Our Pal Fallout and Radiation Highway Patrol! This week's episode: Hitchhiker 2! The Incredible Petrified World! ![]() Today's offering are two more of the excellent Big Sky Cigar Co. Yellowstone, is the fifth of their River Series of the best fishing streams in Montana. The others were covered a few months ago. This is a very mild cigar, made in Esteli, Nicaragua. A blend of Ecuadorian, Connecticut and Nicaraguan tobacco. As all of these cigars, very well made and simply great to enjoy. I've paired it with some great, if not well known bourbons. Big Horn, Devil's Brigade and Penelope Four Grain. The second cigar is Tim Montana Vigilante. Which I had to try because of the name. It is unexpectedly mild, very similar to Yellowstone in taste and flavor. It pairs well with the above bourbons also Buffalo Trace. Finding the cigars is harder. I order them from their website and there are brick and mortar stores around. As a side note Texas has a lot of stores that carry them. For some reason the company is not able to ship to residential addresses in Texas. I has three people try to explain that to me from the company. I still don't get it. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? I use the ‘make me an offer’ gimmick at cigars international. Put in a dogshit lowball offer, and you’ll be surprised how often they accept. Selection is limited and products come and go, but they usually have a wide assortment of high-quality sticks to make offers on. You should get able to get cigars at 55-35% off normal selling prices.

No, if anything it's worse. There's no indoor smoking at the store in Yakima. You could when they were on the REZ but the new owner wanted to do something else. Also, I don't know if the excise tax on tobacco products is being collected by out of state vendors. 9.8% is damn steep. Then, they want a $2.00 per pack cigarette tax increase. For the chirren of course. Posted by: Winston AKA Pops at March 15, 2026 07:16 PM (NvtJi) 30

I got a scope recommendation from RI Red. I mounted it on my CZ bolt action .22LR, and proceeded to impress myself. 0.5 inch groups at 50 yards with crap ammo. The scope itself (an Arken) was easy to manipulate, with positive controls, and it was nice and clear (although at only 50 yards so far).
I'm looking forward to trying some good ammo! By the way, this Weasel fellow might have a point about rear bags and avoiding wobbly shit. I used a good rear bag, set it up carefully with the bipod, and the rifle was rock solid. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 15, 2026 07:20 PM (n9ltV) 32

Due to the glories of reloading my own ammo, I was able to shoot 3/4 ounce loads of #9 shot in my 12 gauge, which is more than enough to break a clay target at short range while not getting beat up by recoil. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at March 15, 2026 07:26 PM (iTShx) 45

Good evening Horde. Thanks Weasel.
We have been to the range and can confirm that we worked on fundamentals. Given the encouragement of last week's content, I sought to focus on trigger. At times, I found success. Other times, success was more elusive. The problem I have is that I'm trying to do the same things and it feels the same, but results vary. Grateful, on the other hand, remains a sniper. We're both getting new glasses, so will be interesting if being able to see helps our results. We also gave the gubs and magazines a proper and thorough cleaning, so we're ready for next time. I saw a crime documentary with an interesting firearms theory and an unintentional Tool Time reference. It seems an elementary school principal became concerned when his girlfriend became pregnant as he didn't feel fatherhood was right for him. Accordingly, he paid his good buddy a big $2500 to kill his girlfriend while he established a perfect alibi. Girlfriend lived in a tightly packed apartment building and therefore the police were surprised when no neighbor heard a gunshot in the middle of the night despite the fact she had been dispatched by means of a .380. Because there were pieces of potato scattered about the scene, the police hypothesized a potato had been used as an impromptu suppressor. The reporter asked the cop to shove a .380 into a potato and blast away so the audience could judge for themselves the efficiency of potato silencers. The cop responded in a manner reminiscent of Al to Tim Taylor, "I don't think so, Tim."

