The rescue was an Easter miracle. The enemy was large and violent. The rescuers were brilliant, strong, decisive and as cool as anyone can be.
-- President Donald Trump

Bravery never goes out of fashion
-- William Makepeace Thackery

But the bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it.
-- Thucydides

Where all your rights become only an accumulated wrong; where men must beg with bated breath for leave to subsist in their own land, to think their own thoughts, to sing their own songs, to garner the fruits of their own labours...then surely it is a braver, a saner and a truer thing, to be a rebel in act and deed against such circumstances as these than tamely to accept it as the natural lot of men.
-- Sir Roger Casement

There is a certain enthusiasm in liberty, that makes human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.
-- Alexander Hamilton

I love America. American Exceptionalism...all 250 years of it... is a power that is unrivaled in the world. But I cannot remember a time during which I was more proud of my country and being an American than right now. Our magnificent armed forces, made up entirely of the American people, morphed from a pathetic, woke, mess of a force just a few years ago, into a cohesive group that is entirely focused on one thing: destroying our enemies in defense of our nation. They are magnificent, and represent the highest ideals of our great country.

And here's the other side!

We aren't the only culture that loves its pets! This is in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Great place, and absolutely huge. Wear walking shoes! Although there is a great pub about a five minute walk down the street, so all will be rewarded with a pint of a delicious English cask ale.

10 Suffer from Premature ONT?

"Are you tired of hitting 'Post' before your brain has finished loading? Do you suffer from sudden, uncontrollable urges to share your unfiltered thoughts with the entire internet? You may have Premature Postulation.
Millions of Americans experience embarrassing early posts every day. But now there's help.

Ask your doctor if Premature Postulation is right for you.
Premature Postulation is a once-daily tablet that helps you wait… just a little bit longer… before you regret what you said online.
Side effects may include:

Actually thinking before you post
Fewer late-night “why did I say that?” moments
Sudden bursts of self-awareness
And in rare cases… dignity

Warning: Do not take Premature Postulation if you are currently experiencing a hot take, political rant, or strong urge to argue with strangers.

Premature Postulation: Because some things are better left in the drafts.

Ask your doctor today if Premature Postulation is for you.
Results may vary. Not approved for use while drunk, angry, or extremely online.

From last thread:
>>
Publius, how much navigation can be manually performed by the Orion crew? The Apollo missions could get aligned with a sextant and stars and the rest of it, in a pinch. They wanted to be able to get home again one way or another. Independent of Mission Control, if radio comms were lost, or the Soviets jammed frequencies, or the computer horked.
--------------------

Apollo *required* manual navigation alignment. They had to get their gyro angles manuall reset ever so often and to correct for drift. Think of this as sighting stars to get their own XYZ axis reference properly aligned.

With Orion, it's all automated. Now, I don't know for sure, but I'm certain they would be manual contigency procedures they were trained in if the system failed. But otherwise, manual alignment is not needed.

129 April 6th, 1924, marked the start of the US' attempt to circumnavigate the world by aeroplane.

Four US Army Douglas World Cruisers on that date took off from Seattle. All the navigation they had as via dead reckoning as there were no radios or navigation aids. Two of the four planes would complete the epic journey - Chicago and New Orleans. Two would be lost attempting the heroic effort- Seattle and Boston, all the crews survived.

The planes might have been US Army but the Coast Guard and US Navy would be on hand in planning and support. So this was a fully American effort as ships, personnel, and equipment would be scattered across the globe for this effort.

102 years later, we have witnessed Artemis II go back to the Moon.

A Colonel as WSO? Why?
Air Force Pararescuemen, also known as PJs, are the only DoD elite combat forces specifically organized, trained, equipped, and postured to conduct full spectrum Personnel Recovery (PR) to include both conventional and unconventional combat rescue operations. They use Blackhawks.

Instead, DoD sent Seal Team Six, B-1 bombers, C-130s, little birds. Huh. Why?

Near Isfahan, site of enriched uranium. Was something else going on with the mission?

I am so proud of every single one involved in this rescue or who helped prepare for it.

Millions of prayers answered on Easter Morning makes it more wonderful for the rescue of this man. The US Military no longer leaves anyone behind, like the previous nightmare in diapers.

286 Our magnificent armed forces, made up entirely of the American people, morphed from a pathetic, woke, mess of a force just a few years ago, into a cohesive group that is entirely focused on one thing

Ah, but you're wrong, CBD. Our "force" was never all that woke. It was still full to some extent with people who desire to go against the odds and do great deeds, slaying dragons and toppling tyrants. They weren't allowed to concentrate on that, though. They were stifled, but they were still there, just waiting to burst forth again.

Yes, there are still problematic folks within the ranks, and more than a few in higher ranks and positions. But if the force were truly chock full of wokies and Karens and commies, they never could have come back in one year.

No, these folks were in hiding within the military, waiting for their opportunity to go forth and do great things, once again. BZ, Hooah!, and Aim High!

It isn’t well known, but Commanders on the Space Shuttle took to installing a padlock on the hatch whilst in orbit. There was an incident with one of the foreign “mission specialists” who completely wigged out after the experiment he had been working on for years failed in space. Time is limited, and they had to move on to other things. He started talking in apocalyptic tones and concerning statements. Th extra gas mileage over the Regal's 22 (on regular) almost paid for the price difference. I never got to take the BMW on a real road trip; I'll bet I could have managed 35 mpg or more even at 70.

