It's funny because it's 40 years out of date. That's when there was fear of running out of landfill space, but of course landfills can become parkland, and often do. Also, the danger of gas and methane is gone because those are now tapped and use for fuel. At some point, if metals get scarce, we will mine landfills for them.

Wow, that is now 2 days in a row with a Lotus reference for me. Was talking with a coworker about how I use keyboard commands in Excel (such as Ctrl-c / Ctrl-v). Also the Alt-tab command to switch between active applications in Windows. I mentioned that my tendency to use keyboard commands likely goes back to using Lotus 1-2-3 back in the day. Weird to have another Lotus reference the next day.

That's so much energy that some SF writers have suggested throwing it out in a comet-like orbit towards Pluto, then at the apex, adding just enough horizontal velocity to be able to fall straight into the sun. That _might_ work out cheaper, delta-v wise than trying to negate the earth's rotational velocity at 93 million miles out.

Learned to fly as a teen when I worked at the local airport in Vancouver WA. There was a really good restaurant in the Salem.OR airport...about a 30-40 minute flight. I'd take a date down there for dinner (things were cheap back then) and fly back after dark, seeing the lights over Portland.

I remember when professors would not accept dot matrix printer documents. You either had to write them out by hand or type them up.
But in between was the "smart typewriter" which had limited memory so you could see the text and correct it before it was printed. I had something even better, a typewriter with a disc drive that saved the text for review and correction before printing! Eight glorious lines of text visible at a time! I still have it because when the EMPs go off, it will be the top of the line.

I haven't done the math, but consider that the Earth orbits the sun, and thus has a certain momentum which is sufficient to keep it there.
If you were starting at the sun, you'd have to expend a certain amount of energy to get here, plus some to be moving perpendicular to gravity fast enough to stay (there are squares of distance in the divisor of these terms). And then some more if you wanted to escape and you could be clever and slingshot around some of the larger planets. I'm not sure which of those is the bigger factor, but I'm sure someone's done the math on where an orbit would have to be to be 'halfway' out, so then it's just a question of whether we're closer or not.

It kinda does. I have seen many bands do one hell of a job live where they sound like the recording. Some bands make it a point to be that way. Bands I was in were like that. Cover bands try like hell to do that. People have the original recording of the song burned into their head, and its what they want to hear. Most of those stupid shows like the one ABBA is on many times had the band out there flailing away like idiots to a recording. Its an insult to the band. Hey you're gonna be wall paper for the night. Eh, press it in your ass. Metal bands never had to do that, but then again metal bands weren't allowed within 3 parsecs of a show like that. lol

I am now totally obsessed with the possibly fake Marine who "broke his wittle hand" in the meeting and Sen Sheehy, former Navy Seal dealt with him. And one of the crowd calling him a coward...in which time Sheehy should have pounded his mouth shut.
I've watched the video as someone mentioned a "crack" and saw his arm pop a bit. I think the nitwit dislocated his elbow. His hand is not crushed as the Code Pinkos would believe in their shrieking. Like it would come out smashed flat from a steam roller and yukky.
whig posted his little CV of his service and it looks lame.
His dress pants look polyester vs wool and costume like. A chest full of medals for doing not a whole heck of a lot until 2004 in Africa. Probably digging a well for the Peace Corps (he got Peace Corps and Marine Corps confused).
The entire write up is lame. For starters, after this display, I seriously doubt he was on the boxing team "until he broke his hand." Or he seems to have a tough time with his hand.
Then we come to judgement day of him wearing a dress uniform when not on duty for over two decades. As I said below, I think this deserves Leavenworth Psych Ward at the very least.

Earlier this year, from around late January through mid-February we were pretty much snowed in. I think we made one trip out to buy some provisions, but mostly to get booze. The trash didn't get picked up but once in 3 weeks due to icy roads.
Anyway, on the occasion I had to take our trash bin down to the road I was amazed at how heavy it was.
There were a lot, many, obscene amounts of empty liquor bottles and wine bottles in there.
So, yeah.... I'm sorta' proud.

Twice on a flight as I was helping the crew they just paged anyone medical to come to the galley.
Unfortunately for me and the psych patient two social workers (from Oregon) showed up and one was crazier than the psychotic passenger. After the social worker scared her discussing a spider costume for Halloween, the passenger we were trying to calm down attempted to open the door to the galley. I figured at over 30K feet it would not open due to pressure (the social workers squeed). EMT's met that flight and hauled her off.
The lead flight attendant put me in charge & offered me food but I was fine with gin and tonics. I kept the plane from landing in Atlanta.
I got Delta Sky Miles for my heroics. After a half hour my husband came back to see what was going on.I only got to sit by him on landing.
The other patient was depressed,sobbing and vomiting and I was very compassionate with her.
In hospital:
Code Blue: cardiac arrest
Code Red: fire
Code Pink: abduction
Code Black: bomb threat

Germany used to do that. (Facility was right out the back gate of Wuerzburg army base, at the bottom of the hill. There were days....) But when everyone got all freaked out about carbon, they shut it down.

