Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - March 10, 2026 [Doof]

doof-open-road.jpg

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Tuesday night ONT. Very nice springtime weather in my neck of the woods today. How about you? Anything fun and exciting going on with anyone here tonight? Something on your mind? Let's hear it!

***

Let's learn more about Jimmy's!

Here's a clip from Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives (Triple D) from 2014

My sister was at Jimmy's for dinner tonight with her husband and daughter. My niece was very excited that she saw an influencer there interviewing someone from the staff. Still amazing how much attention and business they are getting thanks to the Huff Post. I haven't been there since the "GFY heard 'round the world". Hopefully soon!

Not quite Somali daycare levels of fraud, but fraud nonetheless

Woman admitted to making more than 1,700 fraudulent Home Depot returns, prosecutors say

A woman in Ohio made more than 1,700 fraudulent returns at Home Depot locations in multiple states.

Medina County prosecutors said Tracy A. James used counterfeit driver’s licenses and aliases to obtain store credit through fraudulent merchandise returns over several years at numerous Home Depot locations.

***

Investigators said James’s scheme totaled $266,699 in fraudulent store credit she then used to buy merchandise she later resold online.

We 29 year-olds have an advantage?

Psychology says the hidden advantage older workers have in the age of AI has nothing to do with technology skills. It’s emotional intelligence.

AI can generate a perfect email but it cannot read the room, sense the tension, or know when the real conversation is the one nobody is having

Have you ever watched a twenty-six-year-old try to figure out why a meeting went sideways when every word spoken in the meeting was perfectly reasonable? I have. I spent decades in workplaces where the official conversation and the actual conversation were two entirely different things, and the ability to tell them apart had nothing to do with intelligence or technical skill. It had to do with years.

***

That ability has a name. Psychologists call it emotional intelligence. And in 2026, as AI reshapes nearly every industry on the planet, it turns out that the thing older workers have been quietly accumulating for decades is the one thing the machines can’t replicate.

Very interesting article. Definitely check it out.

Did she consult Piper?

I inherited a storage unit from a family friend. It was full of vintage clothes, which I now sell online.

My best friend is Hannah, and her grandpa, Franz, owned a sporting goods store in the '60s, '70s, and '80s. When he went out of business, he boxed up his stock, and the unused items sat in a storage unit from 1990 until 2021.

In the summer of 2021, Hannah's mom called my mom, who is an organizer for hoarders, asking for help with the storage unit. She didn't know what to do with the stuff, and knew my mom had experience in that realm.

***

It's really hard to put a number on how many items were in the storage unit. It was 10,000 pairs of shoes, 25,000 hats, 2,500 pairs of baseball pants, all in 1,000 square feet, all from a single store.

The brands Franz had were Nike, Adidas, Puma, Converse, Playboy, Pony, Champion, Wilson, and more. Teams were covered in the NFL, NBA, NHL, and collegiate sports.

***

It was such a large inventory; we weren't sure how to tackle it. It's all been very word-of-mouth. We had our first sale at a flea market in early 2022. We currently sell privately on social media and on our website, which went live in December 2025.

On the website, we do 25 items per drop, and do two drops a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays. It's first-come, first-served. Not all merchandise is on the website; it's about a tenth of what we have. So we're really selective with the drops because everything is so rare and special.

Cool story. Like, totally rad!

20 Does anyone else think that nearly every bit of information we are told about anything any more is phony unless it comes out of an actual civilian whether it comes from the "left" or "right"? For a few days all we heard was oil crisis. It went up to $110 a barrel and the stocks drop. Trump casually says in an interview that oh, he thinks the war won't go on much longer. Immediately oil drops to $88 a barrel and the stocks jump up. I have never seen this sort of thing before, ever

Posted by: Azjaeger at March 10, 2026 10:06 PM (3/XaG)

21 It just may take eight decades of utter repression and the backing of the world's only remaining free nation.

And what free nation do you expect to be around after the next decade or so?

Trump 2.0 is Doing All The Things because his presidency ends this time next year.

There will never be another like him, so he is trying to give We The People the most runway he can give us by taking down Venezuela, Iran and possibly China as immediate threats before he leaves the scene.

40 Hi Horde, to your planet...welcome!

I have a car question. I retarded at the end of December, and since then I've barely driven my car at all. Maybe 20 miles, when my weekly commute was 200.

I start it up every few days, just to make sure it starts, so far so good.

My question is what might happen to the gasoline? I filled up January 2nd and I'm not even down an eighth of a tank. Might the gas coagulate, or turn into delicious candy? Should I do more driving just to make sure stuff circulates?

I know next to nothing about cars. I kind of know how to drive and that's much of the extent.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

“Turns out back in World War II, the living heart of the Frankenstein's monster ended up in Japan right before the bomb was dropped. Over time, the radiation caused the heart to mutate into a real boy. A boy that starts rapidly growing into a giant now known as Frankenstein. The creature escapes and ends up battling the giant monster Baragon. And in the alternate ending of the film, he also battles a giant octopus, just like in the original Shelly novel.”

