Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Surprise! Mitch McConnell's Groomed Punk John Thune Preparing Failure Theater Production of "We Tried to Pass the SAVE Act But Goshdarn It We Just Didn't Have Our Ducks in a Row"John Thune announced that he had a very smart masterplan for passing the SAVE Act. He would -- get this -- not pass it. Brilliant! Part 2 of the plan is that he promises -- pinky-swear -- he will then add it to a bill via reconciliation. Except... you cannot add non-budgetary matters to a bill through reconciliation. See, the process is called Budget Reconciliation. Measures must have an impact on the budget (supposedly, to reduce the budget) to be added via Budget Reconciliation. So his smart masterplan for passing SAVE by not passing it is doomed to fail, and in fact, is designed to fail. The Senate Parliamentarian will rule the SAVE Act is not germane to the budget -- as everyone knows in advance -- and John Thune will pretend he never thought of that and gee willickers guys, if only you send him more money he could hire better staff to tell him obvious things like this!DataRepublican (small r)If you remember, Mitch McConnell routinely tanked bills that the conservative voting base demanded, but he would tell us that he got us the next best thing to actual legislation -- he got the Democrats to vote "no" on the bill, which is worth more politically than actually winning. John Thune is now selling this snake oil, too.

I got this willowed from the last thread but it may still apply generally here:
I've been thinking for a long time that if there were a true forensic audit of voting - more specifically, vote counting - we would come to realize that deep blue states were actually red. I base this on nothing more than a common sense realization that when one party has iron-clad control of the counting process, it should come as no surprise that that party continuously wins. Not even a variation but a clear example of Stalin's dictum in play. It's a shame we don't have an institution - like The Press - that makes this one of their investigative goals. And conspiracy minded as I am wont to be, I suspect that they would stampede each other to death doing this investigation if it were Republicans in control of the vote counting process. My concern from the start is that if they finally did pass the SAVE act, they would only do it so late that it would not apply to the midterms.
I think that is their fallback. Even if it passes today, there is sure to be multiple nationwide injunctions against it. The dems will hold it up until they can undue it next term. Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at March 25, 2026 01:43 PM (FrseG) 44

It is most likely that the Senate Parliamentarian is a convenient (and reliable) foil for the GOP-e senators in their attempt to deep-six the Save America Bill. So, I've been searching for, you know, actual news about where the SAVE Act is.
And all I see is, "The Senate is expected to vote on it." and "Trump wants it passed with DHS funding." and "Thune has a deadline until the Easter recess." Watching Thune's bit of presser there, he's not talking about up and down reconciliation votes. He's talking amendment votes on the SAVE Act. So, we're still in the middle of amendment-o-rama, which means debate continues. I understand the need and desire to keep up pressure, but this is just...the Senate operating on its own timeline which is slow. We haven't even had a great blowup like the Parliamentarian saying that they couldn't vote on it, or anything. Just another bit of evidence that the advice to ignore the Senate until the final vote is probably pretty solid advice. 72 So, I've been searching for, you know, actual news about where the SAVE Act is.
I've always said that the GOP has their own version of voter fraud that keeps their safe seats very safe.
Sure, they lose national elections, and the occasional Senate races in red states (GA), but they don't care about that. What they care about -- and the only thing they care about -- is keeping their safe seats safe. They do that with their own versions of voter fraud. The SAVE act would make that harder to do. So they don't want it. Posted by: Elric The Blade at March 25, 2026 01:56 PM (iFTx/) 100

Not even 98% of Democrats supported Obamacare--but the Dems broke any rule necessary to ensure it passed. 148 Nope.
Majority Leader can fill the tree with empty amendments, thus there is no substance to waste time debating on each amendment and eating up time that could just be used to vote on passage. I personally witnessed Harry Reid do it dozens and dozens of time, in person. The GOP allowing the Ds to offer amendments is not necessary for anything. There is of course no excuse for Thune here, as pointed out (for weeks now) by many, including here today. Recall several weeks ago he claimed *there wasn't time to do a real talking filibuster*. Uh huh.
But something important that's been obvious, if still stunning, for years: there is no politics any more. Putting senators on the record via amendment votes (primarily) used to be, indeed, important. It was the major raw material for campaigns, ads, themes, etc. It was often painful to watch up close, as I did for years as a staffer, but the purpose was at least clear. And it mattered. Votes on big issues actually mattered. Now - on the Dem side - it simply doesn't matter, at all. Brain-dead, tribal, mindless and ignorant Dem voters don't know, understand, or even care about real issues. They live in an imaginary cartoon world created and nurtured for them by the (still dominant, of course) "press". On the GOP side there are many tribal dumbed-down voters, but the % is much smaller. Trump is president because on the GOP side, it's at least possible for voters to rebel, change course, etc. Posted by: rhomboid at March 25, 2026 02:14 PM (U/Byj) 173

And in the same vein, the GOP offered the Dems a ridiculous "compromise" on their DHS funding block. GOP will leave out a key part of DHS funding (ERO) - plotting to put it back in the next reconciliation bill.
The Dems are blocking funding for, literally, homeland security, during a war with the largest terror-sponsoring state in history, following 4 years in which they threw open the borders to foreign operatives (in itself a security disaster that's unprecedented). And they can get away with it. Because their voters are that ignorant and stupid and tribal. AND because there is no politics. The GOP has these pathetic little mumbling comments like Thune on Dems explaining their opposition to voter ID. Actual politics would be a massively aggressive public campaign to savage the Dems for endangering the country, plus retaliation - threaten to cut precious Dem programs by 50% unless full DHS funding is provided, now. But GOP voters with few exceptions simply refuse to send serious or useful reps to Washington. And almost never dump them after they've shown their (worthless) colors. Eyepatch McCain recently being an extraordinary exception. Posted by: rhomboid at March 25, 2026 02:19 PM (U/Byj) 199

So the GOP lacks the will to actually do any politics on the DHS shutdown, refuses to even try to make their enemies pay any price, but instead comes up with a pathetic concession - openly claiming to have a work-around in the future.
What if Mitch (or several other GOP fossils) drops dead tonight (he'll be replaced by a Dem, immediately)? What if one of the idiots - Tillis in his kamikaze phase, the loathsome POS Murkowski, the pathetic Collins, et al - change their minds? Then no work-around via reconciliation. https://dmtn1.com/iran-issues-warning-to-us-naval-forces/ Posted by: Digital Media Time News at March 25, 2026 02:33 PM (zCyRU) ======== It's a strange thing - The MSM informs us that Iran had a brilliant pre-conflict contingency plan for 16(?) commanders to act independently in case the US took out their national leadership and the communication nets. Now we are being told to believe that there is a central authority speaking for the entire country. This is based on pre-recorded video posted on the internet. Including cardboard-cutouts with photographs taped to the cardboard. I wonder how many of those possibly "independent" commanders are ready to deal? Give them a deadline?
