First World Problems...

It's all fun and games until your fingers get frostbite from the freezing glass!

Specifically, my left thumb gets very, very cold when I hold my glass at the top of the stem or around the bowl. Sure, I could hold it part way down the stem, or even by the base, but that is less stable, less pleasant, and slows my drinking, and thus my enjoyment.

I have considered many solutions, including wearing gloves, using insulated glasses (they are horrendously ugly!), or simply burning the house down every evening during cocktail hour so as to have a source of warmth for my left thumb.

None of these are optimal. I could also switch to hot drinks (yuck..almost as bad as a shaken Manhattan), or even forego cocktails altogether and start with wine.

But that is bowing to primitivism, and I will not give in!

I forgot to take a picture of my drink last night (A Manhattan!), so I had to resort to the internet.

That glass has a wider base than my cocktail glasses, so it is easier to insulate one's fingers from the cold.

15 My wife only drinks Sauvignon Blanc, and keeps a bottle in the frig. She then pours it into a "wine glass" about as thick as a brick and room T. I've explained to her that thermal equilibration is detracting from her experience, but apparently the words I've used are too long, because she continues as before. However, she recently somehow broke a couple of them, so I've replaced them with more suitable white wine glasses. We'll see if she notices a difference.

One solution, especially after the 3rd or 4th, is to use your hands to pin the base of the glass to the table, which is probably spinning and unsteady. Then use your sonar to maneuver your mouth to the rim of the glass. After three or four attempts, you will get the hang of it. Then simply slurp, lap, and sip until you have consumed the beverage, clearing the way for the next round. I hope this helps.

1. Yes, if made from raw iron, which they are not.

2. I also saw double glass insulated cocktail glasses but they are bulkier.

Personally, if I really felt the need for them, I would go for the metal ones. We pre-chill our martini glasses in the freezer and it doesn't take us forever to finish enjoying them.

81 1st world problem I recently solved was my 1999 Ranger had no appropriate surface on which to attach a smart phone, because, 1999. I have a selfie stick someone gifted me a few years back, and made a few attempts to secure it, but no dice.

Driving back from my favorite local cigar store last week, my eyes caught the spare 12V outlet just to the right of the radio and it occurred to me that it would accommodate a wine cork. This was confirmed shortly after arriving home. (No, I did not open and consume a full bottle of wine for the cork, and anyway, shut up...)

Next, I removed the smart phone bracket from the selfie stick by unscrewing the locking collar from the stick's ball joint. The collar was narrower than the cork, but a bit of whittling from a sharp knife solved that issue. I slipped the bracket socket over cork and a couple turns of the locking collar secured it firmly to the cork.

Supah genius*...

The stem is there for temperature management of the drink. Gripping the stem allows you to drink without your skin temperature warming up the martini. Otherwise, in order to have a properly cold martini you would be tempted to gulp it down like an uncivilized savage.

We had a freak snowstorm in Seattle on Friday.

Two ounces of vodka-I like Costco's French imported-with a splash of a less peaty scotch, like Glenmorangie. By a splash I mean less than 1/8 of an ounce. I never measure. Stir the vodka with ice and pour into a glass before you add the scotch. Then add the olives. Not sure if the scotch "floats". It adds a taste but does not overwhelm the vodka.
