Top Story

DDR5 RAM prices have dipped slightly following Google's TurboQuant announcement that allows AI models to run in a fraction of the amount of memory. (Notebook Check)

While TurboQuant is real and does substantially reduce the amount of memory taken up for quantized vector database used to store LLM weights while - and this is the trick - not noticeably increasing noise in the models, any connection with commodity DDR5 memory pricing is best expressed in the polar co-ordinate system that TurboQuant is built on.

By which I mean it is imaginary.
Meanwhile the third horseshoe of the Tech Apocalypse has dropped with SSD pricing headed into orbit. (YouTube)

This has been expected since DRAM prices headed the same way starting in November, but it was delayed by the large volume of devices already in the retail channel.

Now reality has hit, hard, with prices doubling and further increases likely. The video notes that spot prices have increased ninefold, though that doesn't mean that drive prices will increase by the same amount.

What it does mean is that the smaller manufacturers who didn't have existing long-term contracts have just been wiped out, while the companies making the NAND flash chips - Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix, again, plus Western Digital, Kioxia, and China's YTMC, can set whatever prices they choose.

(The second horseshoe was the graphics card market, though that has been muted so far unless you were looking to buy an RTX 5070 Ti or higher. Prices of AMD and Intel cards have increased a little, but nothing like the devastation that has hit the memory market.)

ClickFix is an anagram which means "I'm too lazy to hack you myself but I think you're dumb enough do do the work for me". As the article shows, it presents a page telling users to open a terminal session and execute a command that will download and install the malware in question.

Where upon it steals all your passwords and the contents of any crypto wallets while laughing so hard it makes itself sick.

The guy who put age verification in systemd is whining that people pointed out that this obviously bad idea was in fact a bad idea. (It's FOSS)

They've gone all in on ai and have allowed complete crapification of their OS and application suites.

They've now announced they are going to steal all of your code and your IP when you interact with any of their ai agents unless you opt out.

They are doing this under the guise of training their agents but that's just ruse.

I keep hearing stories from my elderly mother about how her friends keep running into bad computer problems, and they end up having to go to the local "fix it" shop and spend one or two hundred dollars every few months to deal with whatever happened now.

The scammers have identified elderly computer users as a target-rich environment with financial savings that can be stolen. They want those bank credentials or session cookies on those computers. The easiest way to get those is to compromise the user of the computer (the wetware attack.)

The scammers are the modern version of Willie Sutton. They're going after the elderly because "that's where the money is."

I used to do heavy whipping cream and sugar in my coffee, for most of my life (started drinking coffee mid-way through high school as a way to cope with a morning algebra class.) I tried it black, but it was truly awful to me so I put sugar and cream in and kept doing that for decades.

A couple of years ago, I just decided I needed to try to adjust to black coffee, because I suspected that the extra sugar and cream daily wasn't doing my health any favours.

The first two weeks were rough. "Oh yeah, this is why I put cream and sugar in my coffee in the first place. Oh dear God this is bitter. Power through, I need to know if this is going to work long term."

By the third week, I wasn't having any of the shock and taste revulsion, and I'd adjusted. Now it's just my morning drink again.

So yes, it can be done, it just won't be a very pleasant transition.

Parents let us start having a cup of coffee on weekend mornings around age 8. Lots of milk & sugar, of course. Quit adding milk while in college, went to just black around 22, had to switch to decaf a few years later. Discovered Starbucks mochas about 25 years ago, so one of them every morning and, on weekdays, about a quart of decaf.

When I was in graduate school, I had the vad luck to work with a postdoc who wore a Greek fisherman's cap out of pride for his baldness.

He was a skulking weasel who skipped town having left behind a broken photomultiplier tube that exhibited very low noise in operation. It was beloved by his irascible Puerto Rican mentor, Marcos, who was the lab's owner. The worthless (and bald) shit heel hid the PMT's corpse in some construction debris in the lab and then, over the phone with Marcos, tried to lay the blame for its demise on my head. Marcos knew him well and bounced that excuse off his bald head. I wonder where he now is?

a) Can't get the memory they need

The AI bubble pop needs to pop, and it needs to do so SOON to prevent this outcome, otherwise the customers in the commercial/retail sector won't be there when the big three memory manufacturers try to pivot back to selling to it.

My wife grew up about 5 miles (as the crow flies) south of it. She said they never worried about nuclear war because if there was one, they’d be gone right off the bat.

The recent drone activity is interesting and disturbing, especially for the revelation that the base has no defenses for that kind of thing. I get why they’re having trouble determining the source; the front side of the base and main entrance faces Bossier City, but the back side is open to about 10,000 acres of woods and bayous, much of which appears to be impenetrable. Somebody up to stuff back there would be hard to find or catch.

174 Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro, marking the end of an era for the company’s flagship desktop computer after two decades. As of March 26, 2026, the Mac Pro has been removed from Apple’s website, with its product page now redirecting to the general Mac homepage. The company confirmed to 9to5Mac that it has no plans for future Mac Pro hardware.
