Interested in marrying your cousin?

If this is a desire of yours and you live in Florida, you're safe for now.

Can You Still Marry Your First Cousin in Florida? Here’s What the Failed Bill Means

A bill in Florida made some noise recently—well, more than usual legislative noise, honestly—before it quietly stalled out in the Senate. It got people asking a surprisingly common question: can you legally marry your first cousin in Florida? The short answer, at least for now, is yes… but the longer answer drifts a bit.

The proposal, known as HB 733, was introduced by Anne Gerwig back in December. On paper, it wasn’t really about cousins at all—at least not primarily. It focused on healthcare changes, workforce adjustments, Department of Health stuff… the kind of policy that rarely trends. But tucked inside, almost like an afterthought, was a provision that would make it illegal to marry your first cousin.

***

Oddly enough, the bill itself passed through the Senate without opposition. No drama there. But once it bounced back to the House, it lost momentum and died.

So as things stand, yes, you can still legally marry your first cousin in Florida. That hasn’t changed.

Believe it or not, there are currently SEVENTEEN states where first cousins can legally marry.

Marrying your first cousin is still legal in US state after law banning family union fails to pass

Audrey Hepburn’s Effortless Chic: The Iconic Givenchy Wardrobe in Charade (1963)

If there’s one film that captures Audrey Hepburn at her most stylishly modern, it’s Charade. This 1963 romantic thriller—often called “the best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock never made”—pairs Audrey with Cary Grant against a glamorous Parisian backdrop. But while the plot delivers mystery, suspense, and witty banter, it’s Audrey’s wardrobe that truly steals every scene.
Designed by her lifelong collaborator and dear friend Hubert de Givenchy, the costumes in Charade mark a perfect bridge between Old Hollywood glamour and the clean, sophisticated style of the early 1960s. No over-the-top ball gowns here, just impeccable tailoring, rich autumnal colors, structured coats, and simple yet stunning dresses that highlight Audrey’s signature gamine silhouette. The result? A wardrobe that feels utterly wearable today.

IMG_1300-rr.jpg

The Red Coat Ensemble: Playful Parisian Perfection
One of the most memorable looks is Audrey’s vibrant red wool coat paired with a crisp white pillbox hat and white gloves. Whether she’s strolling along the Seine eating an ice cream cone with Cary Grant or navigating the streets of Paris, this outfit radiates joyful elegance. The coat’s clean lines and bold color make it pop, while the accessories add polish.

IMG_1302-rr.jpg

The Marigold Coat: Bold & Structured
Givenchy’s marigold wool single-breasted knee-length coat is another standout. Featuring three-quarter sleeves and distinctive black domed buttons, this piece brings sunny energy. Audrey wears it with confidence—hands in pockets or paired with a sleek black bag—showing how a strong color and sharp tailoring can create instant impact. This look is my absolute favorite.

IMG_1303-rr.jpg

The Beige/Cream Coat & Dress: Understated Sophistication
For quieter, more introspective moments, Audrey slips into a soft cream single-breasted coat (rumored to be one she kept in her personal wardrobe). Often layered over a matching dress with a contrasting black belt or funnel neck detail, it embodies quiet luxury. The high-buttoned jackets and pencil skirts in Givenchy’s designs for the film masked the collarbone (a preference of Audrey’s) while accentuating her tiny waist. Simple, elegant, and endlessly chic.

IMG_1304-rr.jpg

IMG_1305-rr.jpg

IMG_1306-rr.jpg

The Little Black Dress and other looks
Even in a film full of daywear, Audrey delivers evening sophistication in a sleek black Givenchy cocktail dress. Fitted yet restrained, it’s paired with dramatic eye makeup. Beyond the LBD, she rocks several tailored skirt suits and shift dresses in tones like deep navy blue, cream, and black.

IMG_1308-rr.jpg

IMG_1309-rr.jpg

Accessories That Elevate Everything
No Audrey wardrobe is complete without the perfect finishing touches:
• Hats: From classic white pillboxes to leopard-print versions and headscarves.
• Gloves: Crisp white or sleek black, always adding polish.
• Shoes: Simple black kitten-heel pumps for day (with pointy blue evening slippers for night).
• Extras: Oversized sunglasses, a chic black handbag, and dramatic winged eyeliner with nude lips.

