74 Such a simple scene: realistic colors, a natural stance, the garlic and herbs just bright enough to look fresh. His figure stands out against the gray sky. The man's age, his worn clothes and shoes, his steady expression all give a sense of years doing just this. I especially like the way the worn basket is shown.

It's not a dynamic scene but it is effective and rather pleasant.

266 Garlic Seller, 1880
Jean-François Raffaëlli

Raffaelli painted another very similar painting to this one, Promeneur et son chien (Walker and His Dog). Both can be seen, side-by-side, on Gallery 19 C dot com.

In part, “When one paints the people,” declared Raffäelli, “one must never have pity on their state,...nor should one flatter them or paint them as sublime, as have done certain unphilosophic painters. One should paint them in their place, with kindness and sympathy, while keeping one’s distance,... It is the best way of showing them,..."

Catalogue note
In studying [Raffäelli’s] work astonishment is felt at his variety, his dramatic instinct, his power to catch not only the character of the people in the streets but their movement. He seizes the transient with the accuracy of the camera, but at the same time he gives what no camera ever detects, for he looks into the souls of the people passing and records the struggle, the hope, the despair, the loneliness of their lives (“Jean François Raffäelli,” The Art Interchange, vol. 34, no. 4, April 1, 1895, p. 111).

There's much more on the ^ website.

Like today's painting & would gladly hang it.

Thanks.

That's not stopping Love's Truck Stop in New Boston, TX from charging $5.09 for diesel.
Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at March 20, 2026 10:36 AM (Zz0t1)

Funnily enough, the Love’s in Tulia, TX is known for, as is the gas station across from it, for having higher than usual gas prices as they are the only gas stations on a 60 odd mile stretch of I-27. But recently, the script has flipped and they are amongst the cheapest in the area, holding at $2.99 a gallon regular unleaded.

327 Econ professor from NC State has a theory why gas prices shoot up like a rocket and fall like a feather. It’s psychology.

Drivers buy gas at one or maybe a couple of gas stations. Even if we could save a penny or two per gallon by buying at another station, we know that some of those savings will be eaten up by driving to the less convenient station. There’s also the matter of the value of our time to find the lowest gas price.

But, when gas prices rise, more drivers shop for the lowest gas price in their area. With gas costs taking a bigger chunk of their income, drivers are motivated to seek any savings they can. The use of gas price apps increases and local news programs regularly report on the locations of the lowest gas prices.

The opposite behavior occurs when gas prices drop. Fewer drivers shop for the lowest price. One reason is they are just happy to see prices fall.

Sellers of gasoline know these behaviors. When oil prices drop, station owners will cut their gas price, but more slowly. Why? Because they know fewer drivers will shop for the lowest price. Instead, drivers will be relieved

I agree. I also think part of that is a lack of domestic manufacturing and an over reliance on imports, especially for critical goods. We allowed our manufacturing base to be destroyed for years in search of better margins mostly through cheap labor. COVID showed what a substantial mistake and liability to our national survival that was.

We still haven’t done enough to ensure those supply chains are stable and accessible in times of stress
