Like going to IHOP and not leaving home Posted by: Skip at March 07, 2026 08:05 AM (Ia/+0) --- Nice! Amidst the lamentations (including my own), I do have some good news. Last week I had blood work done and my A1C came back at 5.8. I am officially "pre-diabetic" and barely of out the "normal" window. No meds, just diet and exercise. Based on my metering, my glucose levels are still retreating, so I have every reason to expect that I'll be in normal range when I'm tested again in 90 days. Blood pressure remains a little elevated, but the meds take care of it, though with the weather starting to break, I think I'll crack that when I can start running and biking again. Irreverent story about Eisenhower, but I thought it was funny. There’s a sort of similar tale about General Patton, who once directed a Chaplain during World War 2 to pray for good weather, who raised at least some nominal objections. Patton wasn’t having any of that.
The president ordered his White House staff in a tight arrangement with clearly delineated duties but gave them wide latitude to act. “It was almost scary how much power he delegated to you,” commented Attorney General Herbert Brownell. The special White House organs and their meeting schedules reflected Eisenhower’s desire for order. His cabinet met every Friday, with Eisenhower beginning each meeting by observing a silent prayer. Once, when he forgot the ritual and cabinet secretary Maxwell Rabb slipped a note to remind him, Eisenhower blurted out, “Goddammit! We forgot the silent prayer!” Posted by: Common Tater at March 07, 2026 08:16 AM (oAa51) 27

Morning again, caffeinators,
MisHum's advice at the top of the post is solid. I do nearly all those things every day. The "avoid people" is often difficult, but can be achieved with forethought. I am cleaned, shaved, partly fed, dressed, and still planning to run out to my favorite grill for a coffee and a slice of cake. They don't open until eight am, though, so I've got time. The furry thugs, Dagny the Duchess and Stirling the Duke of Vicksburg, are doing well. The latter is sprawled on a blanket atop the back of the couch. The former is around somewhere in one of her little caves. I'll be sure to check all the closets before I leave so I don't close her into one of them. Actual news about the war in Iran continues to be difficult to come by; this is where it becomes obvious that the so-called “news” business now just reads generic press releases combined with a few things they make up, useless.
But one story does appear to be true; Starmer had announced that he was sending a destroyer, the HMS Dragon to aid in missile defense. However its departure has been delayed for an unknown amount of time because UK dockworkers say their contract only allows them to work from 9-5, no overtime, and no work on weekends at all. I do miss items on the prayer list, but this morning I saw one that stood out to me: friend of Diogenes with brain tumor. I will say a special prayer for the man as it hits home to me. Almost 30 years ago (almost by accident... a long story for another time), I had an MRI and it showed what the doc thought was a cancerous brain tumor. So I had a craniotomy to remove it... surgery scheduled for 12 hours but (praise God) they plucked it out in only 2 hours. They sent the thing to Johns Hopkins pathology lab and their report came back.... "We don't know what it IS," they reported... "But we know it's not malignant." They called it "reactive tissue"... doc's best guess was I had a hard bump on the head as a kid and a resultant brain bleed... the surrounding tissue reacted to the bleed and formed scar tissue. Then years later as an adult my body finally decided to inform me something was there.... the reactive tissue they removed was that scarring. Anyway, big scare as a young man but the Lord was gracious and I'm still here. So I pray for friend of Diogenes... being told you have a brain tumor is terrifying, I know...