A good friend of mine (now deceased) was on the planning team for Son Tay. It was an incredible accomplishment given the technology and intelligence of the time. We got better with the bin Laden raid but still managed to step on our crank.
The difference here is those events had time to plan. This rescue had just hours to put together a plan and to execute. Sure, an overall SAR plan was in place but you don't know when or where someone goes down. This is where Americans shine.

Well, have fun for me as I have loved it since college! I think I've been to Westminster Abbey 5 times. They day the barbarians burn it down I will go a bit loco, as I was bad enough for Notre Dame.

Enjoy the window boxes! The first time I went, in college on an English Lit travel study, I enjoyed everything a bit too much from pubs. Brit men asked me to streak three different times (it was big then in the US). They'd rag at me about "Tricky Dick" and I ignored them because I voted for him. I rode a horse through Hyde Park and made a fool of myself. Many things happened over 3 weeks.

On the return flight through Atlanta a bunch of us did not hear our plane number as we were in a bar drinking. My parents said there was a big "Welcome Home" thing at the airport and seven of us did not get off the plane. This, right there, tells you what they put up with but still loved me anyway. We caught the next plane to be welcomed by irritated parents. In case you wondered, I wasn't fazed.

340 I think the dichotomy of the Soviet Union verus the West tended to keep a lot of the airy fairy types at bay. There was a visible demarcation between the systems.

Theirs was a form of government where you couldn’t even buy a toaster or a washing machine or a car that anyone would actually buy otherwise, but there was no choice in the matter.

You couldn’t decide to move somewhere else, or even travel, without permission. You couldn’t quit your job and get another, all these things required permission from the local police and Soviet authorities.

This kind of thing was one reason Sputnik frightened everyone. A lot of people didn’t think such a backward, fucked up society had the engineering chops to launch a satellite into space

Well, that and Tang at my grandparents later in that weekend of forced playing outside with cousins all day. We had gangs and picked on the out of towners from New Orleans.

They only let us inside if it was raining and for meals. This grandfather gave us Dentyne gum.Sugarless poisons early in life. Sometimes this grandmother gave me castor oil without explaining why. I think that's what it was. I was pale but am also blonde.

Between this and riding bikes through DDT clouds in summers made me who I am today.

If injured this grandmother sprayed methiolate or jet fuel on open wounds that nearly sent you into another stratosphere. I don't recall a warning of a bit of a sting...your pain went to 10 or 1l in a split second sitting on that bathroom commode.

420 Speaking of pets, I mentioned in the previous thread that my cat, Robert the Cat (TM), has taken to stomping on my chest and gut during the night at random times. I also mentioned that he's a bit weighty.

Commentors here, the best folks on the planet, suggested that he wants attention.

I get that. He thrusts he head under my hand at every opportunity, and is known to bite randomly when petting is not as immediate as preferred.

The thing is, I get no sleep, during the night and during the day because of these rituals. I understand the need for attention, but if I die and rot, I cannot pet a cat absent some occult rituals you might know.

How is this helpful to him?

429 Per Diogenes' comment and others above, many who were involved may recall one of my favorite sayings about the USSR back in The Glorious Days of Soviet Power and the Cold War.

"The Russians are incapable of anything, except conquering the world".

Which perfectly captured the weird hybrid the USSR was. Things deemed important by the state, i.e. mostly military things, were attended to, received resources, and generally were pretty good - at least good enough for purpose. Which made the USSR a formidable potential menace. Even while much of the country's society and economy was a sad mess.

Maintenance not in your culture or vocabulary? Make things that don't require a lot of maintenance but still work. ICBM accuracy not so hot? Use very large yield payloads that produce damage expectancy similar to more accurate systems. And so on.

Her teaching meant about as much to me as the 4th grade school hygiene class (and I missed Red Skleton because it was Tuesday). I got nothing from that. Or in 5th grade and my friend showing me Barbie and Ken. Spent my years from age 9 to 20 on a farm and still did not get it as I thought the cows and horses were playing. Speaking of Victor Glover, here's a clip of him the other day. The "Overlook Effect" is hitting him like a freight train:

https://is.gd/7cbJza

He's struggling for the words, but does a pretty good job. "Oasis in nothingness", or something close.

The Overlook Effect happens to most (but not all) astronauts at some point. It's a spiritual, transcendental type of experience. It happens in LEO, but the effect is even stronger when you get far enough from earth to see the Blue Marble effect, the earth as a small blue "oasis" against a black background of "nothingness".

It causes a bit of a Rodney King thing, "why can't we all just get along" too.

BTW as the rescue mission was taking place, B-2s from Whiteman struck targets in Tehran with MOP (massive ordnance penetrators, "bunker busters") believed to be the site of a large gathering of IRGC swinging schlongs. No scoreboard results released as yet.

521 The Soviets had accurate ICBMs, but they didn’t want the West to know this. The spooks thought they were having trouble with developing a small device related to guidance called an accelerometer.

They even sent guys to try and buy them in the U.S.A. This tracked with what US intelligence believed. We had SIGINT to hack their telemetry data, and saw they were having trouble, using say, 9 accelerometers where 3 would do. Obviously they were averaging the data to achieve some semblance of accuracy.

Turned out, this was all an elaborate ruse to fool Americans. They were pretty damn crafty.

Even though the odds are the same as the US becoming a serious country again in the next 20 years, currently the Dems have a bunch of idiots vying for the nomination, creating a small chance of no Dem emerging from the idiotic "jungle primary" system now used in this retarded paradise.

Extremely unlikely, but technically possible that if all the Dems stay in and split up their cretinous voters' votes in the primary, the two GOP hopefuls will emerge as 1 and 2.
