All seriousness aside, this is a dramatic painting. Cubism often seems that way, with the sharp and unexpected angles. And the red couch and tabletop, the orange face of the left-hand table, and the big blue book (an atlas?), enliven the dark and neutral colors.
The slices of cheese (?) on the table between Naked Lady's head and the beer mug are intriguing. Looking at them, you expect to see a knife . . . and there it is in the woman's nose, with the darkness covering her mouth standing in for the knife handle. The pensive attitude of the husband reflects the uncertainty common throughout the interwar period, while the woman's nudity symbolizes the sense of vulnerability felt by a population that had learned in the most graphic manner that wars no longer stayed confined to the battlefield.

192 Sinners was really good. It should have won more. I felt like it was just on the verge of something great, which just needed some editing help to get there.
Sinners was one of the better movies, yes. But honestly that's a sign of how far movie making has fallen. 20 years ago Sinners would have been "best movie of a particular weekend" and there would have been 20-30 better ones. Posted by: 18-1 at March 16, 2026 10:22 AM (sKqQm) "Sinners" was decent. Good action, good acting, good music. I liked the first half better. I think it would have worked well as a revenge fantasy against the Klan, which is where I thought it was going at first, similar to "Inglorious Basterds". This video was interesting, although probably not for the reason they think; Hollywood is dying, and the workers won't identify the real reasons. At 1:30, a not unintelligent woman describes a convergence of factors, but never mentions the fact that HW despises half the country, and keeps making the same crappy stuff for decades. (superheroes, I'm looking at you). Look at what won the Oscars - movies that most of us haven't seen and will never see.

Superheroes made an awful lot of money before they decided that superhero movies needed to be a vehicle to push THE MESSAGE. Studio heads make a great deal of money. Their primary responsibility is to determine where the zeitgeist is going so as to greenlight future movies. A blind man could see that the SH genre was totally overexposed and redundant, yet they continued to dump billions into them. I would have been willing to tell them that for much less than they earn. Regardless of your particular tastes, the films from 95 and 96 have deeply penetrated the zeitgeist and will be remembered, commented on and viewed, long after their initial debut.
Posted by: Thomas Bender at March 16, 2026 10:57 AM We kind of set the standard for that. Posted by: Prometheus Marketing Dept. at March 16, 2026 10:59 AM (0sNs1) 299

I think it's a good portion nostalgia for how it felt to watch those when you were young trust me they do NOT hold up. people my kids' age do not think they're better than current films because - those particular ones? - they aren't. Posted by: SSBN 656 (G) at March 16, 2026 10:58 AM (dmDsy) I say he's no different than his character from the original series. The difference for me is Cox is not there to balance it out. >>this year WAS - I think - a good Oscars year. As noted, no one is going to be talking about any of the films from last night in 20 years, with the possible exception of Sinners. Regardless of your particular tastes, the films from 95 and 96 have deeply penetrated the zeitgeist and will be remembered, commented on and viewed, long after their initial debut. Words you will never hear at a casual group hang: Hey everybody, let's watch Begonia. >>It kind of feels like increasingly, movies are being made more pretentious in order to culturally divide people into "ingroup" and "outgroup", and THAT is their primary focus. Hollywood used to try to strike a balance between commercially successful films and art house/critic favorites. Now the films are largely selected as a mechanism to service THE MESSAGE or to stick it to the squares. Posted by: Thomas Bender at March 16, 2026 11:11 AM (XV/Pl) 317
I like Diego Rivera's type of Cubism, not the multi-dimensional, let-me-put-your-boob-on sideways Cubism. So this is a miss for me.
I saw "Solo Mio" a few weeks ago, which is the first movie I've seen at the theater in more than a year. I liked it. It was a Romcom from a guy's perspective, and the reason for the break-up that sets the stage made sense. The side characters were fun, too. I loved the soundtrack.
