I'm home recovering from my exposure to Western paternalism and imperialism toward Korean orphans, as "explained" by an anti-American professor. There was a free lunch -- shrimp or chicken po-boys, plus french fries; and she was surprisingly attractive. I mean, I was expecting some middle-aged battleaxe with close-cropped silver hair; but she was youngish, slim, and well-spoken, with long black hair and wearing a nice black dress and high heels (!).

But if you like offbeat noirs, like Pychon's Crying of Lot 49 or the one with Joachim Phoenix about the pothead detective in California, you may like it. It's basically just a pastiche of Pynchon. There are parts of the book that I strongly feel are not meant to be read, just looked at, scanned to evoke a feeling, like "wow, that's a lot of stuff right there boy howdy". But not to read. Random text just thrown up. I think I read it all quickly, about 2-3 days and did spend time looking through the weird stuff. But I don't think it added anything. You'll know when you get to those areas.

But the good part is this: You know in every detective story, where the detective is working on one case and then another and it turns out the two cases are related? Kiss Kiss Bang Bang calls this trope out explicitly.
Anyway in Inherent Vice, the detective, Joachim Phoenix, is high out of his mind. So he's paranoid. And he receives a new potential client, and starts taking notes about the case. And as the potential client tells his story, it dawns on Phoenix that this case is directly linked to the one he's already on.
And this is the funny part: Because he's high, he starts freaking out with paranoia (justified, I'd say) but also trying to hide it because he's high AF.
This is in many ways the story of JackStraw, the AOSHQ's own White Rabbit.

On top of that, I was extremely surprised at the drive over and back. This is a commute I took for years and years, trying to find a series of roads that were smooth and pleasant to drive on. The city -- who recently repaired a major water line break on the main avenue in that area -- has not only repaired it so you'd never know, they've actually paved it properly. The car was looking over its shoulder at me, saying, "Boss, this is how roads are supposed to be!"
Plus we timed it just right to use the HOV lanes in each direction. Winning!

I'm a fan of "Under the Silver Lake", but yeah it's tough to recommend because the viewer just has to go along with it or bail.
So yeah, very Pynchonesque.
The ending is what really makes it work. Brilliant writing. Most writers couldn't do that. It also gives the story weight that you wouldn't expect.
The surprising thing was that the lovely and circumspect Mrs naturalfake liked it as well. Didn't love it, but liked it.
The same writer director of "It Follows" wrote and directed "Under the Silver Lake" also is doing the End of Oak Street, so I have high hopes.

At a press conference they got to going on about "non propulsive venting". When they dump stuff (water, pee, CO2) they try to do it in a balanced way so as not to give the spacecraft any kicks. They can't get it exact, but they're impressed with just how non-propulsive they're doing.

My wife was a Korean orphanage adoptee. She is very happy to have come to the US even with the problems she had, both there and here. I know a number of her "sisters" as well, and some are delightful and others sort of OK, but they all know what they have here as opposed to what they had there. She goes and visits one of the orphanages in S Korea still.

I got interested in that. Rather than disposable cannisters, Orion has some regenerative system. Online scrubbers absorb, then it when it gets full, they rotate and vent. It surprised me they said this is the biggest source of possible unintentional propulsive venting to worry about, more than the pee dumps and such.

If I'd been adopted by a wealthy family who loved me and gave me all the advantages their own biological children would have had? You would not see me trashing them and running down this society, or yearning to adopt the "culture" of my birth mother. My adopted parents would be "my parents," full stop. Oh, I might be curious and want to find out a few things about the original 'rents, but I wouldn't toss aside the people who raised me.

We will get the information after this punitive expedition is over, but I wonder if the F-15 and A-10 were shot-down in the same general area? Obviously, the Iranians got a pop-up SAM system, or two, operational.
But, after over 10,000 sorties with over-whelming air superiority, I wouldn't doubt that the flight crews began to get complacent. I suspect that we're busy bombing anything that even looks like a SAM system right now.

I remember talking about how bad it was for me taking care of of my Quadriplegic Father until my friend talked about stealing food to feed her brother in a South Korean orphanage, reminding me that things could be worse

I loved that show. Fi was not beautiful by conventional standards but she was striking and had a banging body. She frequently did that thing that small busted women often 0do which is wear tight tops with no brassiere. She was also a fun character who liked to shoot people and blow things up; she didn't have Michael's patience to play the long game.
