The Taking of Christ
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

This is a repeat, but Caravaggio is a titan of the Baroque world, and nobody does it better!

65 Big Day way back then:

Jesus and his twelve apostles shared (the Last Supper)
Jesus washed the feet of his disciples
He instituted the Eucharist
He predicted that Judas would betray him.
Judas left the meal to arrange the betrayal
Jesus gave his Farewell Discourse (John 13–17), including the new commandment to love one another.
After the meal, they sang a hymn and went to the Mount of Olives
In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed intensely (“Let this cup pass from me”, while the apostles slept. He was then arrested by soldiers led by Judas.

90 Caravaggio is a master in the use of light in all of his paintings. The points of light here showing the faces and hands of Christ, Judas and the others bring out their varied reactions. The outrage and panic of the disciples and the fixed, deliberate expression of Judas knowing he is betraying Christ and still doing it. But the look on Christ's face and his intertwined hands is the focus: the pain of the betrayal and acceptance of his destiny. It is a supremely human moment. The soldiers' faces are not distinct even though there is detail. They are human tools, not people. The power of the painting reveals itself as the viewer continues to look even though the moment is known. And all this was Caravaggio's realism.

The painting would lead to complete despair if not for the knowledge of the resurrection to come.

Posted by: Bad Andrew

After Judas Iscariot saw that Jesus was condemned, he was filled with remorse and tried to return the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. Declaring he had "sinned by betraying innocent blood," he threw the money into the temple sanctuary before leaving to hang himself.

The chief priests refused the money, stating it was "blood money" and not lawful to put into the temple treasury.
The priests used the returned coins to buy a potter's field as a burial place for strangers, which became known as the "Field of Blood".

I grew up in Vegas in the 60s and 70s, and the funniest thing ever was driving from The Strip to Downtown and seeing a quickie "wedding chapel" on every corner.

The most famous one was one where you could be married by an Elvis Impersonator.

I also found it hilarious that Reno, NV held the title of "Divorce Capital of the World" for more than six decades, primarily due to its exceptionally lenient divorce laws which allowed "residents" to establish residency in just six weeks starting in 1931.

Kurt Vonnegut opined that what ticked off Judas about Jesus was Mary having anointed Jesus' feet with perfume and Judas protested that the money wasted on the perfume ought ro have gone to the poor. 252 65 Big Day way back then:

Jesus and his twelve apostles shared (the Last Supper)
Jesus washed the feet of his disciples
He instituted the Eucharist
He predicted that Judas would betray him.
Judas left the meal to arrange the betrayal
Jesus gave his Farewell Discourse (John 13–17), including the new commandment to love one another.
After the meal, they sang a hymn and went to the Mount of Olives
In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed intensely (“Let this cup pass from me”, while the apostles slept. He was then arrested by soldiers led by Judas.

253 90 Caravaggio is a master in the use of light in all of his paintings.
