That's Execution Rock in Long Island Sound. It was built 175 years ago as a lighthouse, but the rocks have obviously been there forever, and supposedly were used as a method of execution. Criminals were chained to the rocks at low tide, and....

It's a convenient marker for boaters, and when I used to sail on the Sound we would usually go past it. If anyone knows the area it is between New Rochelle and Glen Cove. The sailing is good...sometimes, but that end of Long Island Sound is known for light airs. For the really fun stuff you have to go out to the other end of the Sound, near where it meets Block Island Sound and then the Atlantic.

Oddly, in spite of the catastrophic rise in sea levels that will inundate the Eastern Seaboard, it looks pretty much the same as it did when the lighthouse was built. Probably some local gravitational vortex and of course the Jooo's Weather Machine keeps it from being flooded.

[Sorry about the music; it's a good song, but I couldn't find anything with "execution in it!]

Go back in time 20 years. Ask any left of center Democrat should we do the things Trump is doing and they'd mostly say yes.

There would be a fair amount of, "Well of course if we could somehow get rid of the Iranian leader without sending in the army..." or...and this would be a fun one..."of course no one supports having men in women's locker rooms...we just want gays to be able to get civil unions!"

The chubby twink, mouth shaped like cocks
catches a case of monkey pox

Flotsam and jetsam, hither and yon
check your pockets, your wallet's gone!

105 I realize that it's better suited for The Gun Thread, but I just came home and had a discussion with Pooky about getting a gun due to a story someone told in my knitting/sewing circle. They had a situation land on their driveway that involved a teen driving erratically without a license and three patrol cars, two of them from the sheriff's department.

I am not a hoplophobe, my only reservation at having a gun in the house is Pooky's mental state. I'm 5-10% unsure if he can withstand the temptation if one's around, even if it's locked up and he doesn't have the combo/key.

Qatar is a constant source of laughs - suddenly they’ve decided to expel all Hamas members from their country. Qatar was fine so long as Hamas was just slaughtering Jewish women and children, but this time Hamas refused to condemn Iran for tossing a couple missiles in Qatar’s direction!

246 John Cale turned 84 today. He was a multi-instrumentalist with The Velvet Underground for their first two albums, before moving on to do his own thing. I don't care for what I sampled of his solo work, so here's a song from the 1967 album "The Velvet Underground & Nico," though this track does not have Nico on it:

Robert Sledge, bass guitarist and backup vocalist for Ben Folds Five, turned 62. No avant-gardeness here, just some nice, accessible piano rock, and he even plays the double bass on this one:

250 Had no idea Country Joe MacDonald did anything after Woodstock. Listened to a few of his songs with the Robert Service lyrics. I like traditional folk music and these fit into that category nicely. They remind me of what other performers have done over the last 40 years: when their music wasn't top 40 anymore, they simplified and went to traditional styles. John Hartford, Kathy Mattea, Michael Martin Murphy come to mind.

I'm on the fence too. I take it in modified amounts.

Saw a video (years ago) from University of CA on how statins help reform the damaged inner walls of artery's. It was quite convincing, slides and all.

If big pharma got its money grubbing out of the way we might get some accurate stats. I think the dosage would go down.

"Democrats vow to shut down Senate over Iran conflict"

Excerpt:

"The Democrats have already filed five different resolutions directing the administration to remove U.S. troops from military hostilities against Iran, and they plan to force Republicans to repeatedly debate and vote on the conflict on the Senate floor.

“As senators we have the right to force a vote and debate every single day in the Senate. That’s not a right under the rules, by the way, granted to us by the majority. That’s a right given to us by the statute,” Murphy said, referring to the 1973 War Powers Act, which Kaine used to force a vote last week on halting military action against Iran."

310 It took 2 days of a week long virus for the faucets to turn off. At one point on Sunday I was going to get Tampax from the guest bathroom and plug each nostril.

I think this was RSV from our baby girl, and it was worse for me than covid years ago.

Now it might go away. My nostrils are chapped and I look like Hillary before she has a gallon of foundation slapped on and her eyebags drained...fresh from her iron lung and drunk.

And I still don't look as bad as Hillary when she thinks she's rockin' it in a pantsuit. All smug and reeking.

I also was reading another blog and I have zero, none, no patience whatsoever for stupid people. Sometimes posting about crap from two years ago (ok, she's super old). Another thinking her weird family is funny (I guess, as I would not admit it and I admit a lotta crap). At the same time this chick is hung up on wealth, which I was raised not to talk about.

On the bright side I am almost normal today and see a path to health again. I knew urgent care would not take me seriously with only a fever of 99 and only on day 4&5 of a virus a baby gave me vs meds that may or may not cure me. I think for viruses that miserable they should offer narcotics.

does the same to ants. It makes them climb up on plants and grab on with their jaws. Then the fungus grows roots out of the ant's feet into the plant, and a "mushroom" grows out of the ant's head and rains spores down on other ants.

March has a R in it so it should be ok for oysters.Which I have never liked my entire life and fresh from the Gulf. I'd rather die than eat a raw one as I am postive it tastes like salty snot, and currently I can manufacture that myself.

