Trump Announces He Will Unilaterally Fund DHS and Dares Democrats to Sue to Stop Him;
Republican Senators Offer Democrats Deal, and Democrat Senators Accept

The "deal" is exactly what you'd expect from Mitch McConnell's prison punk John Thune: Capitulation. When a Ted Cruz demands a government shut-down to advance a conservative goal, the GOPe shrieks that that's not how we do business and caves immediately. But when the Democrats shut the government down, the GOPe also caves.

Update: Commenters disagree with my hot take. I have included their dissent before the jump.

But first, Trump's declaration that he will fund DHS on his own authority, citing powers under the National Emergencies Act.

I don't know if the president is allowed to bypass Congress' chief power over the purse through the Emergencies Act or if it's still beyond his power. But it's only beyond his power if a judge rules it so after Democrats bring lawsuit to stop him, and I don't know if they'd have the balls to be so open about wanting to keep TSA agents unpaid as well as DHS counter-terrorism agents during a war with the terror state of Iran.

trumpdhsorderfull.png

Fox:

President Trump announced on Thursday he will sign an emergency order to pay TSA agents and hopefully relieve congestion at the nation's largest airports.

In a lengthy Truth Social post where he savaged Democrats for their role in refusing to fund the Department of Homeland Security, Trump said he would see that the agents are paid.

"Because the Democrats have recklessly created a true National Crisis, I am using my authorities under the Law to protect our Great Country, as I always will do!" Trump said.

"I am going to sign an Order instructing the Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, to immediately pay our TSA Agents in order to address this Emergency Situation, and to quickly stop the Democrat Chaos at the Airports. It is not an easy thing to do, but I am going to do it!," he wrote.

His announcement came as Republicans and Democrats struggle to fund the department and as Transportation Security Administration employees faced a second month without a paycheck.

Under the National Emergency Act, the president could order unspent government funds to be used to temporarily pay TSA employees -- a move that would bypass Congress.

Republicans have the majority in the Senate but lack the 60 votes needed to advance DHS funding in the legislative process.

Rather than letting this play out, GOPe Senators caved and gave the Democrats what they wanted -- the TSA would be funded, but the parts of DHS that Democrats want to defund, ICE and the Border Patrol, will be defunded, just as the Democrats wanted.

This is a deal? Give them everything they want?

DHS shutdown breakthrough comes at cost for Republicans as funding fights nears end

Senate Republicans are eying reconciliation as a long-term solution for ICE and CBP funding

Again, Thune is pushing the idea that he'll concede everything on the vote but he'll "make it up during budget reconciliation."

But budget reconciliation requires cuts to the budget. How exactly is spending the money for CBP and ICE a budget cut? The Democrats are actually cutting the budget by defunding two agencies.

Congress is one step closer to ending the Homeland Security shutdown after the Senate advanced a new, last-minute deal, but it came at the price of Republicans ceding ground, temporarily, to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

The Senate unanimously advanced a deal to reopen most of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the wee hours of Friday morning, 42 days into the shutdown that was spurred by the Trump administration's immigration operations in Minnesota.

It was an agreement that largely gave Schumer and Senate Democrats what they wanted -- no funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and parts of Customs and Border Protection (CBP). But it lacked the stringent reforms they desired, like requiring judicial warrants or requiring agents to unmask.

While the deal mirrors previous attempts by Democrats to pass similar legislation that carved out immigration funding, Thune argued that Democrats are still walking away empty-handed in the policy fight over immigration enforcement.

"We've been trying for weeks to fund the whole thing," Thune said. "And, I mean, in the end, this is what they were willing to agree to. But again, it's different that it has zero reforms in it. I mean, they got no reforms on DHS, which they could have had if they had been willing to work with us a little bit on that."

Schumer said that if Republicans hadn't blocked their initial attempts, "this could have been done three weeks ago."

"This is exactly what we wanted," Schumer said. "This is what we asked for, and I'm very proud of my caucus. My caucus held the line."

Now it goes to the House -- and I'm sure House conservatives aren't happy about this.

But what Thune has done is make it politically costly for conservatives to veto the deal. Now, Democrats will be able to say "It's the MAGA Republican shut-down!"

Also, Thune has given up all leverage. The Democrats want to defund ICE and CBP. They want a wide-open border. You can only force them to fund those agencies by tying that funding to something that it is costly for them to refuse to fund -- like TSA and DHS counter-terrorism operations.

But now, they have the funding for the stuff they want, and can refuse to fund the stuff they don't want with no penalty whatsoever.

And Republican Senators are already warning us: BTW, this whole "reconcilliation" thing is Failure Theater Bullshit so don't expect the funding to actually pass.

And some Republicans are already couching expectations on what can and can't be accomplished in the party-line process, given that anything in the bill has to pass muster with strict rules in the Senate.

