Grandmother Wrongfully Jailed for Nearly Six Months After AI Facial Recognition Error

On July 14 of last year, Angela Lipps was at her Tennessee home babysitting four children when armed police officers came and took her away at gunpoint. She was later booked as a fugitive in relation to a bank fraud investigation in North Dakota, over 1,000 miles away. The only problem was that Lipps had never been to North Dakota.
The grandmother of five told investigators that she had lived most of her life in north-central Tennessee and had never even been on a plane. Unfortunately, police in Fargo, North Dakota, had obtained a signed warrant for her arrest on multiple charges, including felony theft and felony unauthorised use of personal identifying information.
Angela Lipps later learned that she had been identified as a suspect in an organised bank fraud case. Investigators reviewing cases in April and May 2025, in which a woman used a fake US Army military ID to withdraw tens of thousands of dollars from banks, used facial recognition software on surveillance camera footage and identified the Tennessee grandmother as the main suspect.

After spending over three months in a Tennessee jail, at the end of October 2025, Angela Lipps was put on a plane and flown to North Dakota, where she was once again jailed simply because an AI recognition software decided her facial features, body type and hairstyle matched those of a crime suspect.

In its early days, Twitter alternative Bluesky tried to paint itself as a safe haven from the onslaught of AI, promising in November 2024 that it had “no intention” of scraping user-generated posts to train AI models.
It was a shot across the bow, clearly aimed at its rival X-formerly-Twitter, which had recently changed its terms of service to allow just that. And since then, backlash to AI slop and relentless AI integrations has grown to new heights.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Bluesky’s abrupt foray into AI isn’t sitting well with its notoriously anti-AI user base.

The CEO seemed well aware of the headwinds against launching consumer-facing AI products in 2026.

Graber appeared to be aware of the inflood of hatred for the idea. When a user told her that “we don’t want it,” she replied with a curt: “then don’t use it — it’s a separate app.”
Graber also reshared a post by a different user who claimed people “on the left” were being “shortsighted” by being willfully blind about AI, and that the argument “‘hope it goes away’ doesn’t have a great track record as a strategy for contesting control of new political domains and technologies.” The implication: Bluesky users are wrong about their resentment over AI and should instead embrace it.

Ancient Roman board game stumped experts for decades – until AI played

A slab of limestone excavated in 1984 from the ancient Coriovallum settlement in the Netherlands presented a puzzle for researchers of Roman history. Because of its distinct grooves and marks, the stone piece was believed to be some kind of board game – but obviously no rulebook was dug up to confirm this. Now, more than 40 years on, new technology appears to have solved the mystery.
An international team of researchers led by Maastricht University in the Netherlands, along with Leiden University, Australia's Flinders University, the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and The Roman Museum and restoration studio Restaura in Heerlen, have used 3D scans and AI to unravel the rules of this mysterious game that no human has been able to figure out.
The oval-shaped stone, roughly 8.3 x 5.7 inches (21 x 14.5 cm) in diameter and marked on one side with distinct intersecting lines, had all the hallmarks of a game played in ancient times. As the researchers note in their paper, people around the world have played games since at least the Bronze Age (around 3000 BCE). A lot haven't survived due to materials used, but the Coriovallum limestone had withstood the test of time.

They programmed two AI bots to play a digital version of the limestone-etched board, with more than 100 different sets of rules from other games throughout history we know of. The AI players had 1,000 goes at each of these other games, and then a pattern emerged. Nine "rules" the other games had were consistent with this mysterious one.

Using AI to come up with new rules to a game might actually be fun. Got any ideas??

I lost a frozen orange juice concentrate can that rolled under the front passenger's seat. For just shy of a week and in the summer, it was. And the can broke open.

To say that the car stunk was an understatement. To say that the stink lasted a long time was another understatement.

She was saying his speech last night was a lie, that we were getting bogged down in Iran and would be there for months or years. That his poll numbers are so low the White House is panicking. 64 On the board game... why do I suspect the AI guys don't even realize they didn't 'discover the rules', they did the equivalent of shaking up a box of 'According to Hoyle' rules and having an unpaid intern blindly test each one to see if it was even remotely applicable? And then noone checked the intern's work to see if he put something in the 'keep' pile that didn't work, or put something in the 'discard' pile that was a really good keeper?

My wife and I were driving to a pot luck in our new minivan. She had a crockpot full of baked beans on the floor between her feet. For whatever reason, she lost control of it, and the beans and bean juice soaked into the carpet. The smell never truly left that vehicle.

