The Prodigal Daughter

John Collier

Not a particularly good example of Collier's work (his execution of the female form is often superb), but there are a few interesting things going on, and the idea is amusing...

76 One of the few John Collier paintings without gorgeous nudes. (Sigh!)

Actually, I really like this painting. His use of shadows and low light is wonderful and sets the atmosphere. Not exactly the Biblical story of regret and redemption. The daughter's pose and expression is comfortably defiant towards her parents and society. That is further emphasized by her flamboyant dress. Her parents' poses demonstrate their surprise and their dark, conservative clothing shows the chasm between their lives and their daughter's behavior. It is very effective.

Maybe it's just me but this looks like it could be an illustration for a story in The Strand magazine circa 1890 but done with better talent.

Well, both, and the unfathomable love the Father has for his children. That the Creator of the universe would not just forgive a self-centered and indulgent son (as well as a self-righteous, performative son,) but dare to shame himself by *running* down the path to embrace and celebrate the return of wayward as having returned from death to life. Incredible. Deep. Moving.

Australopithecus - as the name suggests - was a southern ape. Sabertooth cats' range was in north Eurasia and north America. The 'pithecenes tended to be leopard chow (there's a famous child skull with their tooth marks).
Although the "super archaic" lineage in Neander/Denisovan DNA is intriguing. Someone took it from a Homo Erectus. There's your prodigal daughter right there. Wonder if she'd messed with an Asian orangutan yeti or two before finding a genetic compatible...

Are you guessing? It doesn't look like a wine glass.

You're right to question it — it's not definitively a modern wine glass. In John Collier's 1894 painting "The Prodigal Daughter" the object in her right hand appears to be a small stemmed goblet or chalice (likely a wine or liquor glass) — a shallow, rounded bowl on a short stem. Different viewers describe it as a goblet, cup, or chalice rather than a contemporary tall wineglass.

131 I zoomed in and didn't notice anything in her hand.

Neither did grok!

Her right hand is gripping the door handle (or knob), as if she's just entered and is keeping hold of it—ready to leave again quickly if the confrontation turns sour. This detail adds tension to the "problem picture" composition, emphasizing her independence and the uncertain reunion.

No other object (like a bag, fan, gloves, or accessory) appears to be in her right hand based on detailed descriptions and analyses of the work. The left hand isn't prominently described as holding anything either; the focus is on her overall stance and expression.

The painting is a classic Victorian-era "problem picture" that sparked debate about family, class, and the "fallen woman" trope. High-resolution images are available on sites like WikiArt, Art UK, or the Usher Gallery's collections if you'd like to see it for yourself

The Annunciation refers to the announcement made by the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear Jesus Christ, marking the Incarnation. This event is celebrated by many Christians on March 25th, known as the Feast of the Annunciation.

Sometimes I'm in the mood for a little romance though. The Steward and the King. Faramir closing the deal -

'Do not scorn pity that is the gift of a gentle heart, Eowyn! But I do not offer you my pity. For you are a lady high and valiant and have yourself won renown that shall not be forgotten; and you are a lady beautiful, I deem, beyond even the words of the Elven-tongue to tell. And I love you. Once I pitied your sorrow. But now, were you sorrowless, without fear or any lack, were you the blissful Queen of Gondor, still I would love you. Eowyn, do you not love me?

Obviously you have more at stake when you can be drafted, but it is interesting the argument was almost never, "This isn't worth the lives of a bunch of draftees" but quickly became "Supporting SV is wrong" - and this matters because even after Nixon ended conscription this held and the US didn't support SV with weapons and support in '75

On the plus side, if you replace all your brain trust with AI, your opposition only has to eliminate one entity to completely destroy your business. But it'll look real good on your quarterly stock report so you'll get a big bonus. Until people realize that having everyone unemployed means no one can buy your shit.

Not that complex. She comes home, still spouting, "You're still not the boss of me!"

Dad replies, "Go live in a ditch, then. You're not welcome here!"

Mom softens. "Well, if a baby comes, we'll take it in, hire a nurse to feed it till it's weened. In the meantime, enjoy your ditch, sweetie."

279 The Prodigal Daughter
John Collier

Chronical250

1903 The Prodigal Daughter and the Problem Picture
By Pamela Fletcher, Professor of Art History at Bowdoin College

In the early twentieth-century, the “problem picture” became a popular craze at the Royal Academy exhibitions. Deliberately ambiguous—and often slightly risqué—scenes of contemporary life, these pictures encouraged eager audiences to offer competing interpretations of the puzzles they posed, both at the Academy itself and in newspaper coverage and competitions.1 John Collier’s painting The Prodigal Daughter, exhibited at the Academy in 1903, was one of the first and most popular problem pictures, sparking conversations about new roles for women and the purpose of art in the early twentieth century (Fig. 1).

A young woman stands proudly—even haughtily—at the doorway of a humble parlour, decorated with old-fashioned prints and a modest round table. The daughter has interrupted her ageing parents at their evening reading, as the father looks up from his book and the mother slightly rises from her chair. ..." (More)

She should have had my mother. 🫣

I probably wouldn't hang this selection but I do like it.

Thanks

It’s 2026. No one is believing in a magic bullet theory.
Please just shut up. It’s frankly annoying and patronizing to keep claiming the evidence is OVERWHELMING.
If it’s so obvious, why not cease hiding behind microphones to spew propaganda and instead host open discussions?
. . . .
It’s so “overwhelming” we have gun that not even the bomb dogs could trace, a magical bullet that caused minimal damage to Charlie’s neck though it would have taken down a bear, and of course, a scene that was paved over the next day.
Just soooooo overwhelming.

288 Great news errybody - Variety is reporting that Stephen Colbert is co-writing "The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past". 14 years after the passing of Frodo, Sam Merry and Pippen set out to retrace their first steps of their adventure and are surprised to find Barliman Butterbur transitioned and is now Barliwoman Butterbur, meanwhile Sam's daughter Elanor, had discovered a long buried secret and (plot twist?!) outs Bilbo and Frodo's love affair.

TBF, I tweaked Variety's reporting on this, but not by much.
