Every now and then a grammar pedant wanders into the comments and is compelled to correct the title to "You're Welcome" (and aren't I so smart!).

This is all by way of demonstrating that they haven't listened closely to the show. Michael greats the listeners and ends his greeting with "... let that be your welcome." Then, at the close of the show, after his guest answers Michael's question, "What was tour favorite part of today's show?", he responds, "You are welcome!"

This is a long standing joke round these parts that started when members of a certain generation (whose name contains "nn" and "ll") insisted in online posts -- not necessarily done here at AoSHQ -- that the dirty clothes' holding device was called a "hampster". They were very insistent that the "st" was a necessary portion of the spelling.

My last new car purchase was in late 2008. I won't be buying a new car that can be remotely shut down, hacked, or that requires me to enter launch codes to run without the lane sensing/take-over steering controls and that has a screen when I can just look over my shoulder. Not to mention engine destroying shut down the engine at a stop light and disable some cylinders that the computer decides I don't need.

This makes a nice soundbite, but is a bit misleading. The computing power was on the ground[.i]. They had two completely identical computer rooms at the mission control building in Houston on two floors (to support simultaneous missions, as well as backup).

As far as onboard computing power, keep in mind they only had one computer. This was one of the first fly-by-wire systems. Modern fly by wire aircraft for example usually have three. So it had to be reliable.

Would you trust your Laptop not to crash or hork out running for two weeks straight? Maybe, but it’s a hell of a gamble.

55 There’s an interesting book called “Digital Apollo” that talks about the computing power brought to bear.

For a while they envisioned the astronauts having to make repairs in flight, the idea was they would carry duplicate spares of all the modules, tools, etc. This didn’t last too long, and they had also decided everything needed to be sealed against moisture, so no repairs possible.

They did some interesting things, they were concerned that (there was only one company making the IC they wanted to use, Fairchild) What if they go out of business halfway through the program? They would buy huge runs of a single IC and used the same component for ground support equipment as well.

The Launch Vehicle Digital Computer (LVDC) controlled the Saturn V rocket during launch and for the trans-lunar injection.

63 Today I need to settle on my route to Kansas in April and make my reservations. Yesterday, Teej advised a northwesterly route. Perhaps I can drive up to Memphis the first day, cut across Arkansas and run up I-49, then go west on US 54 and stop at Fort Scott, KS, on day two. Then west to US 75, north to Topeka, and over to Salina on I-75 for the third day.

A driving distance/time calculator on the 'Net suggests each leg should take about 6-7 hours, which probably really means 7-8. Day Three may be shorter.

Gas will be $$$. Leave it to me to do this when gas prices are rising.

Yes, that’s my point. They crunched the numbers on the ground, and read the data & updates to the crews over the radio. They actually had a fair bit of computing power and speed available (for the time) they could bring to bear.

When the Apollo 13 disaster struck, the government basically commandeered much of the nation’s civilian computing power time at myriad colleges and universities.

I'm looking at what uBlock Origin has blocked on YouTube as I pull up a playlist for some morning wake up music, and it's up to 103 requests (the number increases the longer you sit on a page). Ghostery is blocking several hundred API calls & Stats cookies as well.

I assume it's because every thumbnail from every video that YouTube is recommending is attached to some stats request.

They did indeed do a good work helping the student in a wheelchair due to a motorcycle accident. they're fun, but high risk. Twenty-eight times more likely to be killed on a motorcycle than a car. Rode one a while; never felt comfortable in traffic.

While some dedicated apps are very useful, the restaurant apps so you can order your food for example, the dedicated news & social media apps are created for one thing; to mine your information continuously, and generally without an ability for the user to block ads or tracking other than changing your settings on the phone manually (which most people don't do).

They make more money through dedicated apps than they do on their websites.

Was having some performance problems with a work laptop several years ago and e-mailed my then-boss, his boss, and a couple of tech guys.
