Overnight Open Thread [03/23/2026]

That is a bar in West Yellowstone, Montana. Not quite as impressive as the bar from Saturday night's ONT, but what it lacks in aesthetics, it more than makes up for in food and booze quality. The elk chop is superb, but the bourbon list is incredible, especially considering the location, or maybe it is exactly why the bourbon list is so impressive!

It also has a bear spray rental kiosk in the lobby, and that might make it the best bar in America!

It's easy to ignore places like this, but this is America, where appearances can be deceiving. There is great...everything...to be had across our wonderful country, and to the disgust of the elites in the cities, a lot of that greatness is far outside of NYC and Chicago and Los Angeles.

Not just food -- although I would argue that the best American food is found outside of the cities -- but tradesmen and teachers and contractors and dentists and clerks in stores and...

There was this poor, pious old guy who hears that the Pope is going on tour and will be parading through his city. He was very excited that he might get a chance to meet the Pope, shake his hand, and maybe even receive a blessing from the Holy Father! So he decided to make a plan: perhaps the Pope would want to meet the richest man in town! Figuring that if he were somehow able to appear wealthy, and stand by the road, the Pope would see him, be impressed, stop, and he would get to shake the Pope‘s hand.
So this poor old fella went out and bought a nice new expensive suit that he couldn’t really afford, a sharp fedora and wingtips, and on the appointed day, got up early, put on his new clothes, hit the barber shop and got a neat comb-over haircut, then made his way to the edge of the street where the Pope would soon be passing by in the vaunted Popemobile.
After what seemed like an eternity, our newly-outfitted guy finally spots the approaching motorcade, and he begins to get all tingly with anticipation. As the Popemobile gets closer and closer, it suddenly stops right in front of him. The Pope climbs down, out of his vehicle, walks toward him, but without even looking at him, walks past toward a scruffy little dude nearby, sitting obliviously and leaning against a wall. The little guy is wearing nasty, dirty clothes and is obviously stinking drunk. The Pope, arms folded, stands silently over the drunk, who finally looks up. The Pope unfolds his arms, slowly leans down and whispers something to the drunk that nobody can hear. Then smiling stupidly, this drunk gets up and hobbles down the street as the Pope makes his way back to his Popemobile, to the roar of the nearby crowd.
Our friend is momentarily confused, but then it dawns on him: Of course! The Pope doesn’t want to meet rich people; he wants to meet downtrodden, poor people! So he goes to “Plan-B” and runs after the drunk guy. When he catches up to him, he offers to swap clothes (and shoes!) with him. Of course, the man immediately agrees. So they go behind a couple of bushes and proceed with their transaction. While he’s momentarily overcome by the stench of his new clothes, he tells himself that sacrifices must be made to get a blessing of the Holy Father, and off he runs after the slowly moving Papal motorcade.
He runs and runs, and finally catches up to the motorcade. He goes a little ways ahead, then stops and sits down just like the drunk guy did, to wait for the Popemobile to pass by. Sure enough, as it gets to him, it stops! He’s beyond excited as the Pope climbs down and walks straight over towards him. Just as before, with arms crossed and with a stern, pious expression, the Pope stands over him. After a few seconds, the Pope leans down in his face and quietly says,

“I thought I just told you to get the fuck out of here.”

25 How is everyone tonight? I've never been a patient of NeverGiveUp but I think I had the second best today. My dental appointment was awesome, very educational and she and I and her assistant had some great discussions. When I was a PC tech I would always educate my users on why what they were doing was wrong, and I appreciate that in other professions. I mean, it keeps you from making the same mistakes and makes you feel smarter. Always great.

You are so right. I was in the back edge of nowhere one evening and stopped to get fuel. I asked the clerk who had the best food in the area for a quick meal. She sent me to this place called "Suburban Drive inn"...out in the middle of nothing. The owner does the cooking, and he had a smoker and grills set up behind the rather shabby looking place...served up some of the best burgers I've ever had, fresh cut fries...I watched him dice the potatoes. It shamed all the fast food joints...in quality, quanity and price. Plus a good conversation with the owner while he cooked. He was a funny guy. Telling bad jokes all the while.

Now: #1 - MBA in Finance and retired at 41 - travels the world for fun with the fam. #5 went to Nuke school for the Navy and now works as the only non degreed employee at a hypersonic test lab doing projects his old man can't begin to comprehend.

206 Evening, CBD, and ONT Horde! Frabjous joy! I put 20 rounds through my little H&R Hammerless top-break .32 today, with nary a single hiccup. Finally got the new mainspring tuned right. Nice solid primer dents, and the trigger reset every time. I even hit some of the targets I aimed at.

My AR 9 mm carbine, not so fun. It keeps spitting out the ten-round magazines. Never did that with the 30's. so I suspect some devilry in the mag catch slots. But I have gotten the Gaialoop red dot dialed in pretty close; hit one of the hanging spoons right off the bat.

227 Home, shower, bed after babysitting all day & taking our 7mo old home up the mountain to her bed after her cereal, applesauce & bottle.

As I was putting her in her sleep sack thing (arms free always since birth), she made a machine gun sound & smiled. We are unsure what this means, but I think she was thanking us for being her slaves all day.

At the age where she throws toys and waits to see who will pick it up for her. Fake coughs. Rolls everywhere & almost crawling.
She also does a forehead to forehead sign of affection like the Coneheads on SNL. We're pretty crazy about all three of them, but THIS girl was God's great surprise of 2025 and wins all the baby prizes of the universe.

