Tuesday Cafe

cassidyarch.jpg
The Cassidy Arch at Capitol Reef National Park (UT),
so-called because it is near one of Butch Cassidy's hide-outs

Alpaca has my fifth-grade haircut. So stylish!

Fear me.

Town builds statue to commemorate day that citizens formed human chain to pull a dog out of a dangerously-fast canal.

This seems like it would be pretty distracting.

Programmers designed the worst-possible volume controls for a computer or phone. These are their stories.

The Last Waterbender.

Golden retrievers rescued from "deplorable" conditions in what I guess was a breeding or hoarding situation are all in loving homes now.

My favorite Cafe story: 11-year-old dog who spent seven years in a shelter finally got adopted and lived her best life.

My second favorite story: Pregnant dog is rescued and family friends care for and then adopt all 11 puppies, and once a year, they have a big family reunion.

I was just looking at the Artemis countdown timeline. NASA will stream this on their Youtube channel. Other streamers will likely being doing their feeds as well. Anyway, the main broadcast beings at 12:50 PM.

Tanking operations, if they're a go, will start around 7:45AM, and they may stream some of that, but it will be boring, unless something explodes.

Crew will head to the pad around 1:45PM. Blastoff will be at 6:45PM. Well, that's the scheduled time. There will be a delay, I'm sure. Launch window is 2 hours, so they've got until 8:45PM.

I never gambled much but I won when I went to the horse track betting on straight win place and show tickets. All well less than $50 bucks. Horse racing was the only time I spent an afternoon winning consistently (hit eight out of 12 races in the money). And $2 buck tickets added up to less than $25 dollars for twelve races. Probably won about double the amount I bet that day.

Vegas on a TDY to Nellis AFB, I lost about thirty bucks--a bit on slots, a bit on black jack, a bit on roulette back in the early 90's. Enough to say I did it. Dog track I would go with friends, get a few beers, and spend about $20 bucks for an evening including refreshments. Rarely won on those two buck tickets.

Never been cared enough anymore to gamble after my youth.

Mangos are related to poison ivy and poison oak, and contain urushiol, the substance that causes irritation, rash and itching. So if you have a sensitivity or an allergy you can get what is essentially a case of poison ivy in your mouth and throat from eating mango.

Had sandwiches with some and the rest I put in the stew. Nice smokey flavor (Worchester sauce, BBQ sauce, and bit of molasses can do that) along with the smoked pork in the stew.

Easier than making my marinara or meat sauces for pasta as I didn't have to cook the meat in the first place.

Spain's shift to "renewable" or "clean" energy has meant that its energy prices ain't so bad. Because they don't rely on Gulf LNG like a lot of Europe.
Their energy bills might be high, but they won't be shockingly high. Also Spain has a lot of empty land with sunlight; it's comparable to the high plains of the US.
Solar makes sense there, maybe wind too. Not Germany so much.
This explains why Spain doesn't care about the war and is free to thumb its nose at the US. Also maybe explains why Trump is shaming Britain and France to step up (and probably should shame Germany), and can't touch Spain.

Gas powered turbines have "momentum", so when they run out of fuel they take awhile to spin down. If the solar is out and there isn't spare battery power, the power goes out right away.

For a more sobering appraisal,
"Spain's solar sector faces a dual crisis of oversupply and grid instability, characterized by severe economic losses for developers and a catastrophic grid failure in April 2025. Overproduction has driven wholesale electricity prices to zero or negative levels for significant portions of the day, causing project valuations to plummet from €200,000 to as low as €28,000 per megawatt. Simultaneously, the April 28, 2025 blackout, which plunged 55 million people in Spain and Portugal into darkness, exposed vulnerabilities in the grid's ability to handle high renewable penetration without sufficient inertia."

Posted by: whig at March 31, 2026 08:42 PM (E4rtv)

122 Continued, source Brave AI

Key issues driving these problems include:

Grid Inertia Deficit: The heavy reliance on solar and wind, which use grid-following inverters, left the system without the physical inertia needed to stabilize frequency, causing cascading failures when generation was lost.
Curtailment and Financial Loss: Grid operator Red Eléctrica has issued curtailment orders to shut down solar plants during peak production, often without compensation, while limited export capacity to France prevents the surplus from being sold abroad.
Regulatory and Bureaucratic Barriers: Slow permitting processes and a lack of regulated markets for ancillary services like voltage control have stalled the deployment of necessary battery storage, which is critical for managing the energy glut.
Legacy Policy Risks: The industry still grapples with the long-term impact of the "sun tax" and retroactive subsidy cuts from the 2008-2012 era, which created lasting distrust among investors and homeowners.

While the government aims to double solar capacity to 76GW by 2030, the sector is currently in a "freefall" with a forecasted slowdown in new projects for 2026.

Grid instability caused (you see this on a small scale as well in installs if one part of the solar array is generating more power than another part (shaded, dirty, whatever), the whole system then defaults (unless you have micro inverters for every several panels) to a lower energy output.

In a large grid, variable power supplies like solar or wind need substantial backup to keep the grid stable, avoid voltage spikes or sags, and to keep the frequency (50 hz IRRC in Euroland) from deviating. That means you need power sources that can spin up immediately when the power from variable sources start dropping (and some means of dumping excess power which is a bit easier). That means usually natural gas generators as battery storage is insufficient in Spain at this time to do it. Nukes, coal, and I think oil, generators take a fair chunk of time to come online.

Dunno. I think the French themselves have not been building much and the Germans now are a big customer of French nuke power after shutting down their own and cutting off their gas supplies from Russki land.

