This is a gorgeous painting. The landscape is natural, the colors of the foliage is soft and realistic, rather soothing. I especially like the flowers on the right. The oxen are almost photorealistic as is the pole fence. It reminds me of the hilly parts of the Shenandoah Valley.
The only part I don't like is the man's face. It seems blotchy, indistinct, compared to the rest of the image. Check out Waldmuller's other landscapes. They are lovely. What he does with nature and light is wonderful. Posted by: JTB at April 17, 2026 09:59 AM (yTvNw) 99

The Hill: Post-Trump laws will have to prevent abuses of power and personal enrichment. Four years into Trump’s unforeseen second term, his administration has figuratively bulldozed post-Watergate laws and norms while physically bulldozing the White House East Wing.
Ironically, as we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, we should collectively acknowledge the dangerous shift in modern presidential behavior from the “I am not a crook” president, forced from office, to the incumbent president’s “I am not a dictator,” denial of authoritarian leanings, and “sometimes you need a dictator.” Then, sometimes, you need to crown yourself king and portray yourself as Jesus. It has 9 proposals, all dumb, but due to space, I'll pick my favorite: Eighth, we need a law establishing a bipartisan watchdog organization to review what appears to be politically motivated weaponization of any agency or Cabinet department that unleashes the power of the federal government, charging or threatening to charge any federal official who worked with, or in, a previous or current administration. I look at it as akin to Clive Cussler paying people to come up with plots for his Dirk Pitt novels, or James Patterson 'collaborating' with unknown authors, adding his 'unique voice' to their writing. If I ever used it for a new Theda Bara novel, it would be as a foundation to build on and not a storyline to be slavishly copied. April 17, 1970 – Apollo 13 Crew Returns
On April 17, 1970, Apollo 13 astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. ,“Jack” Swigert and Fred W. Haise, splashed down in the Pacific Ocean 600 miles southeast of American Samoa, successfully concluding a six-day mission that nearly ended by disaster. The crew was retrieved by helicopter and transported to the recovery ship, the USS Iwo Jima. Two days after launch and 205,000 miles from Earth on their way to the Moon, the explosion of an oxygen tank in their Service Module robbed their Command Module (CM) Odyssey of power and oxygen. The astronauts took refuge in the Lunar Module Aquarius, and through judicious conservation of resources and expert guidance from the teams at Mission Control, the spacecraft designed to support two men for two days kept three men alive for four. Sounds like the new "The Mummy" is more like the Exorcist combined with Evil Dead with - nary a cloth-bound mummy in sight. This sound a lot like the recent "remake" of the Wolfman where the lycanthrope was absent as well. I'll probably see it this weekend but if you don't want to make "The Mummy", don't call your movie "The Mummy". Posted by: naturalfake at April 17, 2026 10:37 AM (iJfKG) 203

It's the Snowes and the McCains who gladly become the vessel to thumb the GOP voters in the eye who are the bigger problem. Cowards who run away when highlighted are manageable issues. Assholes who delight in fucking us over are not manageable. The latter are far fewer now than before. It's funny how there's literally no one left that can publicly and lausibly lecture Trump anymore. They had Romney and then Cheney and of course a whole host of Democrats and although Newsom and AOC have tried they aren't getting much of a foothold. Starmer is a joke. Getting shot and then reelected plus the way he bashed any comers and has spread his wings into so many areas has gotten things to the point where all they have left is the Pope.
They needed the Fake Epstein Op to take him down, using "his own side", but he put it down in the crib. And no one understood why he responded the way he did - by calling some of his followers crazies etc. Least of all the people who had calculated that he never would. All because he saw the op forming. Remarkable. Posted by: ... at April 17, 2026 10:47 AM (RbWJI) 236

Want new music (including rock) and/or a variety of old music? You have to have some type of source other than over the air radio.
I pay for SiriusXM and also a premium Spotify account. Runs me around $20 a month to have both. I listen to music far more frequently that I watch TV/movies. I get every penny worth of value out of those. Far more valuable to me than when I used to pay that amount and more for streaming TV/movie services. Those who say there is no new rock music probably aren't looking for it. It's out there. Just don't expect to be exposed to it the way we were in the 70s/80s/90s. A month later, they were at 59. As a result, Obamacare was signed into law after the House was done with it instead of them sending it back to the Senate for further "fixes". The terminal, constant mistake Republicans make is to underestimate the Democrats and their willingness to not just defy tradition, but their appetite to corrupt our institutions and install the progressive agenda- which as Justice Thomas so eloquently just pointed out is a post constitutional vision. I wonder what it will take for people to realize the current Democrat Party isn’t the party it was ten or even three years ago. Their adherents have murdered Republicans and tried to kill the opposing candidate for president. As a party they used Covid to essentially trample the Bill of Rights. They have corrupted the courts and used government against the people who are the rightful owners. They have, and are, demonstrably, undermining the electoral system to gain and keep power. They have no limits and that’s not hyperbole, it’s fact. Now- there is a lot of pushback. And court cases have provided some clear limits on various objectives they have. But if you think for one minute they will not corrupt every auspice of government and republic to gain power, you are wrong. Madison is correct. A lot of the Democrat stuff is pure incrementalism. The Uniparty will Uniparty. Their goal last time around was to quietly sling the border wide open, transport as much filth here as possible, solidify the "vote" everywhere, and graft graft graft graft while continuing to divide everyone,,inflame tensions and keep as many people miserable as possible while celebrating Satan. And in that I say they were a success.
We can expect more of a lot of the same next time around. They don't have to be shock and awe in every area, they are happy just to keep making money, beating the Washington Generals and continuing the country's headlong dive into the abyss. Posted by: ... at April 17, 2026 11:04 AM (RbWJI) 299

Posted by: Stateless - He ain't heavy, he's my dog. Old, but full of life. at April 17, 2026 10:37 AM I loathed the commute-time DJs on Detroit's classic rock station, Drew and Mike. I guess they were cutting edge sometime in the '70s, but by the late '90s they were trash. Stupid political takes, crank calls to old celebrities, etc. I started listening to the classical station out of Detroit because the only commentary is on the composers or the musicians. I just got a "new" clock radio - as in, a Sony Dream Machine at a thrift shop - and the frequency for it and a Canadian station are close. To my surprise, CBC Radio Music actually has some good stuff early in the morning - and the commentary is on the artist and/or the album. Posted by: NaughtyPine at April 17, 2026 11:13 AM (fxCK2) 302
