Completely different painting. No cat.

Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at March 17, 2026 09:38 AM (Zz0t1)

34 I had to look it up too.

Description
"The Use of Tears" depicts a young woman in a melancholic scene, likely on her sickbed. This theme was common in the 19th century, reflecting the emotional struggles of the time. The painting showcases Bonington's skill in capturing sentiment and detail, making it a notable work in his oeuvre.

Significance
Bonington was known for his contributions to watercolor painting and his ability to blend realism with emotional depth. His works, including "The Use of Tears," are celebrated for their technical proficiency and evocative subject matter.

79 This isn't one I would hang but Bonington's technique is interesting and effective. The textures, except for the grandmother (?) and her chair, are soft and faded, as if after a struggle. The colors are muted earth tones, they appear tired which is appropriate.

It's the old lady who is the focus with her dark clothing, solid wood chair and more distinct features. That shifts the focus from the death of a young person to the acceptance of loss. At that time any old person would have lost many family members and friends during their lifetime. She is not immune to the passing and pain but may have run out of tears after losing so many others. But the tenderness is still there in the way she holds the girls hand so gently.

91 It's worth a look at Bonington's (be polite!) other paintings. He is excellent at using natural light and skies to set a mood. And his soft brush work allows the viewer to focus on different parts of the painting, trying to discern detail, until all aspects blend, creating a whole image. In some ways he sets the tone for the Impressionist movement that would follow fifty years later.

What a shame he died so young.

111 The Use of Tears, 1827
Richard Parkes Bonington, English, 1802-1828

Irish woes then? (Off to the Mother & Baby homes or Magdalene Laundries she'll be going?)

Artvee: In part, "Richard Parkes Bonington was an English Romantic landscape painter, who moved to France at the age of 14 and can also be considered as a French artist, and an intermediary bringing aspects of English style to France. Becoming, after his early death, one of the most influential British artists of his time, the facility of his style was inspired by the old masters, yet was entirely modern in its application. His landscapes were mostly of coastal scenes, with a low horizon and large sky, showing a brilliant handling of light and atmosphere. He also painted small historical cabinet paintings in a freely-handled version of the troubadour style."

He had a large body of generally very nice works; beautifully detailed, varying subjects, and colors accenting lighting & placement.

I wouldn't hang today's art selection but would for many of his others.

Thanks.

In February 2021, Kent announced his campaign for the United States House of Representatives election for Washington's third congressional district. He established himself as a candidate supportive of Donald Trump. Kent faced allegations of apparent associations between himself and white nationalists in his campaign. He won the Republican primary against incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler, but lost to Democratic candidate Marie Gluesenkamp Perez in what was considered a major upset. Kent ran again in 2024, losing to Gluesenkamp Perez again by a larger margin.

My favorite claim of an Irishman when accused of being drunk:

"Ah Jaysus, no, no, no... I'm not drunk at all, at all!
This? This is just a few pints, lads!
Sure, beer’s not even proper drinkin’—it's like... like water with a bit o' flavour and happiness in it! I'm as sober as a judge on a Monday mornin'! Look at me, I'm grand—perfectly steady! (stumbles slightly) See? That's just the floor bein' uneven, not me!

Read an article yesterday that said there were roughly 200 millionaire/billionaires in California accounting for around $2t in value.

Since the new tax law was passed, California has lost around $1t in those leaving the state for friendlier tax states.

This Kent guy was a dem before 2021. That being said, there's some antisemites on the right who need to be made persona non-gratis. It doesn't mean you can't criticize Israel, of course you can. But there are too many using it as an excuse for their antisemitism. I pretty much stopped going to Gateway Pundit for that reason.

Thanks. We're all doing fine. Mainly annoyed and hassled.

Have pup and grandpups staying overnight every night, as she doesn't have a shelter in her old building, SIL has been called into service, and she can't carry all of her sleeping kiddies down to our shelter by her lonesome.

Luckily, the grandpups are very cute.

Gotta go. Maybe l8r.

Been through basic training with an M-16. Have gone several times to practice with a variety of pistols and rifles. The last time was a few years ago with our pup in NC. He's got a handful of nice firearms.

Have practiced handling with one of our other pups' Glock without ever loading a bullet in the chamber, just to refresh the feel.

I think I can do this.

230 Thanks for the kind thoughts to all of you knuckleheads. The mourning occurred over the past six months as we watched her slow physical and mental decline. 232 169 This art is rather apropos for me and my wife. At age 93, after coming to live with us six months ago and showing a long slow progressive decline she left this vail of tears this past weekend. Her last coherent words, as we tried to physically restrain her from crawling out of bed were, "I'm going to call the police!" She died peacefully in her sleep in the arms of Morpheus (provided by the hospice team). RIP Mom
Posted by: muldoon at March 17, 2026 10:39 AM (qgHp7)

My most sincere and deepest condolences to you and yours, Muldoon. May His arms both welcome her home and comfort you all.

I know well this sting, having lost my mom 3 1/2 years ago just shy of her 80th birthday. A simple UTI turned septic, which shocked her liver and damaged her brain. She lingered for a week in palliative care after the initial diagnosis of a day, with a "false rebound" in the middle of that. What makes it even worse was that she passed when I was at home getting a change of clothes, so she was alone, though in a medically induced coma. I will never get over that.