Frankenstein vs Baragon (1965). Sounds awesome, even without the giant octopus.

For Trump, he cares about the consumer, with every president before him, they hated the consumer and thought that was an added sadistic benefit to their war grift.

Looked it up - that one was in the 1840 Sacred Harp collection of Southern Hymns, which I’ve got a copy of somewhere. It’s an amazing collection of hymns, especially since most of them never made their way into the mainstream churches. (Too countrified, I think)

Sacred Harp is the most well known use of shaped note music, where the relative pitch of the note is indicated by its shape. Sounds tricky, but if you know music it’s not hard to pick up at all.

Yes, gas goes bad. As the lighter fractions evaporate, the gasoline starts to no longer act like gasoline, sorta like a wet cigar - hard to light. As well, the heavier fractions wind up coating parts with "varnish" which blocks smaller passages. There are things called fuel stabilizers which will prevent this. The best-known brand is probably Sta-Bil, but I prefer Pri-G.
Oil goes bad, too, just sitting around. Next oil change make sure to go to full synthetic,it takes longer to break down and oxidize.

I faced the same situation when I retired. You may want to take it out for a long drive (half hour) once a week and try to do some highway miles. Burn off some gas, get it down to 3/4 tank and then fill it up to mix the old and the new gas.

163 "Their own" is the issue with that sentence. He's "ours," not "theirs," and it chaps their hide.

Most Congress critters aren't there for the power (some absolutely are), many just to be podcasters (Cruz, Crocket), many just want the status and the loot.

When Trump came in and said "We Are Going To Do All The Things", at first they thought that he was gas lighting the constituents and would continue the grift with the donor class and the cocktail circuit.

Then he did things. Like close the border, instead of mouthing "comprehensive immigration policy". Reshoring jobs as opposed to helping congress critter cronies exploit foreign labor and lax regulations. Trump was cutting into their grift, showing that it was easy to follow through on promises Congress had been making and breaking for generations.

He exposed them all as frauds, and now that they are known, they are just open about it and dare you to do something about it, knowing we will whine and not lynch.

Pretty much nothing, I have a pimped out M4 Max, I can run my dev setup, I can run a vm of win11 to access the apps that have no mac or linux ports like Autocad*, Visio and MS Project, it runs seamlessly integrated, no hickups, no slowdown, the only ai slop on the mac is injected by the win11 and win apps.

Mac make the best all around laptops out there.

Canceled their insurance they did.

Kind of risky to run the Strait with $100M in crude and a ship that costs many times that when islamonazi pirates are threatening to blow everything up... but then the ships idle costs start adding up and the crews figure out they can just turn off their tracking devices and not paint that target on their backs...

I faced the same situation when I retired. You may want to take it out for a long drive (half hour) once a week and try to do some highway miles. Burn off some gas, get it down to 3/4 tank and then fill it up to mix the old and the new gas.

Right. Also it circulates the grease and oils on all the parts that move. (a necessary thing) And things tend to flatten under the same pressure. At once a week your tires will develop a flat spot - a block or two and they will soften up but that's an example.

223 Sacred Harp is the most well known use of shaped note music, where the relative pitch of the note is indicated by its shape. Sounds tricky, but if you know music it’s not hard to pick up at all.

Will have to look it up.

In the last 10yrs I had a wish to play the harp...a big one. Now I'm back to a lap harp...which I know has nothing to do with what you are mentioning.

We had a harp at our wedding almost 47yrs ago on St. Patrick's Day (the only day of my dude's college spring break...we didn't choose it). Altho Irish is our only common ancestry. The harp was due to it being a botanical garden wedding and a piano could not be played. As it turned out I was glad.

So when y'all raise a beer next Tuesday think of the poor man who has been stuck with me all these years.

225 My question is what might happen to the gasoline? I filled up January 2nd and I'm not even down an eighth of a tank. Might the gas coagulate, or turn into delicious candy? Should I do more driving just to make sure stuff circulates?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Assuming a recent-ish car (say since 1990) and a mostly-full tank, you should be good for a couple of years, That being said, other parts of the car need to be exercised periodically. Maybe every second month, take it on a 50 mile road trip just for funsies.

Texas is a perfect example. DC runs Hunt in on the primary to split the vote (just like they did with Gohmert) They spent $70 million just to do that.

Now they are spending over a million dollars a day to make sure that everyone in TX knows that Paxton is a low down weasel and Big John Wayne McCornyn is the man for the job.

McCornyn and Thune take turns top and bottom with each other.

Yep. Funny thing is that just after that purchase (tail light bulbs), my daughter's car battery conked out in the next door parking lot, so we bought a new battery for it - at a different store - those five-year batteries are pretty pricey...

A computer that can happily run Win7 or newer will run faster on Linux Mint. I see they sell for 20 bucks on Amazon (same as in town, LOL). At that price, it's hardly worth the effort to download the ISO and burn it to a new thumb drive. They will tell you that you are not buying the OS. You are buying the physical thumb drive, and paying for the seller's expertise in loading a bootable copy of the Mint OS onto it.

