THE MORNING RANT: About That “Bad” Jobs Report - Government Employees & Foreign-Born Workers Hardest Hit

Economic prognosticators were caught by surprise with the Department of Labor’s February report showing a loss of 92,000 non-farm jobs. Nominal job growth was expected. (“U.S. Loses 92,000 Jobs in Widespread and Unexpected Downturn” – Wall Street Journal)

• Those 92,000 non-farm jobs that were lost include about 10,000 government employees.

• An undetermined number of NGO (non-governmental organization) workers whose funding has been cut off by Trump/DOGE were among those lost jobs too. These are jobs that conservatives have long advocated for elimination.

• The cold weather in February caused over 200,000 people to be unable to work.

• According to the Office of Personnel Management, Trump / DOGE has eliminated 264,000 federal jobs since he took office in January 2025. That is about 11% of the federal workforce taken off the government payroll in barely a year.

• Over the past year, employment of native-born Americans is up significantly. I get differing results based on whether we are talking about within the past 12 months or since Trump’s inauguration, but there are hundreds of thousands more native-born US citizens with jobs.

• Employment of foreign-born workers in the US is down over 500,000 since Trump’s inauguration.

• If all the fretting about the fragility of the economy were real, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell would have reason to finally cut interest rates, but he won’t. (Of course this is also driven by Powell’s partisan animus to Donald Trump. Powell is an Obama/Biden loyalist who, in my opinion, seeks to harm the Trump presidency. The end of his disgraceful tenure in two months will be a breath of fresh air.)

With the changes that President Trump is making by prioritizing US citizens over non-citizens, and by prioritizing taxpayers over tax recipients, there are obviously going to be some economic disruptions. But these are also necessary, and they are disruptions that we conservatives have been seeking for decades.

Isn’t it funny how all the “economic conservatives” of NeverTrump who have preached in favor of smaller government for decades keep sneering that Donald Trump is not a “true conservative,” even though President Trump is the first Republican in my lifetime to actually slash the federal government upon taking office?

Climate Realism Rising

The Heartland Institute is holding its 16th International Conference on Climate Change next month, featuring a who’s who of the leading scientists and climate realists who have been educating the public on the reality of the climate hoax.

As a proud “climate denier” I will once again be attending and reporting on the conference. It is at the Hotel Washington in Washington DC on April 8th and 9th. I met several Ace of Spades readers at the previous climate conference in 2023 and I know that some of y’all will be in attendance this year. If so, I’d be delighted to shake your hand.

Climate communism seemed like an unstoppable force just a few years ago. The scientists who pushed back against media censors and government agencies pushing “net zero” are brave people who risked their reputations and livelihoods. They are heroes to me, like all the brave souls who have fought authoritarians and communists throughout the ages.

Here is a link with more information if you are considering attending. I’d be delighted to see you there.

33 PPP poll of Cornyn in Texas:

"Our first Hegar-Cornyn poll of 2020 bears a strong resemblance to our first Beto O’Rourke- Ted Cruz poll of 2018. In that poll Cruz lead 45-37, an 8 point lead similar to Cornyn’s starting out point. We pinpointed then that the race might end up close because Cruz had just a 38% favorability rating- and that’s a lot better than the 27% Cornyn starts out with here.

After O’Rourke won the nomination and became better known over the course of the year, he was able to build the race into a tossup. Hegar (who currently has just 34% name recognition) is likely to do the same in the months ahead if she wins the nomination."

From 2020.

He won by 12.

In 2020, black turnout reduced significantly in TX because the white lady (MJ Hegar) won over the black man (Royce West).

Those blacks that will vote will vote heavily Democrat.

But there will be far fewer of them.

Because Senate races are, the vast majority of the time, just reflections of overall PVI of the state because it drive turnout up (2020 was helped by it being an actual presidential election year as well).

72 Now, if we can just get the number of government-funded NGOs - how's that for an oxymoron, government-funded NON governmental organization - to zero, we'll not only accomplish the task of reducing government drones on the payroll (all the employees servicing those grants), but we'll be strangling all those components of the leftist machine.
In the old days, machine politics were run by a machine built around partisan political operators in government jobs, where their duties ranged from 90% "real"/10% party to 0.1% "real"/99.9% party. Today's machines are hidden in NGOs and the Ds have refined that system to almost perfection, to the detriment of both good government and liberty.
We have to make the words "government grant" a pejorative.

Good. Humiliating Congress needs to become routine now. They abdicated all their authority and public trust, which are closely linked.

He's been governing by executive order as it is - shutting off their ability to do anything besides his bidding is the logical and necessary next step. For him or any other President.

Congress is a joke.

