Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Night ONT - March 25, 2026 [TRex] Good evening Horde. The time has come for very random mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety. Did I mention the shenanigans were random? They are indeed random. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Leave Tucker, Megyn, Candace and anyone similar to threads elsewhere. Your reward is permission to periodically break into "Let's go Brandon" chants in the bar. [Top photo credit: B1 at RAF Fairford UK. Photographer unknown.]![]() [Photo credit: Maximilian Schönherr - Wikipedia] The origin of OK is disputed. However, most modern reference works hold that it originated around Boston as part of a fad in the late 1830s of abbreviating misspellings - that it is an initialism of "oll korrect" as a misspelling of "all correct."---------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() How many times can you put a balloon up your nose and pull it out your mouth? We bet not many of you have ever actually tried! But at Guinness World Records, we love celebrating unique talents just like this. On 29 August 2025, Malte Dünser (Austria), broke the Guinness World Records title for most balloons passed through the nose and out the mouth in one minute. This wild record attempt took place on the set of Guinness World Records - Die große Show der Weltrekorde, in Munich, Germany, in front of an audience. Malte managed to complete the trick 10 times, repeatedly threading the uninflated balloons through one nostril, and pulling them out through his mouth. There are photos at the link if you want to see more. I won't post them here. I mourn for the days when a Guinness World Record meant something more significant than stuffing balloons up your nose (not that there's anything wrong with that...). Caterpillar D11 bulldozer overhauls - this is a good video if you're into that sort of thing (actually, it is a pretty good video even if you don't care): New data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) shows more people are having gambling problems, especially with sports betting. Call to the state's Problem Gambling Helpline were up 121 percent in just a year, between 2022 and 2023, DPH announced Wednesday. So why has there been an increase? DPH said it's a result of improving access to helplines with public awareness campaigns and education statewide. "The increase in calls is a sign that people are feeling comfortable reaching out," Odessa Dwarika, the program director for the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health, told WBZ-TV. "If folks are experiencing harm but they don't know how to get resources or they don't feel comfortable getting resources, you're not going to see that bump in numbers."Up 121 percent on one year? Heavens! Must be a sign of major gambling problems and a success story for the state's gambling help hotline, right? Well... From Boston.com: Half of recent calls to state's gambling helpline were for help placing mobile sports bets, new report shows According to DPH's report, the helpline saw a surge in calls after sports betting was legalized. But of the 2,069 calls from February to June 2023, 1,043 were non-helpline calls, the report said. Those callers were "looking for technical support for their sports wagering mobile applications and platforms." The Office of Problem Gambling Services attributed the confusion to an increase in sports wagering advertisements, which list the helpline. The gambling help hotline became a tech support line for gamblers because online gaming companies were required to list the helpline in their ads? No matter how much you distrust politicians and hate the media, it is not enough. Never believe anything you read in a media story without checking for yourself. Mattel used to be THE toy company in my kidhood. Not only Barbie and Ken, but wonderful war and Western toys like six-shooter cap pistols modeled on the .45 Single Action Army revolver, a Winchester-style lever action rifle, and (I think it was Mattel) a rolling block rifle. They had a snubnose Detective's Special pistol too. They may also have made the Thompson submachine gun I had that would fire a roll of caps with one press of the trigger.
A little later came the Secret Agent X-7 series of toys, a camera that would transform into a gun, that kind of thing. Kurt Russell starred as a 13-year-old James Bondian agent in the TV commercials. Only Marx had as wide a range of products -- maybe even wider. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 25, 2026 10:15 PM (wzUl9) 47

The Mattel six shooters, the "Peacemaker" and snubnose, operated on much the same principles as the real guns. There were brass cartridges, into which you pressed the plastic bullet nose. You stuck the Greenie Stick-m Cap on the flat base of he cartridge. Then you loaded the cylinder; the two guns I mention actually had access doors, and the Peacemaker had an ejector rod.
I think both guns were double action -- not true to life, of course, in the case of the Western gun. But you could cock it single-action. Either way, when the hammer came down, the cap let off a satisfying bang with an aroma of gunpowder; the bullet flew out of the barrel to hit something or more likely to be lost forever; and the cartridge remained in the cylinder. No wonder I like guns. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 25, 2026 10:29 PM (wzUl9) Posted by: Don Black at March 25, 2026 10:30 PM (ZxPkt) 102