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at March 15, 2026 07:22 PM I purchased a S&W 657 (.41 Magnum) w/ /6.5" barrel and unfluted cylinder some years ago, and even before I'd shot it, sent it in for Mag-Na-Porting, which was relatively new and 'hot' at the time. While waiting for its return, I purchased another identical one. Upon its return, I took them both to the range, excited to experience the salutory effects of the ports (two on each side of the barrel). Bang! No perceived difference. Bang! Same. So I fired them both simultaneously, one in each hand, single-action. No perceptable difference with the ported one in my right (strong) hand. Only when I fired the ported one in my left hand could I detect a slight difference in recoil reduction. Now I did have an opportunity to shoot a competition 9x23 (a very hot 9mm round) with an excellent port. It had negative jump (i.e. you had to bring it back up on target, not lower it. My best local gun guy has a SW Bodyguard 2.0 (.380 acp) that has had the Performance Center treatment to give it a top port, improved sights, and a few other features.
I thought that might be an excellent EDC for Bride of PI that she could practice with a lot if it was very mild shooting. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at March 15, 2026 07:52 PM (HlyYF) The Kodiak's rubber grips really help a lot when it comes to softening felt recoil. Do your bride's hand fit the grips of that Bodyguard 2.0 well? If her hands don't fit well with that pistol, all the porting in the world won't help her. I you couldn't feel a difference in .41 magnum, then I doubt my wife could feel any difference in .380 acp. The Performance Center upgrade does have a slightly longer barrel. 49 We have been to the range and can confirm that we worked on fundamentals. Given the encouragement of last week's content, I sought to focus on trigger. At times, I found success. Other times, success was more elusive.
Posted by: TRex ======= TRex, where does your trigger finger sit on the trigger, the pad?, the distal (first) joint? or does your finger go further into the trigger using your standard grip. When you get inconsistent results, the first thing I would check is fit of the pistol to your hand. Next, I would check to see if your master grip is consistent. For proper recoil management, the bones of your forearm and wrist should align with the muzzle in a straight line. Using a crush grip (grip as hard as you can and then back off just a tad) also prevents using your smaller fingers from milking the trigger. You get a consistent force. This is NOT a target grip nor firearm specific. Contrary to Herr Glock, the distal joint where the trigger nests in the first joint is the most consistent in placement and allows the strongest leverage to pull anything from a double action revolver 12 lb trigger to a striker fired 4.5 lb wt. Try while drying firing at home. Posted by: whig at March 15, 2026 08:07 PM (E4rtv) 97

A fair chunk of range customers may be leos or leo adjacent and I can think of several cases where bystanders at the range got people firing into trouble. One was a Wisconsin case where a guy had a defective Olympia AR that doubled. He went to prison when a leo saw his problems at the range and reported him to the ATF. Wondering if the porting would significantly reduce value.
Posted by: rhomboid ======== Usually it does. Magna Porting is the premier pistol porting firm but most people find porting unpleasant with minimal effects on recoil unless you are firing really hot rounds with a lot of gas (like full round 357 rounds). As a sidenote though, in the K Frame Model 66, flame cutting and barrel cracking (the original K Frame in 357 used the same flat spot on the underside of the barrel (to allow the cylinder to close) of forcing cone where cracking happens in a full diet of hot 357 rounds. Dunno if porting would help or hurt that. On teh SP 101, it is a tank and go to go with unpleasantly and heavily loaded 357's if your hand tolerates it. TRex the laws are going to put a dent in our range - as they are a gun shop and they obviously sell a lot of things covered by the assault weapons purchase ban. And they do a fair number of transfers. And that scratches a lot of rentals off their list.
AND I think the bigger one will be the carry an assault firearm on or about one's person any place open to the public... I suppose that they could probably change to allow only members to shoot and that would make it a club not a place open to the public. But that's going to also put a dent in who is going to come and shoot. AND it is also seems to me that if the cops wanted to be a-holes about it they could wait in the parking lots of ranges and ask people what is in the cases. Watched the first two videos all the way through. Interesting stuff.
Question for the Horde. I have an old H&R pocket hammerless .32 revolver. Apparently a first model, first variation. Seems identical to this pic: https://tinyurl.com/3928p4t3 Four-digit serial number. It would not fire reliably because hammer spring was too weak. Ordered a new hammer spring, which had to be cut down because too long. Finally made it fit; it did a fine job of popping the primer on an emptied-out cartridge. New problem cropped up. Now the trigger does not reset fully. It springs back maybe 90% of its travel, but has to be pushed the last 10% . And the sear and the hand won't reset unless the trigger does all the way forward to its stop. Remove the hammer spring, and trigger resets. Seems like the hammer spring is causing pressure on a part called the "rebounder", to which the hand is affixed. Any suggestions? I am thinking maybe a hammer spring of lighter-gauge metal? At our range there was a thing that happened - a patron was seen trying to disassemble a rented gun. Turned out he was testing some 3D printed super safeties.
Not sure if he was spotted by RSO or if someone reported him to TSO, but he was escorted off the premises. Somewhere along the way this got reported to the "authorities." And turns out the guy was a DC resident, and he had 3d printers and stuff he had printed lying about in his abode. He is in deep doo doo. So this is not a regular check for legal compliance - but if you try to modify a gun you have rented from a range AT THE RANGE - bad things are likely to happen. We frequently get asked (over the phone) at my range about whether firearms used there have to be legal (this is CA, so of course an absurd number of unconstitutional and just plain stupid gun laws).
We don't enforce laws, just our own safety SOP, is our answer. Not aware there's ever been a stool pigeon incident (like the cases whig describes, which are incredible to me). And it's common for people to come and swap out parts on ARs to shoot, then swap them back to CA-legal condition when they leave. We get SEALs fairly often, coming for various reasons. They always ask if they can bring their "work" guns. I always answer "the more exotic the better, and we don't enforce laws here". Last time this happened the guy brought a newly introduced .308 AR-10 variant, think he called it an SP-10, with some sweet optics (duh). A pleasure to (accurately) shoot at the 300-yd target. Beautiful. Best rule is to always call ahead and check. Posted by: rhomboid at March 15, 2026 08:26 PM (U/Byj) 134