Posted by: LinusVanPelt at March 07, 2026 08:26 AM (xT8gx) --- My eldest is a super-narcolept. It manifested in high school, when she became very lazy, fell asleep in class, even in the shower. We ran tests, tried various meds and of course scanned her brain. There were abnormalities in there, and my wife started freaking out, but when we met with the doctor, he laughed it off. He showed us the images on his monitor and then opened a special folder and began to whip through other pictures. Apparently there are lots of things in your skull besides a brain and they don't seem to do anything. He had curated a collection of them. Turns out, there's plenty of room, and this is why (for example) people can get shot or have a spike penetrate the brain and not be seriously affected. The doc went on to say that we don't really know how prevalent it is because healthy people never get scanned, so the samples we have are very skewed. Unless it gets cheap enough that everyone goes in for a routine screening, we'll never really know. Which is yet another reason not to put all your trust in SCIENCE. mornin' all.
Update on a prayer request for young Jasmine. She is the adopted daughter of a friend of a friend. Said friend was visiting last year when he met Jasmine for the first time. She was withdrawn, and kept to herself. My friend was told that she had been rescued from a very abusive environment, and the new blended family (recently married - he has three daughters, she has Jasmine) was desperately trying to help her. No details on what, if any, therapy was pursued. I did pass along a suggestion from Tecumseh Tea (bless you, dear lady). My friend recently told me that he took all of the daughters, along with his eldest daughter, on an RV trip to Vegas. He assigned Jasmine as his copilot, and everyone had a great time. Jasmine was at first a bit skittish at the crowds and the casino noise, but his eldest made sure to be close and hold her hand whenever the other adults were otherwise occupied. So from this telling, it appears that God has surrounded this young girl with an army of angels, and your prayers for her are being heard. May those listed here and whispered elsewhere receive similar affirmation.. Posted by: Joe Kidd at March 07, 2026 08:40 AM (nbLIj) 77

As an aside, while in there, I had an operation to open up my right femoral artery, and got informed I had no flow in my left carotid. No worries, they said... and yet no one suggested I see a cardiologist. I'm remedying that next week. Posted by: MkY at March 07, 2026 08:41 AM (q6tQZ) 80

I used to love IHOP
We used to do the tour, Original Pancake House in Dallas, we found a lesser version in Austin. If we didn't want the wait, IHOP, then occasionally Cracker Barrel, then we found First Watch and frequented there until Covid. Since then, the enshittification has hit all of them with substance abusing wait staff front of the house, illegal aliens in the back of the house, high prices, low grade Sysco sourced food. And we learned about metabolic dysfunction with the high carbs, seed oils, HFCS everywhere. As the Boomers and Gen-X move on, their replacements in management just don't care since everything is numbers and algo driven - plus the labor pool has no work ethic to speak of. OTOH, saving lots of money, food quality is much better, portion control where it should be, and not having to deal with crowds and the diseases they leave behind by making everything at home. Men's breakfast this morning at church. I have to head in early today. Normal breakfast is 14 to 18 men. We're having a missions conference this weekend so the expected turnout is about double that number. Alot of flapjacks to flip this morning. Normally I would come home and take a nap afterwards but besides being the head cook I'm also in charge of church security. There's a women's luncheon scheduled after our breakfast so I will spend the afternoon in the church parking lot. Say a small prayer that nap time waits until after I'm home. I'll catch up on moron wisdom and wit later today. Have a good day and keep your heads on a swivel folks.

What they missed is that the Mainline got woke because the Boomers finally had taken all of the leadership roles and subverted them from within. Younger people fled in droves, and the demographics bear this out. Most of the rump Mainline churches (like United Methodists, Anglicans, etc.) skew very old. They are also rich. Pope Francis was the last hurrah of this liberal theological movement, and the flailing of the USCCB is evidence that they know their days are numbered. There are zero liberal Catholic seminarians today. I'm seeing this play out in my parish, btw. The Mass keeps getting more traditional, more old customs and practices are being restored (even altar rails!) and the liberals hate it. But the kids are eating it up. I disagree. There are capable younger people, but they are hampered by a society that prefers to check boxes rather than reward excellence.
Given the Pixy Limit, it is sort of forces us to communicate in broad stereotypes. Before you were born I operated in a high trust monoculture (yeah, the urban area was a jungle, same as today) in Fly-Over Country. My peers all were in some form of retail outside HS. So we all did our school and worked as soon as the law allowed. Didn't have illegal aliens taking up the gigs; had functional society that didn't integrate criminals and crack-heads, but marginalized them to the prisons or the gutter. For those with college in mind, after hours and summer work would cover a huge chunk of the post HS education, now it is folly to assume it can, and with selective government funding and DEI, work was replaced with scoring social credits. Then the MBAs went to work to enshittify the work place by bringing in the dregs and illegals and expecting HR selected "management" to merely keep them from burning the place down. So good employers can't find good workers (no drug habits) and potential good workers don't have any good models. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at March 07, 2026 09:07 AM (a4flb) 143