I had a lot of energy when expecting #2 during the elder son's naptime. I sewed winter jumpers for myself! I sewed Sesame St. puppets for his birthday! I made Polish pisanki eggs with a kit (that I still have after going cross country twice and suffering in a hot FL attic). I may make them again someday and order a kit. I wish I had that energy now.

This year our son, DIL and grands are going on a cruise, flying to Puerto Rico tomorrow. Favorite BIL and SIL are busy with her family. And we don't feel like dealing with the agnostic in-laws.

We are going to Mass and then a very fancy brunch at a French place we haven't been to in decades. Very lovely but rumored to be too costly for the food. We'll take our chances and the grounds will be beautiful at the base of a canyon.

We may have an egg hunt after Easter or on the 4th of July at this rate. I use fake eggs because after the first hunt grandson throws them from his jeep (or did, while wearing a lady's fascinator hat after I made a bunch for a tea shower). I have insane grandchildren.

103 The first "lost egg" was actually hidden in plain sight. It was tucked into the side of a small xylophone which hung on the living room wall. Pale yellow, which matched the wooden box very well. Mom saw it *months* later.

The other one was tucked into the underside of antique dining room table-- it had pull-out leaves at either end and there was just enough space to hold an egg. The younger kids were still very little and curious about that table, so Mom figured they'd find it. Well... she forgot about it! There's a course near Annapolis MD called "Renditions". All of the holes are patterned after select holes from well known courses. They have replicas of the 3 "Amen Corner" holes from Augusta. I have a photo of me sitting on the stone bridge that looks just like the one above. It really does look like I'm at Augusta!

She was saying his speech last night was a lie, that we were getting bogged down in Iran and would be there for months or years. That his poll numbers are so low the White House is panicking. 133 I cannot eat hardboiled eggs unless they are made fresh and warm. I just can't. I don't care how fancy they are. Whereas I betcha my SIL's would eat them after a week in the hot sun. Their mother made them immune to food poisoning with leftovers.

I have never been the same since a huge egg hunt at a park near my grandmother's. One of my cousins, a few years younger than me, ate all of the eggs she found (I think probably with some shells). I was grossed out as she had stuff all over her toddler face.

This was also the egg hunt where a girl I did not know loved a baby chick so much she accidently (I think) killed it.

Very traumatic all in all for me. I was about 6yrs old.

My in-laws family conducts "egg wars" with hard boiled and dyed eyes for Easter.

Each person chooses an egg and decides how to hold it in their hand(s). Folks then pair off.

One person uses their egg as a the striker and usually holds the egg with the pointy end down to strike. The other's egg is struck and usually that egg is held with the pointy side up. One strike is allowed and whichever egg's shell cracks, that person is out of the contest. (In the event of no crack, striking is repeated until one of the eggs' shell cracks.)

It's a single elimination competition, and eventually one person's egg comes through the fray unscathed, thus making them the egg wars' champion. The winning egg typically endures through four (or sometimes five) bouts of striking.

I'm sure the performers appreciated that raucous response in the second half, because they kept gesturing to the crowd to bring up the volume even more.

Easter Mass at Maria Lanakila in Lahaina was a treat. The school kids did an Easter hula and there were flowers everywhere.

I'm not certain what chemicals are used in that process, though, and whether any egg so treated would be free of hazardous or distasteful residues on its shell.

No, mine was regular sheet. I think it was actually congoleum, which is a bit heavier I think. It was the original floor done in 1982. It was some thick shit . But yeah they did seem to make that pattern for awhile because when I was doing kitchens I saw it a lot in the early 80's. For all I know they still make it.

A lot of people did that. I know, I was the poor bastard that ended up putting down the new sub floor before we installed the new kitchen. The nightmare scenario back then was when the customer said they wanted to keep the floor they had. The problem is the industry changes every so often, and the toe kicks on really old kitchens weren't as deep, and the industry changed and started making base cabinets with a 1" deeper toe kick so you had more room for your feet. Well, now you have a 1 inch gap where the old floor don't meet the new deeper toe kicks.

I almost did ceramic in this kitchen, but with the larger tiles. I put ceramic in the last house, and mrs B said no more frigging grout to clean, so I did that luxury vinyl plank. I used the SPC (stone plastic core) type with the rubber backing, no wood core, not in a kitchen where water is involved. Best move I ever did in a kitchen. They really don't use ceramic much anymore in a kitchen. The vinyl plank can be laid down over anything.

