Florida Man's Crappy Plan

Man caught on camera stealing septic tank

doof-fla-man-septic.jpg

Surveillance video shows a man trying to steal a septic tank, then returning the next day and taking it after his initial attempt failed, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded on Feb. 27 to a reported theft at a construction site in the 21600 block of W. Highway 40 in Dunnellon, the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.

“As you can see in the surveillance footage, they discovered that Alfio Nocifora had a crappy plan to steal a septic tank on February 22 with his 2013 Toyota Corolla,” the post states.

The attempt failed when a Jeep Cherokee arrived at the scene and, according to the sheriff’s office, Nocifora fled. He then returned the next day with a rented U-Haul truck and successfully loaded the septic tank and about $2,500 worth of electrical pipe.

Deputies said Nocifora covered the U-Haul license plate and identification number with tape. A detective later identified him, obtained an arrest warrant, and deputies located him in Citrus County, where he was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said.

How high can YOU count?

Woman Spends 70 Days Counting Out Loud to 1,070,000, Breaks 18-Year-Old Record

Guinness has recorded some strange records over the years, and Favour Ogechi Ani’s record definitely ranks up there with the weirdest and most difficult of them. Starting in October 2025, the Nigerian woman spent 70 days confined to her home, counting out loud to 1,070,000.

Counting out loud might not sound like the most difficult thing in the world, but can you imagine doing it for up to 14 hours a day, 70 days straight? It’s the kind of monotonous repetition that could make a person go mad, but Favour Ogechi Ani was so passionate about counting and focused on breaking the 18-year-old record for the highest number ever counted out loud that she never thought about quitting.

“Honestly, it was tough, but my passion for counting kept me going,” Favour said. “I had a lovely team supporting and cheering me up, and it was fun despite the challenges. My determination to achieve this project was a burn-the-boats mission. I never thought of giving up for any reason.”

Starting on October 8th, Favour Ogechi Ani started livestreaming her daily counting routine on YouTube, which helped validate her record attempt. She also credits the people cheering her on as an extra motivating factor that kept her counting daily until December 16 of last year.

***

The old record, which had stood for a whopping 18 years, was an out-loud count to 1,000,000, but instead of just counting to 1,000,001 and calling it a day after a grueling counting marathon, Favour kept going until 1,070,000.

New grenades for the Army
(H/T: long time lurker David in Oklahoma)

From the Valor Guardians blog

doof-new-grenades.jpg

The Army has officially adopted the M111 (and it’s practice counterpart the M112). May not sound terribly significant, but they are the first lethal hand grenades adopted since 1968.

As many know, our standard M67 grenade works pretty well as a fragmentation grenade. Pull the pin, four-ish seconds later it goes ‘splodey, and sends out shards of metal in pretty much every direction. Basic, simple stuff. Unless you have to use it indoors, within the blast radius of the fragments. Fragments can get deflected, go in odd directions, through thin walls – not as much fun, right?

***

Has there ever been a case of mesothelioma reported in someone sharing a room with an exploding grenade? (“Call Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe for action!”

Okay, I know, walking into a cloud of asbestos particles to confirm cleared rooms repeatedly won’t do anyone any good… but it still sounds like an odd worry.

Back to the M-67, it replaced the M-33 and M-26 predecessors and has been in constant use since 1968, an eternity in weaponry terms.

***

Note the M-111 supplements the M-67, not replaces it. Think of them as – well, using your indoor voice or your outdoor voice. Indoor grenades vs. outdoor grenades.

Thank you David for your contribution to our Smart Military Blog.

March is in full swing and the White House red carpet (or East Room carpet) is delivering. Let's break down the standout FLOTUS and Second Lady moments from the past couple weeks.

First up: Melania Trump's weekend getaway coat (March 13, 2026). Boarding Air Force One with her dad, Viktor Knavs, en route to Mar-a-Lago, Melania wore a Mackage Nyire Stripe Tie Waist Wool Coat and I am absolutely obsessed. The rich camel hue with bold black-and-white stripe accents is chef’s kiss. The wrap silhouette cinches at the waist for that signature tailored FLOTUS vibe—structured yet feminine. Mackage nails the luxury outerwear game in general, but this coat is timeless. I am pretty sure I need this coat. Here. In Alabama. It’s sold out (of course it is), but maybe I will luck upon it eventually.