Since they are born I always light the gas fireplace next to where they have their bottles as they burp. They all mind meld it to come on and of course I do this for them. She cracks us up staring at the fireplace when it's not on and has figured out there is a remote.

If all babies were as easy as she is we'd over take islam in 20yrs as people would want ten. Puts herself to sleep having chats and chuckles. Wakes with a big smile when she sees you. She's our boss, & we are thankful she's here.

Dude don't have 2 nickles to rub together because he's a fucking retard, and the original stuff is obsolete and failing. Just the water lines, no drains. I'll do it in PEX. The shit is so cheap I can't believe it. 100ft roll is $26, and fittings are under $1 each. The place is a dump so we're going to go quick and dirty and run the pipe inside along the corner of the walls. No fucking way am I going under that piece of shit. It really needs to be burned down to the foundation. He's lucky I'm even doing it.

In my mind there are microscopic droplets (and sometimes possibly not microscopic when our sons were 4 and 2yrs old and racing each other) on the tp hanging the wrong way. Plus if someone does not close the lid to flush. And I don't want to get into other stuff right now before bed.

Therefore, as a lady, with the tiny bit of exposed tp the way I hang the roll, I fold that over and there you have it. Much better. I made all of this up and will remain unchanged.

When flying in a plane and flushing, always close the toilet lid, hold your breath, flush, grab a paper towel to open the loo door and get out as fast as you possibly can.

I still think it is weird that people wanted to be in the mile high club in there as ick. No thanks!

Well my years doing kitchens and baths was all encompassing. We worked with great plumbers and electricians, so I learned all that from them in first year or so, and you pickup other stuff. I had uncles in the home contractor business, my father knew it, and little by little you end up learning all of it. I could build a house from scratch. Everything but the foundation. Give me that and I'm good to go. My specialty was interior. Doors, windows, fancy moldings, custom wood work, floors, marble, tile, fireplace mantles with all the fancy shit, etc. There were breaks because of music, but I did it for long enough to learn it all. Pretty much like anybody who did it long enough.

Brass tees, a box of 25 is $20, a box of 25 elbows is $15. Brass, frigging brass. 200 feet of 1/2" pex is like $52. Anything in my house I would still use copper, because its already built, and any modifications might be 1 pipe worth of copper. If I was building new, yeah pex would save a fortune.

Start working with hand tools. You would crush those bottles like a tin can. Mrs B had an uncle who was a pain in the ass. When he would shake your hand he would squeeze really hard. It didn't bother me, but I used to be able to crush game controllers if I got pissed, my hand strength from years of tools was bordering on freakish. One day her uncle went to shake my hand, after years of me putting up with his stunt and I felt him squeezing and I said fuuuck it, and I clamped down, and I saw his knees buckle. He never did it again after that, he got the message. I will crush your bones. Seriously though, they have these little gadgets to build hand strength that work good. You should look into it.

I get that too. Sometimes if my posture is wrong and my wrist is bent too much my hand goes numb when playing the guitar, and it feels twice the size, and then it just goes to shit. Its a little worrying. Sometimes its in the shoulder, sometimes the elbow. Its probably from me sitting most of the time with it when the vast amount of my life was spent standing with a strap. If I grab a classical guitar my shoulder starts singing because its a deep body and my arm is not where it normally is with an electric. But yeah I definitely have some small degree of carpal tunnel probably.

In my area, Big Bear Lake. +7000 ft elevation and nice condo's and motels so you can be like civilized morons. (smile!) Just a 2 hour drive from most anywhere in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Three hours with traffic.

307 Tendons are little monsters. Haven't tried those little straps that pinch off the elbow nerve. But the wrist brace with the steel spoon helped things back to normal.

308 The hand numbness is especially frustrating when I'm *in the middle of* doing something. Like: when trying to install the transmission cooling line fitting to the trans, while lying under my old truck! Everything was slick with Type F, could barely hold the wrench anyway... reaching overhead and past/between a bunch of other shit... couldn't see thru the scratched-up old safety glasses... my hand and forearm going numb... poor lighting, couldn't *feel*

Very possible, because they are a bit hammered. I can't sleep on my right side. It lasts a few minutes and my shoulder goes nuts. there are time where the left one like to have its turn. I don't have any range of motion issues, but the shoulders aren't great. I think that might have happened from years of swinging a hammer, mostly up high like when nailing sheetrock to a ceiling before screw guns became popular.

312 I don't have any problems working on the bikes. My hands never give me problems. There are times though, like trying to start a nut in a tight spot for awhile they start to go numb, but its rare. Again, it could be wrist position. Some areas on a harley can be a bastard to get in, and my hands aren't small, so I got good with dexterity, but in small areas its a bitch.

I always watched my hands like a hawk because of guitar. Never really considered the shoulders though. My shoulders start to hurt when assembling the crank on a harley engine. You have to install a big timken bearing on the one shaft, and it has to go down about 3 inches, and its a press fit, but you can't use a press, so the tool threads on the end of the shaft and then you need a 1/2 drive ratchet to turn a big socket on the tool that pulls the bearing down. Its a shit load of turns and its a press fit. The jig to hold the flywheels steady is in a vice, and by the time the flywheels are standing up in it the ratchet ends up above your shoulders. By the time I'm done I feel it in the shoulder. Sometimes I'll stand on a small step stool.

317 If it's your acromial a steroid shot may do the trick. It did for me. Other side sleeping pain I put pillow/s under my rib cage and balance with pillows for my head and let the shoulder fall in the gap.

At wellll over 29, I've wound up.taking over an hour and a rube-goldberg level power tool kludge to accomplish a task that would have taken 10 minutes and a pair of pump pliers.20.years ago.