What is the difference between a trustee and a beneficiary? Posted by: Oddbob at March 15, 2026 08:28 PM (Fs0KI) 136
FWIW, the original no dash Model 66 is unlikely to have factory Magna Porting. Just confirmed memory and that did not start doing much work until the mid 70's.
According to Brave AI, Smith & Wesson Model 66 did not have factory-standard Magna-Porting as a cataloged option. While Magna-Port is a patented process by the company Magna-Port, Smith & Wesson never offered it as a standard factory feature on the Model 66. The SP-101 might be ported from the factory but doubtful that the Model 66 with no dash was as production ended about 1977. FWIW, it appears the Ruger did have a licensing and mfg agreement with Magnaport to offer models from the factory with it. Posted by: whig at March 15, 2026 08:31 PM (E4rtv) 137

Thanks whig, as always high quality info. I'm not sweating the whole thing that much, as I'm iffy on both revolvers due to already having similar/same in the safe. And would I really want to shoot a like-new no-dash 66 anyway, when my 66-2 is my main revolver? There are other handguns in the picture here (like several H&K P7s) that I will almost certainly opt for, for both giggles and resale value.

I fired one or two cylinders of 357mag out of all my revolvers (they're all 357s) just to see what it was like, after that, nothing but my own (usually low end of loading range) 38 reloads, and some factory 38.
Posted by: rhomboid ======= If they are in collectible shape (like nearly new), see if you can get the original box (for Rugers that are factory ported, it is on the box) and instructions. Some people keep the boxes, some don't but it can make a difference in value. If you do shoot 357 magnums in a K Frame (the newest revived ones are fine to shoot btw due to a redesigned sleeved barrel), use the heavier 140-158 gr rather than the light and hot 125 GR JHP that police used. Posted by: rhomboid ====== The P7 will certainly increase in value more than the two you cited but protect those mags if you fire them. Mags are the major weakness for any out of production pistol. And friends don't let friends use Pro Mags. Posted by: whig at March 15, 2026 08:41 PM (E4rtv) 151
Only time I recall having a bang stick at the ready (not the well-concealed bedside handgun which is always there) was back in 2020 Summer of Love when there was a characteristically lame bit of trouble not far away (burned some banks). Kept the Mossberg 500 loaded with a mix of low-recoil buckshot and slugs out for a night or two. Otherwise do not carry around the house.