IMG_1138-rr.jpg
IMG_1143-rr.jpg

Fast forward (actually rewind, but details) to Women's History Month at the White House (March 12, 2026). Melania hosted in the East Room alongside POTUS, and she went full fierce with an Adam Lippes Levi Belted Leopard Print Chenille Maxi Skirt. Leopard print on a midi/ maxi length? Bold, but no one is surprised Melania owned it. The skirt was paired with a what I believe to be the Ralph Lauren collection cashmere sweater we have seen before. The belt adds definition, the chenille texture is subtle luxury. The shoes are Christian Louboutin black suede Pigalle Follies 120 pumps. This look is “I'm here to honor women who roar." Adam Lippes has been a go-to for FLOTUS (remember that Inauguration coat?), and this proves why: American-made elegance with a wild side.

IMG_1145-rr.jpg
IMG_1139-rr.jpg

Shoutout to Second Lady Usha Vance at the same event, she looked absolutely lovely in the Marie Oliver The Paxton Dress. The high-neck, long-sleeve midi in a striking blue-and-white abstract zebra-ish print was modern, confident, and fresh. The pattern pops without overwhelming, and the silhouette is graceful for daytime White House duties. Usha is starting to elevate her style game, and she is also an adorable pregnant woman. Love that for her.

IMG_1146-rr.jpg
IMG_1140-rr.jpg

We can't skip the historic first: Melania chairing the UN Security Council on March 2. She chose a sharp Christian Dior belted gray virgin wool tweed jacket (removable scarf for options) over a matching pencil skirt. Peplum shaping, which is currently very on trend, black belt cinch, textured tweed, it all equals pure business chic. Dior + Louboutin heels? Unbeatable power combo.

IMG_1141-rr.jpg
IMG_1148-rr.jpg

Which of these looks was your favorite, are you Team Tweed or Team Animal print?

Thanks, Piper!

By the way, if you'd like a sneak peek at what Piper will probably be featuring next week, check out Piper's X page. She's been posting Oscar red carpet stuff this evening.

13 Today I present two relatively serious and pleasant songs by two different birthday Marks with profoundly unserious and punk-ish bands. First up is Mark McGrath, lead singer of Sugar Ray, who turns 58 today. He starts this song with some grit in his voice which I think is a deliberate stylistic choice, since later the production shifts to a scratchy lo-fi vibe; it's just a bit of vocal fry, like an NPR personality apologizing for his existence, that disappears when the song shifts gears:

Sugar Ray - Someday
https://youtu.be/dPcX-5Tmqt8

Next is Mark Hoppus, bassist and co-lead vocalist with the much-despised blink-182, who turns 54 today. The band had quite the personal journey from their initial PooPoo PeePee Tour to this gothic track off their final untitled album, with everyone's favorite, the upright bass:

57 Evening, folken,

Just finished watching a classic psychological mystery, Crossroads, from 1942. William Powell of the "Thin Man" movies plays a French diplomat in 1935, married to Hedy Lamarr (yes, her), and saddled with amnesia. Suddenly he is thrust into a maze of blackmail and duplicity; Basil Rathbone and Claire Trevor demand a million francs from him, because, they say, he was their confederate in a robbery in 1922. But he doesn't remember!

Or does he? Powell and the script keep us guessing until the end. It's a fine little B & W mystery.

Tony Bennett was in it, as I recall -- probably his only dramatic role.

The original screenplay might have been pretty good stuff from Harlan. But knowing his stories of how studio execs can ruin things, I wouldn't be surprised if there were too many cooks meddling in the production. Usually Harlan took his real name off projects he was disgusted by, using his pen name "Cordwainer Bird."

