Iran Claims It Shot Down an F-15 Fighter and Is Searching for the Pilots

Is this true? Well, Iran media has no credibility, except with the corrupt American propaganda media.

Iran shot down what appears to be a fighter plane on Friday, Iranian state media reported, in what would be the first time that Tehran downed an American jet since the war broke out five weeks ago.
The search and rescue is underway for two service members.
The Hill has reached out to the U.S. Central Command, which oversees the U.S. military's actions in the region, for comment.
Iranian state media released photos purportedly showing parts of the plane, indicating it was a U.S. F-15 fighter jet.
Tasnim News Agency, the semiofficial news outlet affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that the U.S. sent out a C-130 Hercules plane and Black Hawk helicopters to look for the crew.

Axios claims "a source familiar with the incident" -- no statement whether the "source" is American or enemy comms from Iran -- confirms the shoot-down.

Their new headline claims the US (or, perhaps, Israel) has successfully "rescued" one of the two pilots and continue searching for the other:

U.S. fighter jet shot down in Iran: One crew member rescued, search for other ongoing

If it's true that we have spec ops in the area and they found one pilot, the chances are good that they will also locate the other, who probably isn't more than a few miles from his partner.

But I don't know if any of this is true. I guess the US is refusing to confirm the reports, but you'd expect the US to refuse comment until the situation is resolved.

This is one of the two disaster scenarios I've been fearing (if true). The other is that an Iranian missile gets very, very lucky and manages to badly damage a $13 billion aircraft carrier, which would immediately reduce US air power and also be a huge propaganda victory encouraging the left-wing (and pseudo-rightwing) anti-American agitators to demand we leave the mullahs to slaughter their citizens and bomb our allies in peace. Because America's enemies are justified in using force to advance their political position, whereas America (and Israel!) of course are never so justified, ever, never ever ever.

On X, a picture of an ejector seat allegedly found by Iran was posted. But people claimed it was a fake and did not look like a bona-fide Air Force ejector seat.

Grok says that "OSINTDefender" is often wrong. "OSINT" means, I presume, "Open Source Intelligence," so, in other words, they're just getting this from the internet, and we know Iran is claiming a shoot-down on the internet.

We're all Open Source Intelligence Officers now, aren't we?

If this is true -- and I don't know that it is -- one thing that may help the missing pilot(s) is the warm regard many, but not all, Iranians have for the US/Israeli action against the Islamic Occupational Army of Iran.

22 Story could be real, but that pic of the seat is 100% fake. No way that's a seat in an F15 that was just shot down. That seat looks like it's been sitting in the desert for 20 years.

Plus, the shadows of the guy taking the pic and the shadows (or lack thereof) of the seat don't line up. Looks photoshopped to me.

I'm not sure the observation that there are no footprints is valid, though. The pilot ejects from the seat long before it hits the ground. There would probably be some disturbance when the seat hit the ground, though.

32 Don't know the current total sortie or mission count, but the "loss rate" for US aircraft in this operation is easily the lowest of any major operation in our history. Four aircraft - 3 from the Kuwait friendly-fire ambush - and possibly the damaged F-35 from earlier, though not a loss. Nobody's ever seen anything like it (in history), to borrow an expression from a NY real estate developer.

The Israeli loss rate, AFAIK 0/X - no losses - is obviously unprecedented and historic (using the terms properly). Amazing.

Every war and situation is different (something I notice that almost everyone has great trouble understanding), but there has never been an air campaign of this scope with this level of losses (almost zero).

I'm quite familiar with our Carrier (and LHD/A - they're the same systems) anti-ship missile defense (ASMD). It was my specialty in the Navy. 1) They don't go anywhere without a screening group against air, surface, and submarine threats, and those are positioned along the likely axes those threats are expected. They would initially engage any threat to the High Value Unit (HVU). In case of "leakers" (missiles that get past the screen),. the Carrier has three layers of defense by itself: radar guided Enhanced Sea Sparrow (ESSM), IR/RF seeking Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM), and radar guided CIWS at 4500 rounds per minute. Those can all be manual controlled, but the Ship's Self Defense System (SSDS) was developed to enable automated doctrine to employ all of those systems. It's pretty robust, and it includes the Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) which allows all ships in the network to fire at a threat even if it doesn't have the track itself.

I'm not going to tell you any numbers for obvious reasons.

114 NaCly I have been wondering since the overhead imagery (from commercial sources) was posted of Prince Sultan AB (both incidents) - why weren't the aircraft dispersed? The Iranians are working with pretty crude systems. The aircraft hit were all parked in normal peace-time fashion, pretty close together. Haven't been to that base but surely it's got enormous ramp space, and likely zero concern over sabotage. Seems you'd disperse unsheltered aircraft.

1) Yeah they have beacons they can activate and also handheld radios to communicate with SAR.

2) Maybe, sometimes? They all attend SERE school so they learn how to Survive and Evade capture, or in the worst case Resist interrogation and attempt to Escape if possible. They will do what they can to aid their own rescue if they aren't injured.

It is a cultural AF thing to not disperse aircraft, I assume to make servicing easier. This goes back to Clark Field in 1941.

We showed in Gulf War 1 that hardened shelters were no defense. There was a Patriot available, don't know about drone defenses.

And we may have a lot of aircraft there, so no real dispersal possible.

Army Chief of Staff is a high ranking staffer, not battlefield commander which indicates the utter stupidity of leftists and military matters beyond transing troops.

Part of what may have gotten him fired was that he axed the prepositioned Merchant Marine supply ships for Marines and Army under Biden. Those ships would be useful for any actual invasions, even small ones rather than waiting on a lengthy sea voyage. See Konrad on X for more of that internal Pentagon dispute.

In a peer war, we are NOT going to have endless supplies of hitech and expensive missile systems to fight with. Even now, Tomahawks and other expensive missiles and/or precision ordnance are running short. Fortunately we can use old dumb bombs or JDAM equipped instead of standoff weapons with Iran now.

Jet Jockeys always are wanting new fighter aircraft or to a lesser extent bombers out there as a budget issue rather than the pedestrian airlift aircraft, tankers, our AF nuclear land missiles, and CAS support.

The A-10s are all around 50 years old, and metal fatigue is a thing. There was a great X thread last weekend mulling the possibility of an A-10X or A-11 (naming is flexible, obviously) that was a new plane with upgrades made possible by 50 years of new technology. But also the same philosophy of being a BRRRRRT delivery system with an armored tub to protect the pilot and redundant systems.

We have a sustained procurement problem in the services that whichever mafia has the biggest share of the general officers dictates what is to be bought which then fits the rest of our strategy around whatever they think is important.

And the fact for the Air Force is that drones and perhaps hypersonic and/or surface to surface missiles are going to be the future rather than the rather expensive and increasingly unnecessary pilots in harms way. The Navy with carrier groups and the Army with tanks are also going to need to revise plans in an era of cheap missiles and drones.