"I think we have to set our sights a little bit lower on this reconciliation bill," Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., told Fox News Digital. "It's got to be targeted to fund ICE for 10 years, I think that's the number one thing to us."

Or possibly he's saying "I know we told you we'd pass the SAVE Act by reconciliation, which was also Failure Theater Bullshit, but now that we've got this new Failure Theater Bullshit production going, you have to accept we've got to "set our sights a little lower" and just do the ICE and CBP funding as our first-priority Failure Theater Bullshit.

It's almost as if the GOPe exists to pretend to oppose the Democrats while giving the communists everything they want, and then turning to the public and saying, "All of this was done constitutionally, because the 'opposition' party did in fact agree to all of the communists' demands."

Brilliant, Thune, you Gollum to Mitch McConnell's Sauron.

Update: Commenters disagree.

They played a big bluff...and had to fold it with losses, since they are now on record as giving in as a full group...

If the bill doesn't include a bar on face masks, ID requirements, and a ban on ICE going into "sensitive" locations, then it's not a GOP cave, it's a Democrat cave.

Those things were what Democrats wanted. They said so many times.

They didn't get those things.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison

Ace, I see this differently: it was the Democunts who caved, assuming this deal goes through. You can tell by how desperately they moved the goalposts. Cuck Schemer is now cheering that ... he got TSA funded at airports.

The shutdown wasn't about incremental funding for ICE and BP, as ICE and BP are already funded through 2028. The shutdown was about unmasking agents, identification requirements, limits on where ICE could go, and basically making their lives hell.

Dums got none of that. So they are now pretending it was always about funding TSA at airports. (Huh? They shut down the gov't over TSA?) Since TSA funding was restored -- something Trump and the GOP wanted too -- the Dums are claiming they won.

This is a win for the GOP -- albeit not a 100% complete one -- and a cave for the Dums. Not the other way around.

19 The House Freedom Caucus just said they are a no on this bill until ICE is included and the SAVE Act is amended to it.

Also, Democrats did’t get everything they wanted. This is what Republicans proposed some time ago when Democrats indicated they would not vote to fund DHS. Democrats also wanted changes to ICE operations. Then when Republicans conceded some of that, Democrats raised the bar again and made a lot of other demands. That’s when Trump said FU and declared an emergency. At that point Democrats knew they were screwed and accepted the original deal Republicans proposed.

BTW just think about this. Democrats screwed American citizens and put them through the TSA wringer to show their support for illegal aliens. There is no other way to read what they did.

Is that their midterm winning message?

Posted by: Marcus T at March 27, 2026 12:19 PM (zfkPG)

20 No funding for ICE?

So, all the new agents are getting fired, right?

There are rescissions in the funding bill that undo OBBB, right?

ICE are just going to outright stop enforcing immigration law, that which they've been doing nonstop throughout the whole shutdown to the point where they were the only DHS employees getting paid in airports when they showed up to help TSA?

Fast-forward to today, and all the citizens are taught (through schools or life experience) that there are only democrats and republicans, nothing else....

Posted by: Kindltot at March 27, 2026 12:33 PM (rbvCR)

99 Look, if there's a loser, it's the American people who will now probably have a more radicalized DHS. Why?

This was the 2nd shutdown with missed paycheck for DHS in 6 months. Who can afford to miss paychecks multiple times a year? No one on a government salary, especially no one with a family and a single wage earner on a government salary. So, who left in these shutdowns? The conservative employees, the employees with families with kids,, the employees who COULD leave and were competent.

Who stayed? The zealots, the f&ckups, and the single folks...aka, the blue dream for government employees...

So, you now can expect a less competent, more liberally zealot, and more liberal voting crew...

100 I saw the 4K remastered version of Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS. Legendary in its time (although surely most of that was hype for marketing), it's fairly tame by modern standards. It's basically soft-core sex porn and soft-core torture porn.

What was most surprising is how well it was made. The budget is obviously low, but the director and crew knew how to shoot a movie. Good framing, some nice camerawork, and decent lighting for a movie with a budget about what it costs to feed the crew for a day on a modern Hollywood movie.

It's pure sleaze and schlock, but even then they had to try to dress up exploitative crap as a victory for feminism. Isla is supposedly some kind of feminist icon. Ummm ... ok.

She's a sadistic lunatic who tortures women, forced them to be raped by SS soldiers, and murders them. She violates women in the most vile manner possible, literally shoving flaming, spiked, electrified dildos up their vaginas until they die. The most abusive, misogynistic male rapist would be like "that bitch is cray-cray."

But yea, she's a victory for women. Feminists are fucked in the head.

Really shows you how much the entire thing was political theatre on the republican side. It’s disgusting what they’re willing to do to their fellow Americans.

