I'm going to repost this from the Tech Thread because it's cool and others may know someone in need of this treatment:
My Dad's procedure at Emory yesterday was a success. They used focused ultrasound on his brain to stop the Parkinson's tremors in his left hand. The tremors were so bad he could hardly hold anything and now they are gone. They do it while the patient is in an MRI machine, and it takes a couple of hours. Right now they are only doing 6 procedures a month, but as the process is perfected that will increase, as will the number of hospitals that offer it. It took a year of tests and prep to get to this point but it's worth it. It does not cure Parkinson's, but will make his remaining time hopefully more pleasant. Prayers for law enforcement officers. I've been telling the story of a NYS trooper who has been on trial twice for murder and manslaughter. A traffic stop went wrong , the driver who had prior warrants and his family in the car took off. The trooper did a pit maneuver and a small child was thrown from the car and killed. The trooper was charger by the NYS AG and found not guilty of murder , but the jury couldn't reach a verdict on manslaughter. A new trial was ordered and yesterday the trooper was found guilty of manslaughter. Father never charged Ain't going to make cops job any easier. It’ll be interesting to see what the marines are being sent to seize; Kharg Island is a worthy target. I also have noted that there are four other small islands in the straits that are not of that much importance themselves, but which are very strategically located and useful for any force that wants to exert control over traffic through it.

Posted by: vmom deport deport deport at March 14, 2026 08:44 AM (znREB) --- A few years ago I began looking at my Lenten practices and decided that "giving things up" wasn't that effective and that I should try to "do more." So i would go to an a daily Mass each week, or say an additional Rosary, but my schedule is making that difficult. My wife and I saw that they are doing a Vespers service on Thursday evenings (Liturgy of the Hours) and we were going to include that, but missed the first two weeks due to health/family issues. We did got this week and it was pretty cool. It's just a bunch of singing verses, with some Latin prayers added in. It feels ancient, because it is, and I think that's one of the big things bringing people into the Church. Everything modern now feels fake, and people want genuine authenticity. In terms of food, a couple of years ago I began observing the Friday abstinence from meat year-round (except on feast days) and in accordance with the USCCB's guidelines, I would fast during the day to have meat with dinner. My extended family has been going down there since the early 60s. When I was a youngun they would rent a house on the beach for all of us with 8-10 adults and a dozen cousins. It seems kind of silly to be fasting all year and then to go meatless and eat like normal during Lent, so I am fasting and abstaining on Fridays. Kind of tough sledding, but I'm also used to it. The hardest part is the lack of that protein surge I would get from chowing down on pepperoni pizza.
Another factor is that I have Type II diabetes, so my diet is already limited. Happily, a strict diet and increased exercise and weight loss have brought my glucose down to pre-diabetic levels without medication and I'm on the brink of being in normal range. I'll always have to watch what I eat, but being "condemned" to live a healthy and fit lifestyle is something I find easy to accept. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. My brain is coming down after being hyper vigilant being sole caregiver for 14 years. I've only seen my family doctor once in 10 years but we had a phone call. I'm not a pill person but he prescribed pills for anxiety and depression and gave me 4 pills for panic attacks. I found GABA online and bought that from Amazon for anxiety since the pills will take a month to work. Day 5. I had my first visit from Jillian from the mental health agency. She's coming back next week. We're going to get me through this. I showed her my plans. She was impressed. My brain is processing everything at once and I'm overwhelmed. This will pass. After she left, I did take down all the outside Christmas lights. I'm in Canada and it's been cold. Really. I did sleep 8 hours without zzzQuil yesterday. Sleeping 8 hours was amazing. I did have my first ever panic attack Monday. The pill worked. Interesting experience. Not recommended. Once I'm through this, hopefully I can be there in some way for other Horde caregivers. If the bills goes through, say this week, the issue is off the table. The law goes into effect, and then there are lawsuits and injunctions, etc. Judges asserting a constitutional right to stuff ballot boxes (it's a form of free expression!). But having this massively one-sided issue just sitting there, week after week, month after month. Forcing the Dems and Rinos to recite the same stupid talking points that women and black people are retarded, that's absolutely toxic. The 'town halls' and campaign events are going to start, along with outdoor fairs and stuff, and having this sitting there is a great way to create a ruckus. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Posted by: Stateless at March 14, 2026 08:59 AM (Sco7b) I seem to remember that your mother was a former Catholic nun (religious sister?). Have you tried praying the Rosary? I find it very calming. You don't have to start will all 5 decades -- just ease-in, as it were. Also, I know you're in Canada, so options might be limited, but is there an orthodox Catholic Church close-by? Mrs. Cop and I are both reverts back to the Catholic Church. Once you reject the "pure materialism" of the secular world, and embrace the spiritual warfare that we are called the wage, it is source of great solace. The craziness just rolls off my back, now. I think the global goons determined sovereign nations were “selfish” a hundred years ago (unelected bureaucrats ruling the world illegitimately, is not selfish, somehow) and must be destroyed.