Possible. Wolff Springs is who I use but your pistol is way too old for them to carry such a spring.
Have you using marking fluid to see if any parts are put out of alignment and now rubbing from the current spring? Posted by: whig at March 15, 2026 08:25 PM (E4rtv) Wolff Springs actually has some kits of springs, some of which might be suitable, and they are not expensive. Marking fluid is a good idea. Posted by: Oddbob at March 15, 2026 08:37 PM (Fs0KI) The ATF (BATFE) only looks at your trust when you apply to purchase or transfer an NFA item into it. Otherwise, it’s purely an estate planning tool to deal with your firearms. No government involvement. The ATF requires that the NFA Trust meet its legal requirements as a condition of approval. As well, all Trustees/Responsible Person must do the complete approval process - background check, fingerprints, photos, etc. Posted by: RI Red - somebody? at March 15, 2026 08:45 PM (z1SIt) 155
So those VA legislators are ruling no ARs for thee, but OK for me.
So how does a Virginia legislator get himself a nice mail order Daniel Defense AR out in the near future? He shows his special legislator ID to the FFL in VA when it comes in? How does an FFL person know the ID is valid, and that the guy or gal standing in front of him is still in office? Or is it good for life, your VA legislator status, as far as buying the gun? And how will a shipper such as Palmetto State Armory know they are shipping to an anointed VA gun buyer? Ima gonna go into the fake ID for gun buy biz in VA starting soon. Posted by: M. As I understand it, I can establish the trust with myself as the only trustee and then when I buy my first NFA item and assign it to the trust, I have to do all the ATF stuff -- prints, pics, etc. What is the process to add other trustees?
What is the difference between a trustee and a beneficiary? Posted by: Oddbob ======= Go ahead and put a wife (or kids) on the trust to begin with. If something happens, makes it easy to transition and there is a difference between an NFA trust that only deals with one NFA item rather than multiple firearms and NFA items. Posted by: rhomboid ------ Colts are gtg with heavy loaded cartridges and the Cobra is the more modern revolver design compared with the older 1898 era locking mechanism using leaf springs. Colt always had better and more consistent metallurgy back in the day than Smith did. Smiths were easier to work on their lockwork and better double action triggers unmodified. Colts had better single action. To give you an example of mag prices, I bought a Sig ex military P6 in the early 2000's, sold here as the P225. Original magazines now are about 75-100 bucks each and no longer available other than Pro Mag. The brief revived Sig P225 a couple used different magazines for that model. I saw a video from a lawyer in Virginia about what to do with the inbound laws - this is not legal advice I am just telling you what I saw on a video. YMMV.
1. Buy guns and ammo. And mags! Now. 2. If you have the parts for something that falls under the definition of an assault firearm (say you have an unfinished lower) and you have been putting off building it - build it. Would assembling it later fall under the ban on manufacture? Not a great risk. 3. Look into trusts especially if you have non-immediate-family who would be recipients of your firearms upon your death - because transfers will be banned except for immediate family. And VA legislators! 4. Take pictures of your inventory (scuba to the bottom of the pond if necessary) and email them to yourself. This self documents ownership and puts a timestamp. If you are not comfortable with doing that, the lawyer said his office will photograph and place the photos in a private file there in the office for a fee. Posted by: rhomboid The rest of the parts for the P6 are available as many of them are used in other P models. Some of the oldest models may not feed certain hollowpoints like Hornady well. But the design is rock solid (cousin of the P220 in 45 ACP) and the weight of the pistol makes them easy to fire and the single stack magazines are more reliable than double stack on old used magazines. I have about ten mags or so from mine as I bought them from the LGS for a steal after the LGS ran out of the P6s to sell. The one negative other than older ones feeding certain hollowpoints is some people report issues using ultra high velocity +p ammo as the slide moves too fast to pick up new rounds. Feed it 124 gr hollow points with a decent ogive and it simply works and accurate as heck. Posted by: whig at March 15, 2026 09:05 PM (E4rtv) 188

Elric ditto for me on most of your brand preferences. There are some legacy name brands like Romeo y Julieta that have some I like, same for Montecristo.
I used to buy Cubans at duty free (or tabacchias in Rome or other places in Europe) regularly, but mostly as gifts as I was a very occasional burner of dried cured black leaf back then. I was just thinking of the trademark fight. I think the New World guys are on the high ground for many reasons, and if anything a likely outcome is, say, Montecristo in an advantageous joint venture with or buying the Cuban one outright. Can see the resulting companies having Cuban and non-Cuban lines. Imagine the sector in Cuba will need massive investment, from the fields on up. But one way or the other the fields of Pinar del Rio and the rollers will be part of the cigar world once the gangster regime is liquidated. Posted by: rhomboid at March 15, 2026 09:15 PM (U/Byj) 203