So, they're passing what Democrats proposed before the 40 day shutdown. Kind of like how the goal of the war in Iran is now opening the Strait of Hormuz when it was open prior to the war.

FINALLY! I bet the House won’t pass it, or trump won’t sign it, though. Doesn't matter. Deal is on the table. Any pain after this is strictly on the GOP.

They passed it because they are taking 2 weeks off for vacation and want to be able to fly. Can we please overthrow this entire government already? They literally are worthless

I wonder what else is buried in this bill. Republicans must have voted for it for some reason. I not really seeing them being altruistic at this point in time

Deportation is the farkin' civil remedy. It deprives the individual not at all of liberty or property. Sending someone back to their home country is not a damage.

Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at March 27, 2026 12:46 PM (WONhk)

171 I have not really been following this, and the democrat demands have been very vague publicly.

But what they wanted was "due process." Habeas basically. They wanted anyone captured by ICE to have government funded attorney, right to go in front of a court to determine if the state has right to hold them and deport them.

For those with deportation orders, this is second bite at apple since they were already in front of a judge.

But there are others who ICE is allowed to deport without that, and Dems wanted this "due process" for all. They are not citizens, so do not have *full* constitutional rights, but they have some and that is the big argument.

In past, the Dems have tried to do this for all immigration cases and they even wanted a special immigration court in DC (so under Dem control, dem districts, dem juries, ...)

They want this because it will (a) stop the deportations, and (b) make the legal industrial complex very rich.

Did ICE get defunded? No. Is ICE being forced to remove their masks? No. Did Democrats get any of things they were demanding to pass a DHS funding bill? No.

I don't like the deal because it sets precedent that the Senate can now fund only parts of agencies they like instead of funding everything. I'm sure that will come back to bite us at some point.

But Democrats didn't score a big win no matter what they say publicly unless there are things in this bill that haven't come to light yet.

Yea, there's a shower scene in the first 5 minutes of She-Wolf. It's comically cheesy and exploitative, and the very sharp 4K restoration shows something that probably nobody saw before: the outline of the breast implant balloons and the incision lines where she was cut open to insert them.

In the commentary, a much older Thorne is commenting on that scene, and on the exploitative nudity and sex in general. She's clearly embarrassed by it. But rather than say "hey, it was the 70s, I was young and getting paid to get naked," she babbles some incoherency about it all being about female empowerment.

Recesses (real ones) require a majority vote from the floor. The Senate is not going to give up its power over appointments, especially this GOP.

Thune is going through the motions on the SAVE act like he did on the OBBB. It's probably all an effort to appease a handful of on the cusp GOP senators (like Collins) to make sure their vote is done.

Also, he has to go through the whole debate thing (which they're doing) in order to bypass cloture.

The SAVE act, from the outside, looks like it's being maneuvered towards passage.

What a disturbing memory you just reminded me of!

I was getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed (all under the gum) because Navy submarine service required that you don't have them before reporting to your boat.

I had a Navy dentist, who happened to be in training. He pumped me full of Novocain, and the top two popped right out... but the bottom two required cutting deep into the gums, and the last needed, like you said, jack-hammering to break it up, and pull out the pieces...

Problem was, the Novocain was wearing off. I tried to tell him, but I had like an oil filter removal tool in my mouth... I started yelling, and I remember him saying " OK, just relax Petty Officer ******, we're almost there! He had his hand on my chest trying to get leverage to pull the fragments from my jaw...

It was quite a memorable experience.

oh boy, you are mistaken! the Hobbit is not long, the others are huge! 500 pages each, and they're written in a much more serious, deep style than the Hobbit, which is written in this breezy, chatty style like it's a grandfather just telling you a story he's making up as he goes. Think of it this way:
The very very best the Dems can hope for this upcoming midterm is ... a narrow majority in the House.
If the Dems had the SCOTUS, the Presidency and the Senate, would you be excited that the Republicans might could possibly win a narrow majority in the House?

Again: Compare Trump in Oct. 2020, Oct. 2024 and now.

LOL! Wut?

I'm reading Fellowship right now. Just the story is around 400 pages, though there's a considerable prologue explaining hobbits.

The other two are shorter. Two Towers is around 350 pages and Return of the King is about 300 pages.

Mine are trade paperback copies, though. The mass-market paperbacks will be longer.

I also find the prose much easier to read in Lord of the Rings for the most part. I found the style of The Hobbit to be much more long-winded in places.

The "halal certification" is purely in how the cow was killed, which I have no doubt is paying off some Muslim grifter to certify it regardless whether it's really halal. There was a scandal in NYC some years back over fake "kosher" certifications.

There are lots of restaurants in heavily Muslim areas who promote their menus as "halal" because if not they would lose all those customers.