Precisely. The younger generation I see coming to Jesus are fleeing the online culture and the values they try to promote. They see the move to Christianity as a respite from all of that, which the liberal theologians have deviously try to frame in Christian doctrine. They have failed miserably not just because even a pedestrian reading of scripture uncovers their deceit, but because it is incompatible with the fundamental tenets of Christianity. You can’t conflate or obfuscate Christian teachings to a person who knows the love of Jesus Christ. It is unceasing and filling your heart with His Holy Sprit occupies what was a big void in your life that led you towards sin. Posted by: Marcus T at March 07, 2026 09:13 AM (MIRqM) 149

I know that you have a tick that forces you to irrationally blame all of your personal woes on an single demographic - as if Rush Limbaugh (Boomer) personally sought you out to destroy your life. And being that you are RC, you categorically reject the Doctrines of Grace so you will hold to a different understanding of the doctrines of Regeneration and Sanctification. But to know those doctrines helps to understand that this has been going on since 2 Peter 2 not since the US won WW2 and the victors had a lot of babies. I'm in engineering and when I was coming up, if you did a good job you could expect a promotion every few years... Now eventually promotions got harder because, obviously, you can only go so high.
But now? I see young kids come in out of college and they do good work and yet wait 5 years or more with no promotion. Posted by: LinusVanPelt at March 07, 2026 09:23 AM Prior to COVID, the "do good work, get promoted" strategy was the norm at Chrysler. At least from the time I started there in 2011. It all changed with the COVID lockdowns. There was a Great Reset. Chrysler laid off all contract engineers and went "lean" for a year or two. Then after the merger and formation of Stellantis, the outsourcing to India and Mexico began. My department of 200 had been 100% in-office, local engineers. Over the past 5 years, it has changed to 75% outsourced to India. In other areas of the company, there are some full departments of 50 people who are all in India or all in Mexico. Our product development department has a policy that for every local engineer in the department, there must be 3-4 cheap outsourced Indians. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at March 07, 2026 09:19 AM (a4flb) --- Keep in mind that my degree is in political science, so just as you speak in broad terms, so I also use shorthand for demographic trends. If you look down using the "30,000 feet view," you see that swings in the electorate are not so much about issues and changing opinions as changes to the electorate itself. This is also apparent in how institutions function, particularly in places like higher education, where gatekeeping may take 20 years for its full effect to be felt. It is undeniable that (for example) liberal Catholicism was very popular among seminarians formed during the 1960s and 1970s. It is now extinct, and partly because of the retirement cliff, the newly ordained are having a much larger impact because there is such a shortage, so instead of remaining vicars for a few years, they are getting their own parishes after only a couple of years. Most of the rump Mainline churches (like United Methodists, Anglicans, etc.) skew very old. They are also rich.“
Having observed this effect in organizations over the years, I’ve concluded that for an organization, having too much money is a far greater curse than having too little. Everyone becomes comfortable with the idea that they can hire everything out, and that they themselves no longer need to do anything at all. I know of a couple of once large local churches that are now essentially little more than funeral parlors with long waiting lists. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 07, 2026 09:32 AM (fSA1n) 183

Or my favorite, there wasn't enough money in the pot for promotion within our own chain, but there was enough scratch for new hires at high entry levels who invariably moved on to higher visibility jobs within the organization.