366 I went to the Arizona Renaissance Fair Saturday (so you don't have to). My review: cheesy.
I've been to RenFaires in CA, OR, and WA. All.of them at least tried for some degree of authenticity. This one seemed to be a carnival with a 17th century theme. They.market it as family oriented, which requires the rough edges of that time period to be rounded off which explains some of it. For instance, unlike others, they restrict weaponry to the degree that it's cartoonish, and they're pretty fussy about "revealing attire". The other is that is obviously a commecial.endeavor, and the assembly line nature is not well hidden. Very little of the independent artisan goods on sale showed any real artistry. At least the jousting seemed to be skilled, in a "WWE rasslin" sense.
For me, it wasn't worth the ~400 mile trip. YMMMV.

370 Ten or so years ago we bought a mountain cabin with a septic tank. It had an overflow alarm whose float needed replacing. It was attached to a big scaffolding of PVC pipes going every which way. I spent a couple hours hanging down inside of it, reaching as far as I could, trying not to breath, working to unscrew the float and screw in a new one. Somehow I broke the other float: the one that activates the pump. That gave my DIY home improvement a new urgency, so I called a professional. When he showed up, he reached down, grasped a piece of the PVC, gave it a twist, and pulled up the whole assembly. He had the floats replaced in no time.

388 Nurse, my wife passed away in October, a few days before her 66th birthday and a few weeks before our 44th wedding anniversary. I still wear my wedding ring every day.

The Hammett House used to print the recipe for their lemon pecan pie and for their German Chocolate pie on their placemats but the last time I was there they had stopped doing that. You can find the recipe on the internet. It is fairly simple. My wife baked it a few times. There is an orange pecan pie variant that we tried one time but we much preferred the lemon pecan. A word of warning, they have many types of pie and some of them are huge. The peanut butter chocolate chip is several inches tall. The first time I ate at the Hammett House, we were in town for an audit and the client took us there for lunch. The food portions were huge and covered the plate. Then they asked if we wanted any pie. We said sure. It was tough staying awake that afternoon while auditing their books.

406 All this evil and stupid shit being done by the Lieberals in Ottawa just adds fuel to the fire of Alberta separation. Moar, please. And fuck the "negotiated separation" bullshit. Unilateral declaration of independence.

Seems like movement is gaining steam. Say a thing that Canadians in America that are from their are supporting it.

410 So no boobies? How do you like living in Beaver, Ut?

You rarely (in my experience, never) get BOOBIES at a RenFaire. What you get is suggestive - a peek here, a hint there.
It isn't the Oregon Country Fair, where sometimes you see boobies you don't want to see, but the ones you want to see make up for it.
I'm surrounded by Mormons up.here in the Mountains, but it's still AZ.

411 Canada's military does have a reputation of treating the Geneva Conventions as nuisance suggestions.

I do believe that Canada's (along with pretty much every other western nation's) military capabilities have greatly depleted over the last 15 years. That is pretty much all to blame on the (lack of) will of leadership.

412 IOW - Kharg is off the menu.

The next news report may be that an island closest to the Straight is under US occupation (and shitloads of HIMARS are off loaded) or Tehran has been taken.

President Trump does like some misdirection and doesn't mind if the rest of us are confused in the moment as a result. Whether he says shit, or quite obviously sends stealth bombers the long way around the world to give a false timeframe for an attack.

I wonder if we're going to find out at the end of this if he asked a friend to play a role that would in the short term require him to shred his reputation, but put him in a position to feed Iran information that lead to their entire leadership being in one place when we were ready to hit them.

I mean, it's a low probability guess, and I'm annoyed enough that I'm not listening to Tucker any more, but I can see *Trump* doing it.

416 Drove into Anchorage to go to the Latin Mass. Sat behind the cutest darned baby girl ever, who spent the Mass smiling among other faces at me and anyone who would pay attention, and giggling. Most distracting, and it was awesome.

Also took the Boy to dinner for his 20th birthday. We avoided serious stuff. Next week we look into getting the grandbaby baptized. It may take some effort because I doubt the Boy has darkened the door of the Cathedral for a couple of years. We shall see how this goes.

I think that the "negotiations" business is to keep the One Country crew and the tribes calm until it's too late. It's diplomacy, in the sense of "saying 'nice doggy' until you find a big stick".

Got started on the taxes, put the big file labeled taxes on the counter in the kitchen. Poured myself a drink and here I am.

I wonder how many IRGC will cross the Gordie Howe Bridge when it opens.
