"Just trying to understand what is going on" is not a phrase you want to hear over and over and over from a Supreme Court justice during a hearing. But that's what you get when you get a DEI hire elevated to the Supreme Court. That is the upside with Justice. Jackson. The downside is she's probably going to be there 40 years.

The long-running court case by Sony and the global music cartel against the internet and free people everywhere, represented here - somehow - by Cox Communications, has met an end. (CBS)

Meta, after the New Mexico and California verdicts, is facing a very challenging future. Youtube is in that same situation but to a lesser extent. Apparently there are hundreds of other cases pending around the country get into the same territories of product liability and safety.
While I am not a big fan of social media and have mixed reactions from a libertarian perspective to these verdicts, a couple nags put me on the plaintiff side here. My somewhat casual understanding of the Gen z tech users Is they are increasingly fed up with technology, especially the Doom Scroll paradigm, a design that is clearly intended to keep one engaged. To address this, there are now products, such as stripped down smartphones, that explicitly limit the amount of smarts they do have and there is also a movement towards using paper calendars and journals. These indicate that culture and consumer markets instinctively understand that social media is riddled with product liabilities. It makes me want to get my voice back in shape and buy a microphone -- to record myself and play it back for side-by-side comparison -- and see how close I can get to Eric Burdon's style! I bet I could get at least 90% there, with enough practice. I have a rather extensive collection of DVD's/Blue Rays, which I like and if I passed tomorrow, I bet they would end up in the trash. (not that I would care at that point) Unless St. Peter allows them.
I find if just comforting to have a hard copy of my favorite movies. Sure I got fast internet, and they brag that I could download a movie in a minute, but its just not the same. LP's I got some that I bought when an early teen I belonged to the Columbia Record Club and my dad gave me hell when he got the bill. But you get a free record once in awhile I'd tell him. He wasn't impressed. Hard to cancel also. And never could remember to send that card back that I didn't want the selection. At 14, I had other things to worry about. Posted by: Puddleglum We are of a similar demographic and I went the other direction. My entire music and video collection is digital as is the bulk of my reading library. The trigger for this was having to manage them, meaning space and such, with something I just didn't want to deal with anymore. I do miss having physical media from time to time. The decision to own physical media or not is radically different though then the dopamine that comes from social media engagement. One of my favorite examples of this was when I lived in a major downtown city. I had to back out of my apartment building onto a street that led directly to a freeway. This meant I often got trapped blocking the sidewalk for some minutes which would at times irritate the pedestrians. Except one guy. He was so engrossed with his phone he walked right into the side of my car and knocked himself on the ground. He popped right up and started screaming and yelling at me and waving his arms. It was all rather hilarious. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at March 26, 2026 04:47 AM (glnUu) 21

Around and Around (1964) The early Animals recordings showed them to be a supremely competent cover band of American rock and roll and blues. I'm not sure where they fell apart, probably from a lack of songwriting talent and endless personnel changes. https://youtu.be/VSKbgpOzt2Q Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at March 26, 2026 04:54 AM (glnUu) 23

I should have clarified: SC Rep. Ralph Norman should have framed the story better. I wasn't asking you to be my research assistant.... I'll put that full grok explanation in a new comment box below. Posted by: m at March 26, 2026 05:07 AM (+YA9H) 34
here's the grok explanation:
Rep. Ralph Norman's post highlights a 2026 Eid al-Fitr procession video in Holy Islamville, a rural South Carolina Muslim enclave founded in 1983 by African-American converts, framing it as evidence of unchecked Sharia law infiltration in his district rather than a routine religious observance. Holy Islamville, home to about 35 families following Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani's teachings, has endured terrorism allegations since the 1990s but local reports describe residents as law-abiding U.S. citizens who operate schools, businesses, and farms while upholding constitutional protections for their faith. The post promotes Norman's involvement in the 2025-launched Sharia Free America Caucus, co-founded by Reps. Self and Roy to prioritize U.S. law over Islamic jurisprudence, eliciting replies that range from calls to ban Sharia to defenses of religious liberty and criticisms of the post as outdated fear-mongering. Posted by: NR Pax at March 26, 2026 05:38 AM (NR6c1) That was basically Apple's argument for 99-cent MP3s (DRM-free) on iTunes: if we make music tracks easy to buy in a format that's easy to use, many people will do that instead of pirating. And they were correct, and Amazon did likewise; and bands went back to vinyl albums, but with a free download code for the digital tracks. And it worked, not like before with jackpot winners left and right, but people could make a living. Now it's Spotify ruining the revenue model for musicians, not illegal filesharing torrents. The case was practically irrelevant by the time SCOTUS ruled. Posted by: SciVo at March 26, 2026 05:56 AM (Sy6m/) Posted by: Marcus T at March 26, 2026 05:57 AM (d9i2R) 50

Generally they were not the majors, but there were a few, usually Shell. Regular E10 here is running about $3.49-$3.59, with a few $3.39s here and there, and GB reported those accurately.

Well, modern cars do that (with expensive emissions systems) just fine. We've reached the point of diminishing returns on that. I usually see close to 10%+ mpg when I use E0. Since E0 usually sells for more than 10% over E10, it doesn't really make financial sense, but I still do it when I can. Anyone having an issue with the HQ when you click on comments/continue the site goes to an ad showing women roofers? Only happens on my iPad and has been occurring since the blog went down last week. The dark times.

@87/neverenoughcaffeine: I think that's when you hit "Continue" (but not "Comments") if you're using a browser without an ad-blocker.
I saw this when accessing the site with my phone out in the wild (not on my home network where I have multiple layers of ad-blocking built in), and I was using the chrome browser. Try the "Brave" browser, or use Firefox with the uBlock Origin extension. I was out west last week using my Chromebook with the Chrome browser. I had to learn not to use "Continue" link.

A chunk of my route will be on old Federal highways, not Interstates. The slower speed will help my mpg, but stops and slowdowns in small towns won't.

You're effectively burning the nation's topsoil, ruining engines, taking land out of production which could be feeding livestock, and creating huge subsidization structures to keep it all in motion. Do you need more justification than that? Posted by: Congress at March 26, 2026 07:07 AM (3arSl) 99

Interstate highway driving has been a chore for a number of years now, with the merge lane maniacs driving past a stopped lane of traffic to force themselves to the front being my newest pet peeve. Federal regs. Oxygenates are required. MTBE was used, but contaminates groundwater. Banned.
Ethanol is the replacement oxygenate. Near as I can tell it’s a government mandated example of “the solution to pollution is dilution”. Posted by: Common Tater at March 26, 2026 07:18 AM (iLmv1) 107

taking land out of production which could be feeding livestock
—— That part isn’t true. Not even a little bit. I’m no fan of ethanol in gasoline, but the remainder from ethanol production is turned into distiller’s dried grain, or DDGs. Fed to livestock, same as it always was, just minus the starch. Posted by: Common Tater at March 26, 2026 07:23 AM (iLmv1) 109

The “justification” for ethanol is simple - it’s Chuck Grassley’s personal grifting scheme, and he and his wealthy constituents make a hell of a lot of money from it. But he does a lot of other good things in the senate, and Iowa is important in national elections, so we agree to let them rape the country in exchange for their support,

Known as late zipper merging. It seems that if done correctly, it is the most efficient method of managing traffic flow. "If done correctly" means drivers in the through lane are paying attention and allowing space for merge lane autos to move over, not being assholes by blocking them. When that was forced on us in CA, I remember the chattering class giggling about how we right wing nutjobs were spreading doom and gloom over it. And when the nutjobs were proven right, it was radio silence from those people. I just remember how it cut my car's mileage by a considerable amount.