Why Charade’s Wardrobe Still Inspires Us
What makes this collection so special is its modernity. Givenchy drew from his Autumn/Winter 1962 collections, delivering tapered silhouettes, frock coats, and tailored suits that feel fresh even now. Audrey’s character, Reggie Lampert, is navigating murder, hidden treasure, and romance—and she does it all looking impossibly put-together. Many of these pieces—especially the coats—have become cultural touchstones, referenced by designers and vintage lovers alike.

If you’re looking to channel Audrey in Charade for your own wardrobe, start with a bold-colored coat, a tailored sheath dress, or a classic LBD with statement accessories. Add a pillbox hat or white gloves for that extra Old Hollywood-meets-60s flair.

27 Are you surprised by this list?

That Minnesota isn't on it, so this is the second ONT in a week or so that proves we aren't all completely insane?

.....

For anyone wondering about the North Carolina exception, "double cousins" happen when your parents' siblings also marry. If your dad's brother marries your mom's sister, or some other combination.

Then their kids are "your dad's brother's kid" and also "your mom's sister's kid," so they're cousins along two paths. Double cousins.

I know this because my Dad has some double cousins, so I have double-cousins-once-removed.

37 It's funny 'cause it's true.

Project Hail Mary writer Andy Weir savages modern Star Trek after they rejected his pitch:

“I pitched a Star Trek show to Paramount and I was in Zoom with the showrunners with all the shows and spent a lot of time talking to [executive producer Alex Kurtzman]. I don’t like a lot of the new Trek. He, as a person, is a really nice guy. But at the same time, those shows are shit. He is a nice guy. But they didn’t accept my pitch so, you know, fuck ’em.”
. . . .
Yeah, I saw a … I forgot who it was — I wish I could remember who it was who said it, some analyst — he said something like: ‘All modern science fiction TV shows and movies have been heavily influenced by the original Star Trek — except for the current batch of Star Trek shows.'

This is the first time I can remember ever being hapoy that tomorrow is a Monday. 2,000 miles in the Ram 3500 dually, 6.7L turbo diesel since last Thursday. Yesterday (i think) i tried hyper mile-ing it crusing at 55 across Texas. 18.1mpg. Today leaving DFW towards Shittle Rock on I-30, speed limit is 75, to keep from being run down i cruised at 75. 18.1mpg. It doesn't freaking care, 1200rpm, or 2,000 rpm, 18.1mpg. It's a very comfy ride too, i'd be sore and achey from the charger after those miles, but the 3500 no issues at all.

Thank God tomorrow is Monday as I get back home tomorrow. Looking forward to some down time.

Posted by: Tonypete

Statistically, everyone on earth is probably your 100th cousin at the absolute furthest, just because there weren't that many people back then.

If you're not first cousins, then your grandparents are 4 different people. Not second cousins, then your great-grandparents are 8 different people. And it doubles every generation back.

That doesn't mean you can't be 28th cousins, just because there weren't 2 billion people alive 30 generations ago. But it means if you are further apart than that, each of you is inbred several times over already, since your own ancestors had to have interbred.

Since travel was amazingly limited for most of human history, anyone socially similar is probably much much closer than 100th. So if you're an Average White Dude, you're probably marrying your 10th-15th cousin if you marry an Average White Girl. And you're not getting near 100th unless you're marrying a Samoan or an African pygmy or someone from some other genetic cul-de-sac.

Even with all other things being stable, one fundamental difference in worldviews between two large segments of a society is enough to shatter it.

But, with the size and diversity of America, our fundamental differences travel along every fault line in society... economic, cultural, geographic, religious, racial, linguistic, and so on - everything here is in conflict, and no longer the healthy kind.

And unlike the only other similarly gigantic and diverse country, we have no tradition of ruthless autocracy to keep all those wild horses in the same harness.

