Pearl Harbor Attack, 7 December 1941

Photograph of Battleship Row taken from a Japanese plane at the beginning of the attack.

The explosion in the center is a torpedo strike on USS West Virginia.

Dog thief returns stolen property.

Dogs are confronted with their crimes.

Dog tried to steal a stuffed unicorn five times until the store decided it was cheaper to just give him the toy.

Dog figures out he's being bamboozled.

These Belgian Malinoises are little gang-stars. Especially the ones snapping their teeth like lunatics.

Dogs reuniting with service members.

These dogs are only guilty of stealing my heart.

Dog tries to frame his owner for... murder.

Press X to doubt, but...

This dog noticed that humans give paper to each other in exchange for delicious food so he went out to find his own currency.

That's counterfeiting.

14 You can see two of the attacking Japanese planes in that picture. At the head of Battleship Row is USS California which would settle on an even keel because many inspection hatches were open. Vestal is moored next to Arizona while aft of both ships is Nevada. In the lower portion of the picture that should be the cruisers Detroit and Raleigh along with Ogala. It seems Utah is already starting to capsize.

The only good part of the Pearl Harbor movie was the actual bombing. Brought that horrific moment to life in a very intense way. The rest of the movie with the torpid love story was ridiculous.

Would be good to finally do a new Pearl Harbor movie, if anyone has the guts to do one nowadays, to let the current youngins understand the importance of that day.

But you have to be wary also since the Japanese did a propaganda movie that covered the Pearl Harbor attack. They used detailed miniatures that even fooled some American military. The guy who did the miniature effects would later go on to do the same thing for Godzilla movies.

If you want some (somewhat ahistorical) Spitfire porn, check out "Piece of Cake" a six-episode series based on a somewhat over the top book about how the RAF adapted to war over the first year.

It uses a fake squadron ("Hornet Squadron") and because flying Hurricanes were extinct, they had to use late-model Spitfires. So right away two problems - wrong Spitfires, and Spitfires were never sent to defend France in 1939-40. Churchill held all of them back.

BUT, it's great drama and a very compelling portrait of a *unit* rather than individuals. Indeed, squadrons during that period took high casualties, so watching the unit change over time is very cool. Great cast (of course).

As already noted elsewhere, for a Japanese head of government to physically embrace a foreign head of state is I think unprecedented. After that, Trump could have said whatever he wanted. She has a crushing majority, so it really doesn't matter, and I bet that with China running 24/7 anti-Japanese propaganda slop, showing that Daddy Trump loves Japan probably is being well received.

109 It uses a fake squadron ("Hornet Squadron") and because flying Hurricanes were extinct, they had to use late-model Spitfires.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at March 19, 2026 08:23 PM (ZOv7s)

There is a very good old archaeology show Time Team where they have a weekend to dig at a site and find out all they can, throwing a lot of resources at it. One show they have is the crash of a Spitfire in France in 1940. It did take off in England. It went in nose first and the whole fuselage is packed into a few foot column of stuff.

They find a bit of the pilot's jacket - the chain to hang it up and present it to the man's brother shortly before his own death. The pilot's body had been recovered and buried in 1940.

192 California is going to rename Cesar Shaves Day as "Farmworkers Day". I wonder if there'll be a tie-in with Sukkot. Maybe there'll be an optional "Growers Day".

193 March 19, a day that will live in infamy?

194 It looks like Candice and her orbit grifters are getting cease and desist letters from Erika now. Hopefully with good legal backing / teeth behind it.

195 Fun Fact: The Japs were the inventors of the first killer drones.
Posted by: Rev. Wishbone

Not unmanned drones.
Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit

Rev might have been thinking of those..... but they sent incendiaries by balloon against the USA's west coast, too. Called "fu-go."

Anyway, @106 Anna Puma pointed out that there were "cruise missile" unmanned planes being made in 1918, so neither the kamikaze nor the fu-go were first.

196 I guess the idea is that if some teenaged lower-class British girl is already tagged then you can only groom her in season and you have a licence

197 Hard to imagine girls, young women, thinking it's their lot in life to be tagged and raped. But, how far away from being a tik tok girl or an only friends, etc. is it?

Wow!

I wonder what he would have thought of our subs sinking Iranian ships?

Other than cheering, of course.