It isn’t really more complicated than that. Self determination, and “democracy” while right there in the UN charter, is most definitely not wanted by the usual suspects. So it’s no surprise the UN would posit that there is a “right” to invade other countries, basically. That’s as transparent as the “No Nukes” crowd, who really weren’t against nuclear weapons per se, just against the US having them. The shithole countries don’t have an illegal alien invasion, amiright? Weird, huh? We can argue about why that is the case. Posted by: Common Tater at March 14, 2026 09:12 AM (qQhFt) 91

This is why the Dem (and GOPe) arguments are increasingly couched in the terms of moral absolutism, and backed up by outrageous lies. It doesn't matter of gun laws work, they are the Right Thing To Do. It's fine to repeat the easily disproven claim that only the United States has mass casualty events because the lie serves a purpose.
We have gone beyond "the ends justify the means" because no one cares what the ends actually are. No one can articulate them. Oh, the right can, but the left and their allies cannot. The means now justify the means. Cruelty is the goal. They don't want prosperity for all, they want misery for their enemies, even if it rebounds onto them. We can pray for those people, work for their repentance and salvation, but we cannot trust them. They will break every promise and violate every pledge. They are controlled by pure evil. The enemy is evil, and his goal is chaos. He tries to move towards chaos through division.
Every issue is a chance to divide. To sow hate. To promote hopelessness. To create an environment that tries to convince you differences are irreconcilable. He is driven by the idea that if you can divide us, you can defeat us. His mission is undertaken by instilling fear. It operates by using force multipliers to make any division seem larger than it is. It corrupts all the auspices of contemporary society- the internet, media and organized groups to give an appearance of popular support. His enemy is the truth. It is sunlight that shines brightly on his corruption…of everything. It is also a perseverance to do good. To understand, to honestly debate, to expose mendacity, and to promote the obvious, provable greater good. Never yield or surrender to what you know are lies. Vanity is considered a sin in Catholic theology, often defined as an inordinate desire for recognition, admiration, or glory, often linked to excessive focus on appearance or accomplishments. It is considered a form of pride (one of the capital sins).
Posted by: one hour sober at March 14, 2026 09:31 AM (Y1sOo) --- This is the key to understanding David French and the Bulwark crew. Their paramount need is status. French went to the best schools, has military service (which he brings up all the time even though it's nothing to brag about) and now he works for what he considers the ne plus ultra of media, the NYT. And yet he doesn't understand why people who used to like him now despise him. He constantly swings from using the Affable, Patient, Christian persona to the Angry Condemnation voice. I know he's a Calvinist (the prototype Yard Sign Calvinist), but he acts like a Southern Baptist. Only they can seamlessly transition from "I love Jesus, praise God, forgive your neighbor" to "Cindy Lou, you bitch! You keep your whore ass away from may man!" It worked in reverse. Never mind ball bearings we don’t even make Aspirin any longer. No nation could be entirely self-sufficient, but the breadth and scope of American de-industrialization is clearly enemy action. No other conclusion is possible. I believe a lot of people intuitively know when the government is working for the greater good, and when it’s overstepped the power given to them by the citizens and starts to use it against their will. We’ve seen the latter from Democrats during COVID and Biden’s reign. They are actively promising retribution for our current return to a constitutional government that operates within societal boundaries and ultimately on behalf of a clear majority of our citizens.