Organized Bible Studies are overrated. Maybe BSF, just because they don't put up with nonsense. The most promising (but it wasn't) was a regular study from a Systematic Theology book. Its like the classroom only worse, people of all different skill and knowledge levels are in the room and one can only cater to the lowest common denominator for so long. So many just turn into taking turns going around the room reading a handful of passages before letting the person next to you read the next few - then answering some MadLib questions (questions that are pretty much the same week after week, just exchanging the names of a prophet or a city) Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at March 07, 2026 09:35 AM (a4flb) 198

Covid was like a wrecking ball, and even when the lockdowns were over, Mass attendance was low and donations also bottomed out. Add in scandal with the pastor and it was the prefect storm. The replacement Pastor was younger (about my age), much more orthodox, and he began to systematically sweep away the 1970s decorations and return to traditional icons and modes of worship. This did not sit well with the older crowd, who stopped showing up. But the young people love it, and so we're in a place where more people are going, but finances have not yet recovered. I politely declined (we all knew what we wanted), not wanting to waste her time with the spiel. This, apparently, was taken as some sort of personal affront, whereupon the manager was called. I know of a couple of once large local churches that are now essentially little more than funeral parlors with long waiting lists.
The alternative is to be Hip and Cool and then get into a financial death spiral because whatever you were pushing to get them in, you need to keep pushing to get them to stay to cover the mortgage, salaries, and other running expenses. Rich churches don't have that impediment. I kind of like where I'm going now. Pretty low frills. We have a fellow congregant that needed a new septic tank installed and didn't have the wherewithal so the pastor texted a few of us to work something out. We did. It ain't just sitting in the pews for Communal Worship. Faith in Action beats an emotional guitar riff in the post-modern "music" being performed. I am grateful that I have friends who are Evangelical and Catholic and we pray for each other and our families and don't get into arguments about about our traditions. Yesterday I learned from one of them about Saint Charbel who was an Eastern Catholic from and was from Lebanon. I was grateful to learn about his holy man.

A lot of intentional self depreciating humor which of course flies over the heads of the left. Self aware humor, he knows who and what he is and he plays on it. I bet one of the things that grabbed Melania is the man's humor. Posted by: banana Dream at March 07, 2026 09:44 AM (3uBP9) 220

——- I don’t want to add chocolate to my coffee. I prefer to add coffee to my cocoa. Make a big mug of sweet hot chocolate. Several tablespoons of cane sugar, two big tablespoons of cocoa, and a healthy pinch of salt. Milk or half & half is best. Evaporated in a pinch. Whole milk powder ok, dry non-fat is better than nothing, though just barely. To this add a heaping tablespoon of instant or freeze-dried crystals. Even the cheap stuff tastes fantastic here. Mocha! Okay, this is interesting. The five checkboxes for a Just War. The first three are from St. Augustine. The last two were added by St. Thomas Aquinas.
1 Proper intent 2 Right authority (e.g. War Powers Act) 3 Just cause 4 Last resort - give diplomacy a chance 5 Good probability of success. If any one of those does not apply, it is not a Just War. I also have a gentle suggestion for any of our agnostic or atheist friends: years ago a friend suggested me when I was wrestling with these matters that I wake up in the morning and ask God to reveal himself to me, then go through my day keeping my eyes peeled for any signs, and then thank him each evening for the day when I go to bed. I asked her how long would that take for me to get some kind of answer, and she said, and I quote, how the f*** should I know?? Anybody facing cancer, do consider fenbendazole. It has shown great effectiveness in about 50% of the types of solid tumors, including pancreatic, breast, lung, and brain cancers. I first twigged to this when I read the Joe Tippen's blog, "my cancer story rocks". Check it out. It can't hurt and it has helped a lot of people. No side effects. Joe has been in remission from stage 4 lung cancer for I think 5 years now and he was given 3 months to live.

