Top Story

  • houston@nasa.gov, we have a problem. (Tom's Hardware)

The crew of the Artemis II mission - basically retreading the path of Apollo 10, 97 years ago - ran into an issue that didn't happen last time: The spacecraft's computer has two instances of Microsoft Outlook running, and neither one works.

At least that's better than unidentified floating poop (though we may yet come to that) or a Main B Bus Undervolt.

  • Speaking of things not working those new LG-made 1Hz laptop display panels have been put to the test and they don't. Don't not work, that is. They work exceptionally well. (Tom's Hardware)

These displays are designed to automatically lower the refresh rate to as little as 1Hz (from a maximum of 120Hz) when the user is looking at a static screen, since the constant refresh cycle is a major power draw.

Tested in Dell's latest XPS 14 model (which I think is the first laptop shipping with these panels) a battery life test simulating simple web browsing with the screen brightness set to 150 nits saw the laptop lasting 43 hours. That's three times longer than Apple's M5 MacBook Air running with the same settings.

Apple's CPUs are more power-efficient than Intel's so heaver workloads handed the win to the Air, but the new display panel certainly proved itself.

Audio of the floating turd incident with Apollo 10:

https://is.gd/qRAIgA

That is comedy gold right there. I always forget there were actually two floating turds. They noticed one, then a while later, another one popped up. Cernan said....well I won't spoil it. It's comedy gold.

The Apollo solid waste collection system consisted of a plastic bag you taped to your butt.

And yes, there were some diarrhea incidents with the Apollo missions as well. And it went just about like you might expect. They didn't talk about that too much at the time, but it happened. And yes, it went everywhere.

Going well. AppleOS is not MS Win or Linux Mint, which is what I'm used too. So it's a matter of just finding where things are and what they are called as Apple names stuff differently. First world problems, nothing major. The machine its self is new, so it runs like a new Ferrari. Its very lightweight too, also a plus. Its my shiny new toy.

31 How Microsoft vaporized a trillion dollars is an excellent read. I don't understand the technical side.

But at heart it is a people problem.

The leadership of Microsoft chose poorly for a long time. The person who could have fixed many problems notified his superiors, and was eventually fired.

Absolutely, if you’re old enough, or have worked basically anywhere, you’ve watched company decisions go south from ignoring the actual problem. I could give at least 3 dozen examples, but you don’t need my old stories. NYC is one of the greatest topical lessons about to be learned in the history of ignoring problems.

41 A blessed Good Friday to those that observe it!. I found a prayer for Holy Week in my wonderful Harper Collins Book of prayers through the ages, compiled by Robert Van de Weyer: It is by Bernard of Clairvaux who lived from 1090 until 1133. He was the main inspiration for the Cistercian order of monks: and wrote prayers for major Christian festivals which were widely disseminated.

You taught us, Lord, that the greatest love a man can show is to lay down his life for his friends. But your love was greater still, because you laid down your life for your enemies. It was while we were still enemies that you reconciled us to yourself by your death. What other love has ever been , or ever could be , like yours? You died at the hand of sinners for the sake of the sinful. You became a slave to tyrants, to set the oppressed free.

No, she's not a lefty, thank God. She doesn't know the woman, but somehow the talk title caught her attention. She looks at it as a break in the monotony -- remember, she doesn't work and hardly ever has. And it's a free luncheon as well.

I agreed to this because she originally wanted to go to a $75/person buffet at a downtown restaurant. When I said no, she brought this up, knowing no doubt I'd feel I should give way somewhere. Again, it's free, and will be only about an hour long, so I'll grit my teeth.

I got really good at keeping an impassive Spock-face during Zoom meetings at my last job there, when (for instance) they discussed who was going to give the "land acknowledgment" at an upcoming conference we were sponsoring, and yammered on about "efforts toward increasing diversity." On the one hand, Apple sucks.
On the other hand, so does pretty much every other tech company.
On the gripping hand, wife decided she wanted to go with Apple years ago and we're unlikely to change at this point.

What one doesn't see these days are the street corner workers hawking newspapers and that is an outstanding example of how irrelevant the printed press has become.

110 IIRC, Pixy mentioned that the Pixel10a is just a 9a with some slight changes.

LOL. I have a 9a, but Google is offering the 10a for $249, down the their original offer of $499.

114 Making a couple of french loaves today after letting the poolish ferment overnight. Added in a bit of einkorn flour and I hope it does not fuck thinks up. One more bit of dough handling to strengthen gluten and it'll be a rest then loaf formation in my $1.39 Dollar Tree plastic oval bins. I bake them in a pair of 2 1/2" deep Walmart roasting pans I clamshell so there's some steam inside.

119 Back from my workout, showered, and about to start breakfast. Demetrius and the Gladiators, the sequel to The Robe, is on Movies!, but I doubt I'll watch all of it. It's time to change the furry thugs' litter box, and I need to run over to the store for some more of that Feline Pine litter. My personal jury is still out on whether it works well enough to be worth the initial cost, $12 vs. $7 for the clay stuff.
