What're all y'all using for targets? In order to get appropriate feedback from all of those fundamentals you're focusing on, you need to change your targets frequently. I am constantly amazed how someone will go to the range and proceed to put 50 or 100 rounds through a single printed paper target, and at the end of the session look at the shredded remains approvingly. What, if any, information on your shooting is to be to be gathered from the resulting mess? I can only surmise part of the issue is the cost of the targets themselves.

What if I told you there was a better way?

Replace your targets after each magazine or cylinder in the case of revolvers.

Q: Weasel, how can you possibly go through so many targets without going el broke-o?
A: It's easy.

What I do is make my own targets. They're not fancy, but they get the job done. I buy a ream of 8 1/2 x 11 inch copier paper and a roll of 1 inch colored stickers and bingo! Instant targets at a cost of about 2 cents each.

Spend the money you save on ammo.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

17 Did get to the range and did NOT forget the 9mm ammo this time. Gun drills were dot torture and draw+fire double taps. Gun was my CZ P-07 with compensator. It...was not fast. Basically the comp snags on my holster and the heavy (but smooth) DA trigger pull really slows me down. Accuracy is good.

Next week, I'll try a different CZ P-07, either my DAO custom or my stock CZ P-07 without red dot.

24 I bought a pack of 50 targets from my local freedom store awhile back and still haven't exhausted them. I use the "masking tape over my hits" strategy to re-use the target until it's no longer viable.

Sorry, Ben Had, I was celebrating Easter (Palm Sunday for me) with friends.

Dinner for next Sunday is some sous vided lamb with lots of garlic and rosemary, finished on the grill; some tzatziki; a ham; roasted potatoes; seared asparagus with a lemon ricotta bed and a mint vinaigrette. And good friends to enjoy it with.

To help compensate I just ordered one American box of 10mm HP. That's a thousand rounds to you in Rio Linda.

180 gr HP. Not the full power but a bit over 600 ft lbs.

29 I have a roll of cheap butcher paper that fits my target frame perfectly. I think I'll tack that on over the cardboard, and simply put black or orange dots all over it. I figure I can get 12 dots on it with plenty of room in between. Probably 20, but that's a lot of shooting!

What 10mm pistol do you have? I shot a friend's Glock long slide 10mm and it was great! Light recoil and very accurate. I am tempted, but know nothing about the pistols.

38 Range time this weekend consisted of shooting the H&K CC9 one handed from 7 yards or two handed at 10 yards. I did well, with only one flyer at the 7 yard targets. I also brought out my H&K SP5 to shoot at 20 yards (max distance at my indoor range. As expected, the SP5 is a tack driver at 20 yards.

"What you can see, you can hit. What you can hit, you can kill." My NCOs hammered that into all of us youngsters starting in ROTC Advance Camp. Drones have made it impossible to hide on the modern battlefield, especially if they're equipped with low light sensors (IR, thermal, starlight scopes, etc.). With the use of fiber optic cables, it's not just the front lines that are dangerous. You can be 20 km (12 miles) behind the lines and still be in mortal danger from drones. There's nowhere that's "safe" like earlier wars, not even bunkers or dugouts. Drones can navigate down the corridors and get to you even if you're inside fortifications like these.

But if you're the PBI (poor bloody infantry) or grunt out there at the point of contact, those countermeasures will never get there fast enough. Smaller jammers, point defense anti drone weapons and more are all in the labs undergoing development. But until you put them into the hands of the grunts (and they work), it doesn't matter if you have the coolest toys in the R&D pipeline.

64 Happy Easter y'all....finally finished dinner and taking a break before dishes. Giving much thanks today for our military rescuing the WSO, and for the administration for having the moral compass to pursue it. This is what I voted for. No range report today, nor will there be one week as we are in Pittsburgh again. On a different front, architect finally narrowing down the revisions on the house plans, so hopefully we break ground in TN very soon...just 8 minutes from the S&W Hqs!

There is still a place for firearms in close-quarters urban combat, assuming you can get enough people up to the front alive to have a fight.

Not really. See Eugene Stoner's work in the creation of the AR-7 for the same purpose. But the AR-7 is far more famous for its role as James Bond's attache case rifle in "From Russia With Love."

I agree with your assessment. Take a look at combat video of what the Ukrainians are carrying at the frontlines. Those guys now have four years of high intensity infantry combat under their belts, so they know what works and what doesn't. Most of them appear to carry 5.56mm NATO or 5.45mm Russian caliber rifles. Only a few pack heavier caliber .30 caliber platforms. The Ukrainians are increasingly turning to robot platforms (ground or air) to conduct the riskiest infantry combat missions like patrolling or scouting. In this respect, the US Army is way behind the power curve.

The rifle (AR-7s in the past, GAU-5s today) is part of the survival pack that's part of the pilot's ejection seat (I think). The pilot has a sidearm on their person.

Got a Rock Island. All steel 1911 format but in double stack. You can use it as a club if you run out of ammo.

Also have Springfield XD-M Elite 4.5" OSP. Almost as big as the Rock but a lot lighter. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

Neither could be considered concealed carry unless your usual wear is a big fluffy parka and snow pants. More suited for the nightstand.

Unless you have the budget the Big Green Machine has to work with, learning long range shooting is cheaper. Besides, RPG-7 warheads and TM-62 anti-tank mines (common drone payloads in Ukraine) aren't all that common here. BATFE might have an objection or two if you try to outfit your drones with those payloads.

112 Got a Rock Island. All steel 1911 format but in double stack. You can use it as a club if you run out of ammo.

Also have Springfield XD-M Elite 4.5" OSP. Almost as big as the Rock but a lot lighter. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

Neither could be considered concealed carry unless your usual wear is a big fluffy parka and snow pants. More suited for the nightstand.

You can carry that double stack .45 if you have steelworkers suspenders and and a long jacket. Way back yonder, I had a double stack Para Ordnance, shot great, carried miserable.

114 Same-ish here as 26. Took 2 juniors (.22 & .17) out to see the Easter bunny. Not a trace.
Told them their pigs wouldn't notice one fewer buckets of slop next feed time and got to hear the laughs when they saw the results of .17 velocity on root vegetables.

Those little racing drones might work quite nicely from a kinetic kill on the relatively larger one-way bomb drones. Just a matter of programming them to search out and hit any other drone up there. Little buggers go from 0 to 100+ in an instant.
