I normally don't comment on the Quotes of The Day. Between this Miller guy and his gutless, spineless, testicle free boss Roger Goodell I can't stand the NFL and it can't go broke fast enough. I grew up close to Green Bay and have always been a Packers fan.

But since 2020 I've given up on the league. The kneelers, the "Hands up" bullshit, politics entered the game. So I now spend my Sunday afternoons doing anything but watching football.

apitalism in space As part of the reshaping of NASA being pushed by NASA administrator Jared Isaacman, the agency today announced major changes to its future programs in low Earth orbit, on the Moon, and in exploring Mars. Video of these changes can be viewed here and here.
The Moon
NASA will now focus all work in its lunar program on getting to the surface of the Moon. Lunar Gateway is “paused,” though the language of NASA’s press release suggests more strongly that it is dead, with the agency already trying to figure out ways to “repurpose” its already built components. NASA will instead ask for proposals from private industry and its international Artemis partners to ramp up as soon as possible a phased program to establish the infrastructure on the Moon needed for the lunar base. This new focus begins with “up to 30 robotic landings in three years, starting in 2027,” and at least two manned landings per year beginning in 2028.
The graph below, presented during today’s announcement, shows the basic plan for the next few Artemis missions, which will act as the manned foundation for this entire surface-focused program. The overall program will build out the lunar base in three phases, first to test some basic infrastructure using these smaller lunar landers, second to begin establishing the base’s foundational components with intermittent manned missions, and third to begin long-term human occupancy.

I used to be a Lions fan. So even when I was watching their games, I wasn't watching football. On the plus side, they were usually out of contention by week 8 so I could stop.

There was a GREAT Green Bay Packers fan site I went to. I was friendly, polite, send them Detroit links when the teams would play. Damn, those were great people.

Granted it was a commuter train, end of the work day, and four blonde Americans got on to their dismay with one carry on suitcase.They were yapping in Finnish, which none of us speak. I was tired. Made my way to a seating of 4 lads sharing a beer over a table. One tiny man was hogging two seats and I asked politely to sit and he moved over (seeing as I was taller, lovely but with a mean crazy look in my eyes). The rest of my family were strap hangers, but not me.

They chattered away as I looked at scenic windmills and commented how pretty, etc. Knowing they hated my American guts and ignoring that fact because I did not care.

When two got off the third one actually made eye contact and was nice to me. As it bloody well should have been from the start since they were not speaking German thanks to us.

It depends on a lot of things, including the bullet, the charge, the age of the ammo, the condition of the rifle chamber and barrel, and how it was modified from 8mm Mauser to 30-06.

I hit a blacktail deer with a glaser type hunting round from a .303 Enfield at 50 feet and it did not penetrate . A friend hit a buck with a .30 carbine full jacket round and it zipped through and hit the doe behind it too.

168 Completely agree with the comment after quote number 1. The start of the NFL season was like the real start of the new year. Similar for MLB opening day. That excitement is long dead due to the politics from the players and the leagues. The only sport I watch anymore is the Masters because the grounds are so beautiful and the British Open because the terrain is so different from American courses and interesting.

183 Apparently a routine re-set of a launch clock timer somehow caused the second stage to ignite, directing flames into the first stage. Roasted a bunch of people outright, many got mired in an asphalt roadway that had melted.

IIRC the story, the engineers were running behind so the appartchek running the program planned a party on the launch pad as they were supposed to finish.

This led to the engineers and techs working round the clock and someone left a valve open letting a toxic/flammable chemical to seep out

It caught fire and then exploded killing a good deal of the USSR's best scientists, engineers, and technicians all in one go...

Artemis II is sort of like Apollo 8, but it's not going to go into lunar orbit, just a free-return fly-by. It will go "higher" beyond the Moon than any other Apollo mission and set a record for that, but it won't go into orbit.

Why? Because the stupid SLS and Orion don't have the fuel/delta-v budget to insert into lunar orbit and get out. Orion/SLS is no Apollo/Saturn V.

I owned an Apple machine back in the 90's... wasn't great then, but everything else was at least a little worse. If it has a command line interface, it just might be more tolerable than renting from Bill Gates.

Oh, they're going to use Elon's tankers. Big Time. This is what a boondoggle the SLS/Orion approach is. The lunar lander is going to be a modifed Starship, dubbed Starship HLS. It has to get the Moon and insert itself into orbit on it's own. Multiple refueling and tanker launched into LEO will be required to fuel an HLS version for its trip to the Moon.

Orion carries the crew. The dock in an EPO/CoLA orbit (that stands for Elliptical Polar with Co-plane Line of Apsides -- I roll my eyes at their acronyms).

Crew transfers to HLS to land. HLS then brings them back to Orion. At this point, you scream, if Starship is going to do all that, then why doesn't it just carry the astronauts itself to begin with?