I posted an AMS report on this the other night. Here it is again:
https://is.gd/zvt5U5

What's going on is a bit complicated. Q1 of 2026 was at the top of the fireball event count. A couple other years have seen similar counts. What's different about this is the number of large fireball events, seen by many people and with sonic booms.

The seem to be coming from the antihelion point and from high declinations. The latter would be from debris in high inclined orbits (relative to the ecliptic).

And if you add a generation on only one side of the family tree, that's where you get the "cousin, X times removed."

If you an I are first cousins, then your kids and I are first cousins once removed. Your grandkids and I are first cousins twice removed. etc.

Same if we're second cousins; then your kids and I are second cousins once removed. etc.

Double cousins I explained back at #27; if "your mom's sister's kid" and "your dad's brother's kid" are the same kid, because your parents' siblings married, then that kid is your double cousin.

Half-cousins come from half-siblings; your mom's half-sister's kid is your half-cousin.

So it's possible, if pairs of half-siblings marry, to have a "double half cousin."

All the trees are blooming now and it's a beautiful but muted spring to go from lack of snow to skipping spring to warm. Weird. Getting some rain this week or a lot of my decades old daffodils are kaput for some reason (maybe the gradual build up to warm weather vs hello! Who needs spring?). Or the peach daffodils are not as hardy and I will replace them

179 For Palm Sunday:

Hosanna - Jesus Christ Superstar (1970 album version)
https://youtu.be/wsKLXFlhk7s

For all its many faults, Jesus Christ Superstar had some great bits. Of course, it had the best source material.

I’ve always thought, the great thing about Jesus saying the stones themselves would cry out (Luke 19:40) is, he wasn’t just speaking metaphorically. It was one of the most powerful moments in history. However superficial and fickle the mobs turned out to be later.
❤️✝️

Fun trivia: I was DJ'ing at WBeloitCollegeRadio (mighty 5 watts at 88.1FM, could be heard in Rockford when the wind was right) when the station manager handed me the original boxed Jesus Christ Superstar album, complete with all the background promo on the performers and writers and production. We had West Coast connections in those days. I was, I'd bet, the first to play the album on Midwest radio. FWIW.

Wish I'd kept the promo package, but we respected the station library in those great days. I loved thumbing through the record collection - it had everything, all genres. A few years later, the station had been taken over and the library ransacked by snot-nosed vermin youngsters.

Cousin marriage is often a mechanism to avoid breaking up estates, or losing land through out-marriage dowries and inheritance. Virginia had the large, landed estate class which sought to maintain their lands and fortunes, and West Virginia generally were small holders who either had little to nothing, or might improve by marriage.

It's not. It's always been two lanes at a minimum.

It's also all paved nowadays, so that's either an old picture or a picture of some other highway (possibly in Alaska.... there are plenty of unpaved highways here, but the Alcan isn't one of them).

It was all unpaved when I came up as a whippersnapper going on 50 years ago. It was a real adventure back then.

Interestingly, I have recently read that cosmopolitan NYC has more consanguinity than Appalachia. Photos of mutant-looking men can be attributed to malnutrition, and "laziness" to malaria. In other words, the most negative parts of the "hillbilly" stereotype are an ignorant prejudice of sheltered cityfolk who need to get out of their (inbred) borough and see the wider world.

There is some evidence that marrying 1st cousins every 3 or more generations is usually not harmful ... but continuously doing it leads to the nightmare many Muslims are living.

There is some evidence that marrying 3rd cousins is slightly better than marrying non-relatives, but IIRC it is weak and the debate continues.

Plenty of open carry here, just not preferable.

When you go to licensed ranges here, you usually bring your "old" ammo from home, fire it, and replace the missing 100 inventory with bullets purchased on site.

I'm sure there are competitions. Again, organized by licensed ranges. If you go off to the middle of nowhere and come back with less ammo, you will need to explain where did your bullet inventory go to. Totally illegal.

BTW, there are separate licenses for competition sports and hunting guns.

No lack of 9MM ammo in this country.

Yesterday, I treated myself to a custom Eclipse Intrepid IWB holster. Nifty!