Posted by: Elric The Blade at March 15, 2026 09:22 PM (p0x3z) 212
Based on what seems widespread views in the cigar industry, Cuban quality has indeed declined. The massive price increase a few years ago was a curious move.
New World (Nicaragua, DR, Honduras) are making strides in penetrating the European and Asian markets. I am trying new-to-me stuff almost constantly, and still have just scratched the surface of New World offerings. I have little interest in current Cubans but can see things changing greatly for the better when external $$$ comes in. Posted by: rhomboid at March 15, 2026 09:22 PM (U/Byj) 213
Well, no, but after I got it back I went a little nutty buying sharpening stones and now even our butter knives have a surgical edge.
Posted by: Weasel at March 15, 2026 08:58 PM (1L5V5) Any interest in conducting a knife-sharpening clinic at TXMoMe? I'd love to learn from those who have been successful. I have some Amazon whetstones, plus a SpyderCo SharpMaker, but have thus far spectacularly failed at adequately sharpening any of my knives to a "paper test" edge. How does an FFL person know the ID is valid, and that the guy or gal standing in front of him is still in office? Or is it good for life, your VA legislator status, as far as buying the gun?
Posted by: M. Gaga Sounds like an excellent case for FFL to deny a sale. Apply the laws to everyone equally, even of the legislators have arrogated special privileges to themselves. Posted by: FeatherBlade at March 15, 2026 09:26 PM (C0Nlv) 215

Should have asked while whig was still here, but - won't there be a wave of lawsuits taking on the new VA gun laws?
Recognizing that the de facto repeal of the 2A by courts - and their substitution of their own "doctrines" and "tests" and often just outright nonsensical policy preferences - is probably the most outlandish abandonment of the constitution on a competitive list thereof, would think there would be some pushback. Out of laziness and despair I have given up following the cases around the country, but AFAIK Heller is still toilet paper to the districts and circuits, and AR bans/near bans are thriving in several states. I’d like too, if I didn’t wear out my welcome! You were a great host/ambassador, and BenHad was as welcoming and warm as you indicated. In fact, all of the Morons were the same. They will have to take effect first and someone will have to have standing. And there are going to be so many - there are tons of new gun laws. Regardless, the cases will take time. ---- Biggest "beginner" mistake is starting with too fine sharpening stones. Get a 600 grit (more coarse) and maybe a 1000 or 1200 (finer grit) and a leather strop. Start coarse until you can feel a burr develop on the edge, and refine it with the finer stones. Takes a little practice but you'll get the hang of it! Posted by: Weasel at March 15, 2026 09:36 PM (vt7xw) I used to be able to create (and feel) the burr on my 400 grit stone, but the last time out, it wasn't happening for some reason. The Sharpie test told me that I had the correct angle, but the end result was unsatisfactory. I guess, just like shooting, knife-sharpening is a perishable skill! 4. Take pictures of your inventory (scuba to the bottom of the pond if necessary) and email them to yourself. This self documents ownership and puts a timestamp. If you are not comfortable with doing that, the lawyer said his office will photograph and place the photos in a private file there in the office for a fee.

I use the contraption sharpener I mentioned above because it’s idiot proof, but I sharpen regularly so I never need to use more than 800 or 600 to start. I have several cheap folders with soft blades. Sharp for a couple cuts, then bleh. I practice on those before touching anything else.

Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at March 15, 2026 09:34 PM (NlEaG) For example I expect the carry on or about one's person law to get overturned at some point. I have heard people say that this law is intended to only cover open carry. "Washington Gun Law" on YouTube opined that, said don't worry about the law so much. EXCEPT THE LAW DOES NOT STATE OPEN CARRY. It says you cannot have it on or about your person in any place open to the public. That means people are going to get dinged on it. And I think it leaves you open to forfeiture, too. It's going to take a while to get these changed, and people will pay a price for it. AOP, Is this the one with the V shaped trigger spring that acts with the lower leg on a lug on the front of the trigger and is under the cylinder?
If it is, (I think it is but I am often wrong) the spring may not be riding well on the nose of the trigger, if it is too long it might interfere with the full rebound. I think it is similar to the Spanish knock-offs of the S&W Russian. I can't tell if the H&R acts with the upper or the lower leg of the V-spring from drawings and I have never had one apart. Does this animation of the Spanish pistol help? youtu.be/MqZfl_HMAGA Posted by: Kindltot at March 15, 2026 09:53 PM (rbvCR) 237

youtu.be/MqZfl_HMAGA Posted by: Kindltot at March 15, 2026 09:53 PM (rbvCR) It is a V-shaped trigger spring, but its action is different than in that animation. Without the drag of the hammer spring, the trigger spring moves the trigger quite forcefully to the reset position. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 15, 2026 11:10 PM (8zz6B) 242
Went to the range today and got to try a different gun, a Glock 48 with red dot. I usually shoot my Glock 43 with iron sights. Less felt recoil with today's gun but the jury is still out on the red dot. Maybe I'm a Luddite but I like the iron sights.
