It's hard to believe, but the Artemis crew are seeing features on the far side never seen by human eyes before. Mare Orientale overhead in sunlight is one of those. The timing of the Apollo missions was such that it was lunar morning on the chosen landing site. This was for thermal reasons as well as lighting. They wanted a low sun angle when landing the LM, which helped see the surface relief better than high sun angle. Thus Mare Orientale was in the dark when the CSM flew over. That “Honest 2 Betsy” YouTuber’s whole schtick is to find double entendre song from the past and then be a proper and prim listener who is shocked, shocked! to what might be implied by the lyrics. Songs like this from that era usually have an “out,” just as this one does. Just proves whose mind is in the gutter, or does it? This goes way back. People were people even in great grandpa’s time.

Speaking of inspiring words, there's something they calle the Overlook Effect that happens to most, but not all astronauts when they first get into space. It's a transcendent, spirtual kind of experience. It happens in LEO, but for the now 28 people who have seen the "Blue Marble" view, where they're far enough away to see the Earth as a small blue globe in their field of view, the experience is something else. Here's Victor Glover the other day, who had that Overlook Effect hit him like a freight train: https://is.gd/oCACOu "Oasis in nothingness". I've been using the Feline Pine litter material Joyenz recommended on the Pet Thread a while back. $12 at Walmart for 40 lbs. After filling the clean box to a depth of about an inch, I was able to fit the rest into a 30-lb. Petco litter bucket. Which suggests that I can get three more 10-lb. refills out of this bag -- maybe a month total? Seems to me I changed the box more often than that with the clay stuff.

Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at April 06, 2026 *** As other commenters here who've used it said, the urine sort of turns the little pine pellets into sawdust. You shake the box and that tends to settle toward the bottom of the pan. Solids you scoop out. Eventually the smell becomes a bit much, and you simply dump the whole thing in the trash. It seems to weigh less than the equivalent amount of the clay, and cleaning the box up is easier. I do plan to get the cats a stainless steel pan for even easier cleanup. Some very cool descriptions. Artemis is now in the dark, the Sun is now blocked by the Moon from their POV. I'll admit it took me a bit tog the geometry visualized in my mind's eye. Anyway, earthset and rise occurred before the sun disappeared. After earthrise, the Moon was between the earth and sun. They are far enough away from the Moon to allow this easily. Anyway, their describing the sun's corona, still visible. Also, on the other side, they say the earthshine is quite bright on the surface of the Moon. Man, I'm really looking forward for the high resolution pics we'll get when they get back home. After they've processed the alien bases out of the far side pictures, of course. Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at April 06, 2026 *** Cheaper cars had fabric seats. My '75 Maverick had a sort of foamy fabric on the seat facings, with vinyl on the sides. My '84 For Escort had dark gray plaid fabric framed by thin vinyl; hard to think much cheaper than that, or that car. My father's '66 Impala Super Sport coupe had vinyl, in wide beige and gold stripes. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 06, 2026 08:43 PM (wzUl9) 211

My '86 Mercedes had the real stuff, I think -- that was in the days when they built the cars the best they could, then priced them, instead of building to a price. My '97 MB 230 had their MBTex, which is a kind of hard-wearing vinyl used in Euro taxicabs and in certain of their sedans then (and maybe still is?). It looks like leather and lasts even longer. Vintage cars and trucks had a long, circuitous wiring route, from the battery, switch, firewall and dash, down to the bright switch on the floor, out to the lights. Numerous grounds and connections, which quickly became corroded. High resistance.
Headlights don’t (or didn’t) use fuses, for safety reasons. Breakers, incorporated in the switch. All that corrosion raised the resistance and the switch gets hot. SO, “back in the day” you might find yourself driving at night on a long trip - and your headlights go out! Not fun. Headlight relays obviated this problem and keep the drama away. Good clean tight grounds and connections are important in the old school cars and trucks. Careful planning went into that. They wanted it to early morning at the landing site for several reasons. One was thermal control. They wanted the surface just warming up after the 2-week long night. Second, they wanted a low sun angle during landing to cast long shadows to see surface relief. Also, with the rovers, a low sun made for a nice navigation reference. It didn't move much over the course of their say, and if it all else failed, they could reckon position from the sun. That's a real shame. Sorry to hear it. I know I have a good one when I take it into the German auto repair shop for oil changes, and he offers to buy it. Posted by: Diogenes at April 06, 2026 09:52 PM (2WIwB) 379
My cat has a new hobby. During the night, he tromps on my chest at random times. He's not losing any weight, I tell you what.

Because of lunar libration, we see, over the long term, about 59% of the surface. There's libration in longitude and latitude and they have different periods. It takes about 6 years, and maybe as much as 18 yr (nodal precession cycle) to see all of that 59%. Over the course of any few successive months, you'll come close to the 59% but not the full monty. Those old round headlights never got fogged unless they went bad and then you could buy another for a few bucks. That's what progress has brought us. Foggy headlights.
Posted by: fd at April 06, 2026 09:34 PM (vFG9F) Modern headlight are one metric fuckton brighter though. Better field of light as well. Sure, it looks like everyone's brights are on... Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at April 06, 2026 09:39 PM (zZu0s) Yup, new lights are super bright. Harley always used the regular sealed beam headlights you found on cars, and eventually they switched to lights that use the H-4 halogen bulbs which you can change to even brighter ones, or switch them to an LED bulb. They are the same size as the regular sealed beam headlight so you can retro fit older bikes without changing the entire housing. Just pop out the sealed beam and put the new unit in. Because of that they fit the old classic muscle car. I'm soooo looking to do that, because those old sealed beams are absolutely frigging useless on that car. For $30 each I solve a huge problem. Wolfus,

Posted by: Diogenes at April 06, 2026 *** I'd bought two oil filters on FCPEuro and the proper oil at Walmart, all ready to go for the BMW's first oil change on my watch. The Buick didn't take that grade of oil. I traded the BMW stuff to my mechanic for my first change on the LaCrosse, so it all worked out. Publius, how much navigation can be manually performed by the Orion crew? The Apollo missions could get aligned with a sextant and stars and the rest of it, in a pinch. They wanted to be able to get home again one way or another. Independent of Mission Control, if radio comms were lost, or the Soviets jammed frequencies, or the computer horked.

And since SUVs ride higher, even the low beams go right into your eyes.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 06, 2026 09:44 PM (wzUl9) I have two newer small SUVs with the super bright LEDs. The low beams are very precise, if a bit wide. With no other cars on the road they do not even light up mail boxes, the posts but not high enough to light up the boxes. That said, there are a LOT of MFers that run all their lights all the time. You can because if they are behind you there are harsh shadows and signs higher than mail boxes are lit up. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at April 06, 2026 09:58 PM (/lPRQ) 393
Diogenes, I will say I miss the BMW from time to time. It needed premium gas, as you know, but I got 27 mpg on a regular basis with city driving. And the car accelerated and took curves like nothing else I'd ever driven -- living up to the BMW reputation for sure.