I admit that the vehemence of my arguments can be off-putting, but that is a function of my life experience. I was raised by rebellious parents who despised the faith of their parents (Catholicism and Methodism) and grew up openly mocking religious. I wasn't an atheist. In college I had looked at the debate and felt the Christians had the stronger argument. But I figured God was just a chill dude - a very Gen X mentality. There were moments when faith pricked my conscience, but I never acted upon it until I met my wife and children became an issue.
We both had been feral, but were horrified at having kids as bad as we were. My dog tags tell the story of the faith journey: non-Denom Protestant, Lutheran, RC. I love the Church, and I love the transformation my conversion is still working on me. Now I do snark, but that is the language of my people. Our pastor used "retarded" in his homily last week. We can't help it. And faith has helped my kids succeed in ways I never could, which is an additional blessing and further vindication to m. I want to clarify something. By "succeed" I don't mean material or employment success. I mean succeed in having a moral foundation and structure that keeps them away from sin and gives them strength.
The sins I accumulated during my "lost years" were deeply shameful, and I do not want them to carry that burden. The sacrament of Reconciliation is been greatly comforting to me, helping reform and heal my diseased soul. If such a wretch as I can find consolation, mercy and forgiveness, anyone can. It warms my heart to see my kids staying well away from the things I did, and I sometimes chuckle at what they consider major transgressions. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Mrs. JTB had asked about any updates on the murder of my F-I-L in 2008. After extensive excavation following a strong cadaver dog response in 2023 did not yield a body or remains, an active ongoing search for the convicted pedophile who owned that property had not located him through 2024-25. The local DA was convinced by the existing evidence to issue a 2nd degree murder warrant for the fugitive. Now, after a comprehensive multi-agency investigation the agents in charge have told us they have credible information that the fugitive may have died while on the run and living rough. They will be trying to get a familial DNA match with any John Doe or unidentified human remains, but that is a long shot. If true, this will effectively end the search and F-I-L's body has not been recovered, and barring someone stumbling over a shallow grave somewhere in the vast SLV, likely never will be. Justice is now in God's hands.

I have a religious question. I believe in asking for the intercession of Saints.
Intercessory prayer doesn't know boundaries, same way that it doesn't when we pray for one another in this temporal life. Patronage does not restrict a saint's intercession but highlights a relationship - not a limitation. From what I understand, most patronages are not assigned but occur organically. I have a religious question. I believe in asking for the intercession of Saints. They often seem to have their areas they're known for, but if I ask Saint Charbel to intercede for a family member needing a job is he going to "say". , "That's not my purview. Please talk to St .Joseph down the hall."?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 07, 2026 10:10 AM (yZ9w I see intercessary prayer as similar to asking friends/neighbors to pray for you. You're asking forba favor, so you're probably better off asking it of somebody you have a good relationship with than a total stronger. Of course, there are some saints who were given specifically jurisdiction (eg St. Anthony for lost items.) Seeking them out is ainm to seeking out an expert for your problem. If your toilithe doesn't flush, you will consult a plumber, not an electrician. Also remember that the saints are intercessaries-- they are a messenger between you and God, they are not independent actors with the ability to solve your problems on their own. The series started in 1962 with three volumes and over the last 60 years has expanded to 5 volumes, 4a and 4b. The supposedly IRS-trained clerk at first said, "You made above our limit," until I pointed out my gross income, more than $5K below their line. Then she looked over my papers and told me I had too many forms, it would take more than half an hour, and she couldn't help me. "If I can cobble this together in pencil," I said, "you can put it into your computer system just like that. I don't want you to submit the form, just check my answer." But no dice. I asked why she couldn't have told me this on the phone when I called and described my situation. A shrug was my answer. This week I'll mail the return. If I've made a mistake, I'm more than sure the IRS will tell me. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 07, 2026 10:28 AM (wzUl9) 323

