65 I like the way Ket does his still life paintings. The variety of shapes and textures, the arrangement of the pieces at angles, and the shadows that result are very effective and interesting. I'm impressed at well he captures the look of the burnt edges of the Bible, the wrinkled note book, even the worn pan. A lot of thought went into choosing the various parts and arrangements and he had the talent to portray them accurately. There is tension between the mundane items and the partly destroyed Bible, as if searching for higher meaning from incomplete sources. It's not a comfortable scene.

This made me think of when I made still lifes for photography. The mechanics of the camera: film choice and speed, lighting, lens settings, etc., were easier than choosing the items and their arrangement. I wonder how many sketches he made while changing things around until they suited him.

Um...your description of the woman is that of an obvious Democrat partisan.

And acting like Catholics are 100% Republican is insane. It's 50/50.

203 "female voters that might otherwise not vote or vote for republicans"

50%+- Catholic female voters already vote for Dems.

Twas ever thus.

205 If she had a lot of piercings and a tie-dyed dress, she was already voting a straight Democratic ticket.

Well, maybe "straight" isn't the right word.

But she goes to a Catholic church, which means she's a Republican just like Pope Leo.

No SAVE Act, and assuming Cornhole is the nominee, I'm voting for Talarico. Might as well have an out-and-proud Democrat instead of a fake one.

213 The sort of pan painted is ferrous metal coated with porcelain. When the porcelain chips off, usually starting along the rim, it rusts. Even a small chip in the bottom would rust, extending the extent of the defect over time. Yet why discard the item: it has use and touches on family memories. We have an old Copco Dutch oven with a chipped edge and staining on the porcelain with a 49 year memory trove.

219 This reminds me of Becker's Trompe L'Oeil with Violin and Bow, even though the bottle makes this not a trompe l'oiel.

I think it was really just a still life study where the artist is practicing different textures. We underestimate how much of what artists produce is really them just trying to capture a texture on canvas. Especially before modern photography, just having an image of a bottle or bowl was considered worthy.

I have said before that a lot of the paintings of women in ball gowns is mostly the artist showing off how realistic they can paint silk or other materials. Here he does a great job on the bowl but something is off at the interface between surfaces. Not sure, maybe shadows?

I like these paintings because you can feel the artist working all day on a project, and in this one you even feel his living conditions - the paper, religions painting, bottle, bowl -- this is his life, on canvas.
