Paris at night, Brassai

Finally, someone impressed by magic.

Dogs are happy to see their rescuer again. Lost dog reuinted with master. The dog starts crying with happiness.

Well dressed puppies.

Dogs sometimes think they're playing a game when really they're being little criminals.

Puppy "helps."

Big hike in China.

Dog is a mudder.

Boeing 747 trailing contrails, or, as Tucker Carlson insists, chemtrails.

Dog brought a dog to a cat fight.

27 In case it wasn't answered on the prior thread, no, senators do not require photo ID to vote. The Capitol Police memorize the new senators (assume it's the same on the high school, er, House side, dunno = plus they wear those little pins on their lapels) once they're seated after elections. Of course they've long known the incumbents, so it's not that many new faces to get to know every two years.

Senators can enter the floor from any of 3 or 4 doors. Personal and committee staff come in through one door off the big lobby next to the VP's office. This staff shows Senate photo ID to access the floor.

Voting in the Senate is from the clerk recognizing a senator who's seeking recognition for this purpose, senator then calls out aye or no. It can happen from anywhere on the floor, as long as the clerk sees them. No additional ID required.

This is all as it was forever, dunno if changed since I was there.

Posted by: rhomboid at March 26, 2026 08:12 PM (U/Byj)

28 Remember when Oregon rolled out the Real ID the first time and then didn't do it because they couldn't figure out how to not issue it to illegals while registering them to vote?

I don't actually remember that but it doesn't surprise me. I got the one step down version, which is probably the illegals loophole, because I am not going to fly anywhere.

38 One amusing (to me) Senate voting story from waaay back (late 80s). A federal judge was being impeached (yes, it actually used to happen). The accused sits in the well of the Senate during voting (essentially, the voting of the jury).

As usual I was sitting right next to one door, the one most used by senators entering/leaving the floor.

In walks Dave Durenberger (R-MN) - always a cheerful and friendly sort. He walks in just to the first row of senators' seats, stops, and gets the eye of the clerk. Clerk doesn't say anything. Durenberger smiles and gives a forceful "thumbs up" (= aye). Defendant (judge) slumps a bit. Sad!

Presiding officer reminds all that in impeachment votes, senators vote from their seats, and that the votes are "guilty" or "not guilty". Durenberger rushes to his seat, is recognized, stands up, "guilty". Then rushes off the floor back to whatever he was doing.

52 House uses cards and machines. Pretty sure Senate still uses "open outcry" voting, with the clerk recognizing senators. Guess I'd have to watch C-SPAN to confirm. But I doubt such a renowned and prestigious club would use something tacky like credit card machines to vote.

Recall the infamous (truly) thumbs-down McCain (spit) vote on partial O-care repeal.

Thumbs up/down was not uncommon. The clerk calls out the vote, "Mr Ace, aye". Rarely there are "present" votes where conflict of interest considerations call for it (in the senator's estimation, not a rule).

But my favorite were Bob Dole's hand signals. His most famous was the "T" time-out signal he would use to have a quorum call. Presiding officer understood the signal and proceeded with the standard "The lack of a quorum having been suggested, the clerk will call the roll".

I’d like to congratulate two time Congressional candidate loser Laura Loomer, MIGA foreign op Mark Levin, and Neocon murdering psycho Senator Lindsey Graham for leading Republicans into slaughter going into midterms.
Your incessant lies to President Trump have destroyed all faith in the GOP.
I’d also like to remind everyone that when I led the party on the campaign trail fighting for America First in ‘22 and ‘24, all the GOP did was win win win!
But after Trump called me a traitor and said he would destroy me for releasing the Epstein files, I refuse to fight for Trump and the Republican Party that defends the Epstein class, wages pointless foreign wars, and pursues America LAST.
I never changed, Trump and the GOP betrayed their voters and took in the trash we threw out of the party.
Loomer, Levin, and Lady Lindsey are the BEST political consultants the Democrat Party could ever imagine!!!

What sells it is how they interact with one another. Without spelling it all out, without long asides or expositions, we get the alienation of all the Free People from each other shown clearly. Hobbits are a joke, dwarves and elves have bad memories of each other, yet everyone understands what is at stake.

176 Thursday, the Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission(FMC), Commissioner Laura DiBella, said they are closely monitoring a surge in inspections and detentions of Panama-flagged ships at Chinese ports—actions that appear to go well beyond normal port state control practices and may be tied to escalating tensions between Beijing and Panama.

The developments follow Panama’s decision earlier this year to strip Hong Kong–based CK Hutchison Holdings of its long-standing concessions to operate the Balboa and Cristóbal container terminals at either end of the canal.

177 mindful, wildfires are my greatest fear. For anyone rural, remember to donate to your local fire department. If they are volunteers, they may not get much local funding. Depends on the area.

Ban the judge as a security risk.

Lock him up.

180 Just wait until Boesberg blocks Trump's EO paying TSA agents.

He may motivate some underpaid TSA agents to form a vigilance committee to appeal his decision.

Mary,

We already have red flag warnings here in March.

We've had no snow and no rain. It's so dry here. We do have some trees leafing out. They must have deep roots because we ain't had any moisture.

I'm terrified of wildfires too.

182 I remember thinking Jorma Kaukonnen must be some large Hawaiian, playing slack key guitar.
He’s of Finnish extraction, among other things. His dad was a State Department guy, so he grew up in DC. Got involved with guitar during the Folk Scare in the early 60s and gave lessons to make ends meet.

Then he got involved with Jefferson Airplane. He’s a lefty though not obnoxious about it. There’s some excellent YT videos of him giving guitar lessons for many tunes, including his own. The Water Song is really fun to play, he’s an excellent instructor.

CBD,

You are correct, as always. I should have done that.

The neighbors don't have anything to do with anyways, lol.

I will follow your advice.

South Carolina needs to pray Mace isn't the next governor.

186 81 I was just reading Joe Kent is possibly going to testify in the Charlie Kirk murder for the defense. I live in Washington state and I voted for the fucker twice. Yes there is a real possibility of this degenerate POS fouling the jury pool.

I dont know what he could testify to from personal knowledge that would be relevant.

188 Is the trial in SLC? If so I can see Kirk’s killer getting a hung jury. SLC is Berkeley but with snow.