There is a theory that we know that Xi has ordered the invasion of Taiwan for 2027
The theory you're referring to appears to stem from a combination of U.S. intelligence assessments about China's military modernization goals and recent geopolitical analyses linking U.S. military actions in Venezuela and Iran to broader deterrence strategies against China. I'll break this down based on available reporting and discussions, focusing on what is substantiated versus speculative. [ . . . ] In summary, the "theory" has roots in real intelligence on China's 2027 readiness goals and ongoing debates about U.S. strategy, but it's overstated — the 2027 timeline is about potential capability, not a confirmed invasion order, and U.S. moves in Venezuela and Iran are multifaceted (involving regime change, counterterrorism, and energy security) rather than solely Taiwan-focused. If these actions are meant as a "demonstration," it's indirect and part of a larger "peace through strength" approach to raise costs for China. For the latest developments, ongoing monitoring of U.S.-China dialogues and PLA activities would be key. Grok: https://bit.ly/4aWGTBH Posted by: Clyde Shelton at March 07, 2026 10:36 AM (P5BPp) 345

The CCP wants Taiwan back, and while people keep talking about how patient the Chinese are, that doesn't apply to Communists. They want unification yesterday, and may have the self-awareness to know that their demographic collapse is going to make a war harder and harder to sustain.
So there was always something of a race against time in that respect, though for a while it seemed offset by what seemed to be inevitable American decline. I remain convinced that the best time for China to attack was 2023 or 2024 at the latest. During covid the fam and I were getting stir crazy. Florida was starting to open a little. So we planned a week down there. Mostly Universal and seaworld. You got your own cabana type setup by this big wading pool with some sea creatures in it. Felt good. But we also scheduled a dolphin "experience". These are normally very expensive but with things shut down the prices were very reasonable.
We weren't wearing masks for the most part while we were there, but suddenly the staff told us we had to put them on around the dolphin. ??? A black waterproof mask. I don't know what they were thinking. Anyway, the dolphin experience was you stand out in the water and the dolphins swim around you and then when you are done you get to hold on to the dolphin and he pulls you for a ride. Just you, the dolphin, and your stupid mask. So I'm getting ready for the dolphin to yoink me up and away and he looks at me, intelligent mammal to intelligent mammal and we bonded in that instance. I very distinctly remember staring into his soulful eyes as he looked at me in my mask, in the middle of a wide bay, alone with him, and he communicated to me this message: YOU STUPID MF'ER! - Fen, you also think the niv (purposely lower case) is a proper Bible version.
It is just one of many New Age Bible versions. If that doesn't ring a bell, put that and, I think the gal's name was Gail Riplinger (it's been around 50 years) in a search engine. Maybe also put "American Presbyterian Church ESV" in a search engine. Scroll to the bottom on that one and read what has been done to certain verses. You'll find the highly touted nasb has done the same to some. Then scroll back up and read about Wescott and Hort. And down to comment 413 no one has touched Matt 23:9 yet. Pardon the delay but one finger typing on this phone... Also, I realize I come across as harsh on matters but know it's intended in love. Some might remember my old I'm gone for now... 407 Don't naval ops generally occur in international waters?
Posted by: Halfhand at March 07, 2026 11:02 AM (I9O2A) Usually, but not always. I recall one patrol we made on The Carver in a place in the middle of Long Island, called Mills Pond. That was a tense one. Posted by: SSBN 656 (G) at March 07, 2026 11:26 AM (e2WND) 443
Speaking as someone who has chronic depression, Stateless, don't downplay it. Yes, other people have problems, but that darkness is a destructive beast.

Fen, you also think the niv (purposely lower case) is a proper Bible version.
It is just one of many New Age Bible versions. I use the Douay-Rheims version; it's a 16th century translation of the Latin Vulgate. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at March 07, 2026 11:29 AM (ufSfZ) 445