You can pop the thumb drive into a USB port, hit the power button, and when it gets to the boot sequence part of the BIOS, tell it to boot from the thumb drive. Mint will start, running from the thumb drive, instead of your computer's hard drive. You can play with it, try it out, and if you like it, press "install". You have the option of partitioning the hard drive, and putting Mint in one partition, and keep your old Windows in the other. I have never done this. I usually simply put Mint on a new or salvaged hard drive that has been wiped clean, and keep Windows on the old drive.

Yeah, it's not a 100% thing, but in the vast majority of cases, it is. In my case, my dominant hand difference is almost an inch, my left is only a little over a half inch. My wife, daughter, and sister fingers are.within an eighth of even. 12 years ago, when I first read this, I had a bunch of cow-orkers (at lunch) put their hands flat on the table. 7 guys had shorter (by a minimum of a half inch) index fingers and both women's fingers were even.

Posted by: Tarbender at March 11, 2026 01:38 AM (rdVOm)

From what I read women with hands like that may have had greater exposure to male DNA in the womb. Look at the bright side, its probably why you're good with cars. It doesn't make you a dude.

Hey, lady... how are ya?

Posted by: Tarbender at March 11, 2026 01:45 AM (rdVOm)

301 While we're talking about computers, for my next one I want another laptop, but powerful. I'm planning on going back to school for a second degree -- yes, at the advanced age of "almost 29" -- to get back into tech, but with firmer credentials, and fully refreshed and expanded skills. So a cheapo "student-grade" laptop wouldn't cut it; although it would be for student work, I expect that technical subjects need performance. (I've narrowed it down to computer science, electrical engineering, and business information systems, as I have entry-level experience in each, but just a plain ol' math degree.)

But I also want to learn the various guitars -- electric bass, acoustic-electric, and "regular" electric -- while getting my voice back into shape, and transferring my old classical piano skills into rock synth. (Just for personal satisfaction, not expecting to monetize it.) I would be recording into a DAW, so I'm thinking maybe a MacBook Air, for silent operation (no fan for a mic to pick up)? It would be my first non-Windows machine, but it sounds like the MS OS has only gone downhill since 10, into an Indian Spaghetti/AI Slop nightmare. Would the Air suffice for both needs?

303 Much obliged Tarbender, enjoyed a beautiful day here, over 70 and it melted a lot of the snow, back to cooler weather tomorrow. I am doing ok, thanks, I hope that you are holding up under the current stress in your life.

Glad to hear you're out of the freezer! Wow, 70*?

We just got another cold/windy snap and it snowed a bit today (didn't stick). Expect some overnight as well. Weather is just guesswork, so will look out the window when I wake & see. LOL.

Mostly, if not all. Using Geek Bench numbers (yes, yes, they don't tell you everything but they are good for relative comparisons). Apple silicon is so excellent right now. The current(ish) Intel and AMD flagship CPUs on these benchmarks are matched by the M5. The M5 Pro and M5 Max nuke them without getting up.

The Qualcomm X2 Elite CPUs are just coming to market and they are going to slot in around the M5 and M5 Pro CPUs. If you are sticking with Windows, the OS, ARM, and general software stack is really coming together - it is viable now. I am currently running a Gen 1 Plus version in my Surface Pro, it has been nothing but great.

TLDR.
Apple silicon is world class and so are the machines; they are on my radar bigly. The Mac Mini is one of the best deals in computing.

Windows with Qualcomm CPUs, especially the Gen 2s are for real. The software compatibility is fine and is improving all the time. Windows is Windows, you either like it or absolutely pathologically hate it these days. YMWV.

ARM CPUs is where it is at. That is the story.

313 I won't run off, Braenyard, I am going to sit and sip for a while. When I was putting the trash out this morning I was stunned by how many tiny pieces of glass are scattered all over the street and the driveway, They are not sharp, just teeny colorful pieces of glass. I wonder if the town mixed the glass in with the salt and sand to treat the the roads with the last storm. Maybe the glass helped the mixture from clumping together or something. It is very pretty but I definitely tracked some of it into the house.

316 Meanwhile, in Babylon DC, Prince William County Board of Supervisors had an upset happen, election wise. The GOP lady won. Apparently the Dem had a record of racist and antisemitic remarks that didn't play well in the very blue Prince William County. The Dems name is Muhammad 'Sef' Casim. Hard to believe a progressive muslim would be so racist. LOL! A minor thing. VA is still lost.

320 272 Always look at their fingers. The fingers tell all. A man's index finger is shorter than their ring finger. A woman's index finger is the same length as their ring finger, or real damn close.

Thanks! I was still thinking of ARM as something for embedded/mobile. From there to high-performance laptops is quite the climb. That gives me a clearer idea of what to compare with which when it comes time to pull the purchase trigger.
