A Myriad Marbles Open Thread

I'll just be posting open threads today unless something big happens. (If cobloggers really want to post something, let me know. We're wide open.)

Hope you're enjoying your post-Easter Monday.

Do you think that's dorky?

Looks like "billionaires" (of which there are about a 1000 in the US) are the new, or at least most prominent, hate objects to the Left right now. Not that I have much liking of them, but the talk I see from DemSocs (a.k.a. Commies) is positively bloodthirsty.

13 The Obama Library (aka "The Flak Tower") is about to open, and they've released their admission prices.

Thirty bucks, with four bucks off if you are an Illinois resident.

Naturally, if you claim to be an Illinois resident, you have to show ID to prove it.

For some reason, the Obama Library doesn't care about the millions of people who can't get ID, and would be unable to vote if ID was required.

Got there at 7:00 for the 8:30 Mass, which went on until after 11. Picked up a nail in my tire on the way and limped home. Got to bed at 12:30 and woke up at 3:30, unable to get back to sleep. Drove Her Majesty's car to the show to get there at 7:00 and had a full day's work. Came home, took care of the girls and flopped into bed for a couple of hours.

Found a place up in Rogers AR with many brands, and they actually sit you down and measure your feet with a Brannock device. When your feet are getting old, wide and gnarly it's tough finding shoes. They also do arch support fitting if you need it. Figure I'll blow off $600 or so for two or three pairs good shoes and a pair of slippers.

Yep. Not going to replace my special-occasion shoes, but getting checked (and definitely with the Brannock tool) for walking shoes is truly worthwhile. After that, ordering working boots (~20 years old) for cold weather and sandals (~15 years old) from a reputable Maine outfitter which has always done right by me is a piece of cake.

You know how so many leftist protests are simply paid for? The protestors are paid agitators paid for by a business, right?

Why doesn't the government regulate this as a commercial activity?

Now the gub'mint can't make these people protest for/against anything in particular right but how about simple regulations that identify them as being employees of a business? If you work at a call center you're required to announce that a call is monitored and recorded, why not a requirement that these paid agitators announce they are indeed paid agitators? Force them to say or wear whatever necessary. Here, a t-shirt that's identifies the org you work for, a high visibility vest with same and a hoodie with big pink bunny ears.

The recent Popes are both pretty good dudes who say really insightful, Christ-centered things, but churches aren't doing the same things. If you like a Catholic mass but want to see the church living out the actual teachings of Jesus, Episcopal churches are great!

The metric system is great for science and engineering where everything needs to be scalable and repeatable.

The other units we use are wildly better for just measuring things humans need to know on a daily basis to make our lives easier.

Fahrenheit: 0 is fucking cold, 100 is fucking hot.
Celsius: 0 is pretty chilly, 100 you have been boiled alive.

I’m keen to point out that Canada could be going to the moon with their own rocketry but they long ago decided that babying their people into perpetual adolescence was a better use of their money and time. This is why the United States is moving forward and Canada is committed to going nowhere.

I would do anything for that fact to be rubbed in that Canadian Forces colonel’s face throughout the Artemis’s journey.

330 311 Roberta Williams co-founded Sierra Online (with her husband) - there were a fair number of women in the early history of video games...

Amusingly she got in some hot water, literally, because she posed in a hot tub in the cover art for an early Leisure Suit Larry type game

345 100%. Some of the footage I've seen looks like it's from 1969 tech. NASA is really missing out on PR. The images we see from the vehicle, inside and out, should be absolutely stunning. It's not like we're not capable.

SpaceX is so good at the video now that it's easy to forget how bad NASA always has been at it.
Posted by: Ian S. at April 06, 2026 12:50 PM (2ocoG)

All their really stupid, preventable problems plus their shitty video presentation of a historic event has made me believe they've just slapped things together in a hurry to try to convince the public that NASA still matters. They've shown us why they really don't.

If my life was that easy. Even after decades I'm still amazed how many frigging tools are on the lift when working on a harley. Its insane, as if somebody dumped a tool box. Allen sockets, long allen sockets, long ball allen sockets, a rail of 1/4 and 3/8 drive sockets, socket extensions, wobble extensions, assorted pliers, snap ring pliers, multiple wrenches, ratchet wrenches, impact gun, large 1/2 drive sockets, multiple screw drivers, etc. That don't include the specialty tools. Its crazy

It's the whole "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one" riff from Star Treks II through IV. Spock led with that version, and Kirk inverted it when he threw away his career to resurrect Spock.

And as a lot of people have pointed out, recruiting gets a lot easier and the troops will fight harder when they know the Pentagon will move heaven and earth to rescue you if something goes sideways.

Space on board the lunar lander was at a premium, and the camera used a vidicon tube with the associated electronics, and a very narrow bandwidth. It was pretty much an afterthought. I was in the Army Signal Corp at the time assigned to the TV Division, and was recording the landing on an Ampex VR1000 monochrome 2" quad VTR and an Ampex VR1000 all tube 2" quad VTR. All of us were amazed that we were receiving a video signal from the moon! History in the making. I was 22 years old.
