Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - March 4, 2026 [Doof]![]() Speaking of T Rex Seems as though my friend Dino hasn't been fully forthcoming with his fleetness of foot. Scientists Just Discovered That T-Rex Actually Pranced on Its Tiptoes. But This Made Them Even Deadlier Than We Thought Pop culture has conditioned us to imagine a terrifying encounter with Tyrannosaurus rex first starts with the rhythmic, earth-shattering boom of heavy, flat-footed stomps. But if you were actually standing in a Cretaceous forest, you might not feel those tremors at all. Evolutionary biologists and biomechanics experts are giving the apex predator a serious makeover. It turns out the T. rex was remarkably dainty on its feet. Instead of slamming its heels into the dirt, the ten-ton carnivore may have walked and sprinted on its tiptoes. *** Fossilized footprints actually corroborate the math. When the researchers examined tracks left by tyrannosaurs, including a massive three-foot-long track from New Mexico, they found the deepest impressions were located under the toes. This suggests the dinosaur pressed its weight into the front of its foot. Walking on tiptoes allowed the T. rex to maintain a crouched posture, taking numerous fast steps to stay stable. This distal-first strike turned the animal’s legs into massive shock absorbers, managing the immense stress of its body weight over uneven terrain.Check out the whole thing. Long and informative article. *** Not related, yet somehow related. This is now my default thought of how our own T Rex actually ambles around. Maybe think about a solution down here on Earth first. If you’ve spent any time on the Earth in the last 50 years or so, you might have noticed a lot of trash laying around…with less and less space to, you know, put it. Meanwhile, we’re sending all sorts of satellites and rockets beyond our atmosphere every day. That’s why you asked us: Why can’t we launch our junk into space, too? Or better yet: STRAIGHT INTO THE SUN! For the moment, let’s set aside the big problems with creating too much trash in the first place, and focus on the blocker: We simply can’t afford to shoot our junk into that flamin’ hot Cheeto in the sky. Plus, shouldn’t we worry about finding a solution down here on our planet? Yes. On our latest video episode of Ask Us Anything, we explain why we can’t launch our garbage into the sun or onto the moon. Southwest Airlines’ decision to abandon its iconic open-seating system has sparked a wave of customer backlash, prompting the carrier to reassess parts of its newly introduced assigned-seating policy in early 2026. The Dallas-based airline’s move, which was rolled out on January 27, 2026, was intended to modernize the booking and boarding experience, but loyal flyers have loudly objected to unintended consequences that have emerged in the first weeks of operation. As complaints mounted across social media and travel forums, Southwest responded with refinements aimed at addressing pain points and restoring trust among its most frequent passengers, as reported by the Dallas News. At the heart of the controversy is bin space and boarding flow. Southwest’s overhead bin issues arise from a mismatch between its newly assigned seating system and the aircraft’s original design, which was built for a different approach. Under open seating, passengers could pick a row with available bin space, which would naturally spread carry-ons across the cabin. Assigned seating removes that choice. Now, some passengers with seats toward the rear often board earlier and sometimes stow bags in forward bins to avoid carrying them down the aisle.Check out the whole thing to read about what the airline plans to do. Spoiler: they are not returning to the old A/B/C boarding groups. ----- Flight Attendants and Pilots Use These 4 Phrases on Board to Signal Emergencies—Here's What to Listen For “Terms like ‘Code 300’ or ‘Angel’ are typically used by commercial airlines to discreetly signal a medical emergency onboard, often when a passenger is incapacitated, unresponsive, or in serious distress,” Jason Martinelli, the director of operations at Cirrus Aviation Services, told Travel + Leisure. However, he noted airlines “often have their own internal codes and operating procedure” for these types of scenarios. *** Other code words could include "code yellow," which usually indicates a minor medical incident, "pan-pan," which indicates a serious, but non life-threatening emergency, and "mermaid," meant for passengers who purposely sprawl out across empty seats in order to get the row to themselves, according to luxury vacation rental company Wander.I'm often fascinated by insider jargon like this. Just this week, while on a demolition type job site, I heard some of the crew start saying "eighty eight" to each other when a particular gentleman showed up. That is their code for when someone from the safety department shows up. Hmm -- Now I need to pay attention to what they say when I show up. Any of you have examples of stuff like this? Code words or signals you use to alert others of a particular person or thing?

It's part of the overall alienation of society, where humans are reduced to mere images. Actual physical intimacy is too stressful, so better to just do snapchat and achieve some sort of connection that way.

