I'm still working on all the Fool music videos from the last couple ONTs, and now I have Bunny songs too... so I finally figured out a system. I moved all those music tabs to another window on the laptop screen, which is off to the left of the big monitor, so I can play them and read the blog at the same time! Another good one from a "media event" as they call it from Victor Glover:
https://is.gd/9VvQoS You're see what they call the "Overlook Effect" hitting him like a freight train there. He's reflecting and pondering. There have been only, what 24 men before who have seen the earth from that far away, and that small a "blue marble" with their own eyes. The effect occurs in orbit, with the earth looming much larger, but this, this is really something, the Blue Marble POV. Note his words, "Oasis in nothingness". It's hitting him big time. This is a quite profound experience. That's surprising, but true. The Apollo missions were timed such that it was lunar morning on the near side (this had to do with thermal conditions on the surface for landing and moonwalking operations), and thus that side of the (near) far side was in the dark. Apollo 17's command module pilot, during his lonely orbits, managed to get some shots of it with "earthlight", but it's never been seen in full sunlight by human eyes. Here is it, just coming into view on the right side. It's the right most little dark spot: https://is.gd/JmVuEA Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 05, 2026 05:03 AM (w6EFb) 30

The geologists and planetary scientists go crazy over Mare Orientale. It's a young impact basin, only 3.7B years old, just a baby. And it's very pristine, and represents a sort of reference, textbook impact basin. It's been imaged in high resolution by the various lunar orbiters, but one of the NASA geologists this afternoon was almost squeeing like a schoolgirl at thought of human eyes on it, and providing descriptions. The Artemis crew had some intense geology training so they could learn the language to exhaustively describe what they were seeing. What I can’t figure out, is the people who believe the Apollo program was fake.
Even when I was a little kid, when the first photographs were published (we had to wait weeks in those days) the full color images of the lunar surface were spectacular. I can only imagine how awesome it was zooking 50 miles above at a thousand miles an hour. Instinctively even a little kid knows there is no way to fake that “magnificent desolation”. There is something inherently frightening about this big ole Universe. We’re pretty small, put it that way. >> Can you give us a couple of the theories?
I know just enough to be dangerous -- leading theory goes like this. First the most accepted theory of Moon formation is giant impact hypothesis. Mars side planet collided with proto-Erf. Spin/angular momentum plays a big role in just how this could work. That formed a "synestia": https://is.gd/5svMyP The outer part of that formed the Moon in orbit. It was much much closer. Both bodies were molten. Now, Moon started to cool, and the key is it tide locked quickly. Thus the near side was exposed to the much, much hotter earth than the far side. This caused a thermal gradient from the near to far side, which produced a much thicker crust on the far side. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 05, 2026 06:15 AM (w6EFb) 55

The other theory is two smaller Moons were formed after than initial impact. One was a lot smaller than the other They finally merged together after a while, but it was a more gentle sort of "melding together" type impact. The smaller moon made the far side. That's the other one, but the first one is the most accepted. But there are problems with it. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 05, 2026 06:20 AM (w6EFb) 59

Another big milestone will be when Artemis enters the Moon's Hill Sphere, others dubbed the lunar sphere of influence. This will be the point where the Moon's gravity becomes greater than the Earth's gravity. That is somewhere around 30k miles or so. That will happen this evening some time.

The sphere of influence thing plays a big role in a ballpark orbital mechanics approximation known as patched conics. This allows you to ballpark things like Tli burns and so forth and get estimates of fuel requirements and timing and so forth. It just gets you in the ballpark. For the final calculations you have to the full numerical integrations of the n-body equations.

They gots charts and everything!

>>It just requires 10x the effort.
Listen, I use AI everyday, pretty much all day, in various contexts, it literally is like magic. If you use it correctly. It's not a desert topping AND a floor wax. If you are a seasoned programmer and you know what you are doing, AI should dramatically increase your productivity and output, qualitatively, not just temporally. For instance, if I give it an api spec and say make a zod schema, it will do that in seconds. if I say, give me a dummy json with 1000 entries, with this criteria, seconds, it will supply what you need in seconds. If you say, check this 2000 line jsx for syntax errors, again seconds, or here is this class method, provide a validation function for it. And on and on The problem is people are simply thinking ai can hold the context of 1 million lines of code spread out amongst dozens to 1000s of files and being able to produce reliable results. AI is great for scaffolding the initial code, working on small subsets, and automating, small defined tasks. Not doing it all, at least not yet. The USAAF and Army Aviation had some amazing survival kits and tech gear installed. Really cool gadgets. Fun stuff to train with.
But what they discovered, the idea that a downed crewman was going to escape and evade for 3 months and live off the land, make spears and go fishing just didn’t happen very often. The most useful piece of survival gear is your radio or beacon. Realistically, you’re gonna get captured right away, or picked up by friendlies right away. Usually. All that survival gear is kind of moot. The pen flares are fun, and Doan’s magnesium bar, strobe, etc. Nice little fishing kit, too. Posted by: Common Tater at April 05, 2026 07:11 AM (90Mjm) 91
The Robe is on Movies! Ernest Thesiger, twenty years on from his creepy-hilarious turn as Dr. Pretorius in Bride of Frankenstein, plays the Emperor Tiberius with gravitas and a sense of humor.

The more I watch Richard Burton when he was young and not quite so mannered, the more I realize he would have made an interesting James Bond. If, that is, the first Bond film had been produced in '55 or '56. Imagine Moonraker, following the book, coming out in '56 in color, with someone like Orson Welles as Sir Hugo Drax.
I thought I read somewhere that Fleming himself thought Burton would have made a solid Bond. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 05, 2026 07:27 AM (wzUl9) 106

Looks like the IRCG, bitter enders all, want to wait us out. They are depending on Leftists in the US, muslim immigrants to the US, and the slavishly anti-American media. Sadly, we now have to hit Iran much harder.
We torched 2 C-130s as the price of getting the WSO out. Very expensive. Aircrew must have soaring morale, to see the efforts we took to rescue one of their own. Posted by: NaCly Dog at April 05, 2026 07:33 AM (u82oZ) 114

Posted by: Skip at April 05, 2026 *** And that was much later. Check out his turn in 1953's The Desert Rats w/ James Mason playing Rommel. In one particular scene, as he is being questioned by Rommel, Burton projects some Connery and Daniel Craig mixed, to good effect. If he had done Bond, today we might be quoting "Bond, James Bond" in a Welsh accent instead of Scots. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 05, 2026 07:39 AM (wzUl9) 119

Religious science for a Happy Easter
A scientifically confirmed miracle. “Jesus Cures a Blind Man at Bethsaida” This is not a “living parable” as has been said for centuries. It’s a message across time. From the time of Christ to a time when where we understand eyes enough to know that when sight has been restored (or baby’s new eyes) the brain needs time to understand the 3d world that they are seeing. Jesus calibrates his eyes and this is the most important and misunderstood bible passage in the world. Because Peter’s testimony (on which Mark’s gospel is based) gives us a real scientifically confirmable miracle. 22 And they came to Beth-sa′ida. And some people brought to him a blind man, and begged him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village; and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands upon him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see men; but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him away to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.” Posted by: The Dog at April 05, 2026 02:06 PM (QXLqd) 130