My mother would fry them. They were bitter. One of my spankings was over fried oysters. I hated them at 5yrs and had the brilliant idea to stuff my mouth and then spit them in the toilet.

My father, after they watched me do this and not flush, asked me if I cleaned my plate. Yessir I did.

He then explained that I was going to get a spanking (that did not amt to much and were pretty funny) for lying to them, not for eating the oysters.

That spanking was totally worth it because they never asked me to eat them again! A WIN!

319 Ophiocordyceps unilateralis does the same to ants. It makes them climb up on plants and grab on with their jaws. Then the fungus grows roots out of the ant's feet into the plant, and a "mushroom" grows out of the ant's head and rains spores down on other ants.

320 The oceans are NOT rising. What is actually happening is a phenomenon called gravitational compaction. As the Earth's gravity pulls on the very rock beneath us, the rock grows fractionally denser. This actually pulls the rock downward and allows the water to appear to creep up the shore.

I ask you, who here can deny that there are things you could lift easily even ten years ago that are now a struggle to lift?
There are hills you could climb twenty years ago where now you must rest halfway up?
As the earth compacts, its gravitational pull increases, making things appear heavier.

I propose to study the phenomenon of gravitational compaction with an emphasis of determining how to counteract it. A government grant of ... say, 1 billion dollars will at least get me started and I can promise a report in ten or twenty years.

324 Today was a perfect early southern New Mexico spring day (yes, yes, spring is still a few days off). Sunny, high 70s. No wind. To celebrate I took Piglet, the Mighty Honda Trail 125 on a 200 mile ride through small towns, past the farmlands and into the foothills.

Piglet, as usual, managed to get close to the secondary highway speed limit. The truth is she could have went half the speed limit and it wouldn't have mattered because there's no traffic around here.

I would have taken my car but Trump, because he's blowing up Iran, has caused fuel prices to go sky high. Fortunately Piglet gets about about 100 miles to the gallon when I run it flat out which is what you have to do on these types of trips. Total cost for the trip was $6.50.

On the time speed continuum Piglet is a bit challenged. I averaged about 30 mph which allows one the smell of the green chilies so to speak.

I barely made it home alive and promptly fell asleep on the couch. Hours later I arose to type my tale of exploration only exceeded by the Coranado when he came to the Southwest in the mid 1500s. All hail the Piglet, the Mighty Honda Trail 125! Hoorah!

328 My Mom does family tree stuff. A few years back, while investigating some great-great grandparents, she found out that the graveyard where they were buried in is no more. The church had shut down in the 50s and it had been around since the early 1800s. The church graveyard was right next to it. Well, you can't just build over a graveyard, as the movie Poltergeist will attest. The bodies in that graveyard were moved to,,,,Evans City Cemetery. That's the cemetery that was shown in the beginning of Night of the Living Dead. So I can say that I had relatives in a cult classic!! Well, under. Whatever.

Many questions.

I think you need 2 bikes, lol. Ok, a softail can easily handle that. Here's the deal though, unless its really set up you're not going to be happy if you have to do a 300 mile stretch. I'm talking a good seat and most likely a windshield, because the wind will beat you up after a while. The best compromise is a heritage softail. It has leather saddlebags, a real nice seat, a windshield, and ISO mounted floor boards and you can cruise for hours. Continued....

Posted by: Sam Adams at March 10, 2026 02:29 AM (X+xvk)

389 On the other hand, a softail custom is really nice for everything else, and you can put saddle bags, and detachable windshield on it for the longer rides, and just remove the stuff for your 85% riding, and bar hoping, and easy rides. The softail custom has a 21" front wheel, so its a little bit more nimble in the turns and turns easier. The front end is a little bit longer so it tracks really nice on the highway. With that said, you have 2 choices. You can go with the EVO engine softail which was a real reliable bike, and you see ones with low miles, 20k give or take, many times less, and they are cheap. They have carburetors, no injection, so a lot less shit to deal. Fuel injection is nice, but if you so much as change anything on it you're going to have to have it remapped. Target years for the evo softail is 1992-1996. continued..

Not true - I've been doing it for years! Neither of us like okra or spicy sausage, so I just make simple shrimp gumbo. Found a recipe for making foolproof roux by putting flour and oil in a deep pot and baking it in the oven at a low heat for about an hour and a half. Comes out perfect!

Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, AoSHQ's Plucky Wee One - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at March 10, 2026 02:43 AM (SRRAx)

392 Then you have the twin cam engine softail. If you go that route you want 2008-2011. They have 6 speed transmissions, 96 Cubic inch motors, fast and smooth, and the 6 speed is beautiful on the highway. What you want to do in ANY case, is find an older rider, maybe a dude in his 50's or 60's that bought it new, put the cool exhaust and other goodies on it, had it remapped, etc. The reason being is the older dudes have money, they are waaaay better with service of the bike, they don't beat on them, and alot of them didn't put many miles on them. They make a few nice quality changes without going stupid because they're not looking to race, and they are getting older and many decide to either stop riding, or go for a larger bike like a street glide, or road glide. Thats the guy you want to buy the bike from. They already spent the money on the goodies and are usually fanatical with the upkeep.