Energy-wise, dumping things into the sun is really hard - you have to negate all of earth's rotational velocity around the sun. Imagine being in a 65mph pickup, and trying to throw something out the bed so that it lands with zero velocity.
That's so much energy that some SF writers have suggested throwing it out in a comet-like orbit towards Pluto, then at the apex, adding just enough horizontal velocity to be able to fall straight into the sun. That _might_ work out cheaper, delta-v wise than trying to negate the earth's rotational velocity at 93 million miles out. Posted by: Nathan at March 04, 2026 10:27 PM (joVRR) 106

It's not that we CAN'T send our garbage into the sun, it's more "Wow, that would cost a lot." Oddly, sending things sunward so they actually crash into the sun is not as easy as you think. And takes more energy (supposedly) than going outward.
- I haven't done the math, but consider that the Earth orbits the sun, and thus has a certain momentum which is sufficient to keep it there. If you were starting at the sun, you'd have to expend a certain amount of energy to get here, plus some to be moving perpendicular to gravity fast enough to stay (there are squares of distance in the divisor of these terms). And then some more if you wanted to escape and you could be clever and slingshot around some of the larger planets. I'm not sure which of those is the bigger factor, but I'm sure someone's done the math on where an orbit would have to be to be 'halfway' out, so then it's just a question of whether we're closer or not. And one of the crowd calling him a coward...in which time Sheehy should have pounded his mouth shut. I've watched the video as someone mentioned a "crack" and saw his arm pop a bit. I think the nitwit dislocated his elbow. His hand is not crushed as the Code Pinkos would believe in their shrieking. Like it would come out smashed flat from a steam roller and yukky. whig posted his little CV of his service and it looks lame. His dress pants look polyester vs wool and costume like. A chest full of medals for doing not a whole heck of a lot until 2004 in Africa. Probably digging a well for the Peace Corps (he got Peace Corps and Marine Corps confused). The entire write up is lame. For starters, after this display, I seriously doubt he was on the boxing team "until he broke his hand." Or he seems to have a tough time with his hand. Then we come to judgement day of him wearing a dress uniform when not on duty for over two decades. As I said below, I think this deserves Leavenworth Psych Ward at the very least. @ChinaUncensored This isn't just about Iran. Every country watching this is doing the math. Every country that has been quietly drifting toward Beijing's orbit, betting that China is the future, is watching Beijing issue press conferences while its strategic partner gets regime-changed. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at March 04, 2026 10:45 PM (+HNx/) ......................... Twice on a flight as I was helping the crew they just paged anyone medical to come to the galley. Unfortunately for me and the psych patient two social workers (from Oregon) showed up and one was crazier than the psychotic passenger. After the social worker scared her discussing a spider costume for Halloween, the passenger we were trying to calm down attempted to open the door to the galley. I figured at over 30K feet it would not open due to pressure (the social workers squeed). EMT's met that flight and hauled her off. The lead flight attendant put me in charge & offered me food but I was fine with gin and tonics. I kept the plane from landing in Atlanta. I got Delta Sky Miles for my heroics. After a half hour my husband came back to see what was going on.I only got to sit by him on landing. The other patient was depressed, sobbing and vomiting and I was very compassionate with her. We jurors had to watch the whole 20 minute video. It was extremely uncomfortable even though there was no nudity. Fortunately for us jurors taking or viewing pics of kids at the beach isn't illegal. When viewing evidence during a trial where illegal material, underage pics, vids, etc., is viewed by the jurors and court, what protects the viewers from charges stemming from that viewing?
I'm sure there is some rule of jury immunity for handling evidence, but even if there wasn't, how would you get a conviction? Prosecutor: "Jury Number 2, we will prove that all 12 members of Jury Number 1 watched illegal material. One of the elements of that charge is that the material was illegal. You will have to view the same material to determine if it was illegal" Posted by: Chuck C at March 05, 2026 12:00 AM (D0HYP) 322

Speaking of consular affairs and diplomats, persona non grata, etc. I downloaded George Kennan’s autobiography. He was a pretty famous US diplomat in the 1930s thru the 1950s, was stationed in Berlin and Moscow and understood Europe and the Cold War. It’s a pretty good read, he was a really good writer.
I’m getting the distinct impression our later diplomats may not always have been quite the caliber of George Kennan. And the Secretary of State position can be a real crapshoot. Posted by: Common Tater at March 05, 2026 12:05 AM (8OQ0R) 328

As far as trials involving illegal material (aka CP or CSAM), the crime usually consists of knowingly accessing or duplicating it. You can't be liable just because someone shows it to you of their own accord. Think of it this way - if someone ran up to you and grabbed your crotch, did you sexually assault them? After all, your genitalia made contact with them. No, of course you're not liable.