Democrats have fought against voter id, electoral reform, massive fraud and the profligate use of our taxpayer largess to fund their schemes because they know their authoritarian rule and march towards societal decline are ultimately their only means to seize and hold power. It all makes sense and only takes a moment of honestly and clarity to recognize. We now have our boot on the neck of the beast, but it is still dangerous. It’s not the time to relent or declare victory. It’s time to complete its demise. Posted by: Marcus T at March 14, 2026 10:04 AM (R1D6K) 172

I think Trump poses an interesting contrast to people like David French. Trump is not a religious person by temperament, but he does respect religion and particularly religious people. He strikes me as a sinner who is who he is, and hopes to do better, and genuinely admires people who are capable of living a wholly religious life.
I also think that he has experienced a spiritual awakening, and you can see that in unfiltered moments when he speaks about being shot, and also when he talks about salvation. He wants to be saved, is worried that he won't be, and so in his own way, does things within his measure to try to make that happen. And he loves his country and its people. The French Davidians are certain that they are saved, they know that they are righteous and so feel free to be mean and petty when it strikes them. They see zero conflict between being super-polite to demon-adjacent heretics who bless child mutilation and then immediately denounce faithful religious people who reasoned Trump was less vile than Harris. Henry “Scoop” Jackson, and Stu Symington and guys like that weren’t quite as benign as advertised.
If you check out what they did during the Army McCarthy hearings, and the House Committee on Un-American Activities it should ring very familiar as to how Democrats operate today. Never address the substance of an allegation, but go after the one making the claim. Deflect, deny, and investigate the investigators. Even Harry Truman, practically patron saint Democrat on the right, secured all the State department background and loyalty investigation files on subversion and espionage among employees against the United States government at the White House, so congress would be unable to view them, The notion that the Soviet Union would ever “cooperate” or co-exist was a foreign policy blunder of the first water. Thank you. This helps. I want to expand my two cents. I listened for Mom 24-7. It was like a mother listening for her new baby except the baby eventually grows. For Mom, I would hear the dog jump off the bed multiple times a night as Mom went to the washroom. I'd always call out "Rose, are you alright?' And that went on for years. I know all of us would take a deep breath, gird our loins and do it again if needed. But the brain stays on hyper-alert status for years constantly looking for threats. Mine stayed like that through estate hell, calmed only by booze and later edibles. I was under threat. Now things are finally stable. And I think my brain is processing EVERYTHING at once. I've always been anxious but would self-medicate occasionally whenMom was safe and asleep. That was my only vacation. I'm really not a pill person. Posted by: Stateless --- My mother only lived with me for 2 years, and my brother and I had no estate hell or conflict (my brother is the best). I constantly felt like I had no idea what I was doing, that whatever I did would turn out to be wrong. Not because of my mother - she was usually cheerful and often expressed her gratitude to me. (Her neuro made me feel like a shitty caregiver.) I knew I was constantly missing or overlooking things, when I suddenly had to manage 2 people's lives and someone else's financial affairs and medical issues. When I had always been VERY on top of things for myself. Even after she is gone I constantly have the feeling I'm forgetting things (and this is not just a feeling, it is often true). Now it manifests in work stress and in anxiety about taking care of the house (which I am now trying to resolve a lot of problems with). The other day he told me how he went to the store wearing a furry winter hat and a woman smiled at him and said "I love your hat!" He was very pleased because the woman was attractive and couldn't help but observe "I'll probably be back on the market soon. Nice to know I can still work my magic with the ladies." I *know* the worry is making things worse and clouding my (already poor) judgment. I *know* it's rooted in unbelief. I'm praying about this but my brain still wants to obsess. Anyway, I'm popping my email in my nic if you or others ever want to chat about caregiving and adjusting to life after caregiving ends. I always love to hear from 'rons and 'ettes. I'm very happy for your father. And the best for your mother. I can only imagine how difficult it was for him. But he's still caring for her. It doesn't mean he loves her less. And it must be such a deep relief for him. Like a very deep exhale. Mom and I had great years together. Doesn't mean it didn't take a toll. Posted by: Stateless at March 14, 2026 10:32 AM (Sco7b) 213

For me, my daughter was deathly ill for about 4 years. She's over that for a couple years now (though there are still occasional rough spots, but not life or death stuff, thank G-d).