272 The Silmarillion has some great lines and stories but you can tell it was never completed for publication.

West, North, and South the children of Men spread and wandered, and their joy was the joy of the morning before the dew is dry, when every leaf is green.

But the dawn is brief and the day full often belies its
promise; and now the time drew on to the great wars of the powers of the North, when Noldor and Sindar and Men strove against the hosts of Morgoth Bauglir, and went down in ruin.

People keep saying that it's important to win threads. I say it's just as important to thread wins.

And we can start today. You can start today. I can start today. Olay?

Everyone can win a thread or thread a win if we just start today. Start today. It doesn't matter when you start. It could be today or it could be tomorrow. What matters is that you do it. That you do it. That you do it.

Because what really matters isn't what's in a thread. It's what's in your heart. What's in a thread can change but what's in your heart is real. Because blood is real. Right? It has types and it is real. O. B. AB. It's real. They're all real. These other people, they're gonna go out there and tell you that blood isn't real. But it is.

It is.

Mine are trade paperback copies, though. The mass-market paperbacks will be longer.

You are right on the page count (now that I check) but LOTR is written more densely than the Hobbit. The pages literally are packed with more words. My version of The Hobbit has a low word count per page.

>>>I also find the prose much easier to read in Lord of the Rings for the most part. I found the style of The Hobbit to be much more long-winded in places.

I think this is probably a minority position!

The Hobbit does waffle about but amusingly, like a Bernie Wooster story.

Then he cast aside his shield, and wielded an axe two-handed; and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew Hurin cried: 'Aure entuluva! Day shall come again!' Seventy times he uttered that cry; but they took him at last alive, by the command of Morgoth, for the Ores grappled him with their hands, which clung to him still though he hewed off their arms; and ever their numbers were renewed, until at last he fell buried beneath them. Then Gothmog bound him and dragged him to Angband with mockery.

345 >>>338 Last of all Hurin stood alone. Then he cast aside his shield, and wielded an axe two-handed; and it is sung that the axe smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew Hurin cried: 'Aure entuluva! Day shall come again!' Seventy times he uttered that cry; but they took him at last alive, by the command of Morgoth, for the Orcs grappled him with their hands, which clung to him still though he hewed off their arms; and ever their numbers were renewed, until at last he fell buried beneath them. Then Gothmog bound him and dragged him to Angband with mockery.

thanks for the quote.

My mom had me put teabags over the holes to sop up bleeding which helped a lot.

350 Daughter is out, teeth removed, but the anesthesia made her cry, so they were going home.
Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at March 27, 2026 01:16 PM (5bGGs)

Thank you. Everyone is different on anesthesia. She should be better soon. Fluids get rid of the anesthesia.

We had both sons done the same day. One was a pale, groggy, sleepy mess. The other would not shut up in glee and I told him this was why he was bleeding more than his brother. Their father and I had to walk them to their rooms (at this point both were taller than me).

At the time, over 20yrs ago, the HS rumor was a Frosty would cure it all. No nutrition but we got them Frosty from Wendy's. No straws as sucking straws dislodges clot.

They did have other stuff from nurse Mom for protein.

One thing that kept swelling down was ice. I'd put a soft ice wrap on both sides, tie a towel around that, and did this for the first day. They looked like bunnies but let me do what I wanted to them and it worked. Once they revived they played video games and I have a photo of them in this condition.

If you have her email, tell her this, please. I am always late to the party.

351 SO WHAT YAHOO WAS TELLING ME WAS RIGHT?

If everything is funded until 2029 through the BBB....how is it now DEfunded?

None of this makes sense....except when viewed through the lense of another manufactured GOP cave and surrender to hobble the president and any congressman that actually wants to do their job(s).

Good on Trump for seeing the GOPe+Commie plan to fuck us.

This fight (to find agencies that are already funded for the next several years (huh??) will decide if Dems take the Senate.

But, the GOP wants the Dems to take th Senate....so they'll probably take the Senate.

354 Eh, the Democrats get absolutely ZERO out of this deal. Not even the watered-down "reforms" limp-dick Republicans previously conceded to.

It's not a GOP win by a long shot, but it's a HUGE Dem "L" - they get nothing for all of the pain they inflicted.
Posted by: can of spam at March 27, 2026 12:14 PM (14gFN)

That's how I see it too. The Donks just put DHS through Hell for 6 weeks over for a whole of nothing. The entire "defund ICE" is a smoke-screen for the Dem CHUDs ... umm ... fully funded until 2029, the so future will have to take care of itself.

For all the blather from Democrats about "protecting our precious democracy (tm)" they're doing more to ensure that future Presidents will have to take action without any sort of fig-leaf approval from the U.S. Congress. The Ship-of-State has to keep sailing. These drones are just demonstrating that they are useless and a hindrance to good governance.