Prayers for an uneventful delivery.
September 2005, I took the wife with me on a business trip. Employer put us up in the Four Seasons, Newport Beach. Manager took one look at her and told me he was upgrading us to a mini suite. Her water broke at 5AM on the second morning.
We lit out of there and hit the 405 in about thirty minutes (thank God for HOV lanes). Made it to the hospital in about three hours. Little thug didn't come out until 7:30 that evening. This Saturday, he's driving with a friend to Miami for spring break...

Unfortunately for him taking pics of children, even clothed children, that would make a reasonable adult uncomfortable IS illegal if it's with sexual intent. (he admitted on the stand that it was)
It took all of five minutes to find him guilty.

When we lived in FL on a busy,crowded holiday weekend at the beach (we went every weekend and lived 1/4mi from the Atlantic)...I saw similar.
A man had one of those large video cameras pointing at my sons as he held it. Sons were on boogie boards. 5yrs and 3yrs.
I did not say a word to my husband but got up and walked towards about 10' him and he ran. Now I wish I had alerted the entire beach and lifeguard, but my instinct said pervert and alarms went off. I'm still mad about it, that I did not do enough.

You haven't lived until a tall glass of coke tips over, hits a bong, and both poured into the keyboard. With nothing to lose I carried it carefully to the sink, dumped it out, ran it under the hot water rinsing it out, took it out to the garage and blew it out with compressed air. let it dry overnight. Damn thing worked fine.

Praying all goes well for the new Moronette.
Didn't know our firstborn was female until she was born. Even with the ultrasound, we didn't know our twins were boys until they were born. (The ultrasound just showed they were two distinct entities, not a giant kid. The tech was more primitive back then.)
I don't think it's fair that nowadays parents get to know which color to paint the nursery before the baby's born.

For garbage: separate it at the point it becomes garbage. Three bins, three streams. Stream 1 is anything that can be burned; food scraps, paper and plastic bags, plastic bottles, foil pouches. That goes to the waste-burning power plant. Stream 2 is stuff that is mostly metal, and maybe some durable plastics. It goes to a metal-recovery plant where metals are sorted for recycling. There is a huge amount of embodied energy in metal, so it is worth doing. Stream 3 is glass, Pop and liquor and beer bottles, spaghetti sauce jars, pickle jars. Quick rinse to get most of the goop out, no need to be hospital-clean. Glass gets crushed, and used as a component of road pavement.

Exactly. The Earth is cruising along at about 30 km/second (yeah, per second)...about 67,000 mph.
All of that velocity would have to be killed in order for something to fall into the sun, and killing it would require exactly as much energy as accelerating it to that speed would take.
Now, I'm sure you could play some games with slingshot orbits and other celestial bodies, but when it comes down to it you'd be better off just burning the garbage here.
Besides, if it's nuclear "waste", there's a good chance we'll want it for fuel or some other purpose in the future. Kinda hard to get it back if it's vapor in the sun's photosphere.

Oh, I KNOW he poo-poohed it. I was a RN Case Manager of a med center ED in FL.
I assume he was wandering around or doing something wacko, the cops were called and he got an escort to the ED. The ED found out he had family and here we are.
Give this ED a call. There will be a case manager in this hospital somewhere if the ED does not have their own like ours did (a large med center in FL).
The case manager or social worker will have a list of places for homeless. She will (I hope) give you this list to pick from and when a bed opens up he can go there. His name will be put on a waiting list.
OR you can deliver him back to the ED, explain your cirucumstances of having a husband to tend to, he is your BIL and you cannot care for him.
I assume he is simply demented and not dangerous/insane or given to anger...if so, this is another factor that you do not need to deal with at all.
He can't be that demented if he road a bus for 48hrs and was able to find you 15mi away.

Yes...mention that "it was not a safe discharge as no one called you prior to dumping him at your door." Use the word "dump" specifically.
It's not a safe discharge (this is required by all Joint Commission hospitals for funding) because you are unable to take care of him and have no funds. Make up something if you have to.
IF he has health issues as well as obvious mental issues, this is key, too. They can put him in a 48hr psych hold for evaluation.
If he's acting wacko document it. Actually document the entire dump of him on your doorstep by cops with date/time.
The cops are innocent as the discharge was ordered by SOMEONE in that ED. A doc's signature or name is on the paperwork with a discharge diagnosis. Plus a number to call after discharge.
Dumping of patients under EMTALA can cost them Medicare and Medicaid and all sorts of stuff. As can unsafe discharge