Yeah you're not doing large tiles with a slope towards a drain. The vinyl plank is great for kitchens and regular flat floors. I used it in the one half bath and its great. I'm most likely going to use ceramic on top of hardy backer in the other 2 full baths for max water protection. Don't skimp on the vinyl plank floor, get the good shit. The $5-6 a sq ft stuff from one of the good companies, not the $1 sq ft crap. You want SPC. You can drop it in water, come back 20 years later and its still good. The wear layer is way thicker too.

I use McCormick liquid food coloring. Still uses hot water and a teaspoon of vinegar, but you can regulated the intensity of the color by the number of drops used. Also, many other colors can be made by mixing the basic colors by certain volumes. Much better than those Paz tablets. Been using the liquid dyes since the 70's.

I'm impressed. Back in the 2000s, Lunar Laser Ranging could determine the position of the Moon's center of mass relative to earth at about 2 cm, that's centimeters of precision. The Moon was shown to be within 2cm of where General Relativity says it should be (Mr. Newton alone would be about 10s of meters off over time -- not much, but still no cigar).

Well, as of now, they've got that down to 1mm basically. The Moon is within 1 mm of where Mr. Einstein's gravity says it should be.

Traditional terrazzo typically has the usual concrete floor, a two inch sand cushion, and two inches of white Portland cement terrazzo. So your structural floor has to be about four inches low.

Epoxy terrazzo typically can be as little as a quarter inch thick placed directly on the concrete floor... can be used in a remodel job w/o messing too much with floor elevations.

Both systems have similar grinding and polishing.

Had projects where they demo'd to the bone, and filled the old terrazzo floor with concrete and then went with a very nice epoxy terrazzo on top.

324 I never colored eggs with my Mom and my brothers, she was into a more religious celebration of Easter, didn't ascribe to the eggs and baskets and bunny theory. I always had to wear a nice dress though, with ankle socks and black patent leather shoes, plus an ill-fitting new hat that was affixed to my head with a most uncomfortable elastic strap under my chin. I did the exact opposite with my kids, lots of candy, toys and casual dress if we could get away with it. We flew those little balsa planes all over the place for hours, I had several extras for parts.

Yeah they last. My friend was a floor refinish guy, so I called him him to refinish them, because the chucklehead I got the house from had wall to wall yellow shag rug (gag) which I literally tore out on day 1. Floors weren't bad because it had rug over them for years, but they were stained in a few spots from shampooing. He did a beautiful job, they lasted 30 years, During this last move I had him come in again and redo them when I listed the house. Poor guy, he was 35 when he did them the first time, and he was 65 when he did them the second time.

I have a chevy colorado. Thats not a truck, thats a skateboard with a cookie tin hanging off the back. It won't fit. The bike is 7feet long, the bed is 6. I could do it if I lower the tailgate, put the bike in on an angle, and have the rear tire on the gate, and thats probably not a good idea for a 650lb bike. the dude was going to deliver it. I wish I had a truck. Its a nice little truck. Drives and rides like a car. It has a 1550 pound weight capacity. It must be a uranium hauler, because your not fitting anything weighing 1550 pounds in that thing, lol. Actually I stand corrected. When I got the plank flooring for the kitchen. It was 70lbs per box, and I had 600sq ft of flooring, so I think it was 35-36 boxes. We put some in mrs B's RDX, and I put the rest in the colorado. It handled it no problem. The harley would be no problem if it fit.

I hate the 6' bed. Old Ford truck has 8' bed, but slurps so much gas and has a tendency to fk up when I need it *not to* the most. Time to sell it off to someone what wants an oldie and has the time to fiddle with it. I don't enjoy doing tune-ups on that old beast.

I was perfectly content with the un-blown 6.2 liter Diesel in my long-gone '85 Suburban. And the un-blown 4-banger Diesel in my old International tractor does just fine, too. And I bet that new engine for the Humlite needs DEF, too.

Even if you don't care for the efficiency gains that a turbo will supply, do it for the poor bastard behind your vehicle. The particulate output difference between non- and turbo'd diesels is night and day... the night part being produced by the black cloud emanating from the tailpipe.

I differ about blowers. Take the same engine one blown and one not and there is a world of difference. I've worked them both.
I had 6.2s with no complaints. However, with the exception that the engine wasn't built to handle it, a blower would have been simply marvelous.

Shit, was out in the garage. Usually they are pretty much what is used on kitchen cabinet handles. They are usually 8-32. Size 8 machine screw, 32 threads per inch.