There is a persistent rumor, that Mattel for a time had a government contract to supply for the M16A1 rifle split plastic handguards.
Seems like this would be easy to prove by checking the records, suppliers and NSN or DLA info. I’ve read a couple accounts where veterans swore they saw the Mattel name stamped on them in the 1960s era. For their part Mattel would or should know too, through company archives, retired employees etc. Posted by: Common Tater at March 25, 2026 10:34 PM (5dzh4) 124

Grandson has Hotwheels from 3 generations: my baby brother, his uncle & father and new ones. Over 50.
My Barbie is still in MS. Someone (a cousin? maid?) stole Skipper & Scooter and a really old Barbie that was my cousin's. I think Ken is there. I'm pretty ticked off because my mother claims she has no idea. Nor any idea where my Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, & brother's Hardy Boy's books are. She is not senile. She either let some cousin's kid's take what they wanted or I don't know. I forgive her, of course, but once I had our first granddaughter I was pretty excited to give my stuf f to her. No, they were not in the way, either, on the second floor and empty bedroom. I am now done with my selfish ways. They better not have been sold on e-bay (ok, I was not done). When we moved to the farm I entered 5th grade and met new friends. A good friend, even now and one of the nicest people ever, had older siblings. She taught me cuss words and with Barbie and Ken, sex. Imagine my surprise when I was older! Yes I grew up on a farm. Yes we had cows and horses, but I thought they were playing. Yes I was that naive and not pretending. And, yes, my husband had to explain some stuff to me. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at March 25, 2026 10:35 PM (WONhk) 126

On this day in 1966, one of my favorite Canadian musicians was born, Jeff Healey, the late great blues rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. When you see photos and videos of him, he had ocular prostheses, because he lost his eyes to retinoblastoma when almost one year old; at almost forty-two, he lost his life to sarcoma. But in-between, he played and sang like he knew what God made him for.
In this short set on a UK variety show, I like to think that the second song literally takes place after the first, with him strumming his guitar while watching the world from heaven. The bassist is very sweaty by then, and while it was probably just from the hot studio lights, it's amusing to imagine that it was from the pressure of filling such big shoes on the backup vocals, since the album version had George Harrison himself for that (and backup acoustic guitar). There is no danger, ever, of me shoving anything up my nose. I had sinus surgery at 19yrs due to gross and hideous chronic sinus infections. Mostly because I am allergic to tobacco and my exBFnotF roommate smoked all the time our first year in the dorm. The surgery is called bilateral antral windows, and was hideous when the packing came out and I vowed never again.
I have to sniff saline solution every night, which was probably a very attractive feature for my bf/husband who didn't seem to notice and I told him what I was doing. John M. Larrier@DefenseBulletin . 3h This is notable, as earlier today, news broke that Israel struck a key node for Russo-Iranian trade networks, the Bandar Anzali port on the Caspian Sea, striking C2 hubs, warships, and shipyard infrastructure. Additionally, to those who think that Russia sending drones back to Iran is foolish due to Iran being the original producer, Russia has onshored production for much of its Shahed supply during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, and such measures have allowed them to produce and field Shaheds at scale in a LSCO environment. -- Russia never puts all its stuff up front. My late brother used to play with his GI Joe and my Barbie family. Joe'd sometimes drive the pink convertible. WHICH IS ALSO MISSING along with GI Joe. I was super mad when I discovered all this about 2yrs ago.
My mother got a funny look on her face and was vague when I asked, sort of calmly. She's never lied to me that I know of, and perhaps thought I'd go ballistic. I would not because my grandchildren were there. I can see I'm not over it. The books really ticked me off as they were also mine and brother's. Not hers to feel all Lady Bountiful and give away. In a bookcase minding their own business at the top of the stairs, so, again, not in the way. She either got a wild hair to share or they were stolen. I will never know nor bring it up again. I told myself 100x that, "These are just things. You have your memories, all will be well." No. I saved them for my grands. Then I hear the materialistic preaching in my head again and try to behave. UGH We go home again in late May. IF my wedding dress box and hat have been opened, oh, boy. But what can you do? I will tell her, you betcha. That roaches got in and it's all ruined. Then slug some gin and move on. Something has gone on upstairs and it ain't ghosts, begorrah. I think it's her maid. She also gave her good friend who helps with the lawn and his wife full ok to wipe out the attic into a dumpster years ago. Which I did't care about. Someone took our stuff and got a bit of $. And may blessings be heaped on their heads if they needed the money that bad. I guess.
