Blowin' Up Stuff Real Good Open Thread

This guy is funny. He's a good shot, so he must know about gun safety. But his familiarity breeds contempt. For example, can you spot which weapon-handling mistakes he's making in this video?

I've cued up these videos to the most explosive parts, but there's a lot of good stuff throughout them.

Hunting oxygen tanks.

Shooting an oxygen tank inside a car.

Firing all four barrels of a four barrel shotgun at a watermelon at inadvisably close range.

In one of the dumbest "tests" he does, he puts a grenade in an oven and then blasts it with a flamethrower for a minute (from a yard away, mind you) to see what happens. I don't know if this is real. There's a cut between the grilling of the grenade and the actual detonation.

Shooting a crossbow bolt through spray propellant cans.

A .50 cal Barrett versus propane and oxygen and acetylene tanks. Stay with this one until he takes the second shot, and then skip ahead to him shooting the other tanks. He takes another big second shot here, too.

Shooting a whole bunch of propane and oxygen tanks with an M60.

Can you blow up oxygen and propane tanks inside a van you've rigged to drive in a circle by shooting it with a .50 cal machine gun? I should warn you this one's a damp squib but it's fun watching the van get shot to pieces.

In this one, he shoots at a Pepsi vending machine with ever-larger calibers. He only does real damage with the Barret and I think the .408. I've cued it up to the part after that, when he decides to just put a grenade in it.

That is the geocentric speed, their speed relative to the center of the Erf. It is indeed poking. It's selenocentric (or cythnionocentric) speed will be much higher, but they aren't reporting that.

My hat is off to the boys at JPL managing the DSN. THis is the first time the DSN has supported a manned mission since Apollo.

Artemis gets priority above all for bandwidth, but we've got a shit ton of other spacecraft, such as Mars orbiters and rovers, Jupiter probes, and a bunch of others. The JPL boys are juggling all that. The live feed from Artemis is impressive in that context.

They did do a course correction burn yesterday late, just a smidge. After TLI, there was only .08% error in trajectory, and they were able to skip two of the planned course correction burns.

I don't know if the toilet is completely down or not. The trouble is the waste water venting system now. The damn thing has been tending to freeze up and vents slow. Crapper's full problem.

They had Christina at one time giving detailed reports of the venting clouds she was seeing. They tried to turn the capsule so the vent was facing the sun to help de-ice it. That did increase the flow rate a little, but it's still too slow.

Reddit was a terrible venue, in part because The Deathworlders got so much fanfic that it took other pages to keep track of the complete list, then which ones were canon, and then the chronological reading order. And none of that kept track of which ones you'd already read, aside from your open tabs or the color of the hyperlink. 158 The Moon is famously unphotogenic. Everything bad about photography is heightened when it's photographed. The newer photo post processing tools can make it a bit more interesting but forget it when it comes down to processing a real-time signal.

It's not very appealing to the naked eye either.

What tends to really pop-out are photos of when the terminator is near when there is some contrast generated by the shadows and the incidence angle doesn't washing else out.

Put the astronaut and toilet on one end of a ridgid swing and have a suitable counterweight on a ridgid rod attached to the swing pointed in the opposite direction. Once the astronaut is comfortably seated, start spinning up the apparatus until sufficient “artificial gravity” has built up, and use the toilet as normal. Then when finished deaccelerate the apparatus until you have brought it to a stop. Do NOT stand up while the swing toilet is in motion or the Coriolis forces will probably make you spew from both ends. Since spinning up and spinning down the swing toilet will apply torques to the spacecraft, it might be optimal to pair counterrotating swing toilets that rotate simultaneously in opposite directions, even if two astronauts don’t need to go at the same time. Bonus: two seats, no waiting!

The only people worth watching and following these days are ones whose income is completely independent of social media. If they do get revenue, the source has to be clear. I like watching some of the China channels because their schtick is just to tell you stuff, when when they rattle the cup, they are up front about it, and lay out how their money is earned. I can respect that.

I'm sick to death of "principled conservatives" who will reverse themselves on key issues multiple times in obvious plays for enagement.

As stated above I can appreciate his social/political commentary. It's at least semi-consistent whether I agree with it or not. He was a "Mano Sphere" guy kinda before all that really started and hit the MAGA train hard when it was leaving the station. But his Mano-Manliness ended with COVID, he went mask Nazi and COVID shot crazy....then kind of just pretends it never happened and went back to the Maniless ManoStuff.

I find the history of these types/groups more interesting (mostly) than the actual commentary.

But he pulled the pin first, then struggled to stuff the grenade in the launcher while trying to avoid dropping the boom baseball. Bad juju. You stuff the grenade in first, just enough to hold the spoon, THEN pull the pin and launch.