China Uncensored @ChinaUncensored This isn't just about Iran. Every country watching this is doing the math. Every country that has been quietly drifting toward Beijing's orbit, betting that China is the future, is watching Beijing issue press conferences while its strategic partner gets regime-changed. The multipolar world was never a reality. It was a theory, a brand, an aspiration shared by countries that had grievances against American power. But they had no actual capacity to replace it. And when the moment of truth arrived, all Russia and China could do is say, “sorry for your loss.” 11:36 AM · Mar 4, 2026 · 69.9K Views Posted by: Aetius451AD at March 05, 2026 12:17 AM (bss/y) 350

There was a scandal in Astoria, Oregon, which is on the coast down the Columbia River from Portland, where -- I think it was a middle school -- minors were texting each other explicit photos and forwarding the ones they received to their friends and so on. The police had to go and tell the kids to stop and explain to them that technically they were committing a very serious crime in producing and distributing child porn, and they also had to go and explain to the community that they were not going hard after this particular serious criminal racket because common sense. It was a mess.

Stream 2 is stuff that is mostly metal, and maybe some durable plastics. It goes to a metal-recovery plant where metals are sorted for recycling. There is a huge amount of embodied energy in metal, so it is worth doing. Stream 3 is glass, Pop and liquor and beer bottles, spaghetti sauce jars, pickle jars. Quick rinse to get most of the goop out, no need to be hospital-clean. Glass gets crushed, and used as a component of road pavement. My grandmother's sister had 9 kids, none under 10lbs, the biggest being 16 pounds. The joke is he was born walking. He was 6'5" grown up. There were some other jokes, no doubt involving hot dogs and hallways, but since I don't understand italian I couldn't eavesdrop when my aunts would talk about her. > Energy-wise, dumping things into the sun is really hard - you have to negate all of earth's rotational velocity around the sun.
Exactly. The Earth is cruising along at about 30 km/second (yeah, per second)...about 67,000 mph. All of that velocity would have to be killed in order for something to fall into the sun, and killing it would require exactly as much energy as accelerating it to that speed would take. Now, I'm sure you could play some games with slingshot orbits and other celestial bodies, but when it comes down to it you'd be better off just burning the garbage here. Besides, if it's nuclear "waste", there's a good chance we'll want it for fuel or some other purpose in the future. Kinda hard to get it back if it's vapor in the sun's photosphere. Posted by: QJ the tarbender at March 05, 2026 12:22 AM (rdVOm) .. Oh, I KNOW he poo-poohed it. I was a RN Case Manager of a med center ED in FL. I assume he was wandering around or doing something wacko, the cops were called and he got an escort to the ED. The ED found out he had family and here we are. Give this ED a call. There will be a case manager in this hospital somewhere if the ED does not have their own like ours did (a large med center in FL). The case manager or social worker will have a list of places for homeless. She will (I hope) give you this list to pick from and when a bed opens up he can go there. His name will be put on a waiting list. OR you can deliver him back to the ED, explain your cirucumstances of having a husband to tend to, he is your BIL and you cannot care for him. I assume he is simply demented and not dangerous/insane or given to anger...if so, this is another factor that you do not need to deal with at all. He can't be that demented if he road a bus for 48hrs and was able to find you 15mi away. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at March 05, 2026 12:42 AM (WONhk) 401

Posted by: hesitant Miklos ----------- That's in my "tool kit" if all else fails! Posted by: QJ the tarbender at March 05, 2026 12:52 AM (rdVOm) Yes...mention that "it was not a safe discharge as no one called you prior to dumping him at your door." Use the word "dump" specifically. It's not a safe discharge (this is required by all Joint Commission hospitals for funding) because you are unable to take care of him and have no funds. Make up something if you have to. IF he has health issues as well as obvious mental issues, this is key, too. They can put him in a 48hr psych hold for evaluation. If he's acting wacko document it. Actually document the entire dump of him on your doorstep by cops with date/time. The cops are innocent as the discharge was ordered by SOMEONE in that ED. A doc's signature or name is on the paperwork with a discharge diagnosis. Plus a number to call after discharge. Dumping of patients under EMTALA can cost them Medicare and Medicaid and all sorts of stuff. As can unsafe discharge Call that number tomorrow and get this show on the road. I am so sorry, by the way. Seriously. I repeat my drumming: you do not need this. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at March 05, 2026 01:06 AM (WONhk) 429