Next branch to obviate is the judiciary.

The populists shouldn't be the only faction in this country that still pretends this is a representative republic.

84 I mentioned this on Friday. Found the actual story.

THE IRONY: Nashville Reporter Arrested by ICE is an Illegal Alien 📉🚔

A major story is breaking out of Tennessee that highlights the uncompromising nature of current immigration enforcement. Estefany Rodriguez-Florez, a reporter for Nashville Noticias who frequently utilized her platform to criticize ICE, has been arrested by the very agency she covered. The reason? She has been living in the U.S. illegally for years.

While she presented herself as a local journalist, federal records reveal a blatant disregard for U.S. immigration laws dating back to 2021.

Rodriguez-Florez entered the U.S. from Colombia on March 10, 2021, on a standard 14-day tourist visa.

Rather than departing as required, she remained in the country for five years without any lawful status, eventually landing a job reporting for a local Spanish-language outlet.
(cont.)

Posted by: rickb223 at March 09, 2026 11:28 AM (oKJ0C)

85 ICE agents intercepted her on March 4 during a targeted operation. She was apprehended right next to her "Nashville Noticias" branded vehicle.

Legal advocates for Rodriguez-Florez quickly filed a court claim in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, alleging that agents acted without a warrant. However, federal authorities have shut down that narrative with the facts.

ICE confirmed to BorderHawk News that officers possessed an administrative warrant at the time of the arrest.

95 Hopefully President Trump and his administration will continue creating opportunities for the Federal workforce to find work in the private sector. Hopefully the states will follow suit.

Speaking of state government workers, this is an excerpt from whiny leftist Scott Alexander's post opposing the passage of California's "wealth tax:"

"On one level, it’s no surprise that California, a state full of bad socialists, is considering bad socialist policy. But I think this is the wrong perspective. This proposition isn’t being sponsored by some generic group of Piketty-reading leftists. It’s the project of SEIU (Service Employees International Union) a union of mostly healthcare workers."

Scott is suggesting that the intersection of the set of bad socialists and the set of SEIU members is empty. More likely, the SEIU is a subset of the bad socialists, along with the AFT and NEA.

He also recommends that, instead of a wealth tax that inconveniences tech billionaires, unrealized capital gains should be taxed on death. Tech billionaires win; regular people's heirs lose.

There's a disconnect that no one really seems to focus on.

The left insists that illegally being in the country is a civil matter. It's true. (Crossing the border illegally is a criminal matter, but that's something else.)

So, the administration is using civil remedies in the form of administrative warrants and deportation. Those are the civil remedies.

But then the left is insisting on criminal due process.

People kind of talk around the disconnect, but no one really seems to face it head on.

It's also just an obvious underhanded move at the same time.

People hear "civil" and think of fines. So, the only appropriate response to civil infractions is to fine someone.

Except, it's in the US code that the civil remedy for illegally being present in the United States is deportation. That is the civil remedy.

It needs to be made explicit more.

The capitol city is recession proof. For the political class and their hangers on. Anyone in that area that's been laid off was so far down the food chain as to be nearly worthless. Politically. The Left is a cancer, our garbage uniparty political leaders have allowed if not encouraged the cancer to metastasize.

Iran is an example. We are all going to suffer Biden era hyperinflation once again because high energy costs are the price of dismantling an energy producing state.

Demographic shifts is another. For a generation or two the same garbage political leaders have brought in H1B by the tens of millions to replace Americans. That tumor also needs to be taken out and the chemo for that is disruptive.

On February 26, 2026, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to revise its analysis for distinguishing between employees and independent contractors under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Specifically, the Department is proposing to rescind a 2024 rule on that topic which it is no longer applying in its investigations and replace it with a streamlined analysis, backed by federal judicial precedent, that will provide greater clarity and predictability to workers and employers alike as to their proper classification.

253 FWIW

Over the last ~20 years (approximately FY 2005–2025), total H-1B petitions approved likely exceed 6–7 million. This rough estimate comes from averaging ~300,000–350,000 annually across the period (lower earlier, higher recently), multiplied by 20 years. For context:From FY 2007–2017 alone: ~2.63 million approvals (USCIS trend data).
Pre-2007 and post-2017 add substantial volume, with approvals roughly doubling since ~2000 (from ~180,000/year to ~400,000/year).
Note: These are approvals (petitions granted), not unique individuals (one person can have multiple approvals over time) or strictly "visas stamped" at consulates (which are lower, as many H-1B workers extend status domestically without new visa stamps).

H1s are paid pretty well. Problem is that their culture doesn't understand quality, craftsmanship, ingenuity and ethics. So you get slack-offs who cut and paste from Stack overflow, take AI agents at face value, and couldn't care less if tests cover the code or if they even work.

