memento mori, however, would be remiss."

Much more before and after, all worth reading imo.

"The promise of an eternal afterlife may be evaporating but the beauty of the natural world, in this life, is undeniable. It is present, it is available to all, and it is where the weary may find repose."

Ambivalent about hanging today's art selection.

Thanks.

174 The Vale of Rest for the one on the right. Not so much for the poorer sister diggin' the hole.

Alternatively, this is showing the ancient internal rivalry between sects of nunnery. The one sitting has a silenced .22 under her robes, and the one digging is digging her own grave. It's called "the eternal vow of silence."

It's a well done painting, though.

Alternatively, this is showing the ancient internal rivalry between sects of nunnery. The one sitting has a silenced .22 under her robes, and the one digging is digging her own grave. It's called "the eternal vow of silence."

It's a well done painting, though.

191 The Vale of Rest was painted in Perth, Scotland, but captures the Victorian, particularly, suspicion and romanticization of Catholicism, which was a subject of immense debate following the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829.

The painting portrays nuns in a "living burial" scenario, reflecting Victorian views of convent life as a complete withdrawal from the world.

The habits depicted are generic, though they reflect a generalized image of cloistered nuns.

Dallas looked like shit in game one and Oettinger is proving to be incredibly overrated. Getting drubbed 6-1 in game one at home isn't how you want to start a series.

They need to send a message tonight or this series is over before it ever started.

200 Read an interesting thing today. With Virginia on board this year, the popular vote initiative is up to 222 EVs. Michigan and Pennsylvania are razor thin GOP legislature with a Dem governor. If both flip in November that’s up to 256. After that a couple of purple states flip, there’s 270.

The left plays the long game. This idea started 20 years ago and was dismissed as a fantasy. Slowly but surely it’s been growing. And now it’s within the possibility of actually happening.

Lawsuits will fly of course and it may be struck down by courts. But the left doesn’t stop. They’re always fighting.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear a bid by parents to sue a public school district in Massachusetts over actions by teachers and officials to support the gender identity of students by not disclosing name or pronoun changes to parents without the child's consent.

The justices turned away an appeal by the parents of a student who had self-identified as "genderqueer" while attending a middle school in the Massachusetts town of Ludlow after a lower court threw out their lawsuit.

True. They start slow for some reason. Digging a hole isn't my idea of a way to go about things.

During my childhood back in the 50's, our parents would slather on a paste of Octagon soap and let it sit on the rash for a few hours. Wash it off and repeat. It would remove any remaining oils from the plant that were still on the skin. It was an old fashioned remedy, but it worked.

Two landmark decisions back in the twenties pretty much said this. Meyer v. Nebraska (1923) and Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925). Meyer was about a Nebraska law that forbid parents to teach their children a foreign language (WWI vintage), and Pierce dealt with Oregon trying to destroy Catholic private schools for K12 by making attendance to public schools mandatory.

Essentially both are natural law decisions noting that the family predates the existence of governments and it is a natural right for parents to be in charge of children's upbringing. This has been recognized through the centuries until the Commies got started in the 20th century with their bullshit.

However, since you now say Milo is a credible source Candace, I guess he’s being honest when he says your husband George Farmer is a homosexual male who likes to take it up the ass? Milo said your husband is getting “plunged”. See the screenshot below. 👇🏻