I can tell you, in this scenario, the stress reaction doesn't really end. It's not constant, and it's much easier to manage. But I think even if a fairy godmother wove a wand and said "she is cured, go forth and worry no more," that hypervigilance would still hang around like a phantom limb. I think that fear of doing something wrong or missing something for the person you're looking after probably sticks around forever, and the best you can do is remind yourself it's not really rational anymore and there are other things you need to do now. I helped my parents *once* with my grandparents overnight and it was exhausting. It took 3 70 year olds to watch them or 4 50 year olds. It definitely isn't something the weak can accomplish, but even the strongest get worn down. Doing it alone is the action of a saint. Once again, I'm very sorry I hadn't realized your situation and missed the chance to help you be prepared for the after effects. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at March 14, 2026 10:35 AM (lFFaq) 216

Anxiety. What are the methods, natural and /or prescription, that others here who have suffered anxiety used to assuage or eliminate this problem? Mostly interested in natural methods, but do any prescriptions really address this? I've recently been overcome with this. A cascade of family issues and..... my beloved dog died. Argh. I'm very happy for your father. And the best for your mother.
Posted by: Stateless at March 14, 2026 10:32 AM (Sco7b) --- Thank you. I should clarify that my parents are divorced and my actual mother has a very fraught relationship with me and by extension the family. This is quite surprising and if you asked me when I was a teenager, who would be the better grandparent, I'd have insisted without hesitation it would be Mom. My father is often distant, doesn't express a lot of emotion, and is even worse than I am (if possible) in going on about a topic of interest to no one but himself. He's mellowed with age, however, and is more interesting in listening than talking. My conversations with him are a blessing. I was not close to my stepmother. It wasn't her fault. She's a nice lady and my wife and kids love her. But Dad remarried about the same time my mother did, and her choice was...poor. She'd also gone through two boyfriends by then, so my stepmother was sort of caught in the emotional blast radius. I've had some interesting talks with Dad about what no-fault divorce did to children who had to live through it. I don't think he ever thought about it. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. I think it is one thing to be foolish in uncharted territory. The difference now is that the evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. There is no possible way for their policies to work. VMom mentioned "box breathing" while holding a positive thought/image. It helps to have the positive thing pre-decided as it may be difficult to come up with one in the moment of need. Prayer definitely helps. Also, pre-choosing a hymn or praise chorus. You can just hum it if you don't like your singing voice. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at March 14, 2026 10:44 AM (lFFaq) 227

Posted by: Derak at March 14, 2026 10:37 AM (cZ6Sn) Check with your family doctor. Mine has me on longer term stuff and a few for panic attacks. I have done 5000 hours of meditation, but when so many things hit at once. I would have preferred natural things also. But that just led to booze and edible pills. The pills helped but I was getting used to them. And while I could hold my booze, it wasn't helping. I have an 14 year old dog that needs me. Stateless, in the last decade of his life, my husband went from radiation for prostate cancer, which seemed to pitch him down the stairs of Parkinson's, then dementia. He finally died with covid, so I wasn't even allowed to be with him.
It was hard caring for him when he no longer knew who I was. But he still trusted me. I used to tell him stories of his own childhood, and he listened like a child. I still get angry at how limited he was at the end--for his sake, not mine. This was a man who once designed radar systems for fighter planes. I think it takes years to move on. I'm still weeping as I write this. Posted by: Wenda at March 14, 2026 10:47 AM (wPfxR) 230