I have been in the industry for decades, most of my rescue work has to do with dealing with the total disaster messes made by H1B developers. I don't mind because I make good coin on it. But the code that they put out, mostly in the banking, insurance, and manufacturing processing industries is fragile and increasingly prone to cyber attacks - because they just don't care.

265 Over the past year, employment of native-born Americans is up significantly. I get differing results based on whether we are talking about within the past 12 months or since Trump’s inauguration, but there are hundreds of thousands more native-born US citizens with jobs.

Employment of foreign-born workers in the US is down over 500,000 since Trump’s inauguration.

I would be interested in seeing which industries have been affected by this increase in American workers and decrease in foreign-born workers.

Because the IT and tech industries and engineering industries I do not think are seeing this play out. Indians have been taking American jobs by the hundreds of thousands in many industries, especially in the automotive industry. Not only through H-1Bs, but also through outsourcing to India and people from India living in Canada.

BCC (Best Cost Country) policy has been in place at Stellantis since 2021 and thousands of Indians have taken the place of American engineers over the past 5 years. Policy remains in place in my department. Must be 3-4 outsourced BCCs for every local engineer hired.

266 Iran war veterans have no idea how horrible we are going to treat them when they come home

I saw that, and it only begins to be coherent if you assume a ground war. Otherwise nobody's gonna know who was involved with Iran.

272 Mentioned above but with so many contractors doing govt work it’s impossible to know how many employees there really are.

There are companies that exist solely to do govt contacting. Every employee in those companies isn’t a “government employee” but their job exists due only to money spent by the government.

So if the govt fired Joe and the Joe goes work for one of those companies, nothing has changed other than how Joe gets paid. The money is still spent the same.

273 Oh, the Strait of Hormuz is actually still open because captains with millions and millions of dollars of cargo found this one neat trick to slipping past Iran while it can't actually project power?

Weird.

I guess worldwide oil supply won't be affected...at all.

280 I thought WM was OK. At least it was violent and gory rather than dumbed down for a PG audience. I thought it was a Predator reboot with an alien robot rather than an alien humanoid.

_______

Yea, he's physically imposing above the waist, but he's got stick-figure legs judging from that tourniquet he put on his knee. I hate the guy with a passion, but he was at least OK in the role. Temu John Cena.

The alien robot looked gay and was surprisingly incompetent. Good for it, then, that the robot was hunting the dumbest soldiers ever.

284 I have been in the industry for decades, most of my rescue work has to do with dealing with the total disaster messes made by H1B developers. I don't mind because I make good coin on it. But the code that they put out, mostly in the banking, insurance, and manufacturing processing industries is fragile and increasingly prone to cyber attacks - because they just don't care.
Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at March 09, 2026 12:15 PM (BvPIe)

Preach!!

I’m in the same boat, I’ve made a lot of money fixing slop created by them. The cheap H1B ends up costing 3X as much long term. Nobody gets it, or if they do get it they don’t care because itl will be the next CIO’s problem.

I *believe * in probability, so I never gamble, in Vegas or anywhere - I do give the wife $20 to lose watching the pretty dancing lights on the slots - but I used to love to go to Vegas for the entertainment. They've priced me out.
A top shelf call at home would be $6, Vegas $10. Now, well drinks are $25 up. They aren't even interested in the merely affluent, they're going for the big rich.
If there isn't big reset, I predict Vegas will contract by 25% within ten years.

291 There are several Fortune 500 companies where you will not find a single non-Indian in their IT department. From the cio down to entry level tech support it’s Indian.

That’s what 35 years of H1B has produced.
Posted by: Heroq

The H1B program is at fault for a lot of it, but "the cio " in your post is responsible for the 100% part. Dot Indians are amazingly nepotistic and consider any Indian a relative compared to a white (black or asian) guy. Get an Indian in a supervisory position, and watch the number of Indians in the department multiply. BTW, from my experience, competence takes a back seat in these situations.

Posted by: buddhaha at March 09, 2026 01:10 PM (sR2WI)

292 Well, Trump is NOT a "true conservative." He is a liberal.

I think his cutting of government is much less conservative small governmentalism and more business man cutting deadwood. He has basically said so by focusing on waste, fraud, and mismanagement than on "a smaller government is a better government."

Having said that, he LOOKS like a conservative because so many of his actions 1) are WAY to the right of his opposition, and 2) the EFFECTS of his actions are often the same as what conservatives want. And I'll take that any day of the week, over Progressive Republicans, and vociferously over the anti-American, anti-Christian Prog commies in the Democratic party.