I think large arrays of either solar or wind are a mistake versus smaller scale backup units at homes where it could serve as redundancy for the main grid without causing as much problems with instability.

Grids are fickle things and lack of heat or cooling can cause a lot of deaths as our housing and our lifestyles are not congruent anymore with third world conditions.

Grids work best with a solid baseline power--that means, nukes, coal, or oil with some reserve spin up plants (usually nat gas powered).

And Sphere. I didn't like the movie.

The following is a spoiler but it's so old I'm making the command decision a spoiler is ok.

So in Crichton's book of the same name that it was based on at the end he uses the neat literary device of the untrustworthy narrator. Based on how the end is narrated and the dialog between the main characters coming up to the surface you know that the chick character has accessed the sphere and is now controlling everything, every aspect of reality. Everything on earth, humanity, all of that portion of the universe is now screwed. Because the woman is mental. And really, no one could have that ability and not screw everything up. But definitely not her. But the movie erases all of that.

At the end of the movie it's all great, no one has the power, lets just tie it all up with a nice little bow. - FIN -

Someone died while we were backpacking. He was rappelling into a canyon and it went wrong. We do not have the technical skills to do that sort of thing solo. We just backpacked. We hired a shuttle to take us to the trailhead. He took our picture just in case we died and help was needed identifying us. That was sobering. But we had an awesome time.

Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at March 31, 2026 09:03 PM (syAfa)

145 Now the end of the Sphere movie would make since if you read the book in a sort of half assed meta way. The writing of the ending of the movie was actually controlled by the chick's power, and so you the viewer don't even know. Unless you read the book. Reading is a power that trumps the Sphere power? That would be neat. But I think the screenwriters, directors, producers were just lazy and I'm sure Crichton liked the money.

The Israeli government is about to pass a law mandating the death penalty, only for Palestinian prisoners. Mass execution by hanging, solely on racial lines. This is apartheid and the next step in the genocide of Palestinians, already systematically tortured in Israeli prisons.

We can only hope that it "mandates" the death penalty.

For most National Parks, there is a book that describes various deaths that took place in each park. Death in Yellowstone is one (horrible tales of people boiling in the thermal pools or eaten by grizzlies.). I find these and read before going somewhere. Those are manuals of what not to do. Sometimes, people just had bad luck. But mostly, the deaths were dumb and avoidable. I may become a victim of Mr. Darwin yet. Better than sitting at home getting old.

One time my daughter and I hiked up the trail past Lake Louise in Banff. At the beginning, next to the lake where the trail is a paved path, was a group of people learning ropes to descend a cliff. Novices and trainers I'm guessing. One guy was in trouble about 40 feet up, and was starting to shout. Maybe his strength was failing and he thought he was going to fall. I felt kind of bad for the guy. I don't know how they got him down, I assume there is some obvious or established way of doing that.

This resulted in our entire internal codebase being publicly exposed including thousands of files with every agent command, all system prompts, the complete query engine, Undercover Mode, Bypass Permissions Mode, and our internal telemetry configuration.

I take full responsibility. I genuinely believed the safeguards Claude Code had built for me would be adequate and it was a serious miscalculation on my part.

The ones making a deal now are the ones who are willing to accept not having the IRGC control them, having neighboring countries not invade them, being paid retail for their oil on the open market, and only having to worry about governing in a manner to keep the populace from executing them out of hand like their name was Ceausescu.

As I said this morning, you or I can't stop paying taxes because it's taken out of our paychecks.
But when Alberta stops sending tax payments to Ottawa, what are they going to do? Send troops?

Trump Begins Negotiating With Iranian Leadership Via Ouija

256 >>Amen. He has taken a big risk. I don't think he is playing. My pearls are not clutched.

Sometimes I think there's a tendency to think Trump is some kind of actor or cartoon figure because of his personality. To be honest, I didn't he was really serious when he first entered the race in 2015. I was wrong on that one. Bigly.

And then they decided to crush him and everyone around him. Then they stole his reelection. Then they tried to throw him in prison and bankrupt him. Then they tried to kill him. Twice.

He knows better than we do what the stakes are and more importantly what the situation is in Iran right now. And all he does every single day is fight. Why would anyone think, yep, he's right on the verge of victory so this is exactly when he's going to blow it?

Besides, he's turned Hegseth into a machine and he's got to keep feeding him.

1. Alberta doesn't recognize that court. They're independent.
2. Come get them. China can't do shit.
3. All it takes is one country to recognize their independence and it's game on. That one country would be the US.

President DJT has thrown down a marker to all of the European states - the elite class vs. representative government resolution will be, in most cases, a bloody affair.

Posted by: JackStraw at March 31, 2026 09:58 PM (viF8m)

Yeah, but he needs to be careful with that, too. Our military is nowhere near what it was even in the 1990s from a personnel standpoint, we have a lot of aging platforms that will need to be replaced, the ones we do have are WAY too small in number for the demand placed on them, and the reality is that we really need to get serious about ramping up our drone warfare capabilities.

You still need a mixed force (a big reason the war in Ukraine is mostly a stalemate is because neither side has air superiority), but we have a whole generation of Zoomers that grew up with dual stick video game controllers in their hands. Do a deal with Zelensky to provide him with Patriots in exchange for drones, and we can get moving on that. And lets get real, Ukraine is proving itself to be FAR more capable of being a decent ally than western Europe right now. They're fighting a brutal four-year war and STILL sent dozens of advisors and equipment to the Middle East to fight back against Iran's drones.
